  • A lot is made of how the blockchain is distributed and decentralised and fault-tolerant and no one person can control it and then a hamster in Hong Kong sneezes and all your NFTs disappear. (ZDNet)

OpenSea's site went down around 6AM and was restored by 8:30AM. And the blockchains themselves - Ethereum, Klaytn, and Polygon are the ones OpenSea supports - were working as usual, or in the case of Polygon, completely fucked - again - but still technically alive.

But NFTs were missing from users' wallets another seven hours. What was going on?

Well, you have to understand that blockchain APIs are basically garbage. Writing a wallet that can actually display a user's NFTs on an Ethereum-compatible network using the standard APIs is nightmarishly difficult. It's the mobile app equivalent of making a chicken sandwich from scratch.
It ultimately took him six months and $1,500 to make the final product using a thorough 16-step process that required him to grow a garden (step 1), harvest wheat (step 10) and even, yes, slaughter a chicken (step 14).
But OpenSea has an API that makes it much easier. So, not wanting to spend six months only to end up choking a chicken, every wallet developer uses the OpenSea API.

    Every wallet developer.

When OpenSea hiccups, every NFT wallet in the world breaks.

    Because decentralisation.

Pixy Is Watching Video of the Day

I was scrolling through Amazon Prime (I cancelled Netflix long ago but keep Prime for the free deliveries) wondering if they had anything worth my time. They have House but it doesn't have Teardrop as the opening theme so forget that. And then I tripped over Iroduku. And ended up watching it until around 2AM.
Rewatching it, because I've seen it already; it's just that good.

Also, the YouTube ID for that video is zZSksScSczs.

If you don't have Amazon Prime don't fret because somehow the whole thing is also on YouTube.

House Like It's 2022 Video of the Day

The three opening themes of House. The first is Teardrop by Massive Attack, and is the only correct theme. The second one is like when your favourite brand is out of stock and you have to buy store brand and you get it home and you find that it's actually not that bad but you go right back to your regular brand anyway.

The third is predigested crap.

So guess which one Amazon is giving me.

Party Like It's 1980 Video of the Day

Disclaimer: The problem with making a chicken sandwich from scratch is you just can't get good scratch anymore.

She still was years later. A girl I dated in about 1987 mixed the young Janet Jackson look with Pat Benatar, and pulled it off well.

'Twill be chilly tomorrow and Sunday am, so probably no workouts except for stretches and calisthenics indoors, and no washing the car.

26 13 F. degrees here. Below null.

Heat pump equipped here. There was some discussion the other day about heat pumps, and their suitability in extreme cold. I can say they don't like temperatures much below freezing. But there are other considerations. Cost of electricity per Kwh, versus natural gas, or oil, etc. As far as the air conditioner side of the equation they work fine or identical. Electricity rates, while they aren't giving it away around here overall it keeps the AO habitable.

When it gets real cold, and stays cold for days on end, and doesn't come up, particularly with high winds, that's when opening the power bill is cringe-worthy. Overall, they work better than you might think. Good insulation is key, as well.

I was the one wondering about heat pumps. Every listing I saw for a house I could afford in small-town or rural Virginia said "heat pump," though I'd specified "Must have A/C." So I wondered how they do in hot weather and cold.

I wonder how Virginia is to live in, too. Though I still like the idea of WV.

30 Yeah, Mr. Loaf wasn't my fave. But I did like Ted Nugent, who employed him on the Free For All LP to good effect on a few tracks. The regular lead singer had quit. "Writing On The Wall" is epic Ted. Kind of different - no arrangements, just a lyric sheet with this kind of singer, paid him $1000 but somehow it worked.

C kind of sucks. (Jean G3nie)

I looked at the examples in the article and in the language I settled on I could have written one line of code to format the integer and restrict the input to numeric only and some other controls.

It was called Clipper. Some people referred to it as (C)lipper because of the resemblance to C in some ways. It's a dinosaur by now I guess.

88 When I was a little kid, I remember my parents were gone one day, and also noticed, the Electric meter had that spinny thing, turned really slow. I wondered, how fast could I make that go? Pretty fast!! I turned on everything I could find, every light, the stove, etc.

Bet dear old Dad was pissed that month!

Heh. My dad (parents divorced, only saw him about one weekend a month) had some beautiful convertible late 60's Buick Electra. He stopped once at the high school where he worked as an Assistant Principal, told me to wait for him -- and he was gone for nearly an hour. I was probably 6 or 7.

