A bit of happy news: Our parish completed it's census recently and I've had a peek at the results. Since the beginning of the Rona freakout, we have added over 500 new households to the rolls. So, that contributes the the parish's total congregation count of around 22,000. There's hope for us after all. Now, to be sure, they all don't attend weekly Mass. Except on Easter. Then they'll take 'my' parking spot, and 'my' favorite pew. And for this I am thankful. . . Sortof. . . I guess. Posted by: Tonypete at April 11, 2022 12:59 PM (Msys3) 50

I just had to flee my office because our boss was wrangling with one of the faculty members. There's a big flap about who should pay for the latter's Dropbox access. It's always been the office who paid for it, and so we set it up as an automatic charge annually to our credit card. Well, new boss says, "We ain't gonna pay that." Result: a big hassle about getting a refund, during which the guy can't access his account -- which he needs to do every day.
My suggestion was going to be, "Let it slide this year, we'll avoid the refund business and pay for it. Then he goes in next week and changes the card to his own. Solved." My boss wouldn't let me talk, so I got up and left. Twenty minutes later it seems to be over, for now. New Boss is the kind who can never admit he's wrong, so this kind of thing was always on the horizon. I just wish they'd go into one of their own offices to argue. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards ----------------------------------- Well, yes and no. The Tsar had an emotional and religious significance that Putin lacks along with a historical tradition. That is why the rule of strongmen unless converted into something like monarchial succession ultimately fails. The closest that worked sort of was the Byzantium system of adopting un related adults as the new emperor--maintaining the fiction of continuous ruling with the benefits of new blood. Otherwise, death or overthrow is the fate of tyrants and their rule departs with them. Posted by: whig at April 11, 2022 01:12 PM (Iq9dF) 158

I got an error code in the last thread....
Monday before Easter, the Gospel reading today (catholic), Mary, Martha, and Lazarus are throwing a party for Jesus. Mary pours perfumed oil on Jesus' feet. Then Judas pipes up: she shouldn't do that, she should give the money away instead. But the Gospel writer (Jn) was quick to add that it wasn't because Judas thought about the poor, but that he was a thief and stole from the money pouch...(Jn 12)...we have had embezzlers from the beginning. Carbon credits are the same. They try to make people feel bad for doing a nice/fun thing, so that we will give them money. Posted by: Sassy at April 11, 2022 01:15 PM (xSICi) 187

Anyone think Le Pen has a chance in France?
The majorityor close to it (49.8%) went for the hard left authoritarian socialist wimp and the hard-hard-left socialist. So no, probably not. In order to win, she would have to pick up every other voter, which is impossible, or would need some of Macrons and Mélenchons voters to switch to her, which is merely highly improbable. I dont know enough about the French election system to say more; it appears to be an actual runoff system like we have here in some states, but whether people who didnt vote in the first round can vote in the second round, I dont know, and that could potentially make a huge difference. Well, yes and no.
Posted by: whig at April 11, 2022 01:12 PM (Iq9dF) I think he's leaning into that role. Putin has repeatedly championed the Eastern Orthodox church (it helps that the Russian Patriarch is his tool). He's also a Slavic champion (as opposed to the pro-Western faction) and at least pays lip service in public to the needs of the peasants. Once Vlad has identified a successor he can trust, he'll retire and hand the power off to a new tyrant. The rule of Tzars will very likely go on with a new life, though perhaps not in a bloodline lineage. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, RIP Oregon Muse at April 11, 2022 01:18 PM (XvPQV) 212

