Gun Thread: High and Far Out Edition!

Sgt Friday 1 050122 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

A quick peek at the calendar tells us it's May, dammit! And we all know what that means, don't we? Don't we? Do not we know what this means? Are you high and far out? It means it is Buy Ammo and Go to the Range Month! That's right, all month long we celebrate the joy of shooting and our wonderful 2nd Amendment. So I encourage you all to a) buy ammo, and ii) go to the range! If you own a gun then dig it out of your sock drawer, run a patch through the barrel, pick up a box o' ammo and go shooting! You don't need to make a big deal about it, just go! If all your guns are at the bottom of the lake, just about every range will have rental guns, so take advantage of one of those. Seriously, it is pretty hard not to have fun shooting even if you suck at it.

Yikes! What happens after May? June happens after May which means the 2022 NoVaMoMe on Saturday, June 11th, is next month! Our pal bluebell is busy working her little fingers to the bone for the benefit of you people so at least you can show up and marvel at her extreme niceness! C'mon, man! Do I really have to beat you over the head with this? You know you like the blog because you are reading it, or at least you like looking at the pictures, so why not come out of the shadows and meet some of the faces behind the Nics? I don't care how big of a weirdo you are in real life, just come to the dang thing and meet some really very nice people. See below for details and registration info!

In addition to being Gunz & Shootin' Month, tis also MoMe season, with other Moron gatherings on the calendar in Colorado, Washington, Alaska and Texas. Holy Shitballs! It's a dang MoMe-palooza! Take a peek at the main page left sidebar, find a MoMe near you, and sign up to attend one. You won't regret it!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Smith & Wesson and Colt Snubby Madness!

clean the lint traps Dammit scaled.jpg
Clean out the lint traps when you're done, mister!

We've seen a bunch of Smith & Wesson revolvers here on the ol' Gun Thread lately, and last week I mixed things up by featuring a Colt Trooper Mk III. Although I am pretty much a Smith & Wesson guy if you peel back a layer and expose the Weasel soft white underbelly, you will find at heart I am just a revolver guy!

Q: Well then what the ever-loving holy Hell could we possibly have this week?
A: Snubby Madness!

SNUBBY ls 1 050122 scaled.JPG

SNUBBY RS 1 050122 scaled.JPG
top - S&W Model 36, bottom - Colt Cobra

Why, we have a 1972 Smith & Wesson five round Model 36, and a 1972 six round Colt Cobra, both in .38 Special and with 1 7/8th and 2-inch barrels, respectively. What a wacky prankster I am! I even amuse Sgt Joe Friday!

Joe amused.jpg

All kidding aside, these are very cool little guns and very bigly fun to shoot. Anyone who watched detective shows back in the day will probably have seen one or both at some point. Both companies made lots of variations of the snubby, and the size would make them good candidates for concealed carry guns, but these are in such great condition I don't want to risk banging (see what I did there?) them up. I'm not sure if it's just the nostalgia or what, but I am absolutely a big fan of these little guns. The tiny grips aren't particularly comfy for me on the Model 36, but then again, it's purpose wasn't for extended target shooting sessions.

Here are good histories of the Model 36 and the Colt Cobra.

Anyone else share my interest in snubbies? Have you ever purchased a firearm out of nostalgia, alone?

First up our pal fd shares a family heirloom.

fd 1 050122 scaled.jpg

I inherited this from my Grandma's second husband, the man I knew as Grandpa. I don't know when or where he got it, he had it as long as I can remember. I played with it when I was a little kid. One time I talked him into letting me take it home with me to make a nice plaque to mount it on, and I also shined it up real nice and shiny. I don't think he really appreciated the buff job, but after 50 years or so the patina has come back.

No, it doesn't shoot those wooden bullets. That is a live training round though.

Very cool, fd! Serial number five? Thanks for sharing!

Next up, our pal blaster has been adding things to firearms!

After the trip to Weasel Acres I have become convinced that all handguns are going to have optics from this point forward. Not just talk. I did a thing. Adapter plate and green dot on the P226.

blaser 1 050122 scaled.jpg

blaster 2 050122 scaled.jpg

Does it work? That's a YES.

And it's a NO. As a system engineer I get that making changes to systems may affect things beyond what you want to affect. My P226 with the optic is not pleased with 115gn ammo anymore. About 1/3 fail to feed one way or another.

Shooting 124gn it's is perfectly happy. Also, I think the P226 was on the edge of happiness with 115gn before. Slide would not lock back when mag emptied and I blamed the mag. With 124gn locks back as designed.

Verrrrry interesting, blaster, and nice shooting! and I suspect you're 100% correct on the lighter 115gr load being the cause of the problemo.

