The Morning Rant: Scattered Buck Shots (3/07/2022)

Collapse of Small-Cap Stocks Is Twice As Bad As The Dow Jones Correction

If you’re watching the value of your 401K, you’ve probably noticed that it’s taken a hit recently. If it’s invested in an index fund tracking the S&P 500, it’s probably down about 10% from its peak. As of last Friday’s close, both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 are down 10% from the market top, what is known as a “correction.”

The S&P is composed (approximately) of the 500 largest companies by market capitalization, weighted according to their size. Just four stocks - Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google – account for more than 20% of the weighting in the S&P.

So how are the stocks of smaller companies doing? Not good. They are in a full-blown, price-collapse, bear market.

The Russell 2000 is an index of smaller publicly traded companies. Specifically, these are the companies ranked (approximately) 1,000 to 3,000 in market capitalization.

The Russell 2000 Index fell more than 20% from its market peak, and is currently 19% below its peak.

It has been well documented how the pandemic-era assault on Main Street businesses benefited Monster Tech, while simultaneously setting the stage for a negative economic ripple effect, due to the loss of economic activity from all the shuttered small businesses.

As the collapse of “small-cap” stocks reveals, unglamorous businesses that are the daily engine of our economy are under a lot of stress.

The Chamber of Commerce Is Irretrievably Lost

Remember how we used to mock hyper-PC campus activists? We stated that they’d have a rude awakening when they hit the real world. They didn’t. Not only have those woke activists conquered academia, media, and every other source of influence in their march through the major institutions, they have also taken over outposts such as suburban Chambers of Commerce in deep red locales.

Pulliam - Chamber of Commerce.JPG

Blount County, Tennessee (Maryville) is a conservative, suburban area outside of Knoxville. Its Chamber of Commerce is asking candidates for local office to complete a questionnaire about their positions on various issues:

The Blount County Chamber of Commerce is compiling profiles of all the candidates running for office in 2022. We ask that you complete this short questionnaire so the information can be shared with the community via social media and the website. Deadline for submission is March 11.

That would seem helpful. So, what are the questions? Here’s one:

What kinds of policies, if any, will you pursue to promote social and racial justice in our community?

The Chamber of Commerce is lost. Like the Salvation Army and other once-beneficial organizations, it has been hopelessly infected with left-wing rot. It cannot be saved.

Defund the Chamber of Commerce.

Helen Thomas Would Be Proud

You’ll never guess what journalistic beat Christiane Saddamanpour Amanpour is covering in regards to the Ukraine-Russian War.

Actually, I’m joking. You know darn well what story she’s trying to find a way to tell – “Israel and those awful Jews.”

Amanpour.JPG

If Amanpour were reporting on a pie-baking contest at a county fair, she would still find a way to make it about Israel. You know, I’m starting to think she may have a disturbing obsession with Jews. Helen Thomas would be very proud of Christiane.

Can We Tear Down The Lenin Statues Now?

Just in case you missed it, this excellent comment is from our own K.T. in her Saturday morning post “Is Putin Leaving Lenin To The West?”

With all the hostility toward things Russian lately - Russian cats, Russian salad dressing, Russian junior athletes, etc., I haven't seen any news of hostility toward statues of Lenin in the USA.

K.T.’s comment encapsulates a lot about the phoniness of the SwarmThink* we’re all seeing right now. There is a lot of public posturing about Russia, but not much renouncing of the communism that Russia inflicted on so much of the world in the 20th Century. (*SwarmThink is not an original term of mine. I’m swiping it from Walter Kirn.)

That’s all for today’s Rant. Thank you for paying a visit.

8 Willowed...

In the Iran-Iraq war we were covertly supplying aid to both sides. As was said at the time "we hope they both lose"

The amusing part is that prior to the Gulf War leftists damned Reagan for giving aid to Iran. After the Gulf War started they damned him for giving aid to Iraq, and in the intervening years have alternated which they are mad about depending on other political developments.

