Spotify to Neil Young: We Accept Your Conditions. We Are Removing Your Shitty Music From Our Service.

Neil Young, greatly, greatly overestimating his relevance and clout, demanded that Spotify either drop Joe Rogan or drop him.

Spotify thought about this for five minutes -- four minutes and fifty six seconds were taken up trying to figure out who Neil Young was (He's not an astronaut, is he?) -- and then decided, "Uh, yeah. Okay, bye-bye then."

Screenshot (1360).png

This crochety old relic goes into the remainder bin of history.

Spotify Technology SA is removing Neil Young's music, as the folk-rock star isn't wavering in his objections to Joe Rogan's podcast.

The "Heart of Gold" and "Harvest Moon" singer earlier this week penned an open letter to his manager and label asking them to remove his music from the service, saying it is spreading fake information about Covid-19 vaccines through Mr. Rogan's show. "They can have Rogan or Young. Not both," he wrote.

"We want all the world's music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators," a Spotify spokesman said. The company has detailed content policies in place and has removed over 20,000 Covid-related podcast episodes since the start of the pandemic, he added.

"We regret Neil's decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon," he said.

...

While the letter has since been removed from Mr. Young's website, he has been in discussions with his label, Warner Music WMG -0.20% Group Corp.'s Warner Records, and Spotify since then, and continued to hold his ground, according to people familiar with the matter. The formal request to remove the music was made Wednesday and could take several hours to take effect across Spotify's service across the world.

Screenshot (1361).png

Is that true, that he no longer owns his songbook? If so, then he wouldn't have control over the licensure of his music.

Is Spotify removing his music to spare itself the headache, then? Or out of spite?

Note that that last possibility is not out of the question: they have a strong business incentive in laying down the law as far as artists making demands like this. Imagine all of these prima donna, leftwing opinion-shrieking Artistes all making demands like this. Or rappers saying "Drop my rivals' music or drop me!"

No -- best to lay down the law with a has-been like Neil Young and let the rest know, "We're not playing, we'll drop you like a bad habit."

I'd like to associate myself with the below tweet:

Screenshot (1329).png

Agreed. I'm not a huge fan of Rogan. I don't listen to him much, even when he has on someone I'd like to hear from. I just don't really love his presentation or his vibe.

I don't really share a lot of his obsessions, like psychoreligious tripping on DMT.

But...

That said, I have enjoyed hearing him in the past, and what I do appreciate is his openness. No matter how flakey or absurd the topic -- UFOs, Bigfoot, seeing your past selves on an ayahuasca dream quest, cold therapy, whatever -- he's just curious, and willing to suspend judgement and disbelief (if he has any, not sure if he does!) and go along with it and ask questions about it and elicit information.

Some of that information may be interesting or useful.

Some topics I don't really care all that much about, but I'm happy to hear about them any way. For example, he talks about drugs and controlled supplements like HGH a lot. I don't take illegal drugs or HGH but I like hearing these conversations. You know why?

Because, frankly, I'm sick to death of everything being so controlled. Oh, you're not supposed to do LSD, so you, as an adult, are not allowed to hear this quack extolling the benefits of LSD, for fear you'll get Wrong Ideas.

The medical community advises against HGH except for certain narrowly defined cases so you, as an adult, are not allowed to hear about the positive uses of HGH for fear that, oh my gosh, you'll contact a Mexican pharmacy and get HGH on your own and take it without a doctor's permission.

I am now an adult very close to turning 29 and yet I get an incredibly giddy feeling about getting to feel like an adult and hear about forbidden topics, just like adults used to do, routinely.

I am sick to death of being fucking nannied to death by

IDIOTS

CRIMINALS

CHARLATANS

GRIFTERS

THIEVES

PERVERTS

MIND-CONTROLERS

AND MENTALLY-ILL TECH WEIRDOES SEEKING VENGEANCE ON NORMIES

about what it is they think, exactly, that I as a quite able-minded and rational adult am allowed to know and think about and decide for myself.

Vaccine skepticism? Oh horrors, no. Not people hearing some things I disagree with about a recent medical invention with a short record. Oh no oh no oh no, we'd better shut this down or else some other adults, who apparently I'm responsible for patrolling the minds of, might become Misinformed.

What. The Fuck. Is Happening?!?!

Anyway, although I do not really love Joe Rogan, I do love his openness, and I have learned from it. I've personally learned that I like being a bit more open-minded, a bit more willing to say "Oh cool, tell me more about that" than to judgmentally, close-mindedly say "That's stupid and wrong, I don't want to hear about that dumb thing."

I think it's often better to err on the side of silliness and foolishness than rigidness and (often false) certitude.

