Daily Tech News 4 May 2022

Top Story

  • Chinese state hackers are targeting the Russian government. (Bleeping Computer)

Yes, and everyone else on the planet as well, but it's worth noting that China and Russia are not allies. At best they momentarily share some of the same enemies.

China has also been caught hacking Ukraine. Not sure if Russia has been caught recently hacking China, but I have no doubt they are doing so.

Tech News

  • AMD has confirmed the rumoured Dragon Range laptop CPU due next year. (Tom's Hardware)

This will be a Zen 4 chip for high-end gaming laptops - probably with 16 cores.

Intel already has 16 core parts but those are 8 performance cores plus 8 much slower efficiency cores. The AMD design will have 16 performance cores.

  • Speaking of high-end gaming laptops the Gigabyte Aero 16 is one. (Tom's Hardware)

Well, sort of. It has a Core i7 12700H and an Nvidia 3070 Ti (Max-Q) which are good but not top-of-the-line parts, but it also has a 3840x2400 OLED display, dual RAM slots, dual M.2 slots, dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, and the Four Essential Keys.

It's about 20% faster single-threaded than my Dell Inspiron 16 Plus, but unfortunately costs twice as much in Australia. I'm in no hurry to upgrade.

(The Inspiron 16 Plus doesn't have dedicated keys for the FEK, but it has a numeric keypad which does double duty.)

  • The 3080 Ti is selling at MSRP. (Tom's Hardware)

    A mere $1200.

For a card that will be obsolete in a few months.

  • Axios is garbage. (Axios)

In their why free speech is bad article, they note that without some moderation, social networks die. But they also make it very clear that they are arguing in bad faith:
Why it matters: Even much smaller social networks that aimed to minimize content moderation have found that an "anything goes if it's legal" policy quickly devolves into a miasma of violence, spam, fraud and bullying.
Speech is violence and violence is speech.

  • Overshooting the target: NASA requires the Artemis Moon lander to be able to deliver a payload of 865kg to the lunar surface; SpaceX's Starship can deliver 100 tons. (Ars Technica)

That completely changes what is possible for future Moon missions. Just shove everything and the kitchen sink onto the rocket; it doesn't matter if it turns out you don't need it.

Disclaimer: Just remember not to pack the car keys. Yes, I did that once.

8 Axios is garbage. (Axios)

Well duh. I have loudly and frequently mentioning that Axios was formed specifically to damage Trump.

Their incep date? January, 2017. That right there is a major fucking clue. It's an easy search to find that what I say is true.

I'd rather believe something in the NY Slimes, and I believe nothing written there.

Then again, sometimes I think my mom is trying to snowball me. Call me suspicious, but never too late for dinner.

9 m think maybe you suggested a router repeater? Anyway thinking of getting one to try and get wifi in yard better

Posted by: Skip at May 04, 2022 04:18 AM (2JoB8)

10 And the morning and the evening were Wednesday!

Pixy, I've got a minor tech question. My boss gave me his old Lenovo laptop, which is running Win 10. For some reason 9 of the .MP4 video files I have on a flash drive were not showing up in File Explorer last night -- just 9 files, downloaded yesterday morning at work on a Win 10 desktop. I refreshed, and clicked to show "hidden files." Nothing worked. However, this morning 4 of the 9 *are* showing. Is there a setting I'm missing, or do I need to download an update to Win 10 to fix Explorer?

12 Not to bad, $50 about, plug in and it connects. I get internet in my outbuilding attic so wonder if it was there it should cover yard. Far end of house can get touchy as well so would help there.

in my experience, the best fix for Win10 is Linux Mint.
just download the .iso file, use appropriate tools to make a bootable DVD or thumb drive, and use it in "live" mode without actually installing it.

That story was coming out every place possible on the planet. For Ace of spades headquarters to not publish it was sticking one's head in the sand. Sometimes events take on a kinetic life and this was one of them. The import of the leaking that opinion went right to the heart of of epic intimidation of the legal system of the United States and for extra credit this acted as a rallying cry for packing the court and potentially diminishing the purpose of the Supreme Court in American Life.
Time will tell if this particular event is a watershed moment in American history. We don't know that yet but damn it, it sure feels like it.

38 Met an old friend and his family last week. He's a doctor for the Fed Gov and since they were available, he really, really thought it was important to get the clot shot. I'd ask him why I needed an unproven not-vaccine for something that has a 99.5% survival rate? Shut up and get the shot he'd explain.

Well, after his first booster he's come down with a rare immune disease similar (but worse according to him) to shingles. Said he won't get another booster, but refuses to budge off of the official narrative that the shots are safe and effective, Ivermectin doesn't work, masks are just great, etc. People just can't admit they were wrong.

40 The Democrats think the abortion tool is one lever to pull to win in November. Many people don't care one way or another, since abortion will be a state by state matter now.
Inflation, border, fuel costs will come back in the headlines before November for most. Got to be more arrows in the Democratic package they will pull out, so hang onto your hats. If nothing else a few good lies about something might work. Assuming Russia doesn't drop a few bombs, then Biden becomes our glorious leader? (for whoever is left)

44 Think of how energized our political systems would be if, similar to the abortion question, major issues were decided at the state level. You might actually have to know when your state legislature met, whether the governor or lt. governor actually wielded power, and who all or any of these people actually are.

