19 About solar panels from the previous thread:

"And, IIRC, panel efficiency degrades with time even with maintenance.
Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar"

I noticed last summer my shop solar system performance was a about 50% of what it used to be so I went on the roof to check it out. 16 panels, some as much as 10 years old. Half of the panels had some issue. I was able to fix most but had to toss three. In any case there is also the maintenance issue and failure rate to consider in the cost.

22 I put ridge vents on attic to keep cool and bought a remote thermometer set so I can see the outside temp and the attic temp and see if the vents are adequate. Then realized I can put the thermometers in someones house and show them how hot the attic gets and conducts heat into house.. BIL's house gets to 147 in attic barely 90 outside. They don't realize what effect that has, attic doesn't even cool down overnight. Thermometer set to be delivered today just as roof gets finished

23 Good morning hordelings. I wasn't here much yesterday so my apologies if this was already discussed.

Yesterday a hearing was held to determine what to do with Kyle Rittenhouse's rifle, as well as to determine who gets his bail money back. The rifle was ordered to be destroyed, as Kyle wanted. The 2 million dollar bail money got split among the defense attorneys and also FightBackFreedom, or whatever Lin Woods' thing is called. A carve out of $150,000 was paid back to actor Ricky Schroder, who contributed that amount to Kyle's bail.

34 Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat soldiers on. Well, in truth he sleeps on, on his pet bed, and trundles back and froth between it and the kitchen and litter box. Now and then he sprawls out on the floor, looking at me, and I know that means, "Come pet me."

Today I have to run out and renew his Rx for prednisolone. That's the liquid anti-inflammatory we give him by mouth each evening, and which he hates. But one night he threw it up and I couldn't get a new dose into him, and the next day he was even more lethargic than usual. The stuff is doing *something* for him, I'm not sure what.

Anyway: 38 degrees here, which I'm sure makes the locals think the world is freezing over. I saw a neighbor walking her dog in a blouse and jeans, no coat or cap. Jeez, lady, no wonder you're cold. Put on a jacket.

37 "They don't realize what effect that has, attic doesn't even cool down overnight. Thermometer set to be delivered today just as roof gets finished"

I went through this many years ago at the old house.

You don't perchance have one of those hand held infra red thermometers?
The most impressive thing is to shoot the ceiling temps in the summer BEFORE any attic and roof modifications.

Then after mods are complete, reshoot the temps on a day of similar outside characteristics, sun, wind, outdoor temp, etc.

Ours had a ceiling temp of at least 8 degrees over ambient room temp when we began.
Afterward...less than two degrees.
That is huge reduction in thermal energy being emitted into the house.

When I had mine done my doctor told me to take that sling off as much as I could tolerate at home and I did. It hurt taking the thing on and of,f but each time it got easier on me. That was the direct opposite of what my wife's doctor told her when she had hers done. He would not let her out of that sling for 6 weeks except to shower. She was in so much pain I had to help her with the sling every time.

I was out of physical therapy in 8 weeks, she was still going at it into week 12.

60 Netflix is as bad as commercials. Worse, actually.

POCs in every smart role, whites are dumb or criminal or both. All the detectives are women.

Just like the real world, right?

What is it now, $14 monthly? You pay every month, the catalog of shit sucks, everything is woke, but once a year they give you something like maybe a Fargo, or an Ozark, and you've paid $200 to watch ten episodes of OK content.

I have a quiet day, although I need to see how I can do my walk with the touch of snow on the ground.

The oldest has a public vocal choral concert, so that's the big event (it's her 1st not directly on University or Church grounds, but at one of those places that instantly impresses folks not in the arts). I'm not going b/c I get to feed and watch the other 3, but this is a big deal for the oldest, so dad will brave the trip to the city and the 3 hour wait before the show (since call time is 3 hours early). I'll try to catch it on streaming, I think.