The Russel's fall is likely one of those things that "aren't good" by any means. I suspect some of it might be flight to safe haven in the big cap, politically-aligned stocks, which would imply that investors are seeing a lot of downside just about everywhere.

A few years ago I was living in a blue suburban shit hole.

A school girl led a jihad to get rid of plastic bags. Later I found out she was the daughter of the local Dem powerbroker (of course of course!).

Anyway, she gave the speech that seemed to have gotten the town to ban bags - arguing that whales in the Philippines were dying because we were using bags in our hamlet.

Note, said hamlet was inland and in the Eastern part of the US. How the bags got to the middle of the Pacific is an interesting question.

The CoC has one useful purpose in my experience. If you move to a new area, going to the local Chamber for a free map of the area and a business directory (most Chambers maintain a fairly comprehensive list, even with non-members, though they put a star on the non-members). In that one respect, the CoC is useful. I certainly don't take voting advice from them.

The WEF is the new communism? One of the more disconcerting aspects of this (wag the dog?) war is how quickly all MFM got on board with the talking points ... kinda like there was a plan.

Trump's talk of some sort of realignment with Russia was fought vigorously, to the point of framing him as a Russian agent. But some long thinkers seem to feel we need to get Russia/India/USA more aligned against the big threat of China. Instead they are pushing Russia into agreements with China, including perhaps, their monetary systems.

Jerome Powell just said that over time, there may be more than one world reserve currency. To me, the greatest threat is within, the "party of Davos" as Bannon says. They cancelled Trump's plans to move supply chains out of China, and we are more dependent than ever. So who pushed us into this war?

A) Putin is out for Russia--he does not give one shit about countries outside of it. Xi is out for China--ditto, Zelensky--ditto, Western European leaders including those in NATO, they do not give one shit about the US.
B) ALL Countries external to the US perpetually interfere in our internal politics and bribe our elites, take our tax dollars and industry, and try to get us involved if they are losing or fear other countries in their neighborhood. Kuwait in 1990 is a perfect example.
C) Our elites give a shit about the world and various countries for the same reason that the East Coast banking and mfg did in WWI, money and power. Some care because of familial history, country ties, and loved ones.
D) The rest of us are bombarded with emotional appeals requiring us to be for one side or the other without much interest in discerning what the overall US interest should be.

Let Euroland, Ukraine, and Russia duke it out because the US getting involved will leave us poorer, possibly getting nuked, and blamed for whatever settlement comes about.

Killing our economy, causing even more losses through drug od's and suicides, and empowering domestic tyrants by the US getting involved in this conflict means we should stay out of it.

Yes, they did a study that people have leaking meat in their bags and put produce directly in same. Especially the ones that don't want to (or can't) use a plastic produce bag. I think plastic bags are banned in SF, they're still available in the south bay - but they're a heavy sort of biodegradable thing. We get to pay 10 cents for bags if we don't bring our own.

That's how it worked in Denver last time I was there. Denver didn't ban plastic bags, they put a surcharge on it. If the store gives you one, they have to collect the five cent tax. They count the bags, multiply it by $0.05 and the total to the bill.

164 @96 - there is no world reserve currency. Hasn't been since the 70s when we removed metal value support and went fiat.

Powell knows that but also knows that most of the country believes there is (and that it's the dollar, which is fact not a reserve currency but simply a dominant currency) bc it's a justification for printing money at low interest rates. The whole thing is a house of cards.

Around 60% of total global transactions trade through the dollar, the rest through other currency baskets. So what Powell is suggesting could happen has already been going on for some time.

Our banking families actually have only a tiny percentage of their alleged wealth under management at any given time. The rest of it is full faith and credit baby.

It's almost as if - get this - they're lying to us, stealing from us, and laughing at us behind our backs. Crazy, I know ....