There is a whole thing regarding National Match 1911s with slides that have had metal removed so they would function properly with lighter wadcutter target loads, however, the then weakened slides had a tendency to crack when using the heavier .45ACP ball ammo. The problem is the lighter springs for the target loads. The Colt National Match I featured a while back is an example of a gun with a lightened slide for competition, and there were a number of ammo and recoil spring combinations which were intended to address the situation. Here is an informative article on the NM 1911s which mentions the problem but doesn't actually suggest a solution.

I'm not suggesting you lighten the slide, but here is a link to Wolff Springs which has an entire section of their website devoted to different spring combinations for the 1911, and I suspect if you gave them a jingle they'd be happy to suggest a lighter spring for the Sig which might keep you shooting the more economical 115gr round. If you go this route just be careful when switching ammo.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Ax Weasel
This week we have an Ax Weasel twofer from our pal GWB

I wonder if there's any knowledge among you and the horde on this:
If you mill out your own 80% receiver, but it doesn't work, is it still an actual firearm?

I know a broken firearm is still a firearm for the purposes of most laws. But what if it never reached working status because you drilled the hole wrong or something? Did it go from 80% to 0%? And I'm talking you totally missed where the hole is supposed to go, not off by .1mm and you could drill it out a little more and drop in some JBWeld or something.

Weasel has no idea, and it's a very interesting question! Does it identify as a firearm?

Smart people: now is your time to speak up!

**

Since I'm looking at putting together a less standard AR in the near future I'm trying to take a good look at the different upper offerings and see why this one costs $300, this one $400, and this one $899. Also, folks have mentioned Bear Creek Arsenal before, and they have uppers that I'm looking for at a good price. But they have at least 3 at different price points (all under $400) and the title description for them gives me no reason for the price difference. So I looked a little deeper. One is forged, one is billet (the cheaper one). I understand that difference. One other difference that I do NOT get is one has for "feed ramp", "Single", and the cheaper has "NON-ramped". Is this a big difference?

Any of you AR guys and gals out there able to tackle this one?

Next up our pal Scuba_Dude sends us an excellent video on what it means to shoot in the Biathlon

Amazing. Nice find, Scoob! Thanks!

Our pal Gref sends us a great reminder on NRA Training Courses. https://www.nrainstructors.org/Search.aspx

I got an email from NRA today telling me there are many NRA-certified classes available around the country. You periodically get questions about where to find instruction for pistol shooting, reloading, etc. The NRA webpage at the link gives Morons a list of classes that may be taught in their area. The courses are not free. I need to sign-up for some of these. And to check-out their on-line courses and materials.

Excellent tip Gref! Thank you! Why not check out the link and see if there is something going on near you. In addition to the Competition Division, the Training Classes are something the NRA manages to do very well.

Cigar of the Week
Our pal rhomboid brings it with another excellent cigar review. Thanks rhomboid!

rhomboid Star 2 050122 scaled.jpg

Visited a cigar bar with an old friend and came across something I'd read about, the Stillwell Star, from Steve Saka's Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust. Unique line of four different blends - a mix of premium cigar long-filler tobacco, and pipe tobacco. Saka's collaborator on this is the blending chief for Cornell and Diehl, a top pipe tobacco company. Friend and I picked the Aromatic (there are also an English, Bayou, and Navy No. 1056 - named for the destroyer Saka served on in the Navy). Small batches and top tobaccos, so they're not giving them away - $17/stick online. Special occasion cigar. Fantastic - smooth, rich, natural sweetness, perfect burn. Of course pipe smokers will enjoy these. Thinking I'll get a sampler of all 4 for special occasions. Also in the picture are my 45 Colt and 30-06 cigar punches, in this case we used a v-cutter on the Stillwells and a La Aroma de Cuba Edicion Especial, about which more another time.

What does the Cigar of the Week feature need? A Cigar Vixen, that's what!!

You're welcome.

ATTENTION NoVaMoMe 2022!!

The social and cultural event of the season, NoVaMoMe 2022 is on the calendar! That's right, you people have a chance to meet many of your online pals on Saturday, June 11th beginning at 1pm until dark, or such time as it gets busted up by the cops. We have an exciting location in the Northern Virginia area which allows extended time for visiting. Admission is $25 which includes food and soft drinks, with a cash bar. This year the menu is BBQ chicken and pork with the usual sides and cookies for dessert. Appetizers begin just after 1pm and dinner is 3pm. Want to be one of the cool kids? Just send an email to novamome at protonmail dot cee oh emm, pass the rigorous screening process to obtain registration details, then sign up to attend! Easy-Peasy!

Each year, I spend a fair amount of time haranguing people to come to a MoMe. Any MoMe! I cannot overemphasize how much fun these things are, and how much we want YOU to come! We plan for the crowd in general but also consider the needs of the introvert lurkers and provide plenty of potted plants for those so inclined to hide behind. All kidding aside, you are completely welcome to slink-in, eat, drink and people-watch, and then slink-out. It is a 100% zero pressure event. If you can handle a backyard picnic, you can definitely handle this.