69 If anyone needs something to watch - Hulu has Britain's "Best Home Cook" with Mary Berry...and it also has "The Hardy Boys" 2020 edition which is weirdly set back in time about 4 decades, so also seems way more "wholesome" even if it is about a murderous plot, than it has any right to be.

Not saying these are exciting tv, but they are pleasant diversions...and I read every Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys book ever made as a kid (from their beginnings onward), so I see those series and always want to give them a try (I've finished episode 4, so I can't promise it doesn't become a disaster, but it hasn't yet).

76 The BBC is laying the groundwork to discredit and deplatform Dr Campbell for the high crime of using official government statistics to disprove the MSM scare campaign.

The BBC published a "Reality Check" on Dr Campbell where they say the video he made, which walked through the UK government statistics on COVID deaths, that say plainly, in the statistics, that only 17,000 died in the UK from covid alone between 2019-2021. In addition, there were only 127,000 excess deaths above the 5 year average.

The BBC says that he "suggests deaths were lower than the msm intimates" and by doing this he is trivializing the deaths of our loved ones.

Now the attack dogs can use this as the base for their own fact checks and blast it to google and fb, demanding his removal.

And that the post-op pain with a shoulder is, shall we say, exquisite!

Yes; he purrs while being petted, and while he likes sleeping in the bedroom, he does spend time out where we are. If this is really his new normal, I guess that's the way it is. As long as he eats happily and likes our attention, I think he's doing fairly well.

concur. move the arm around. bend over and let you body sway into pendalum swings. get a rope, pulley and make handles so you can use the good arm to pull the weak arm through its range of motion.

mine was really bad. took me two years to get 80% of my right arm back. VA has me for 30% just on that alone.

87 Willowed but somebody brought the question back up.

Very rough figures:

Peak solar isolation with everything optimized is a bit above 1 kW/sq. m

In Georgia, due to the weather and panel orientation you get about 4 to 4.5 hours a day average of your peak output so if you have a 2 kW array you get about 8 to 9 kW/hrs a day average. On the average a house in Georgia uses 36 kW/hr a day.

Another issue is costs and without tax incentives all on-the-grid green energy is a life cycle loser.

I think part of the reason can't release the total death numbers for 2020 and 2021 - even though they are the most documented numbers in the history of numbers - is because they show death rates went down.

92 Yeah this is an ongoing thing with this house since 2004 when we bought it , realized really quick attic was lethally hot and put in a 3 by 3 ft cupola and some vents on garage. big difference.. got a infra red several years ago. original roof had roof ridge vents that didnt let much air through and plugged with dust but had a 4" slot cut on peak of roof that should have done it. Put in cobra vents by GAF that should be much better , cupola was showing its age but really worked well. Also added a bunch of soffit vents these are just as important to have, could still add some more. Could be a real eye opener for locals, how hot it gets in and attic here with zero or minimal vents.MIL house has no vents period.
Went by BIL house one time near Christmas he was in attic getting decorations down 70 degrees out but sweating bullets in attic, 4 mushroom vents totally inadequate.

The sad part is he needs another go round on the left due to injuring it after the original rotator cuff surgery. This one may be a reverse replacement. We both need to wait awhile on that one until the pain and aggravation of this one subside.

176 On the physical therapy front, ever since my heart surgery I've had, for whatever reason, balance problems that progressively got worse. When I was first released I would still walk Teddy although fatigue was a problem; but started being plagued by back pains as well making walking him a big problem. I was referred to a PT who has made some progress but I still need a cane to walk and NFW is going out in the snow and ice a good idea. The burden of just about everything has fallen on my wife and in no way is that a guilt free way to be. I'm scheduled to see a neurologist so who knows what that will produce.

Ever since I went under the knife my life has turned to shit and I'm very pissed off about that.

182 94 The old school Magnum had a point, a universe using today's terms. They were Vietnam vets dealing with things. I liked Simon and Simon. It was another good show that dealt with Vietnam vet issues. Looking back, Magnum was under appreciated imo.