I did two shots of Pfizer. I'll do no more, from anyone, for Coof. The reason is that I developed a usually unnoticeable area on my skin that is mildly itchy on the inside to rear surface of one of my upper thighs, It usually does not rise to the level of being noticeable and therefore an issue, but neither has it gone away. It becomes most noticeable when I get hot or sweaty or if the humidity is high. No over the counter and topical anti-itch products make the itchiness go away under those conditions. Wearing loose fitting clothing helps.

51 More vacation guest fun.
I'm not the most tech savvy person but yesterday the wife guest could not access her gmail account on her iphone. She no longer had the gmail app on her phone.

I asked if she could get one from her app store. (I didn't know, I have an Android) she asked me, is there an Apple store nearby?
Says I, No, the app on your phone that you can use to download all you other apps.
No, she "lost" that from the phone too.
Me: Do you want me to help put it back on?
Her: No, I'll talk to my son and he can help.
Conclusion, Late yesterday, still no app store.

59 52 Alton, one of the neighbors bought one about six months ago through Carvana. Delivered to their door, just like in the commercials. A Honda and they don't seem to have any problems with it. With prices being what they are, consider doing this. About sixteen years ago I needed a car but didn't want debt. I found a little station wagon for a couple grand (impossible nowadays) and right away sunk an equal amount into it, some being "do it whether it needs it or not" . I got about five years reliable service out of it before the rust got it (PA car). Figure 9K for a truck, 6K call it overhaul.

Extra "w"? What extra "w"?

Thank you for the "heads up"!

Previous owner had racked up 350K miles on it but talking to the salesman/manager (I know the guy) that's a good deal nowadays and he had somebody scraping up money for it.

Posted by: Huck Follywood, Break The Teachers Unions at May 04, 2022 07:07 AM (CUb6l)

131 The reason behind the ban? An Aug. 20, 2020 poisoning of a Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny. Almost a full year later, the Biden admin (after failing to push gun control through the legislative process) decided to cut a significant supply of ammunition into the United States.

Although current imports that were approved before the ban's passage will continue, no new import will be approved thanks to the Biden administration. So once those ammunition shipments are sold, there will be no restock.

Someone posted this yesterday:

We end this opinion where we began. Abortion presents a profound moral question. The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return that authority to the people and their elected representatives. The judgment of the Fifth Circuit is reversed, and the case is remanded for further proceedings consistent with this opinion. It is so ordered.

The majority opinion draft is essentially the SCOTUS admitting that judicial activism is wrong and that they shouldn't be engaged in it. It represents a very real threat to the democratic agenda and their most power tool to advance it.

That's why you're seeing such a strong reaction to it. Democrats and their boot licking sycophants don't give two shits about women in general or pregnant women in particular. It's all about the money and the power.

And yet, to read the very sad stories of truly life altering, debilitating reactions to the vaccine over at realnotrare, the vast majority of them state that they are completely blown off by their doctors when trying to relate their symptoms to that poisonous vax. They're belittled, they're told they have "anxiety." The vast majority of them aren't believed, although some doctors do acknowledge it.

If history can ever be written honestly again it will be known as one of the great concerted crimes against humanity.

Roe and Casey arrogated that authority.

Definition:
1. To take or claim for oneself without right; appropriate: synonym: appropriate.
2. To ascribe on behalf of another in an unwarranted manner.
3. To assume, or claim as one's own, unduly, proudly, or presumptuously; to make undue claims to, from vanity or baseless pretensions to right or merit.

185 I told my doctor 9 months ago that I was taking ivermectin. He said that I would be dead in 6 months. When I saw him 3 months ago, neither of us mentioned it.

Oh, and no thanks for a flu shot either.

186 The "leaked" decision opinion is not the final decision and is only intended as the current NPC outrage. The final decision opinion will be different.

I think the decision has been cast. Any retreat will seal the fate of the court, and particularly Traitor Roberts for what it really is...a malleable political tool of the democrats led by a feckless minion.

I think the Supreme Court is simply tired of re-litigating Roe every year and are willing to let the 50 states fight it out.

189 PCIe 5.0-powered GPUs and new ATX 3.0 PSUs are going to be coughing out some major numbers, with "Power Excursions" of up to 1800W spikes of power. For example, NVIDIA's new flagship GeForce RTX 3090 Ti has a TGP rating of 450W, and could have power spikes of up to 1350W while the next-gen GeForce RTX 4090 is rumored to chew 600W, so a power spike of an insane 1800W is there.

The news is coming directly from Intel's Platform Power Specialist, Stephen Eastman, where during an interview with PCWorld, said: "With the new PCIe 5.0 connector and ATX 3.0, Intel and the PCI SIG address what both euphemistically call "power excursions." You might recognize it by the less sugar coated term "power spike." The PCI SIG has basically outlined the capability of a GPU to exceed the maximum sustained power of the card by 3x. That means a 600 watt card on a PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR connector is allowed to spike to 1,800 watts for 100 micro-seconds".

191 The potential for Starship is amazing. But I have to wonder: safely landing a beast that big and that heavy on an unprepared surface on an uncharted planet, then launching it again without any ground support whatever, strikes me as improbable, to say the least. Or am I missing something?
