Post-butt photo showed that the bull basically detached the guy's face from the front of his skull without killing him. .... yea, about that. Typically the landing gear is designed to pivot so the plane doesn't ramp off the runway... which would be bad. B-52's have been videoed doing this at angles near 45-60 degrees off center. Very cool... but tough to learn.

In any event when I lived outside Monterey, CA and I'd fly into that airport this "crabbing" as it's called was typical. I remember looking out my window and seeing the end of the runway... which should have been "up front."

51 I think the video of the plane exaggerated the crab angle a bit but it was probably a good 30deg after the mains touch. There was significant speed brake asymmetry and rudder kicking it over at touch down. Roll also works a bit on the ground because it makes one side brake more effectively than the other.

You have to design for a significant amount of crab angle. That is done generally based on taking your prediction of a max normal landing for a 10fps R/S and then applying lateral forces to the gear as a conservative factor of the vertical load from a normal landing. All of this is laid out in the regs pretty well.

The technique in small planes is to crab to the point where you are about to flare, then put it into a slip, and bank to the windward side to keep from being pushed across the runway.
In bigger planes, like this one, you don't bank because the engines are hanging low and you can drag them. But, the wind doesn't really push them much either, because they're really heavy. So, line up a little upwind, and expect to slide a little as you land.
Unless you are doing a 40 knot crosswind, like this guy. Then you ride the crab all the way to the ground, and drag the mains around after they touch.
Then you announce "Welcome to Cheyenne".

I hate having stuff on my desktop. All sorts of software have a default I can't even deselect that will put shortcuts on my desktop that I then have to delete. What's worse is windows has this whole menagerie of accounts, user, everyone, blah blah, that share desktops that are then merged into one on your account. Well on a work computer those other accounts are out of your security permissions so you can't change them.

And when the mothership pushes updates to my computer it puts the shortcuts into those other account's desktop. It's like someone walking by every day to throw around and make a mess on my real desk at work. It's a mess I don't even fool with it anymore. It's a useless computer appendix thanks to how MS screwed it up.

.... yea, about that. Typically the landing gear is designed to pivot so the plane doesn't ramp off the runway... which would be bad. B-52's have been videoed doing this at angles near 45-60 degrees off center. Very cool... but tough to learn.

In any event when I lived outside Monterey, CA and I'd fly into that airport this "crabbing" as it's called was typical. I remember looking out my window and seeing the end of the runway... which should have been "up front."

The B-52's landing gear trucks can be pivoted +/- 20 degrees from the centerline to help the plane crab into the wind for take-off and landing. SAC wanted maximum fuel and bomb load takeoffs without a wind straight down the runway.

That's the funny thing - I don't use many desktop icons. Mostly I go into the menu and select what I want from there. All of my document folders are not on the desktop, they are in doccuments, and then into the folder for the type and down through subfolders to the specific one. To me having all of those folders on the desktop leaves me wondering "how do you find anything in this mess?"

Of course, I like to put my tools away even when I am using them and clean up the work area while a project is underway just so I can find things because I know where they are.

bonhomme, I'm with you. When I was in college, I dug Papa's drinking chops, savoring life and much of his lifestyle- travel, art, food, women. I was mesmerized by Hemingway and read everything I could. Even tried taking up gin. I thought, this guy gets it and me. And as I got older and "wiser" and actually did some of the things Hemingway wrote about, I realized he was tormented by mental illness and a bloated ego. A pseudo phony. Would I meet him today, I'd probably tell him he was a douche rocket. But the dude could box, so I might take a hit or two for it

Pug- get her some down jackets and fleece pants. Or just go in the summer. I absolutely recommend everyone 'Ron go. People are sort of friendly, but they leave you alone in typical Scandinavian fashion. The mountains, glaciers, beaches and volcanos are what you want to see. Will be a highlight of my life I contemplate on my deathbed.
Check out my author page on Amazon- I put up two basic photos of an alien looking mountain range (it looks like a man made pyramid) and a river of glacier chunks. Just wild.

263 On a mileage run back from London to S.F. once, had to detour to Iceland for a medical emergency. It was Winter. The ocean and the landscape were incredibly beautiful. Whitecaps everywhere and then a short snow squall hit. Lots of fog. Fantastic.