And I do love that he's doing good work in forcing the tiny, cramped space of What We Are Allowed to Hear and Say, Read and Write a little bit more open.

So I support him, gladly, though I don't listen to him much.

And I'll always champion him over nasty, bitter old authoritarian Feds and Censors like Neil Young.

And by the way, I did do cold therapy. As discussed on Joe Rogan by Rhonda Patrick.

I have no idea if it did anything. I have no real idea what it was supposed to do.

It was cold. They weren't lying about that.

Interviews were always *supposed* to be about digging into *something*, exposing *some* kind of truth, even if it was just about seeing another side to someone's personality. The sating of that curiosity is what made them a thing in the first place.

Thanks to I'm guessing fag Stewart's The Daily Show, now ALL "interviews" are just theatrical owning of the conservatards and futile attempts to validate the tiny brittle brainstems of the marxist jagoffs at home.

In that age group, Rogan is pretty popular. Neil Young, not so much.
Rogan is not a brilliant guy, but sometimes he asks basic questions, like an average guy would, because he wants his guest to reveal just what they are talking about, and not start on page 104 of "inside baseball" information.

Tamika makes a good and valid point.

You know what else people want?
The "podcast" format of interview.

The days of short-segmented commercial television is OVER.

People want very long shows, with the option to Chat about it with other viewers, with no advertisers interrupting every 5 minutes.

98 The American Legions Feb magazine is pretty woke. Has an article on a black Nascar truck series driver which pretty much confirms that Nascar is trying to replace its redneck fans with a more urban selection.

But the issue ends with an article that details the shittiness of the soviet union and warns that the ChiComs have the same soviet desires but we are not doing enough to prepare for a confrontation.

But I bet the "national conversation" has been controlled for a long, long time before that.

121 Being open minded and exploring different points of view is the process of finding truth. It is the basic, necessary course for intellectual free thought. It is also part of the human experience. Evaluate or enjoy points of view. Determine their efficacy, authenticity or fallacy.

Liberals don't like where the scrutiny of their ideas leads, so they censor, subvert and cut off debate. They've done this in "education", science, on the internet and in public discourse. That's because almost all their ideas are dishonest failures, and demonstrably so if people hear the truth. It's the sine qua non of authoritarians and petty dictators, and people are starting to figure that out.

I'm just not really usually up to spend a solid 3 hours watching 2-3 guys sitting at a table talking. And if I'm doing creative work - I listen to music.

AFAIK Young sold half of his portfolio, but it could be a lot more at this point. I was also unaware that he married Daryl Hannah, and a lot of his fans are accusing her of elder abuse. I could see her dragging him around by his dick pretty easily if she's still got the looks.

I feel the same way about Rogan. I never liked his stuff, either. I think most of his guests are fruitcakes with fruitcake beliefs. But I completely support his right to be as big a fruitcake as he can be, especially if it makes him money. Beats him living off my tax dollars like the rest of the useless shitbags out there.

Ever since Rogan came down on the wrong side of Covid, he's been roasted by his formal birds with left-wing feathers. I'm curious to see how long he trends right after his recent reality-mugging.

159 Honestly, the gatekeepers were supposed to protect people from themselves, because not everyone has the time, inclination or even the intelligence to sort through information and make an informed decision.

Unfortunately, the gatekeepers, which I define as doctors, military, FBI, etc., are so completely politicized and untrustworthy, we, as a community, are far better off without them.

Trust in institutions, most likely, is irrevocably broken, hence the distrust to outright discarding of our institutional gatekeepers.

Thing is there are Boomers who measure their lives around music. Often when some rocker bites the dust you'll will hear them lament the sound track of their life is gone. (See ONT comments when some singer croaks).

There are other Boomers who could careless about what some rocker did or if they died. Yeah, some songs were nice but they don't give shit. It's the same approach to famous actors or sportsball player. A big, whatever.

178 I've watched Rogan do a few interviews. Don't know that much about him, but I do appreciate the fact that he basically shuts up and lets his interview subjects talk. I don't really want to hear from Rogan, I want to hear from the person he's interviewing. He lets them talk, and at length. The t.v. news shows usually only give people a couple of minutes' air time, and most of that time it taken up by the host trying to impress viewers with how smart they are, or trying to argue with the interview subject, or talking over him or her. It's annoying and a waste of time to watch them.

179 When Neil was in electric guitar mode, decades ago, he did some great things. His old stuff like Cortez The Killer or Down By The River still sounds great. That's some of my favorite guitar playing, right up with Billy Gibbons and Brian Setzer. But Neil did a LOT of crap right along too, and he lost it some time in the late 90s. Had a long run, though.

