In A Hole? Keep Digging! (“How Can I Get My Boyfriend to Stop Digging His Tunnel?” )

A woman posted on Reddit that her boyfriend spends all his spare time digging a tunnel on his property, and that if separated too long from his digging, he gets anxious to get back to his tunnel.

So, I know this is a weird question, but my boyfriend likes to spend a lot of his free time digging a tunnel on some property that he inherited. I haven't seen the full extent of it, but last I saw it was remarkably deep under the surface.

At the front, which is the only part that I've seen, he's got cement beams, electric lights, even chairs and a small table.

Aside from safety concerns, there's also the fact that he doesn't really have a social life, because of this thing. I'm pretty much the only person he still talks to outside of his job, and he doesn't go out and do anything anymore. It used to be that he'd occasionally head out and do some digging on the weekends, but now he spends almost all of his free time out there.

He's always really happy when he comes back from digging, which is why I haven't seriously tried to stop him before, but I was talking to a friend about him, and she told me he might be going crazy.

The Reddit post was put on Twitter and went viral, with some hilarious responses.

I get it. When I was a little kid, my buddies and I felt a need to dam up the nearby seasonal creek whenever it was flowing. Five decades later when I walk through the woods near my house, I still get the itch to dam up the brooks and springs to create little ponds. Maybe it’ll be one of my retirement hobbies when that day comes.

What crazy amateur engineering projects are any of y’all doing? Any recreational tunnelers or dam builders among the horde?

1 It's not just boys. I used to do serious hydrologic engineering as a sprout, and in the Pacific Northwest there are many, MANY opportunities to dig ditches/create dams/redirect water or as my mom put it, "create all the mud". You should try it, it's fun!

2 So, how big a tunnel?

I'll admit to being the meme- underground stuff always fascinates me.

That one where a guy had like a 1000 sq foot home and then created a 5000 sq foot bunker with concrete under the house is like candy to me.

6 Way back when, I dammed up a creek up in the hills of CA. I did a good enough job to be able to swim in the pool that built up behind the dam.

The next year, when we went back, no dam. It appeared someone, the nerve! had busted it up.

Years later, it dawned on me I'd probably dammed a much needed water source for a rancher further downstream, hence the destruction.

Eh, the water still goes downstream once it fills the pool. Probably just natural erosion

21 I had a pond built by my house ... that was neat. And now I'm putting in drain tiles with terraces ... so the water gets dammed up ... keeps topsoil from going down the Mississippi and causing red tides in the gulf.

We were in them for about .15 each counting truck rental, and my garage became the storage depot which really pissed off the wife. We had the what the hell are we going to do with them moment, and decided, what the hell, lets see if they will sell for $2 each. Gone in two days. I kept some for basement shelving and stuff.

The chapel at my college was on a hill. Someone in my frat had the idea to build a luge course on the slope behind the chapel which had some natural twists and turns through the woods.

We spent weeks crafting a beautiful course complete with banked turns. We dragged garbage cans full of water to turn the whole thing into a solid block of ice and it was truly a thing of beauty and fast as hell.

Everyday we would steal trays from the cafeteria to use as sleds and we used ski wax to make the slippery as could be. It was one of the highlights of our academic career.

A little ventilation, a little electric and water and besides a family storm shelter he had poker game and beer drinking central.

LOL-real Hollywood view of history. The British reclining on the fainting couches while the plucky Merkins win the war in 1940. Look at how many missions British airmen had to go on in bomber command and compare to the paltry number that Merkins suffered. Majority of Panzer and Panzer grenadier divisions were deployed against the British and Canadians in 1944 and 1945.
Germans did not fear any of the allied forces and despite having barely an airforce suffered a 1:1 casualty rate on their western front.

We used to take used CO2 cartridges, put in some gun powder and use them like grenades, you could hear the shrapnel flying by. Also, when I was an older dummy one guy got ahold of dry ice somewhere and we would stuff a bunch in 2liter bottles, fill it with warm water, cap and run, BOOM!. No one was ever hurt. Only problem was, I would come across small black deposits. I just dug them out and threw them on the ground.

Not until I saw one of the cats poop in the trough, years later, did I realize what those black clumps were ...

Snow began to fall on Jan. 30, and over the next two days 16.4 inches dropped. 238 LOL-real Hollywood view of history.

Indeed. I remember reading about Alexander the Great's Empire after his death. He had impregnated the Princess Roxanna when he died and the whole Macedonian leadership waited to see if the baby would be a boy or a girl to determine who would rule.

When a boy was born he nominally became King, though with a regent of course. He never did fully come into his own though as he was assassinated before he could.

265 Had they been like the Germany of WWI I suspect they would have won or at least forced a stalemate that left them most of Europe. Just having a million Ukrainian soldiers (and the Ukrainians were begging to fight for them) would have made a big difference in 42/43...

273 I tend to believe the Germans lost WWII preciously because of the Holocaust and what they did in Eastern Europe.

Had they been like the Germany of WWI I suspect they would have won or at least forced a stalemate that left them most of Europe. Just having a million Ukrainian soldiers (and the Ukrainians were begging to fight for them) would have made a big difference in 42/43...

Perhaps, but it was Hitler who forced the Army to use the risky Sickle-Cut that wiped out the cream of the French army rather than a standard frontal attack like in WWI. It was also him that did the risky invasion of Norway that protected the Swedish ore imports for the war. Hitler at least had some sense of logistics, the Army tended to have none at all.

The Germany of WWI wasn't that much better -- they forgot that all their Nitre to make ammo came from Chile. Lucky for them their chemists found a way just in time to do it in a lab or they'd have run out.

274 Didn't Roe herself recant and say she disowned the entire thing? For sure no conservative mentions that because why help? Sure it is anecdotal and should not matter. But this country lives and breaths on the anecdotal. There is a reason why the Amber Heard thing is the biggest news in the country.

Never ask permission, play dumb ask 'forgiveness' only if caught.

What if you stand out in the rain with your mouth open?

During a heavy rainstorm a few years ago, a thick branch fell off the tall oak in the backyard -- onto the power lines. Wife sent me out to knock it loose.

I got the rake, went out under the target area, looked up -- and got smacked in the face by a torrent of rain. Didn't think about that until then.

(I did get the branch off the wire.)

398 ShainS, haven't seen that movie, maybe should. On the way back from the errand downtown we stopped in Costa Mesa, actually, for 1) booze run and 2) ramen.

Hi Times Wine and Liquor, you probably know it? Great selection of stuff not easily found elsewhere, in this case some aged rum and calvados. And their prices actually beat Total Wine's, which is impressive.

Costa Mesa's become sort of the center of ramen in SoCal (which would mean the US). Makes some sense, given the Japanese corporate presence first in Torrance, then Irvine. Several branches of Japanese shops, and in this last case a new-ish one opened by an acolyte of a Fukuoka (Hakata) mentor. Very good (Kashiwa Ramen, Baker Street).

404 Friends and I dug out a room where 3 of us could fit inside and the top was ground level and was totally camouflaged perfectly to the point you could easily fall into it not knowing it was there. This was in some woods near a friends house. We rigged a pipe sticking up 1" above the ground at an angle and launched bottle rockets over a semi-busy road close by.

The friend in charge of this project went on to become an army ranger and his father was a army colonel. It eventually flooded of course but that summer had a really long drought I remember and we were good to go for a long time.