Win a Dream Date with Weasel!
Back by tepid demand, a separate raffle for the Gun Thread gift basket will be held. This fabulous prize includes an entire day of shooting and personalized one-on-one handgun & rifle coaching and instruction at Weasel Acres on a mutually agreeable date with yours truly. The lucky winner will be able to not only bring and shoot their own weapons, but also try out a variety of WeaselWeapons using WeaselAmmo!

We will end the day with dinner at a good Mexican place in nearby Appomattox. Pretty much a dream date with Weasel! The winner will be responsible for their travel to and from Central Virginia, hence the separate drawing.

Don't be a pathetic girly-man loser, register today!

I do have that derringer in .38sp/.357mag. It is not conducive to long range sessions, either, though partly because you only get 2 shots at a time.

But it is a fun weapon, and can be packed around when other guns cannot. (Being all metal, it certainly isn't a *light* weapon for its size.)

I'm ready to order the barrel so it's time to make a decision. 22 Do I like snubbies? No, they're difficult to shoot, loud, and slow to reload. Despite all that, I carry a Kimber K6. All I have to do is draw the gun and pull the trigger. No safeties to switch off, no magazines to drop at the worst time, etc.

23 I actually installed the new HI Viz sights on the Ruger 10/22 without destroying the rifle or the sights. That was not a sure thing and runs contra to my usual technique of 'use a bigger hammer'.

Haven't had a chance to try it yet, possibly tomorrow, but the HI VIZ are certainly brighter and easier to see.

24 As to the snubby topic, I have an old model 36 just like the one pictured. I swapped out for combat grips and like it a lot more. Too bad its days under the seat of my car caused rusting on the cylinder and it doesn't look so nice anymore. Still functions very well, and is still one of my favorites just for the nostalgia.

38 No range time this weekend. Last weekend we did some revolver shooting.

Revolvers are great because you get to choose the manner of dumping your brass, which makes them perfect for shooting in muddy conditions.

My weapon of choice was the Charter Arms Undercoverette, which is breaking in nicely. It's chambered in .32 Magnum but because that is still rare and crazy expensive, I opted for the far less expensive .32 ACP.

The Fiocchi stuff runs well and after a bit, I was able to get a feel for the point of aim, which is a little different from .32 Long or .32 Magnum.

Still, I'm ready to get out the auto-loaders. It's been too long.

43 Biathlon....

Good video. A few observations.

First, one of the reasons to not do prone shooting in the biathlon? Because no matter your heart rate control, you're still breathing - AND you're lying on your chest. He probably could have been more successful just using the standard shooting breathing concepts of shoot as the sight goes across the target. (UP and DOWN went that sight; UP... DOWN... UP... DOWN....)

Second, did you see the skiers looking at him as he ran? "Vat sort of idiot runs in de snow?" (Cross country skiing isn't that hard on level ground, and he could have tried it. But, whatever.)

Third, this is the sort of thing I've suggested for training for the stressful situation. (Though, I suggest you run in place; otherwise the RO might get... twitchy.) Do some push-ups, too, to get the muscles going. (X-country skiing also tends to pump your arms and get them fatigued, as well.)

Nice video.

44 My wife has a S&W Model 37 - Airweight. I believe it is exactly like the Model 36 you pictured, but it has an aluminum frame.

The gun is from her grandfather, who was a judge in Ft. Worth. I believe it was usually in his desk in his chambers, but he would sometimes carry in his pocket if he thought a defendant might have some potentially "feisty" family members in the courtroom.

52 Rhomboid, very nice cigar review.
I had an Oliva Melanio post yard work. Very nice.
I'd do reviews except I don't have the palate to do justice to the flavors.

I envy people who can light a cigar and talk about the flavors, you know, coffee, chocolate, cherries, brussel sprouts and okra.
Those kind of things. I taste tobacco, good or poor quality. The Oliva is top notch btw. I cannot abide flavored cigars much like I can't abice flavored pipe tobacco.

End of rant.

Concealing is the purpose of a snubbie. They're dinosaurs in many respects, but detectives carried in a shoulder holster under a jacket, just like TV.
Without a holster you'd want a hammerless one. Much easier to extract from where ever without snagging.
But they're heavy for their size and their limited capacity makes them not so popular any more.

57 And I got hot brass down the shirt.

I wore a 3/4 zip long sleeve shirt with a high neck tshirt underneath.

Brass went down the zipped up outer shirt, under the high necked tshirt and only stopped at the belly band concealed holster I had on under it all. I have a burn on my stomach.
Hot brass finds a way.

Hi Catherine! Welcome to the Gun Thread!

The compact snubbies are light and easily concealable which make them a good choice for, well, concealing. The short barrel makes them suitable for close range defensive shooting.