Yeah, except that when he said Trump couldn't play "Rockin' In The Free World" he kept playing it until he decided it sucked donkey dicks. I'd think anybody buying any of his portfolio would have told him to shove it, since he is such a loose cannon. That would just be a straight up bad investment. I guess we'll be finding out soon enough. Although the $37/month they get from spotify from the 82 people that listen to him might not be worth the court fees.

Agree, unless they've recently changed (even more). AFAIK, most artists go there for exposure - which makes more sense than trying to monetize it. I don't do Spotify (they can fuck themselves) but do subscribe to Tidal. And also check Bandcamp at least once a week. Having access to "free" music has actually gotten me to purchase a lot more than I did when I could only do 20 second samples or simply guess. It's also helped me avoid a lot of dogs. I prefer supporting artists if I like them, and having physical media guarantees the Karens won't hamper my fun.

Posted by: Ordinary American at January 26, 2022 07:01 PM (H8QX

Well, the whole point of his show was to crown the winner for whom "fear was not a factor for you". I mean Fear Factor and what he does now gels pretty well, b/c he's not afraid to talk about anything.

That said, like Ace, I don't listen to him, but that's b/c I don't listen to anyone's podcasts...they aren't my thing...

372 I think there's a lot of people who hear a couple episodes of Rogan and think they have him "pegged", but he's really just all over the map. Some episodes are him and a handful of fellow comics doing giant bong rips and sounding like jackasses for three hours. Others are deep, substantive, probing interviews with serious guests. Others are hatchet jobs with a guest who's so far up their own ass that there can't even be a decent conversation with them. It's really down to who the guest is what show you're gonna get, which I think is in the guy's favor. He has an ego that's managed well enough that his show doesn't have to be about him every single minute of every day.

All of that is mostly pointless background noise though. Nobody gleans much of anything useful from a long-form interview or podcast or training video or literally anything else while they're primarily engaged in doing something else.

I listen to talk radio most of the workday which I enjoy, but I'm constantly engaged doing other tasks so I don't have any expectation of real learning from talk radio. I feel like I'm doing everyone a disservice by trying to listen to a long-form podcast without devoting a significant amount of attention to it.

It's less about the liability insurance, and more about the annual fee they want for the privilege of having to pay for liability insurance and living in their third world paradise.

"The annual fee will amount to roughly $25 and affect around 50,000 households, according to city data.

The money will help fund city programs, including mental health, suicide prevention, domestic violence prevention and gun safety."

430 In my experience, Rogan does have a few topics where he is outright skeptical. He had a vegetarian MMA fighter on and basically challenged him non-stop on the position that you can build enough muscle mass through vegetables to compete at an elite level.

But here's the thing: Rogan was polite and he listened to his guest's arguments. Rogan still wasn't convinced. I know this because he invited that dude back months later to moderate a discussion between a sports nutritionist and this dude. He asked questions of both and basically made sure that he had someone who could speak nutrition back at this vegetarian & his ideas.

In the end, I think it boiled down to Rogan saying "Your ideas seemed to have worked for you. Maybe others like you. But your book's claims of this being appropriate for everyone is too much."

I stopped listening to Rogan because I couldn't listen to him at work and I couldn't keep up with a 3 hour podcast with only a 2 hour commute time.

438 Anyway, although I do not really love Joe Rogan, I do love his openness, and I have learned from it.

Everyone should hear more about the wonders of Communism. The Death, the Destruction and Degradation of human life. 25 million for good old Joe, 50-100 million for Mao, 2 million for Pol Pot, and how many for Fidel and Chavez?

441 They claim you don't get as sick if you got vaxxed. WTF does that mean anyway. You puke 4 times and not 5? A meaningless claim. Snake oil.

Back when Trump was in charge they were aghast that anything could be done in less than 5 years. Now they seem to know every flavor of Covid instantly, know how far it extends before any data could be examined and know just what treatments should be banned to mitigate the effects. One of these times they were lying, so I dismiss liars forever. Saves time.

445 It think it was in his book HMS Ulysses (1955) that Alistair MacLean penned the line "Name any form of human activity and I'll find you a group of doctors against it."

446 Neil was the guy that brought us the song about the peaceful Aztecs. Never mind that the first bodies rolling down the temple steps would be useless libtards like him. Only good for screaming in agony in the joyous world of Aztecland. The same dickhead that bought his doxy's haus in the Malibu hills and blamed Trump and Global Warming when it burned down... In a chaparral ecosystem that is adapted to burn every 5 years; and has been since the last ice age. Yeah Neil, ignore Nature; she sure as f***k won't ignore you. How about telling us how you dumped your exes with deformed children? Maybe having type 1 diabetes, epilepsy and drug use should have been a flag warning about parenthood? Like at least consult a doctor before procreating with the waitress down the road.
