  • You can't get there from here. (Hacker news)

Try to log in to Gmail from a device or browser they don't recognise, and it will tell you to try again from one that they do. Got a security code? Tough shit, you're not getting in.

Now, if you have a device they recognise, the way it works isn't bad at all - it will pop up an alert on the other device and say "is that you?" and you just press the button and you're in.

If you don't, though, you're kind of screwed.

In the comments, people complaining about Apple, Facebook, and Amazon pulling the same crap.

  • Medium was a promising, um, medium. Then it turned to shit. (etcetera)

I mean legitimately worse than Twitter, which is a pretty impressive achievement. Not because of the content, but because of the platform.

  • What are NFTs, how do they work, and why do they suck? (Absolucy)
The ultimate goal of NFTs is kind of awful when you look at it - people want to reintroduce scarcity to the internet, a landscape where scarcity doesn't really exist.
Yes. Well, mostly yes. NFTs have valid purposes, but for those purposes there is no artificial scarcity.

  • Businesses are banking on cryptocurrency. But there are two big challenges ahead. (ZDNet)

    1. Cryptocurrencies suck.
    2. Governments suck.

Though #2 is hardly a new discovery.

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat suddenly does not like the canned Rx food he's been gulping for several months. We do not have 500,000 to commit. Our logistics are set up for about 50,000 more. The rest would have no resupply. And the NATO forces do not have resupply either, as their ammo buys are very low. They could not handle Libya without substantial help.

In addition, shifting lots of forces to the Baltic, or even Romania, would uncover what little we have to deter a Taiwanese invasion.

Let me go ahead and introduce you to a button that will magically get activated and prevent you from getting messages and phone calls, and it will be worth getting in the habit of checking to make sure it's not clicked every few hours or so.

Go to the absolute top of your screen and "pull" down. You should see a button in the group labeled "do not disturb." That's the one.

Not a horrible phone overall and the best value conscious choice for smartphones. I've used that exact one for a year or two.

Also go right now and order a glass screen protector and a $10 case with an edge that sticks up a bit above the plane of the screen.

93 I'm still laughing at Gov Newsome putting on a show of picking up boxes along the RR track in LA. When the TV crew started, he was handed a plastic bag and walked along the track like he was going to help cleanup. It was deferentially beneath him to do that, so as soon as the TV crew left, he was in his official SUV of gone forever. What a showman.

97 That was a very close vote in Austria for mandatory vaccines. They've already been having a lot of protests. They will increase.

98 Mandatory military service? In 2022 ?

No way, no how. Uh-uh. Trust Me. They have to massage everything and run it through the fake news media as it is, bit a Draft would be some quality entertainment right there.

They have to fork out lots of cash right now to get people to enlist. They shit in their messkit with that A-stan thing too. And the Iraq thing, and the Viet Nam thing, etc.

And then purged a lot of good people to put in politically reliables. It took me a while to figure out, but some of the leftist discain of the military isn't simply they are crazy or whatever.

They know the gubbmint is run by leftists and can't be trusted, the congress is "leaky" and filled with 5th columnists. Any military operation is compromised before it starts

>>Morning all. Fuck this miserable excuse of a human being that sits in the White House. The fuckwad is considering sending thousands of troops to the Baltics.

Well, the Junta needs some way to offload the devastation it's created, what better way to draw the GOP into their psychodrama than a pointless war.

The GOP/MIC jocksniffer/War Monger class lives for this shit.

I fully expect a bunch of joint statements from the usual suspects in the coming weeks.

104 The draft was never a good call . I understand the theory, like making America like 1944. But our issues are far worse. When half the country hates it, no draft will fix it. The problems run deeper than that Conservatives are to blame ares well. They gave up virtually and literally everything. The only reason we have a chance is that the Left is that bad. I say screw the draft. Even the idea insults the vast majority that want to serve. My view is most would not consider it. That is to their shame, not honor.

The Navy is moving it's annual NATO exercise from the Atlantic to the Med. They claim it has nothing to do with the Russia/Ukraine situation though.

=====

Cousin enlisted in Army and was trained to a remarkable degree (genius-type) and he was always proud of his service. I was just at his gravesite and he does not have his service medallion on the back of his headstone. Neither does my dad (former Legion Commander), which seems absolutely silly.

Sisters and surviving cousins got an earful.

114 That thread talking about Google customer service has someone saying they're reluctant to think there is any sort of internal conspiracy there to mess with customers/users they don't like...

But no, there is, simply because employees lack the required oversight. A massive chunk of the company is awful Indian workers, and I'm not going to beat around the bush - literally thousands of them are vindictive and dishonest, and massively lazy in regards to their work responsibilities. And there is very little stopping them from acting on their bad attitude towards specific users.

And then on our side of the pond the same lack of accountability leads to a shocking amount of casual monkey-wrenching against users that employees have ID'ed as being political opponents.