It is a mighty fine distinction in some respects. The USD is used as a reserve currency in most countries (though not exclusively) but it is still the settlement currency for commodities, namely oil. The petrodollar is pretty important and the games going on now in Eastern Europe is perhaps the greatest threat to that system in a long time. If China and India and Russia start settling oil without dollars and SWIFT transfers, it will probably ripple out into regional petro-currency blocs. The dollar will lose a lot of its global power if that happens.

There was an interesting article by a logistics Army officer who does conflict simulations as his dayjob. The Russian army is based on railheads and apparently the Ukrainians have destroyed those railheads first which means the Russians are forced to use trucks. The issue then is that apparently like Iraq, the Russian Army does not have enough rear guard troops like military police to guard the routes which makes those trucks vulnerable.

imo USD is THE reserve currency ... the Euro was an attempt to challenge it but that is failing. But sure, it is fiat, and they have printed so much that only the "world Reserve" status (even at 60%) means USD is strongest, and as things collapse, it is likely going to be even stronger. People will flee to the perceived security of SuperPower USA almighty dollar. (despite the actual flood of trillions being tossed around)

maybe the hemp folks can blitz ads on facebook explaining how many paper bags we could make while still saving the trees if only we'd make them out of hemp.

Everything there is corrupt to the core. And the military is no different.

223 If China and India and Russia start settling oil without dollars and SWIFT transfers, it will probably ripple out into regional petro-currency blocs. The dollar will lose a lot of its global power if that happens.

It's likely happening now.
And although I have been told how small the Russian GDP is with respect to the rest of the world, Ukraine and Russia are two of the largest commodity exporters in the world.
Commodities = cash
Commodity futures may start to crash soon, as there was a lot of financial leverage placed on commodities exported from both countries, and the actual asking price for Russian crude is now something like -$27. (negative).
China will likely be buying a lot of Russian crude (they already are...but more!), as will India, and perhaps Japan (already are, but more!). And probably not in dollars, anymore. Officially, the US is mad at India for not having sanctions against Russia. The US was talking about sanctions against India. And yes, this is all madness.

One of the intruders was promptly arrested after both fled the stolen vehicle.

The 17-year-old individual was said to be armed.

The second suspect was not found, but law enforcement officials believe that this individual fled the scene.

The incident occurred right around the same time that Kamala Harris and four other Cabinet members had landed at the base.

284 >>The west was also openly saying Ukraine would fold in a few days before the war started. I went back and checked the analysis shortly after things started.

There is still zero evidence that the Ukranians have done much of anything at all.

Besides losing the majority of their forces in the East...

This isn't anything like the wars we have watched in the last 20 years. There's no upside to Putin bombing the shit outta Ukraine. So, he hasn't.

285 Not saying that Russia will not 'win' but simply that it will not be a cost free victory for Russia and may end up a strategic if not tactical loss.

Winning is drawing new lines that Putin will accept. Thus, Russia will win. Where the line will be is in dispute at the moment.

286 Facts are stubborn things and we know about how many trucks Putin's military has and which are usable for logistic support of an army. Same as the mysterious absence of the Russian Air Force, after the initial stages. Having to adapt logistics is a fact and that it will slow matters is a fact.

308 It's possible there are those who know Moscow's plan and timeline, but they're not commenting here. Some things - like how the current Russian army has organized and trained to operate - are known. And it doesn't appear they have been operating that way.

The air aspect remains sort of puzzling, though air is not as central to Russian operations as to ours, and there's reason to think the effort to degrade Uke anti-air has not gone that well, and there are Russian air losses to show for it - so that might explain that.

Israel's approach isn't at all surprising. Russia is a player, Ukraine is not, Israel and Russia have had an ongoing practical strategic relationship for some time.

RTG, simply go to primary sources before the war contaminated it and you can see satellite info on that. The Russian airforce was active during the earliest part of the war and now is not. Same for missile strikes. So, the Russians have changed over to artillery barrages which indicates that the Russians do not care who they piss off and destroy now.