Posted by: gourmand du jour at May 01, 2022 07:06 PM (jTmQV)

Yes. Except for a few handguns with some weird frame mounted bracketry, the optic moves with the slide.

On a slide that has not been milled (ie, material removed) for an optic, you add the mass of the adapter plate and the optic to the slide. It may not be very much, but it doesn't have to be.

Yes, they are optimized for concealed carry. You still need a holster even if doing pocket carry to prevent lint or chewing gum wrappers, etc. from lodging in the barrel and also protecting the trigger against getting caught.

Pocket carry is the easiest carry out there, period. Also very discrete if you wear reasonably loose-fitting pants.

68 Great thread, Weasel!

Blaster, about the slide issue: I'm guessing more weight + lighter load= insufficient recoil for the slide to lock back correctly.

One can lighten a slide, see linked article, so the slide will operate correctly with lighter loads, but, the downside, it also may weaken the firearm to the point full power, or +p loads might be taking a chance.

Unless it's stainless, loaded weight is usually less than you get with a subcompact autoloader.

79 Is carrying the purpose of a snubbie?

Posted by: Catherine at May 01, 2022 07:18 PM (ZSsrh)

Carrying VERY concealed was often the point of a snubbie. In a coat or pants pocket. Or in a small shoulder holster as someone mentioned. Since you don't have as much barrel to clear, it might be a tiny bit faster on the draw.

Snubbies actually brought about the Saturday Night Special, I think. Which turned out to be a crap gun (sometimes, anyway) and led to some cries for gun control.

Posted by: GWB at May 01, 2022 07:30 PM (dO2Sg)

80 I like snubbies for EDC, especially in 38 special or 32 mag. No safeties to worry about, no slides to work, just pull the damn trigger five or six times. But I've made sure I am accurate with them at SD distances and have read enough about the effectiveness of the calibers.

82 Did get to the range, but will break it into two comments and I have two things to yammer about.
First, put another 100 rounds through Bubby Fly, the bubba-fied G17. Gun performed well, very well when I squeezed the damn trigger instead of jerking it.

The jerking came because I was practicing what I suck at: one handed drills. Seriously, it's like I'm having to learn how to shoot all over again after 30ish years of shooting two-handed only.

Two (three if we count the squeeze, don't jerk) lessons: One, a red dot sure AF helps with one handed shooting...though the Nurse out-shot me one handed without a dot. Two, slow down. Yes, a quick one handed shoot might be required in a gunfight, but slow down for the second.

The other part of the range trip was putting more rounds through the Rock Island STK100...which I'll handle separately.

I'm old enough that I don't go in for the new "skinny" cut. For one thing, I actually walk around and use stairs, so I have noticeable calf muscles.

A snubbie will comfortably fit in the standard cut dress pants with a decent belt. At a former office job, I carried that way for years without incident.

86 Nope nope nope on the reload drill. Close, but no cigar. Every shooter would be better if they viewed the physical handling of firearm as a martial art. In this instance the coach has the shooter leave their arm away from the body, not good no stability, no guarantee that mag well will be in the correct space. From arms extended shooting position, while releasing the mag,, bring the firearm back, placing your elbow firmly on your belt off center (leaving the firearm) this puts the firearm in EXACTLY the same spot everytime. Which from a stress and fine motor skills perspective is very helpful. Finally , the clearance (removing any cover garment) and presentation of the new mag should be occurring at the same time as the empty mag is being released. Sounds picky but I seen students do all kinds of fun stuff attempting to reload and if you stress em it gets worse.

Do everything the same way every time. Under stress you are going to do what you normally do. Having the correct muscle memory is absolute in increasing survival odds.

I went the last time it was in Houston, about 10 years ago. I only went to the manufacturer exhibit hall - no meetings. The exhibits are incredible. Every firearm, optics, and accessory part maker in the country has a display, with examples of current models that you can examine and handle, free catalogs, and representatives to talk with.

There were no firearms or ammo sales or orders taken. I cannot recall if optics were for sale. Some of the parts makers sold items or took orders. Entrance is free for NRA members. I plan to go again this time.

94 150 round review of the Rock Island STK 100.
This is an all-metal Glock-part, Glock-magazine compatible pistol. It comes optics-ready...but only for the Vortex Venom/Demon. Cest le'vie. Despite the Glock mag compat, the grip angle is very much like a 1911 style, though it's a bit thick from the backstrap to the trigger as a result. The metal frame is two piece clamshell, held together with three screws instead of plugs like a polymer Glock clone. Slide is either a G17 clone or damn close to it...couldn't see any difference.

It will not fit in a G17 kydex holster.

It's heavier than a Glock 17, but the extra weight made it easier to shoot, one handed. The Vortex is working fine, and it still allows use of the iron sights if needed.