--------------------- Describing Le Pen as far right is a reach. Le Pen's stated goals are much more congenial to French socialism economically. It is her nationalism and dislike of immigration that makes her toxic to the globalist leaders of the Socialists but not necessarily to the rank and file Socialist party voters. France, like the US, has increasingly only had economic growth in a few cities while most of the rest of France have suffered. Centralization always works that way. Washington state tax authorities are capable of detecting sham "land purchases" and "subleases" done purely to avoid payment of Washington taxes by claiming residence in another state. A more recent example of the type would be Marshall Tito. Strong, authoritarian leaders generally eliminate all strong rivals, which leads to no one in power except useless yes-men when the end comes.
Posted by: Tom Servo ------------------------ Better example. Tito did have the advantage of being a war hero that Putin lacks as well as ruling a multi ethnic empire where Tito could play the ethnics against each other. The drab 7 person committee that succeeded him failed in short order because the collapse of the Eastern Bloc made the West curtail credit to the overextended Yugo govt. NATO no longer needed Yugoslavia as a buffer to the Warsaw Pact. With no money, the central government collapsed because it could no longer buy off the different ethnics from going their own way. Dad was born in Missouri and mom in Wyoming, then we lived in New Mexico a few years, so we got a lot of tex-mex and southern cooking. Nor do I. But from what I've read so far the race is pretty much between two people, McCormick and Oz. McCormick seems to be the favorite of Mitch and the establishment. I think one of Trump's biggest goals is to gut Mitch's power and turn the Senate and the House into more America First institutions that he can work with. It might simply be a case of sucking less. But seems kind of dumb to toss away the best president we've had in decades over a Senate race in PA when nobody has made the case the alternative is any better if better at all. He's backed by Oprah.
Yeah so was Trump until he ran against a Democrat. Then suddenly he turned into a demon. Trump is pretty bad in personnel decisions, though. He's a guy that totally goes by instinct and kneejerk reactions and has an ego that won't let him back down. Sometimes it works -- maybe often -- but not when it comes to people. They really seem to be able to fool him. I never watched his cheesy apprentice show, was he terrible choosing people on that, too? Or did they have a staff that did it and he's just show up and deliver the decision? Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 11, 2022 01:51 PM (KZzsI) 440
I just want to point out that Trump's endorsement record is somewhere around 97%.
Jeez. He picks one lemon, and it's 'the walls are closing in'. I admit, he needed to do a lot more firings though. Day One shit. Posted by: GnuBreed at April 11, 2022 01:51 PM (F0YaR) 441

my understanding is*, any part of a gun, is now a gun, and thus subject to federal regulation
even if you make the part yourself *if it becomes law There's the problem. It doesn't need to become a "law" as in passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the President. It's a "regulation" made up by agency bureaucrats unaccountable to the voters and yet enforced as if it were a law. Posted by: Oddbob at April 11, 2022 01:52 PM (nfrXX) 443

That was what stuck with me from Patrick Byrne's book about the steal. Trump was told to his face who was backstabbing him and he looked concerned, but then decided he knew them and they were good people. Shades of W. seeing into Putin's soul or whatever. The story I heard was he was riding a friend's motorcycle headed for the airport and the bike broke down. He was trying to get to the other side of the highway to access some help.

Has Biden yet told of the story of he and Ghandi? How he walked from South Africa to India with Ghandi for over thousands of miles? The part where they had to go by kayak across the Indian Ocean to reach India is spellbinding!

A combo of some people who were genuinely disappointed in some Trump things, others who badly want to be Right About Trump All Along (despite him making a mockery of them for four years), and others taking convenient advantage of the stolen election to raise the profile of Their Guy.

I had a HS friend who was walking along a state highway who got killed by a bus mirror. Shit happens. Don't walk along or across highways if you can. Stay in the woods. Trees are your friend.

So if you have a nice car in WA but not registered you will never be pulled over.
This whole push baffles and concerns me. Its always based on the same thing: a disproportionate number of one ethnic group (almost always blacks) keeps being busted for x crime. The response of the idiot left is to go "well that's mean to blacks, we should stop doing that". But the sane and logical response is "what the hell, blacks, stop breaking the law so much!" I was friends with a guy in HS whose brother was shot dead. His brother was army, riding in a troop truck driving down the road over the hill from a firing range, where a live round somehow skimmed the hilltop, sailed downrange and finally hit this poor guy in the head. Like a million to one shot, literally. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 11, 2022 02:00 PM (KZzsI) 461

---------------- I had two Height brother friends, identical twins. Seems one of them got shot dead getting caught screwing the wife of another HS friend in his house. They wouldn't tell me who the husband and wife were. But they did tell they were present at my 20th Class Reunion. My HS was lit! I am here to appreciate Dr. Enato for using his herbal medicine to cure me from Herpes virus. For 4 years now I have been living with this virus and it has been giving me challenges, I was so perplexed because I have been taking several drugs to be cured but all of my effort was in vain.
