Weekend Hobby and Bodging Thread

modelcartoon.jpg

Hey, kids. Hope your weekend so far is going well. It's time once again to head for your garage, basement, spare room or other studio space and get creative! As always please use all power tools or hazardous materials with respect and caution. Walk away from a cut or operation that doesn't feel right and figure out an alternate way to do it. And always wear proper eye, ear and lung protection.

First up, I am already planning my new garage wood shop and have been leaning towards either the DeWalt or Skil 10" job site/contractor saws and integrating it into a workbench/outfeed table. Of all the designs that are on YouTube, I really like the construction and layout of this one. That said, I'd never glue down the top or bottom as this fellow did because of wood movement as well as replacing the top if it gets too beat up.

This gentleman up in British Columbia is an outstanding model railroader and fine artist. I believe he worked in film as a special effects model maker. Anyway, his current layout features a car float with extensive waterways, and his method to create them without using epoxy resin looks like a great alternative. Scroll through his other videos for other great model railroad constrcution and design tutorials.

Jeff Reiten is an incredibly talented modeler, and here he shows you how to create chipped and cracked paint effects using AK Interactive pencils. Another channel you should bookmark if you're into dioramas or model railways. His videography and editing are also beautifully done.

Now that you have a workbench, how about this cool modern coffee table? These guys are really talented. Not a big fan of epoxy tables (which they have done quite a few of) but they're masters of bent wood laminations.

Sewing is a skill that I wish I took up. Before my dad became an art teacher he worked as a textile designer and he knew his way around both a loom as well as a sewing machine. I had my chances. Oh well. Here's a tutorial on how to make patterns from your favorite items so you can recreate them.

Step by step in building a RC P-40 Warhwawk, mostly out of EPS foam. I'm a stick-and-tissue man, myself, but there are some great techniques here.

Artist and instructor Ian Roberts with some good insights in how to paint "alla prima." Lots of other good videos on painting techniques that artists will find interesting. Very knowledgeable guy.

Lastly, a really nice diorama depicting the Daily Bugle from the world of Spiderman made out of the most basic materials like cardboard, wood and air-dry-clay.

Have fun and enjoy!

On the table saw front: As part of our move from Austin to east TX I'm looking forward to, hopefully, either a three car garage and/or eventually an actual work shop.

I've started to think that I might really prefer a track saw to a table saw. I haven't used one yet but for large cuts the idea of moving the saw rather than the work makes a lot of sense both in terms of space and in maneuvering the work--it takes away the need for the kind of setup being built in that video. And that guy's table, as nice as it is, wouldn't really work on full size sheets very well, and wouldn't hold them square etc.

79 My only project at the moment is getting a pipe stem to fit properly. I bought a very nice French estate pipe last year, and it's a good smoker. But the stem, the part you actually put into your mouth, is of horn. Usually that is no trouble. But this one is very tight. I have to put a dish towel around the stem and use a pair of pliers (!) to get it turning properly for removal and cleaning.

I'm sanding the tenon, the small cylinder that actually inserts into the briar wood, w/ 800 grit sandpaper, first wet and then dry. An hour's work last night got it feeling even smoother and willing to slide into the pipe with less trouble at first. It still is tight. Perhaps another couple of sessions will do it.

You can't use a power tool on this sort of thing, even if I had one. If you take off too much material, you're out of luck. A loose stem is worse than a tight one.

Beautiful car, and a lot of the dash layout reminds me of my father's '66 Chevy Impala Super Sport. But -- this Pontiac has no air conditioning???? I know that was a relatively expensive option then. But a car like this would never have sold in Da Swamp even then without A/C.

101 Last week I got back into working on Warhammer 40k Chaos Marine force. I use a hodgepodge of figures and play only the one true edition (2nd).

For Chaos and Orks like to do pure kit-bashing rather than buy formal kits. For the better part of a decade (at least) I've had a 1/35 Merkava kit that I bought to be a super-heavy tank but then decided to use it for something else. Finally, I bit the bullet and sawed the lower hull in half. This will become the upper hull of a Chaos Rhino.

108 I've been restoring my 1960 VW Westfalia for nearly a year. Camper interior, bodywork and paint including the chassis. Have the engine out to paint engine bay, took the doghouse and engine tin apart to paint this weekend. Had to heat garage to do it, as we had a snowstorm last night with temps down to 16 tonight, which is very unusual for coastal NC. It's a subhatch Westy, has a metal sunroof that flips open. I can pretend to be a U-Boat captain. This is about as arty as I get.

Never try and figure out how much you spent/spend on your hobby.

"Sorry to say it is true. He slipped and didn't survive a fall. We looked and looked and didn't find a death notice or Obit. A member got a hold of his wife. Copy of his reply: I'm of course very saddened to confirm the passing of my friend, Mr. Red Seewun. I had to verify with his significant other, "Resident Evil". He DID NOT die from anything "Covid". He slipped and fell right before Thanksgiving last year, and he had absolutely NO contacts on his phone, or she would have called/text. Anyway, his head bounced against a concrete wall, and floor and that was it. I'm grateful that he went quickly and without suffering. If you are as I am, maybe say a quick prayer to God thanking him for giving us Red, for the time we had with us."

