Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov: The US Must Get Out of All Former Soviet States and Promise Unambiguously To Cede Them to Russia
France Is So Impressed by Brandon's Leadership They Want Separate Talks With Russia

Russia has accepted Brandon's invitation to execute a "minor incursion" into the Ukraine and has instead staged one across Eastern Europe.

Russia is demanding, ahead of security talks to take place in Geneva, that the US retreat completely from Eastern Europe, and essentially declare it to be the Soviet Sphere of Influence again.

Seriously, that's what they're demanding.

Russia wants Nato to remove all of its forces from Bulgaria, Romania and other ex-communist states in eastern Europe that joined the alliance after 1997, the foreign ministry said on Friday, underlining Moscow's hardline position ahead of security talks with the US in Geneva.

Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, said in a written Q&A on the ministry's website that Russia's demands included "withdrawing foreign forces, equipment, and armaments and making other steps to return to the condition as of 1997", when Nato began admitting former Warsaw Pact countries.

"That includes Bulgaria and Romania," Lavrov said, adding that Russia's demand was "core" and "deliberately worded as clearly as possible so as not to allow any dual interpretations".

I guess Brandon's magisterial one hour, fifty minutes of Successful Standing did not have the intimidating effect that Noted Foreign Policy Sage Rachel Maddow envisioned. They apparently were more impressed by his openly-inviting-them-to-conquer-Ukraine.

So, how strong is NATO, a year into Brandon's "presidency"?

So strong that French president Emanuel Macron wants Europe to hold separate negotiations with Russia, excluding the US.

French President Emmanuel Macron's call for the European Union to pursue its own talks with the Kremlin is raising fears of a split developing in the Western response to the threat of a Russian invasion in Ukraine.

Macron has struggled in the past to convince his EU partners of the need for Europe to take regional security into its own hands and depend less on the United States. His speech to European lawmakers Wednesday, though, in which he called for the bloc to negotiate its own security and stability pact with the Kremlin, was welcomed by Russian state-owned media.

But some Central European and Baltic leaders said Macron's comments were ill-timed and risk encouraging the Kremlin to try to play the U.S. and EU against each other, and cause a divide as the U.S. calls for Western unity.

Carl Bildt, the former Swedish prime minister, said he was at a loss to understand what Macron means about coming up with "a new order of security and stability."

36 Those countries are NATO allies. You can argue that they shouldn't be or that their admittance to the treaty organization was a provocation, but it doesn't change that they are. Putin smells blood and is going for it. He probably won't even take those countries as satellites, but he wants NATO out and might even get his way.

And if France goes outside of NATO for high-level discussions, then NATO is nearly dead anyway. Germany or Britain would be bigger deals, but France isn't nothing.

Brandon's "just the tip" strategic doctrine is working out great.

61 Not to worry! Our friends at DU link an article at foreignpolicy.com that says:

"The Biden administration is planning for a high-profile public showdown with Russia at the United Nations Security Council if Moscow intervenes in Ukraine...the Security Council, with its iconic horseshoe-shaped table and seats reserved for the world's big powers, has provided a visually powerful set piece for some of modern history's most dramatic geopolitical confrontations, from the Cuban missile crisis to the U.S.-led war in Iraq...The Biden administration wants to take advantage of that to highlight Russia's diplomatic isolation and, if possible, to place a wedge between Russia and its most powerful ally, China, which has been one of the council's proponents of defending the territorial sovereignty of U.N. member states."

I generally agree. Our NATO allies don't usually pull their own weight and we subsidize them. We're also incompetent and ineffective, which makes NATO essentially valueless. Russia is a regional threat to Eastern Europe and West Asia, but they are no longer a global threat. The reason for NATO - to counter-balance the USSR - hasn't existed since 1992.

I have long been of the opinion that NATO is overdue to be dismantled and replaced. Given American impotence and incompetence, it is going to fail anyway.

As soon as it became apparent that Trump was the nominee, then President, and then essentially the party and country, they kept the moniker but pretended it meant all along these bastions of stout resolution would "never" *support* "Trump".

Their own stupid name is still a badge of their ineffectual pointlessness - and they're so blinded by ego they can't change it.

221 Biden - and the country and world at large - are now learning the same lesson that they learned under Obama, only with nitrous oxide being pumped through it.

Deterrence, once lost, is difficult and high-risk to get back and regaining deterrence is a gamble that often ends in war. If you possess deterrence and like that, you must keep it rather than regain it. We lost deterrence under Obama in pretty significant ways. Trump's foreign policy was a combination of both ballsy *and* accommodating and it was multi-pronged (military, economy, trade, etc.). Trump didn't fully regain deterrence, especially around issues in Asia, but he made gigantic strides in that direction and did extremely well on that front. Korea was quiet. Russia was quiet. Asia generally was noisy but less so.

And now it's gone. The Brandon (mal)administration has done more damage in terms of security and deterrence and foreign policy in less than a year than Obama did in eight.

Now? Nothing. Trump did a decent job at checking Russian hegemony in Europe in a way that benefited us directly: energy (us to them) and enforcing financial obligations (them to us). That's over and done for now, and it isn't coming back without a war. Europe is lost to our interests now. There's still trade - and we need it, especially Germany, Italy, France and the UK - but that's it. We're not going to the hegemon there within two more years unless we go intervene militarily. The "submarine" deal was stupid all around.

We will not be delivering those nuke subs to Australia for likely 20 years. What good will they be then, if the balloon goes up over Taiwan....soon?
The French were ready to deliver the diesel-electric subs to Australia, but again, these would have very limited ability to project any force beyond say, 1000 miles of Australia.