Personally, I feel for the people of Ukraine but want the US to stay out of it including involving itself in peace negotiations but I have no illusions about the Russian leaders being friends of the US nor its people. 343 whig for those of a certain 29-yr old vintage and background, it is amazing to see the open source overhead imagery and analysis now available here online to everyone.

What was top secret before is now just another tweet or website to check.

And there is a lot of info on what is going on (if we're talking crude basic military facts). There are some aggregators and analysts who are pulling some of it together. The ISW outfit in DC has nice short summaries a few times a day based on publicly known info, regarding Russian and Uke military activities and positions.

And if you graze in the Russian media there's lots of detail about attacks in Donetsk and Lugansk - which I'm guessing are completely missing in western "press" - and decent coverage of basic diplomatic aspects, along with cheerleading and amusingly propagandistic stuff (which is no worse than much of western "press" for years now, of course ...).

I think you're right. I'm wondering if Western Europe's response took him off guard, he expected nobody would have a stomach for more than token involvement and they'd have been crumbled with no resupply. The whole damn thing is weird as hell. But he clearly did have a contingency for a longer operation, though it will be MUCH messier.

Big danger, of course, is that the longer it takes, the more opportunity for something random to put everything sideways.

Talk about wishful thinking - I don't know of a single worldwide producer who isn't pumping at or near full current capacity already, with the exception of Iran; and even they don't have too much room for improvement. Places like Libya and Venezuela will take years of heavy investment before they can start to recover. All these "experts" think production is something you turn on and off like a light switch.

I don't see much of that, but more of "why did DeepState (or whomever) push so hard on the "Ukraine should join NATO" thing? It doesn't make Putin our friend, but it may mean it was not USA acting in its own interests, but the WEF types with their own agenda (21?).

Bannon talks about how they used Ukraine, walked them into this killing field, even Kamala going over and pushing for Ukraine in NATO, basically spitting in Putin's face, and breaking an earlier treaty on that issue, from what I hear.

Maybe WEF is trying to break USA, and it seems India and Israel are now more aligned with Russia, while the Junta and globalists wanted this problem to grow. The Junta wants a China/Iran alliance ... more than India/Russia/USA (and Israel, I guess)

432 SCOTUS refuses to review the reversal of Bill Cosby's sexual assault conviction by Pa. Supreme Court. Headlines say Cosby's conviction was reversed "on a technicality." LOL. Violation of one's constitutional rights is now a "technicality"? Cosby was only convicted because Pa. prosecutors promised not to criminally prosecute him, which prevented Cosby from being able to refuse to testify in the accuser's multi-million-dollar civil suit against him. After he testified in the civil suit, prosecutors reneged on their prior promise and charged him criminally. IOW, Cosby was forced to give testimony against himself, in violation of the 5th Amendment.

That's not a "technicality," that's an egregious violation of a fundamental constitutional right.

There was no stealing like the Biden junta. JQ finished second out of four tickets. None received a majority of US votes. So Congress selected him as per the 12th Amendment and the Constitution itself when no candidate gets a majority of electoral votes. Henry Clay was speaker and some believe that Clay agreed to support Adams in return for the Secretary of State job. But that is speculative. It did more or less cripple that administration from the get go though.

The 5th Amendment says "No person . . . shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself."

It doesn't say "unless the judge says it's cool, in which case it's okay."

I am not disputing your original post. I just wanted to clarify that Bruce Castor was the prosecutor who made the deal.

This all occurred locally and was being exploited for political reasons, imagine that.

The whole questionnaire is here. There are only a few questions, and they're all inane. I'm wagering composing the questionnaire was a task turned over to someone in the communications office, and this is what you get when a young communications major who knows nothing of substantive public policy is given the task.

514 Just noticed that the Chamber's questionaire can be filled out by anyone.......

I know Blount County and they really aren't into Woke. If they really provide the info to the public, this would be a good time for a good conservative statement. Blount County will love it.