They do not suggest unscrewing the lower screws, so cleaning is supposed to limited to what you can get at without taking the trigger group out, I guess. That said, you can remove the screws (or tighten them down, as the back out over time and use) with a small standard slotted screwdriver.

The aluminum grip is smooth in hand, like a combat grip from the old days, though there is texturing...it's not super sticky. 1/2

I did not have any problems with the smooth grips, but all shooting has been done on the range with dry hands. It really does feel comfortable in the hand without the modern stipple jobs. The slight texturing worked fine, one handed and two handed, the gun is heavy-ish and that helps with the 9mm recoil as well.

It IS a Glock clone though and limp wristing can cause failures to feed.

Range report because Blaster has fallen down on his usual first report from the MGC outing. Today was sight review Sunday. I rented the G48 MOS with crimson Trace red dot and Hrothgar the G17 MOS with Holosun. Blaster brought his 226 with the green dot. After shooting the two glocks I have decided that the G48 MOS with holosun sight is my next purchase. The gun fits my hand perfectly and I have the G44 to practice with.

117 Rock Island STK 100 revive concluded (spam filter is being a butt today too)

Trigger is light, without the usual Glock 'hump' and a somewhat vague break point, more like a SIG/Kahr.

Accuracy was fine with 115gr ammo. The barrel is an unusual twist rate, the manual lists a 1 in 16 twist! While online comments indicate that is a typo and it may be a 1 in 10. In comparison a G17 is around 1 in 9 (just under 1 in 10) Barrel length is 4.5"
Allegedly, it does not stabilize heavier bullet weights, haven't fully tested that as I'm mostly on 'happy path' testing so far.

I'm not sure I'd recommend it. It was cheap, about $300 before tax and transfer fees. It does take Glock 17 mags, but NOT P-mags, sadly those do not seat.
Honestly...just spend the extra $ on a G17 unless you really want the extra weight or the novelty of an all metal Glock.

As I said, if you look at vintage pictures, trigger use back in the day was very different. Some of it may have been the stiffness of the pull.

it's like the old FBI training *not* to use the sights ("they will only slow you down!").

As someone who watches more old movies than new ones, I found it unremarkable.

Now I see two new arguments. Both stupid.

1) Free speech doesn't include speech the government doesn't like. It ONLY includes speech the government approves of.

2) Elites use free speech to control you! We need uh, other elites, to make sure you don't hear speech from other normies...because the first group of elites will use it to control you!

128 Read someinfo on the new Walther PDP F series especially for female shooters. Lot of stuff about grip designed specifically for small hands and easier to operate slide. I am tempted enough to try and find one as they are pretty scarce but turns out there is actually one close by in MD. Going to at least check it out before I order the Glock. There are no G48MOS to be had in any store in MD or VA so it will have to be Guns.com.

131 This week I tried out two FRT's for form and function. I installed a Rare Breed in an Aero M4E1 and an Alamo-15 in a DoubleStar Star-15. Shot both out to 225 yards on a torso sized steel target. Both ran fine doing 2 and 3 round bursts and plenty accurate from a bi-pod setup. The Alamo-15 has a better feel for both the trigger pull and the forced reset. I was able to get the rhythm for the Alamo while the Rare Breed was a little less in being able to pick up it's cadence, although both worked just fine. If your interested in this type of trigger, go with the Alamo.

They're small, light, good for tussling. If you have to make body contact shots, a snubbie revolver works better than most automatics (Springfield XD and a couple of others excepted). I use a pocket holster for my S&W 36 and it hangs out in my jacket pocket pretty invisibly.

139 "One other difference that I do NOT get is one has for "feed ramp", "Single", and the cheaper has "NON-ramped". Is this a big difference?"

I'll try to tackle this one w/ the warning that my limited experience is based entirely on Colt AR products, both GI and civilian platforms. Carbine AR's (i.e. M4 platforms) have a slightly different, extended feed ramp in the upper receiver, optimized to feed M855 (aka "green tip") and M855A1 rounds. Weapons w/o this improvement tended to jam in situations when the weapon was fired fast in semi-auto, or in burst/full auto. This was especially the case if the weapon didn't have an "H" marked buffer, which signified that the buffer had two steel weights and one of tungsten, which slowed the recoil impulse. Colt AR's w/ this improvement have "M4" marked just above where the gas tube enters the receiver above the chamber. (1 of 2)

151 (Continued feed ramp answer, 2 of 2)

If your AR doesn't have the improved feed ramp or the "H" buffer, you're limited to using M193 ammunition in your rifle. Whether this is a problem for you depends entirely on what you want to use your AR for. If it's to plink at the range, it's not a problem. If you're betting your life on it as a home defense or SHTF rifle, it's a big problem. You're losing the capability to use a large supply of ammo (M855 "green tips").

