  • There's a Girl Genius Kickstarter for the latest volume. They have a backer tier that gives you a physical copy of every book in the series (20 in all). Kind of expensive but it's 20 books.

Except they warn that shipping to Australia is likely to cost more than the books themselves. Yay. PDFs it is.

  • YikYak is exposing the live GPS co-ordinates of all its users. (The Response Times)

    What could possibly go wrong?

  • It may be impossible to de-extinct a species, but let's do it anyway. (Quanta)

Only one species has been de-extincted so far, and it wasn't a huge success - the cloned ibex died shortly after being born.

But if you get a big hairy cold-adapted elephant that has mostly mammoth genes, how much are you going to quibble? Also it could solve global warming.

  • This early iPodPhone design is actually pretty cool. (9to5Mac)

There's a reason Apple went for the all-screen design, but I do like this concept. The lower half pivots so you can use the click wheel or a keypad.

  • The Asus ZenBook Pro 16X OLED is kind of neat. (Liliputing)

Core i9 12900H (6+8 cores), RTX 3060 graphics, 4K 16" OLED display, 32GB of (soldered) LPDDR5 RAM - I'd prefer SODIMMs but at least it's 32GB and not just 16 - and up to 2TB of SSD. And the Four Essential Keys and a little dial thingy next to the keypad.

  • The Asus ZenBook Pro 14 Duo is also kind of neat. (Liliputing)

It has a 14" main screen - 2880x1800 pixel OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate - and also a second, touch-sensitive screen above the keyboard that is 2880x864. Also supports the i9-12900H and an RTX 3050 Ti. Again up to 32GB RAM and 2TB of SSD. It doesn't have the Four Essential Keys but that's not because they forgot; there is literally nowhere to put them.

  • The Asus Zenbook S 13 isn't too bad either of you don't need a powerhouse system. (Liliputing)

It has the brand new Ryzen 6800U, 16GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD, and a 13" 2880x1800 OLED display, and weighs just 1kg.

None of them are particularly cheap though.

  • Susan is the new Karen.

Specifically, YouTube has been banning vtubers again - small indies who have nobody to back them up, and big names like Kobo Kanaeru of Hololive and Mika Melatika of Nijisanji.

It's one thing to have to deal with a giant uncaring corporation that only wants your money because at least if you put enough money on the table you might get their attention. It's another thing entirely to deal with a giant caring corporation that wants to do what is good for you, regardless of whether it makes them money or not - and of course regardless also of whether that is what you want.

Give me a good old-fashioned robber baron any day.

17 I wonder how the electric tank is coming along in the military. Battle fields of the future will need charging stations. Local police dept is being criticized for not buying new electric police cars. Police Dept says they have no equipment for using them, and no car manufacturer offers cars suitable for police work. Since most cars are in use almost 24/7. Environment crazy's don't care about that, just buy the damn cars, or they will be very upset.

21 @17 - Big cities in the South like Houston are nowhere close to having adequate infrastructure to support millions of EVs for either personal use or first responders. It would literally take a multi-billion dollar investment and ten years to change the landscape.

Unfortunately you can't just buy a cut rate charger, plug it in, and stick it on a wall somewhere. Even "slow" chargers (and no way on that crap, I'm not waiting for hours for a charge) require heavy duty wiring busses and so on that often requires tearing out where you're making the installation and redoing everything just to get a single charger put in.

No thanks for now.

An interesting question about electric vehicles is infrastructure related; we know they're heavier, about 1,000 pounds more on average than an equivalent internal combustion engine. So you have a bridge rated for X number of cars weighing X number of pounds. What happens when it has to handle 20% more weight?

62 “When an NIH employee makes a discovery in their official capacity, the NIH owns the rights to any resulting patent. These patents are then licensed for commercial use to companies that could use them to bring products to market,” the fact sheet reads.

“Employees are listed as inventors on the patents and receive a share of the royalties obtained through any licensing, or ‘technology transfer,’ of their inventions. Essentially, taxpayer money funding NIH research benefits researchers employed by NIH because they are listed as patent inventors and therefore receive royalty payments from licensees.”

70 “We believe there is an unholy conflict of interest inherent at NIH,” he said. “Consider the fact that each year, NIH doles out $32 billion in grants to approximately 56,000 grantees. Now we know that over an 11-year period, there is going to be approximately $350 million flowing the other way from third-party payers, many of which receive NIH grants, and those payments are flowing back to NIH scientists and leadership.”

Fauci and Lane told AP that they agreed there was an appearance of a conflict of interest in getting the royalties, with Fauci saying that he contributed his royalties to charity. Lane didn’t do that, according to Andrzejewski.

I love to waste Bobs' (pl) time so I keep them on the line and keep asking them questions. My favorite is Medicare Insurance - supposedly Medicare is sending out new cards, plastic and with microchip. I fish for where they are calling from, usually FL or DC. Then I confuse them with area codes (they don't understand that)/ I ask why their area code is NOT FL or DC. Eventually we get to the meat of the matter - my Medicare I.D. I ask them for the last two 'digits' and they give me a song and dance why they can't give out personal info (they've just finished telling me my name, address, zip code, etc.). It's fun I tell you. I've been threatened with having my Medicare canceled.

89 >Give me a good old-fashioned robber baron any day.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ~ C.S. Lewis

90 Pixy - There's a youtube video of flying fish on the main page, on the monday night thread. It's glitching out on all of my desktop browsers, repeatedly jumping the page to that video. Makes the site unreadable as it jumps there every 20 seconds or so. This happens with every youtube video. It tries to change the playback speed to 2x when it jumps.
