THE MORNING RANT – Do The “Read Banned Books” Activists Support Students Reading “Rush Revere” and “When Harry Became Sally”?

My wife and I visited a crafts fair at our suburban town’s community center recently, and I noticed that a volunteer had placed a sign on the table in the entryway that read “Read Banned Books.”

My initial reaction was annoyance, because I am fed up with obsessive left-wing activists poisoning every realm of public life with politics.

Of course, the sign was referring to the “censorship” in nearby McMinn County, Tennessee of the book “Maus.” You probably heard about the McMinn/Maus controversy when the national media (which applauds censorship and de-platforming of conservatives by Monster Tech) suddenly expressed horror that one specific book related to the Holocaust was not going to be taught in McMinn County schools.

Were students prevented from reading Maus? No. It was just not going to be part of the curriculum.

The school board simply felt there were other materials more appropriate for teaching 8th graders about the Holocaust than one which features nudity, mental hospitalization, vulgar language, and the suicide of the character’s mother, all of which occur in the US, decades after WWII.

Not mandating that students read that book is called “censorship” and “book banning” by the left.

Fine. Then let’s talk about some other banned books that we conservatives need to get in front of our school kids.

With leftist teachers and school boards across America obsessed with transgenderism and pushing it on school children, let’s fight to get “When Harry Became Sally” into school libraries. Here’s a book cover blurb:

This book exposes the contrast between the media’s sunny depiction of gender fluidity and the often sad reality of living with gender dysphoria. It gives a voice to people who tried to “transition” by changing their bodies, and found themselves no better off. Especially troubling are the stories told by adults who were encouraged to transition as children but later regretted subjecting themselves to those drastic procedures.

Or maybe "Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters."

Why, in the last decade, has the diagnosis "gender dysphoria," transformed from a vanishingly rare affliction, applying almost exclusively to boys and men, to an epidemic among teenage girls?

In fact, let’s push for these books to not only be available in school libraries, but let’s make it part of the curriculum, so that these books must be taught. NOT teaching these books to school kids is censorship, right?

And don’t forget, the elite media that invoked the specter of Nazi book burnings because one rural county in Tennessee doesn’t teach one specific book, is the same media that had no criticism of Amazon - which has a super-majority market share - for banning “When Harry Became Sally.” [The Daily Signal – 01/09/2022]

The online giant’s continued censorship of “When Harry Became Sally” is also “insulting to the intellects of people on the left,” Anderson said, because the implication is that Amazon has to “protect you from dangerous ideas [because] you are so fragile that if we sold Ryan Anderson’s book, what? He might persuade you?”

Circling back to school curriculum, one of the enduring gifts that Rush Limbaugh left us was his “Rush Revere” series of children’s history books. Because these books are both patriotic and an excellent way to teach American history, a few non-woke school districts have actually adopted Rush Revere into their curriculum.

Guess how liberals respond when a book from a patriotic American author they don’t approve of is taught to our children? Surprise! They want it “banned.”

I’m alarmed that my child’s class is reading a Rush Limbaugh series. Am I overreacting? [Slate – 9/26/2019]

Find out for yourself if these books contain any subtle messages about minorities and their place in American history.

Having the evidence to support your position will be important if you hope to eliminate these books from future classrooms.

The stock answer to every leftist (including journalists) hyperventilating about “banned books” should be that “Irreversible Damage” belongs on every high school library’s bookshelf, and “Rush Revere” should be taught in every elementary school.

Once the leftists who are so vehemently opposed to “censorship” help us get our books taught in schools, then we can talk about their books. But since the left will fight tooth and nail to keep conservative books out of schools, there is no “conservative principle” that demands we tolerate their propaganda infiltrating our schools.

8 There is no current purpose to school libraries.

Have all children use the overall community's libraries with library cards to which their parents have online check out "read access".

Equity enforced for all kids that way - public, private, homeschool, charter.

And this is how you play to win.

28 As someone who works in a university library (but not *for* the library), I always find "Banned Books Week" or whatever it's called completely ridiculous. No one is preventing any student from reading a so-called "banned" book. Our library has significantly reduced the number of physical books it carries in recent years to make more room for collaborative learning spaces for students.