155 Quick range report, Weasel ...

We were traveling last week and now guests here shortly. So ... Was at range this morning and began doing off-hand shooting at 5 yards. Very interesting and to see how left and right war with one another. The best advice I got was to practice picking the gun up with my non-dominant, left hand -- start from there, as sit were -- and then move into either two handed or one-handed "fighting stance." Good practice.

I followed up on the advice I got last time -- thanks Blake! -- but the local IDPA is not especially friendly. They require a holster class ... but don't offer one and have no suggestions of "where to go" on their web site.

Have to run. Try to be back later.

The local IDPA club decided to make your life hard? Wow, that seriously screwed up. Okay, I don't know your location, however, sometimes the same people who do CCW training do a holster class. Also, check the local indoor ranges. But, beyond that, look around for another club to shoot with. If an IDPA club is that unwelcoming to a new shooter, I find it hard to believe they're worth shooting with. I've shot a lot of different places, and I have yet to have a club act like that. I'm really sorry that happened.

I took precisely three (3) shots to determine that I did not like it, not one bit, not at all... A rifle in that calibre is a veritable lead-slinging hate crime, in my exalted opinion!

Otherwise, I had a productive day of shooting a variety of other, more useful AR-type rifles with conventional cartridges, so all is well...

198 It was the boy this time. Sam Fathers had let him come to the camp with the men, but after them, not shaming him but still putting him in the hierarchy, a tenderfoot, low, much to learn, tend to the menial projects.
The boy carried a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun, lever-action, good for shooting at grasshoppers in the hot Nebraska sun when the soil baked and curled and you could pick the brass BBs out of the dry soil and put them back into the cylinder and keep killing grasshoppers. But that was before the hunt-camp when the men let the boy come with them.
"Yao, that is a BB gun," said one of the men. Then they drank bourbon around the fire and laughed at the boy. Then the boy pointed the Red Ryder at the man's drunk, swollen, red eye and pulled the trigger and put the man's eye out, and the laughing stopped, and then it started again.

213 6.5 Creedmoor vs 308? It's a great question. If I were limited to one AR10 that might be the way to go. Problem with the 6.5 is it's slow out of the gate. Inside of 600 yards a 150gn 308 at 2900+fps will smoke a 140gn 6.5 launched at 2750. At 700 yards and beyond the 6.5 comes into it's own. Having several , I've opted for 308 and 6 Creedmoor. The 6 Creedmoor is a whole different ballgame!! I'm getting over 3100 fps with a 105gn. .243. For my purposes, the 6 Creed is outstanding!!

The problem I have with .327 magnum is that it's too heavy.

The genius of .32 magnum is that you take a compact .38, make six smaller holes rather than five and then use higher-velocity rounds to give you one extra cartridge AND better ballistic performance.

I get that .327 gives you ultimate variety of ammo, but since it uses a .357 frame, it's that much heavier. And since I'm fine with .38 (and by extension .32 magnum), I don't see the need for the extra oomph.

I really like the Undercoverette. If .32 Long were cheaper (it's out there), I'd be recommending it to people who are recoil-shy. It is mild to shoot and yet you get twice the energy of .22 LR or .25 ACP.

Very pleased but maxed the dollars out. Gun Jesus has a couple of utube vids on that model, the best of the BAR's. Unfortunately as I get home last night with a gun mate who bought a RDP at the same time and started our usual strip down on the weapon, I find the firing pin missing from mine and the breach block missing from the RDP. Poo, to put it mildly. The old bugger who had sold both guns had forgotten to put these reasonably vital parts back in the gun and they are in his gun safe 30 mile away. Weasel,
The gun f'd showed is probably a pocket or boot pistol. Single shot black powder percussion which would make it circa mid-1830s or later. There is no place for a ramrod and that sharp line where the barrel meets the frame means it could be what is called a screw barrel pistol. You unscrew the barrel, drop in a round ball, and fill the cavity with powder, then screw the barrel back in place. No speed loader option.

They were sometimes called a muff gun. (Get your minds out of the gutter.) Women could carry it concealed if they were using a muff to keep their hands warm.

Try a spring-powered grip strengthener. It make a big difference.

Pretty soon you'll be firing .44 magnum one-handed.

Actually, I'm often better with one hand - my problem is that I let the supporting hand overpower my relaxed shooting hand. Without support, my grip is much stronger (because it has to be!) and I'm more accurate.

Last week using .32 ACP (not exactly artillery) I was hitting low to the right. If figured that because I'm using non-standard ammo for the revolver, that's just how it goes. So I tried it with one hand. Whoops! Shots started hitting on center!

Went back to using support but clenched the *whole hand* and got much better results.

Eggs, perhaps. It had been hours since his last banana, and the edgy hunger brought by the Bath Salts His Excellency provided was honed to a fine point. Ursus remebered simpler days, when his own father taught him to shoot, and ultimately, to kill.