In the before-times of the never-never-wuflu, I went to Historicon and the same year to Fall-In. [2005??]

I've got 1/300 Heroics & Ros Marlburians that'll be set up for the Volley & Bayonet grand tactical rules. I've got some SYW ones too but not nearly as many because the equipment looks too much of a PITA to paint that I intend using for a boardgame that has about 1" hexes.

I had a painted Nap 1809+ Austrian Corps; unpainted blue-primed Duchy of Warsaw troops I sold to a Polish guy who joined the group; and a partially-painted Corps that I called the Corps of the North with a Russian, Swedish, and Prussian 1813+ Divisions but I sold it to another guy in the group too. I eventually left the group, selling the Austrians to the GM but keeping the 1809 Brunswick Black Horde brigade for sentimental reasons.

No moderns but I do have the old WRG 1950-1985 rules!

171 I am already planning my new garage wood shop

One of the few nice things about our house is the extra-deep garage. Not only can we fit my small car in it, but a storage room, Mr's F150 and our planned-for wood shop. Going to be construction and carving. Plus furniture makeovers, lamp repair, you name it.

Right now we're in the midst of having a masonry heater put in. Mason's been here since first of December. Wasn't bad in December, only the basement was torn up. Now he's moved to the upstairs portion of the build, and EVERYTHING's torn up. Dust and grit everywhere. oy.

During the day I'm limited to the private parts of the house, so I've been spending a lot of time in the office. It is also a mess, because it's storing stuff from the living room area (which is swathed in plastic sheeting) and now has a side-table's worth of my embroidery supplies on it. So that's really my hobby, I like to hand embroider. It's been fun to sew every day, I must admit, but it's getting tiresome, too. Other things I like to do is plan out a a hoped-for kitchen redo (oh please please please) that is desperately needed...but infrastructure on the farm comes first. This year: fences! kaching

172 73 Pennsyltucky are you making your own trees?

Posted by: Skip at January 22, 2022 05:36 PM (2JoB

---------------

Yes, I'm using the bulk SuperTree material from Woodland Scenics to make armatures, and mostly Noch foliage since their fall colors are more accurate for this area. There are also a few wire-wrapped armatures I made, but they are ridiculously time-intensive. I have a fairly small layout this time around (30"x80"), so I can take the time to do all the trees individually rather than having large swaths of foam or puffballs.

Taking down Halloween decorations a few years ago I lost my balance and was about to do a header onto the sidewalk. Managed to twist in mid-fall and catch myself on my hands, but my back was still messed up for weeks.

Everytime I do stuff, I see all the ways it can go wrong. I try to be careful, but I also give my trust to God, because ultimately He decides when I'm done with this life.

First thing I put together was a push button that opens a chest containing a dog treat. Trying to encourage abstract thought in the pooches. Heh.

Now we're doing something electronic and artistic, so that should be fun. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet.

185 I need to fiind a new hobby, thinking about RC sailboats. My buddy had a carpenter in his boat shop that did woodwork on boats and he as a hobby he built RC sailboats from scratch. Way more advanced than I could do, I'll stick with a kit.

My last hobby was building a 23 foot center console. I didn't intend it to be a hobby but the company I was buying the boat from went belly up after I had put down my deposit and they molded the parts. So I took the pieces and put it together with my buddy who owns the boat shop and some of his guys. Sadly, we had no plans or instructions so we had to wing it.

Fun project but once was enough. A lot more work than it sounds.

196 My old wargaming group went down the tubes do to family deaths even before the two years of WuFlu but we hope to get back together this Spring doing 25/28mm Ancients using the To The Strongest TtS fastplay rule-set.

I've got painted Romans -- mainly EIR; and painted Celtic types I intend using as any Briton, Gaul, or Iberian Celtic types that I bought at an Ottawa convention, almost all 25mm Foundry, for a song, about the same price as unpainted Foundry with shipping nowadays, quite-well painted. I've also got a Foundry generic Greek City State force [although officially mainly Athenian types] that's half painted [by Fernando's painting service in Sri Lanka] and half in the boxes bought on sale from a gaming shop that was remaindering their stock. I might give it a try painting them myself as most of them are unarmoured light types without fancy shields and cavalry without shields either.

I got tangled up in the dogs' leashes (and the dogs) a few months back and went down - free-fall - onto both knees and then one hip. It happened in the blink of an eye. The pain was so intense I screamed for a few minutes w/o even almost realizing I was. I just knew my knees were seriously damaged but xrays showed them to be ok, albeit very very painful and sore for weeks. I've never fallen before as an adult but this fall left no doubt that everything can change in the blink of eye.