Any student can use the online library resources to find and obtain a "banned" book if they are so inclined.

76 8 There is no current purpose to school libraries.

Have all children use the overall community's libraries with library cards to which their parents have online check out "read access".
******************
Speaking as a librarian, agreed. Parents should have the right to know what their kids are reading. But everything in the library profession pushes back against this. Including the ALA Bill of Rights. In section VII, it asserts that all people should have privacy in their reading choices. Librarians take this to mean all children, and most don't believe in any parental rights.
Also recently proven in the recent Follett Destiny software controversy, where Follett was planning to add an *option* for parents to not allow their children to read certain books. Librarians lost their minds (on Twitter, natch) and Follett caved.
And don't go thinking public/community librarians are any better; in fact, they are even more extreme. Most will tell you children have the right to total privacy.

79 SIDEBAR: A commenter says that nominating DeSantis would be a "gamble" because we don't know how he'd act when he gets to DC. [ ... ] He was an "extremist" as a Congressman, then ran for Governor in Florida, and governed as an "extremist" there, too. He's established his bona fides more than just about any other "extremist" candidate in history.

My worry about DeSantis - and anyone else, including former President Trump, who seems to be conservative - is what can he actually get accomplished in DC? President Trump was the most extreme and fighter of a conservative President as we have had since Ronald Reagan. And even he could not survive DC, because the entire Deep State (including 90% of the Republican Party) actively worked against him. That includes the leadership in the US military who actively worked against, and lied to, President Trump.

So, for me, it's not a matter of bonafides, it's a matter of ability to get things done. Bonafides and good intentions do not matter. Getting things done and being able to demand those who work for you get things done is what matters. DeSantis can get things done in Florida, but can he - or anyone - get things done in DC?

Start your own book publishing and distribution and retail business.

-----

That point gets made about everything, and that's of course the problem. Every single industry moves as one mass to shut out and shut down and demonize and marginalize half of the population on behalf of the State & Party (doing the things those entities are legally barred from doing). The stock libertarian answer - "buh muh free marketz build ur own bruh" - isn't remotely close to sufficient.

When it gets this far, the answer becomes "start your own society, because this one isn't for you."

I am also under no illusion that the Deep State is even going to allow any non-Deep State candidate to win another election again, since they got away with rigging and stealing the election in NOV 2020 and still control the voting systems in every swing state.

They did take out that $6 billion loan a couple of years ago that they supposedly have paid back. Plus their cruise ships were idle for over a year and then operating at below capacity for another year. And their parks have been below capacity for a year or two as well.

Disney+ content costs money as well, and those Marvel shows are not cheap.

However, their last earnings call sounded great, though that was in no small part because of comparisons to the previous year which sucked.

I think it's a satire of students, personally. Socrates makes an absurd statement about how government should run, and his students reject him. Then Socrates goes through some tortured reasoning about why it is, and the students believe him without question.

The modern version would skip out the explanation bit and have students just accepting the idiocy Socrates says without hesitation.

OTOH, If he plays kingmaker for DeSantis and he wins, he retains huge influence (if DeSantis loses, he deflects to DeSantis as "not me"). In addition to being a principle, it's also something that modern technology makes it very difficult to prevent: They can just log onto (various pirate sites) and get any textbook on any subject. They just need to know how, and want it.

Whether it is a focus of the curriculum is another matter.

I wish people had a better sense of the sheer RANGE of possibility for their children: What is possible, and to what extent their children are being crippled by a gaggle of bug eyed fanatics waging a war of political religion to turn their children into zombies of some shitty ideology or another.

In the early 20th century, it was not unusual, and expected for anyone at the upper ends of society, for you to speak/read/write several live languages and maybe one or two dead ones when you graduated HIGHSCHOOL. A few gymnasiums in Hungary in the early 20th century produced a large plurality of physicists and mathemeticians involved in America's nuclear and bomb programs, the development of computers, radical advances in mathematics and much more.