Sharon, if you can check out the green dot version of the 507. Everyone I know who's compared them prefers them. Only downside is slightly worse battery life, which since batteries can be changed w/o dismounting the sight on a Holosun, isn't a big deal.

I am overcoming years of not keeping the lower fingers tight enough. It does not happen when I'm firing serious ordnance because I know to hang on tight.

Thus: I can drive nails with .357 magnum but in .38 I would be sloppy. I used to blame the ammo, slightly larger cylinder gap, but when I got into mouse guns, it became obvious what was going on.

I think that's partly why heavier guns are more accurate - they force a strong grip, which brings greater accuracy.

Got to disagree w/ you on that. Aluminum mags are liable to bends and dents which will deadline the magazine. Those bends and dents aren't always visible, which makes them hard to detect by the user. I've seen aluminum mags get bent/dented by the pressure from a seat belt during a rollover by a Hum-Vee. Plastic mags can crack, but the cracks are easier to detect by a soldier. Steel (EX: HK mags) is tougher, but heavier. This a huge disadvantage if you're packing 10-12 mags as your basic load of ammo. Every ounce counts.

Bingo, he gets it. .308 is very competitive out to 1200 mtrs, if you run the right loads and projectiles. I am more than aware of the BC advantage that 6.5 projectiles have but I see 6.5CM as yet another solution to a problem that does not exist. Just more rifle guy gadget stuff. I mean 6.5 Swede Mauser has been around for what 130 years?

Posted by: NZFrank with an M2 at May 01, 2022 08:52 PM (bgJ0E)

330 A little more on the P226. Maybe a bit unclear from my writing - prior to putting the optic on it, it shot 115 grain ammo fine, but a lot of the time it would not lock back on an empty mag. I thought maybe the mags (factory, but 1994 manufacture with the pistol) were not playing well.

After adding the optic, its about 1/3 feed issues with 115 grain. Which is not awesome. But, with 124 grain not only does it feed fine, it locks back the mag on empty every time.

So I think in its original state it was iffy on 115 - whig said that Euro 9s were tuned more for the heavier bullet that makes sense to me. 124 grain FMJ is roughly the same price as 115 if not as plentiful. But most hollowpoints are there, and other defensive ammo even more. So I am going to shoot up all my 115 in other guns and replace with 124.

I am not saying that magpul would be a bad mag, the did kind of revolutionize mags for everybody, however, over time they do wear because of the interactin with the bolt and they may quit working as they should. other mags, made with metal, are not going to have the same issue.

my thought is that if thinking or what would i do if there were no more mags to buy I would rather have new gen metal mags.

My shooting with the 226 is night and day with the optic.

336 M4 Feed ramps and M855 aka GreenTip aka Light Armor Piercing Steel Tip ammo did not coincide with each other. M4 feed ramps were AR improvements as part of the M4 Carbine package that Colt did on the original AR design on their own R&D dime. They were to improve feeding in full auto and also with the shorter more abrupt carbine gas length system. Green Tip will feed fine if you are not doing ammo dumps in an older AR barrel.
That being said, the most problems come when you put an old barrel on a new M4 upper. You have to grind out the feedramps of the old feed ramp style barrel to fit the angle of the M4 upper. If you put an m4 feed ramp barrel on an old upper you have lying around, it will still feed okay but look a bit ugly. M4 upper and M4 cut barrel--good to go. Original AR upper, M4 feed ramp cut barrel, bad feeding.
For the most part, it would be difficult to actually find a barrel or upper that did not have the M4 cuts now unless you are buying from someone who is raiding their old stash or buying a used vintage parts kit. Only reason for a barrel with no feed ramp may be for those that want to put it with an old AR upper and grind out the barrel ramps to fit

Magpul was years ahead of the US Army in making anti-tilt followers a standard feature while the Army mucked around trying to figure out how to do it better than Magpul (and failing).

338 The latest AR-15 magazine anti-tilt followers are sold separately if you want to improve your older mags. Fairly inexpensive. Brownells has them, and I bet most other big gun parts sellers have them.

343 277 ... "There is a seam in front of the "54" that you can't really see in the picture. I can't unscrew the barrel by hand though."

If I'm right about the screw barrel, it would likely be rusted in place. Unless it was carefully cleaned and the threads lubed on a regular basis, rust is inevitable. I've never read if the barrels were rifled or smooth. I suspect smooth to keep the cost down and because they were intended only to be used at arm's length.

Pedersoli makes a kit version of these screw barrel pistols.

Go w/ the HK mags made out of steel, then. Those things are super durable (steel, after all). But their weight is a problem if you're humping it out in the boonies. Going to range, it's not a problem.
Aluminum bodies don't do well going up against the knocks of a cruel, hard world. I think of magazines much like the Army does - reusable, but ultimately, expendable.

