Absolute Comedy Great Gilbert Gottfried, RIP, After a Long Fight With Muscular Dystrophy

Straight up one of the funniest human beings on the earth. One of the few guys who could make you laugh so hard you wanted him to stop.

Or, he could be so annoying that you wanted him to stop. Sometimes he'd just be cracking himself up.

Gilbert Gottfried, the comedian, "Aladdin" star and owner of one of the most iconic voices in Hollywood, has died after battling a long illness, his family announced Tuesday. He was 67.

His publicist told the Washington Post that he died due to complications from muscular dystrophy.

"We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert's honor," his family wrote on Twitter.

I met Gilbert Gotfried on the street one time in around 2005. He was more than willing to talk with me for about ten minutes.

One thing I told him was: I try to find out where you're appearing, but I can't find the information. Other comedians have websites where they post upcoming club dates; you should do that.

In the Gilbert Gottfried voice you all know, he tilted his head to one side, abashed, and said, "Yeahhhh, you're right, I really have to look into getting one of those."

Remember, this was around 2005. The internet was not completely new at this time. The idea of putting up a GilbertGottfried.com site with his club dates should not have been a newsflash.

But I think he just was only about comedy, not about business.

Here's his real voice, by the way. He didn't give he me the real voice; he kept to the kayfabe.

He uses his real voice, mostly, describing his horrible year as the replacement cast on Saturday Night Live, after the originals left.

Oh, I completely forgot his roast appearances!

His roast of George Takei. Very, very NSFW.. Gilbert spends a bit of time on the "gay" angle, if you can believe that.

And then he actually gets into more NSFW areas.

His roast of Joan Rivers, though the opening roast of emcee Kathy Griffin is worth the click itself.

I believe almost all humor is based on cruelty. Whether you are cruel to a spouse, ethnic group, friend... or like Rodney Dangerfield, you make fun of yourself... there has to be a target.

Even slapstick... look at the Stooges, Keystone Cops, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby....

So, if you can't tell a joke because it 'might' offend someone... ie be cruel to someone... it just ain't funny... and comedy dies.

Posted by: Romeo13 at April 12, 2022 05:48 PM (oHd/0)

70 Gilbert on Stern had that rare ability to take a joke, beat it to death until you couldn't breathe or believe it, then magically revive it again like the Walking Dead and make you piss your pants until you were nearly dead from dehydration. Norm made me laugh more, but no one ever made me laugh harder than Gilbert.

You'd think being arrested would have done the trick.

Plus, how bad did it have to be to be a dem and get arrested in NY for corruption? Was he at a hospital for kids with cancer and a guy handed him a bag with a dollar sign on it?

It's not like there're laws for Dems who steal money. That's ridiculous. Especially in NY. I mean, really?

I figure this Benjamin guy must have done something to someone in the Party, or there'd be no reasonable prosecutor willing to hear this out.

130 Saw Gilbert in the Village before I had ever heard of him. Comes wandering on stage at the Comedy Cellar, like a lost little old man. Talks to himself in a heavy, nearly incoherent Jewish accent, gets confused, stops and starts. He never switched to stand up or jokes of any sort. Once the audience collectively got what he was up to, he had us all laughing our asses off for a full 10 minutes. Just brilliant. Daring and brilliant.

RIP Gilbert

134 So basically, Gottfried was like Fanny Bruce with her Yiddish accent or Maurice Chevalier with his lower class Parisian accent. Those two also could speak "normally" when they chose to do so, but in public their comic personae we're mostly "on".

Did I just write, "comic personae"? Oh, man.

That's what was so shocking. Finally see him again after being away so long, then this.

Granted, taping was probably a while ago, but to see his face (and that voice) after so long was surprising. He was one of the earliest cancelled voices, for that damn duck commercial, and didn't see much of him after. And now, won't be able to see.

Hopefully he and Robin Williams can crack some jokes, a la Genie and Iago of Aladdin, up in Heaven.

136 I had to work all day and am just catching up on news. Gilbert was one of my all time favorites. Back when Stern was still worth a shit, anytime Gilbert sat in on the news it was incredible. Him and Artie Lange together were fantastic, but my favorite clip is him and Sam Kinison from 1990. They were riffing on the Ryan White death and it is absolutely crazy - it's still floating around on YT - I'll have to find the link.

137 Gilbert Gottfried and Sam Kinison sit in on the news on Stern - 1990:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aP0cOsN41es

The part you want to hear starts at 15 minutes and 52 seconds in and it is awesome.

Lastly, forgot to mention, the Gilbert appearance on Norm MacDonald Live is an all time classic. Netflix took the whole episode off of YT a couple years ago, so you have to look around for it. It was a two-parter and I was laughing at it for days.

144 69 I believe almost all humor is based on cruelty. Whether you are cruel to a spouse, ethnic group, friend... or like Rodney Dangerfield, you make fun of yourself... there has to be a target.
Posted by: Romeo13 at April 12, 2022 05:48 PM (oHd/0)
-------

I have to disagree. In part because saying every way to make someone laugh involves being cruel seems like a sick way to view the world. In larger part because my theory is that all of comedy is actually based on incongruity.

We find things funny when they are not quite the way they should be (or at least the way we think they should be), things that defy our expectations. The "I can't believe he said that!" form of comedy obviously fits; it's right there in the description. Roasts and other sorts of "transgressive" comedy are the same. There are plenty of jokes that don't involve anything I would call cruel, but I've yet to come across one that doesn't play with expectations. This also explains why puns are funny (at least to some of us).

Sadly for television, "subverting expectations" does not automatically yield comedy gold.