I was reading one time about Magnum PI that it was probably the first (TV or movie) show that didn't treat Vietnam Vets as damaged victims who were drug addicts. They were normal guys who came back and got on with living.

183 I enjoyed Friends and Big Bang Theory. They were a simpler time in sitcoms without pandering and woke. The one difference was Maylim Bialik having to kiss up in BBT after the mob of feminists tried to cancel her after a remark she made, that was during it's last season. Not as good as News Radio, Frazier or Cheers but acceptable. Now, I watch zero tv. Tried to watch Yellowstone but gave up. If there is a redeeming human portrayed in it I missed that person. I enjoy college football and watch it.

You mean electrical or whirly things?
Dunno, but if you aren't getting enough air pulled in, you can't exhaust. Soffit vents are easy to install, but oftentimes the insulators blow the stuff all the way to the edge. Vents ain't gonna help unless you pull that back. They make cheap dams for that.

188 I'm having trouble watching anything right now... rewatching Upstairs Downstairs, North and South on dvd, and even Downton Abbey again. I have tons of DVDs with 70's sitcoms on them, but now they all seem like an unbearably poignant look into the old America I can still remember. And can't stand anything contemporary, except Inspector Lewis. So I have to stick with shows and movies set before I was born.

Vents tend to be passive, and require no energy.
Roof fan requires power.

But neither or them will work well without a path for air to enter the attic space, preferably near or at the base of the roof.
You want almost a rising curtain of air to flow under the interior of the roof, sweeping the hotter air out at the peak.

201 Another issue is costs and without tax incentives all on-the-grid green energy is a life cycle loser.

About the only real value of solar in an area that can easily get utility generations, is to charge the BEV. Its sort of like the wind powered water pumps in the mid west, the wind doesn't have to blow constantly, just enough to keep the horse trough and cisterns with something.

Of course, one would never get the raw value out of a solar -> BEV setup, the value comes in the form of removing as much government between you and your transportation short of walking a riding a bicycle.

The government is actively destroying the petroleum market to inhibit life as we know it. By moving to Electric Only, they can turn your life off at the touch of a switch, not when your fuel tanks run dry. With Solar -> BEV, at least you have another degree or two of autonomy and less dependence on an increasingly hostile government.

Well, the six major actors were all much younger than he was, and had been working closely together at that point for almost 2 years. They had formed a club of their own. Still not pleasant to read about, but it's explicable.

That long story arc with Selleck playing the older lover of Monica, and the concurrent storyline of Ross and Rachel becoming lovers as well, was the peak storytelling of the show.

I feel like now people are led (by docs!) to believe that surgery is this easy panacea. No, it's still invasive even with modern tech. Of course there are situations where it is necessary, but the real risks are seemingly underplayed now.

The newer IBC addresses issues like that. But there are a whole lotta houses that aren't up to current code. There is a fix for that, and it would reduce the airflow from your bedroom (which it sounds like you need).
Add a return somewhere, if at all possible (and it's always possible, sometimes just not practicable).

I'd probably be dead now without it as a leaky aortic valve just dragged me down. And immediately post surgery I felt great. But staying in the hospital for a month hooked up to an IV definitely fucked me up. My balance has been screwed and not being able to climb stairs, for example, didn't help. Plus having arrhythmia wasn't pleasant.

In retrospect I should've pushed myself harder that's after the fact guesswork. Having balance issues and feeling lightheaded is no fun.

Amazon's music services have gotten worse and worse and worse. The phone app has gotten (deliberately, IMO) worse, with less functionality than prior versions. At every step, Amazon makes it more difficult for you to play your own music -- while pushing you to their "unlimited" music subscription service. Helpful Hint - crack a window. Install a vent. You'll be fine.

It turns out - get this - the entire world is one big air pressure pump. 14.7 PSI, just waiting to push into your house and say "Hello". And you can crack that window just a teeny tiny bit. Still - 14.7 PSI - just regulating your internal pressure 24/7/365.

Crack a window across from that first window - and you now have a magical thing we call "ventilation".