So yes, the French always want to step out of the crowd and prove how clever Frenchmen are. Yes, they want to work a separate deal with Putin, and undermine the alliance that they don't run.
Germany is going to make a deal with Putin and Russia because they NEED their natural gas pipeline to stay warm and run their industries.

Good point.
Russia is strong...but not that strong. They will try to diplomatically bully their way over Eastern Europe but there isn't much they can do about it...especially if they get bogged down in the Ukraine. The Russians see themselves as European so it stands to reason they would entertain talks with France. They see the long term threat in China, not the US. Interesting factoid I received yesterday...there are a shitload of Chinese in Eastern Russia, in some areas they outnumber the Russians, and there isn't much Putin can do about it. A: Well, I know that, and that's why my Trade Rep is working on that right now. The answer is uncertain. It's uncertain. I'd like to be able to be in a position where I can say they're meeting the commitments, or more of their commitments, and be able to lift some of it. But we're not there yet.

Expect a lot of chaos and economic mayhem, possibly even a default on all of our debt, as everything one side orders done is countermanded by the other side.

Going to war, instead of letting Europe beat the shit out of each other until they're tired of hitting and getting hit, is why we are here. A bled dry, bankrupt empire falling in on itself. Except, now, we've got English speaking Communists to our North and a Narco State to our South.

546 It's all about NATO. And contrary to popular belief, NATO isn't controlled all that much by the US.

I can totally see Russia's point about this. There were promises made and those promises weren't kept. So Russia is saying keep them or we'll fix it our way.

And BTW letting Russia walk into the eastern part of the Ukraine (not even half more like a third) which is predominantly filled with Russians is not such a bad thing. Sure the Ukrainian politicians don't like it cause it takes a part of what they considered there's away but let's be real they had that part only at the permission of the Russians. And the Ukrainians know that they were just hoping that the US would draw line for them and maybe help out a bit.

They can all take a flying leap. The Europeans have been a load on America's back for over a hundred years. Time to stop worrying about the home country and see if we can't fix things here for a change.

Posted by: G'rump928(c)

The Russian Army is largely filled out with 1-2 year conscripts.
Morale, discipline and training are .....iffy. Probably from unit to unit.
On paper this would be a near peer conflict, but I have my doubts as to how well the Russian Army would actually perform.
And so really, I don't see them strong enough to annex Western Europe, and a part of Ukraine (to connect Donbass to Crimea) is what Putin has in mind.
I think we would be badly over extended to try and reach in there and confront the Russians.
There is nothing good about any of this, but there is also nothing good about getting over extended and humiliated militarily.
There are no good alternatives, and the Biden Regime has done this intentionally. Blinken was asked to reply in writing to the Russian foreign minister's requests some days ago, and has refused.

If true (and I believe it is because China is sorely lacking in the ability feed itself), then Russia's move makes a great deal of strategic sense. Cut off their food supply (and energy, if possible) and they are beholden to your will. Stalin already did this with the Ukraine a long time ago with the Holodomor.

617 Lavrov's demands represent a dramatic move to a more aggressive posture - though they're pretty clearly "opening bid"-type demands, and they don't expect to actually have them met.

The document that I think is the Russian proposed basis for the security talks, as I've noted once before, is a sort of striking document, reads like an INF Treaty ripped time-transported to 2022. Point being it's all about defensive concerns, NATO presence in relation to Russian territory, and medium-range nuclear systems.

Probably willowed by now. Bottom line: many of the issues engaged actually pre-date Biden and aren't directly related to his obvious unfitness (and that of his entire "team") - but having this ridiculous, ridiculous group of sub-mediocrities in charge definitely raises the risks (which is why serious countries never dream of putting such people in charge).

668 The warring cartoons and myths and straw men gets particularly intense here when a topic like this comes up.

All kinds of mundane realities that are (selectively, or alternatively) ignored along the way.

Russia is, indeed, economically very weak and mismanaged, and this is one reason Putin's press conferences, speeches, and Duma debates center on regional development, social spending, etc. NATO is a weird relic with no actual "alliance" military power of note, though a few members retain some limited capability. Russia's current foreign policy patterns in the western "near abroad" are characteristically defensive - the often paranoid/excessive sort, but essentially defensive.

Crimea was the only major land grab likely to occur; parts of eastern Ukraine (Russian "ethnic" majority) sort of are/have been/will end up being, de facto, "taken". That's it for territory. No conventional wars.

That's not true - in WWI we basically made all of the ammo and a good chunk of the weapons used by the Allies. They then used the people freed up by this to make the rest of the tools needed. After the war these countries owed the US a lot of money, and Wilson tried to use that influence to play politics in the Peace Treaty.

We turned away somewhat from swinging the big stick, but we were involved in naval arms limitation treaties and were allotted the largest navy, same as the UK.

That went double or triple in WWII where our equipment was used all over - tanks, planes, and so on.

Posted by: Oldcat at January 21, 2022 02:24 PM (eoQWY)

isolationist in/before WWII? the US was fighting the U Boats in half of the Atlantic and we were shipping arms to one side without them even paying long before we entered the war officially.

The US was heavily involved in all international arms limitation and naval treaties and got allotments of the largest allowed size of fleets.

The army, on the other hand, would have needed nearly the same amount of time since rearming started long before Pearl Harbor and the Navy we used was still being built up. So 1939-40 goes just about the same way.