358 So I think in its original state it was iffy on 115 - whig said that Euro 9s were tuned more for the heavier bullet that makes sense to me. 124 grain FMJ is roughly the same price as 115 if not as plentiful. But most hollowpoints are there, and other defensive ammo even more. So I am going to shoot up all my 115 in other guns and replace with 124. Posted by: blaster
---------------------
115 gr 9mm ammo is a US mini std as is 147gr. I find that Smith and Wessons prefer it. The original P series Ruger ate anything, and have no idea about 1911's in that cartridge. 124 gr is std for NATO ammo and in Euroland.

You can buy recoil spring tuning kits wiht as set of differently weighted recoil springs for your firearm from Wolff (and perhaps others depending on the firearm). This is often used in competition to gain a bit of an edge in IPSC etc. for such things as making major or minor power factors which affects scoring. The kit simply has different weighted recoil springs and you try each one and fire the desired ammo through it. Doesn't function well, put in another one, and so on. PITA for captured spring systems so don't put your eye out.

Summary, all of the brand name magazines functioned if ugly almost to the end. Lancer was one of the top magazines (has metal reinforced feed lips in a polymer mag shell), another was Okay Industries (original makers of AR magazines in aluminum), Brownells(contract maker of AR magazines for US military in aluminum), and Magpul of course. All did rather well in holding up to things that normal people would not subject them too--2nd story falls with a loaded mag on a rough surface and so on.

A LOT of value in stepping up to the IDPA line, and shooting the whole match with your hideway/backup gun. I have a pair of S&W Model 60s, stainless, with full "L-Frame" type, 3" underlugged barrels. Heavy, but they tame the frame. Favorite snubby though is the 11.5 oz (unloaded) Taurus 85 Total Titanium. Ported barrel just WORKS!

392 Oddbob,
I would build an LR308 or AR-10 in 308W aka 7.62x51 for your initial go. You can always build a 6.5 Creedmoor upper later which is the beauty of the AR system.

6.5 Creedmoor is more a range round and for competition. It makes a decent hunting round but ethically you are not going to be shooting deer at that range anyway where it starts to pull past the 308. 308 ammo will be cheaper over time and any lower setup for 308 will do fine with the 6.5 Creedmoor.

One thing to watch out for on Creedmoor in LR308/AR10 is that people have reported some gas issues with it compared to 308 which affects cycling which means you will either have to have an adjustable gas block or potentially the gas system may have to be shorter or longer than the std. rifle design.

There was a third rifle in the final US Army M1 Garand replacement competition in the mid-Fifties: A privately-developed British rifle submitted by the UK, the .280 caliber (7.2mm) Janson EM-2. A bullpup design. (The current standard-issue British Army rifle, the SA80, looks similar but is not the same action.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EM-2_Bullpup_Rifle

The US Army rejected it after the M-14/FAL/EM-2 trial because it did not like the less powerful than the.308 cartridge and did not like the bullpup design, either.

The fed gov't in general and the Ordnance Dept in particular have historically not been fans of anything new. As I understand it, John C. had to use the gas trap design because Ordnance said "What? You want to drill a hole into the side of a barrel? That's crazy talk. No."

Posted by: rhennigantx at May 01, 2022 09:25 PM (yrol0)

Both the Army and Marines made the M-14 their Class A standard issue rifle in 1950-something. The Army sent most of its initial M-14s to units in Europe,l to use the same 7.62x51 ammo as the NATO armies. Then the Army brainiacs decided to arm most of its units going to Vietnam with M-16s instead of M-14s. I do not know when the Marine Corps switched to M-16s in Vietnam and then for standard issue.

The USMC began using M-16A1s in 1967, but the conversion process was slow. USMC M-14s saw prominent use at Hue and Khe Sanh, before passing out of service by late 1969. Some units took detours along the way. One battalion used the Stoner 63 system (in rifle/carbine/SAW modes) as a field test before trading them in for M-16s.

440 396 Either caliber, I'm planning on a 24" barrel with a +2 gas system and and adjustable block. Posted by: Oddbob
--------------------------
Oddbob, Watch out then for what type of adjustable gas block that you buy. Basically, the screw type, you have to remove the adjustment screw periodically to decarbonize it. Otherwise, your adjustable block becomes effectively non adjustable. Some of the more expensive ones are better at adjustment and figure out now if you want to run suppressed. That introduces some new factors into the equation.

Semi autos are best tuned up for reliable operation for one specific bullet weight and a somewhat std. powder charge--they tend to start hiccuping outside of that.

I sent Weasel a report on my travails with my Bear Creek upper.

It was entertaining, in a "Gee, I now know much more about the guts of my Ar-15 than I had originally planned" sort of way.

Gas key was not staked correctly.
Barrel was not tightened to specs. It actually wobbled!

Once I fixed those issues everything was fine, and I would still buy one, but I would also go over it from head to toe, assuming nothing was done correctly.