Probably no small part of it, but as contrast is the Oscars which got 15 million this year. The Oscars, the highlight of the movie business every year, is a meager remnant of what it had been when it was pulling nearly 50 million in 2000. That is in no small part because the modern movie business refuses to hide its disdain of the American public and its values.

It doesn't hurt. People with money or reputation (or both) on the line will tune in to watch it unfold in real time. There are a lot of people who just bet or build a fantasy team and then ignore it until they see the result, but this is rare. That latter is like the guy who buys scratch tickets and then just hands them back to the clerk to scan them and see if they won, without even bothering to scratch them. It happens, but it's not common.

At what point in that book series does Harry Potter spar with a god? Voldemort is never depicted as a god. It isn't even suggested! He is evil power hungry megalomaniac. That's all. And that is clearly conveyed in the books. He is not the source of all evil, again clearly conveyed. Luke Skywalker spars with an evil power hungry megalomaniac too. And your earlier point that he "doesn't pull a sword from a stone" is also silly. Luke has a sword called a light sabre, Harry has a sword of sorts also. Its called a wand.

226 I read Maus on my own back in middle school, loved it. The author was an underground comic guy kind of like Crumb, and did some subversive art. What's fascinating is that all the characters have depth. The dad that survived the Holocaust, in the modern day scenes with a grown up son, is blatantly racist to blacks (his son pointing out the hypocrisy), was a crappy father in many ways, and a crappy husband who drove his wife to suicide, and is in a bad new marriage. He didn't hero worship the dad character, ie his dad. It's a kind of naval gazing graphic novel memoir of his life but it's honest, really good way for older kids to learn about the Holocaust.

I don't think the nudity of the mice in the camps is the problem. That's what the left harps about. The second volume of the series has his self-insert cartoonist character talk about the suicide of his mom, drawn in the cartoonist character's supposed comic style, and we see his mom begging to be loved by his cold father and there are naked exposed breasts. And then we learn later she committed suicide and I think that he blames his dad for her death. That was weirdly more disturbing to me than the Holocaust scenes.

Disney moved a whole bunch of employees from California to Orlando last year. Suddenly, these progressives are living in Florida because of their jobs, and they hate the culture. They are using their overinflated clout at Disney to try and implement social change in their new homes.

I think that explains the new tenor of activism from Disney. A large number of Florida employees hate living there.

And yet, they're still vastly outnumbered by the new residents who are registering as Republican at record numbers while Democrats lose registration numbers from the past few years.

280 54 Because the community libraries are full of homeless people. That's why a lot of us don't use them any more.

When Mr. S worked the downtown branch in the city, my worry was that an enraged off their meds homeless person would stab him with a ballpoint pen or something when he removed them from their porn.

282 A few days ago, Prager was talking about a recent poll if 2,000 American dog owners on his radio show indicating that 70% literally considered their dog their best friend (tragically sad, and tragically sad commentary on society today).

"Puppy love: 7 in 10 people really do consider their dog their best friend"
studyfinds.org/dogs-best-friends

The majority celebrate their birthdays with parties; one caller said a friend had a wedding ceremony for his dog, after which the couple was to mate and "consummate the marriage" (presumably while the attendees all watched).

285 "the suggestion that Harry or Arthur or Luke Skywalker are Christ figures is ridiculous. Christ didn't defeat the bad guys on earth with determination and luck. He was a divine being who defeated death for everyone. The comparison is stupid."

"For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous."

JC did have to obey his Father ("not my will but thine be done) to accomplish the mission, but indeed he had the pure blood (only begotten son of God) to do that, even though he was tempted in all points, like as we (are so tempted).

But yeah, all the "Christ like" figures can't "save" us spiritually, but they at least emphasize the importance of obeying a higher power (but in Hollywood, it is usually a fake power). Even worse, imo, is when they make "superheroes" as the Christ figure.

We can't wait for a Hulk or Spiderman to act on our behalf, we must act despite not having those kind of superpowers. (sure, we have some super powers as Christians, but not like the comic book counterfeits). The world is deception.
