ABC Poll: Americans Have "Sharply Negative" Reaction to Biden's Vow to Discriminate On Basis of Sex and Race in Filling Supreme Court Seat
Biden's promise to appoint a black female Supreme Court Justice if he became president (or, as it turns out, " " " president " " ") was a quid pro quo for getting the endorsement of influential black congressman Jim Clyburn.
As the New York Times reported:Mr. Biden made the promise at a debate in February 2020, just days before facing his Democratic rivals in the South Carolina primary, where Black people make up a large portion of the party's voters. At the time, his campaign was struggling amid losses in two of the early presidential contests. "I'm looking forward to making sure there's a Black woman on the Supreme Court to make sure we in fact get everyone represented," Mr. Biden said that night. The promise helped Mr. Biden secure the support of Representative James Clyburn, a veteran Black Democrat from South Carolina, just days ahead of the party's contest in that state. Last year, Mr. Clyburn confirmed a report in the book "Peril," by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, that he had urged Mr. Biden to make the promise during the debate."Biden is now delivering on that gross political quid pro quo, but Americans are not happy about it. 76% want him to consider "all qualified candidates," not just black female ones.
During the spring 2020 presidential primaries, days before his set of big wins on Super Tuesday, Biden pledged to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, if elected. Now, with the chance to do so, just over three-quarters of Americans (76%) want Biden to consider "all possible nominees." Just 23% want him to automatically follow through on his history-making commitment that the White House seems keen on seeing through. Although the poll's sample size was not large enough to break out results for Black people, only a little more than 1 in 4 nonwhite Americans (28%) wish for Biden to consider only Black women for the vacancy. Democrats are more supportive of Biden's vow (46%) than Americans as a whole, but still a majority of Democrats (54%) also prefer that Biden consider all possible nominees.The poll finds low ranks for Biden in all other areas, of course.
A glaring weak spot for Biden is inflation, where 69% of Americans disapprove of his handling of this key issue.... Troublingly for the White House, only 1% of Americans view the state of the nation's economy as "excellent,"and only 23% say it's "good." Three out of four Americans said the state of the economy was "not so good / poor." Biden sees other troublesome disapproval numbers surrounding his handling of gun violence (69%), crime (64%), immigration (64%), the situation with Russia and Ukraine (56%) and the country's economic recovery (56%.) The country is split on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, with 50% approving and 49% disapproving.Democrats continue turning from him as well:
And while support from Democrats trends higher than the population as a whole, Biden's support within his own ranks is softening. In August, 91% of Democrats approved of Biden's handling of the pandemic. Now, that figure has dropped to 82%. The drop in support among Democrats around Biden's handling of the economic recovery is even clearer, from 89% in August to 73% now.

Stay hydrated. My dad got the 'Rona a couple of weeks ago (he's over it), and gave it to my mom. He had some muted taste/smell (only lasted a few days) but they both had suppressed appetites (which is also a standalone symptom of both the flu and the 'Rona). With suppressed appetite, either as its own thing or just because you can't taste anything and so don't enjoy eating, it's also really easy to just not drink enough water - and dehydration just makes everything radically worse.

I still think Biden is gone shortly after the State of the Union, which is why they're trying to get this nominee picked and pushed through soon. He'll announce the nominee at the end of February, and in late March Schumer will start hearings, while the new Harris Admin is busy replacing everyone appointed to key positions during Biden's tenure.
They don't want this as a fight because Biden is so unpopular that it's more likely to turn out opposition, and may even demoralize progressives if the admin decides to go with the "moderate dem" route.

Actually, it is whenever his replacement is confirmed. For the most part, the timeline is late June to July. Scotus decides in a big conference in September which cases to consider in the next term of the court. Plus, a new justice wants to hire law clerks, etc.
Dem and Rep Senators would be pissed to be in session in October of an election year to consider a nomination.

Justices are more explicit as Chief Justice Warren caused a controversy when his resignation letter said he would resign at the pleasure of the president who was LBJ at the time. LBJ's appointee, Abe Fortas got mired down in a financial scandal and the time ran out to replace Warren. Essentially, ballot harvesting which was perfected in CA is what did it and there is some evidence that the voter rolls are padded in those swing states. Adjudication changing ballots (which is why ballot images were illegally deleted in GA for example) and some other means such as discarding GOP mail votes also probably occurred.

I doubt they take Sodapop seriously. I've read multiple reports over the years that Kagan has a good sense of humor, has an easygoing personality, and gets along well with a wide variety of people. Pretty much she has the traits that make for an effective scotus justice because most of the job is playing nice with the other justices.

I sympathize with her on the billing hours. It's a shitty way to have to make a living, especially in those first years. She reportedly told a friend that she felt like she was losing her soul -- a not uncommon sentiment among a lot of young lawyers, usually with good reason.
But she also had a side gig on Extra. She should have quit the law firm and gone into t.v. or politics full time. Then, like Michelle Obama, it would not have mattered that she couldn't cut it as a lawyer. She could have just sold herself as a brilliant and beautiful black lawyer and counted on the media to provide cover for her, as they did for Michelle (who was neither beautiful nor brilliant, and had also failed as a lawyer).

Some partners still grind hard, but yeah, a lot of them are as you describe. And not all hours worked are billable, not all billable hours are collectible. It also doesn't take into account the partner cutting your time so they get credit for the collections and not you. So to get that 2400 billable hours as an associate, you're working 3000 hours.

I'm not trying to rationalize it, just commenting on what is being reported about the things she said prior to her death. Obviously we'll never know for sure what made her decide to end her life. I think it's very sad. She was a beautiful, bright young woman and it's a shame that she felt overwhelmed at work and "too old" for this world at just age 30.

While there's a lot of sentiment that we shouldn't care who Joey Mudbrain's pick is, I disagree. I want him to pick the worst possible race-baiting, affirmative action hire, dumb fugly skank on the list. It won't matter in terms of voting because no matter who he picks she'll vote 100% the way the left wants her to. But with a truly repulsive idiot, that has the potential to annoy even the cowardly GOP squishes on the court, who might be reluctant to join her in voting -- or at least not open to being persuaded by her to join her in voting.

That seems high, but that's actually a normal figure for all pregnancies...and is normally low b/c early miscarriages don't count - from Mayo Clinic:
"Miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. About 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. But the actual number is likely higher because many miscarriages occur very early in pregnancy..."

Many start trying to have a kid around 35, when they should be starting in their early 20s.
But...that would require a culture shift. People live long enough that your average 18 year old woman could look for a husband instead of a job. Have however many kids she wants and THEN work on her career.

Okay. So in the Pfizer document they don't use "miscarriage" (I used that word, apparently inappropriately), they use "spontaneous abortion" which may not be the same thing. But the "likely higher because many occur very early in pregnancy" (with the implication that the woman who had the miscarriage may not have known she was pregnant) wouldn't be a factor in this data, I don't think, since in that case any side effects would have been in the non-pregnant data rather than the "pregnant woman" data. I didn't see anything in the Pfizer data about term length until negative effect, so that would bear looking into if it's in there (I haven't seen it yet).

Spontaneous abortion is the terminology for pregnancy losses before week 20. So, it, by definition, is the miscarriage definition and rates.
And my number from Mayo does not count those early people. The normal percent is 10-20% of KNOWN pregnancies end in miscarriage every year.