[In hindsight, likely to hookup with and screw some woman he was cheating with.] Anyway, I was so bored and annoyed, I started playing with all four doors' electric window openers/closer buttons. Up and Down, Up and Down, over, and over.

When he finally emerged, and saw what I was doing he was plenty pissed. Had drained the battery enough that the car barely started ... good times, good times.

Meatloaf was on "Monk" for an episode, where he played Reverend Hadley Jorgensen in "Mister Monk and the Voodoo Curse". His was a comedic role there and I remember him saying, "What are you, mental?" when Natalie drank one of his potions that was not intended to be consumed. I had a good laugh at that, as I had not used that term spoken since we were kids, back in the day.

119 Everyone has their tastes, my wife in our middle age rekindled a liking to Meat Loaf, after loving him at first on his late nite appearance that launched BOOH back in the 70s.

Our first trip to see him was to Atlantic City and we flew back home on 9/11, crossing paths w/ the plane that crashed in PA.

We have seen many concerts since then, always enjoyed him, met him several times. A really nice down to earth guy.

Sorry to hear he died, he was a really nice in person, very fun. I'm kinda bummed at his death. RIP kind soul, he was a good guy.

In this past year we have lost both my in-laws, and an old friend from work from 32 yrs. Then the crushing news about Tami and Oregon Muse. Then today Meat, or Marvin Lee Aday. RIP dear souls.

Now our favorite musician is at peace, he was a nice guy if you met him, really cool. I can't bring myself to link his songs, I'm sure you can find them, and I'm to very sad I'm not going there. We were blessed by his presence.

Bat Out of Hell is iconic. Odd that he didn't survive Jim Steinman by long. Heaven can wait...like a band of angels...

The modern heat pumps are getting damn impressive, efficiency wise. We've got one here in Miley and me's new house. Part of that is insulation. I'm damned impressed with the insulation.

Even down in the mid to high 20s, the heat pump still cycles. The one at my parents' house, put in around 2014 or so, will run continuously when the temp gets to the low 30s, and the only cycling is the strips. Defrost cycle there is a killer.

This thing has one hell of an intelligent defrost. It only defrosts when it absolutely has to. I thought the thing had froze over, but no, it was just waiting.

And the damn thing doesn't defrost as usual. It waits until the cycle is sastified, and then defrosts, without runnin the indoor blower. I don't know how it gets away with that, but it doesn. I assume if the indoor coil were to get too cold, it would do something. But it has never had to.

This heat pump runs the strips very little. Even at outdoor temp of 30F, the vent output temperature is quite warm, low to mid 90F. In higher outside temperature, vent outlet temp is over 110F.

The defrost trick make it very efficient. On my parents older unit, when defrosting in cold weather, with the strips running, vent output temperate can drop below indoor temp. This is losing heat that has to be made up.

This one doesn't do that. I assume, when defrosting, if the indoor coil were to get to cold, some control logic would do something, turn on the blower and energize the strips, but it has never had to do that.

Yeah, those earth water loop heat exchangers can be quote efficient. And there are variations on it, such as on house I was wiring back the mid 90s.

Rather than closed water loop, it just used well water. Output went right into the septic tank. Water came out of the ground, exchanged heat with the heat pump, then went back in the ground through the septic tank.

Sort of blew my mind. That put extra load on the well, but they had enough capacity, and they had to size the septic tank a little bigger. The HVAC man assured me that was damned efficient.

Unless the water table got too low and the well ran dry. Other than that, it was good.

Virtue signaling is nothing but marketing.

With "Woke" advertising, it is hitting the trigger emotions that have been programmed for a generation now. If you show a white guy in your advertisements, the white guy is a negative emotion and will pull down the desirability of the product.

Notice that more and more advertising has gratuitous displays of windmills and solar farms (mostly windmills because they move and are interesting in video). This has everything to do with triggering "good" emotions.

Its all Pavlovian now.

266 Enable advanced simulation and modeling to support the U.S. nuclear stockpile and ensure its reliability and security.

Because no one knows if it will work right now. Not that it would matter, no one is going to ever use them. The only time when they are used even as threats is when some Democrat openly fantasizes about bombing US cities.

But their target audience is definitely mentally unwell and in need of stability. Their product kills the immune system, destroys the body through insulin instability and build up of insulin resistance.

So they need to sell this dreck to people who need comfort food and are too stupid and emotionally unstable to care about the damage - because chocolate and sugar feel so good Right Now.

283 Use Ada

FORTRAN Forever!

Posted by: Fox2! at January 21, 2022 09:40 AM (3FBAK)

284 Use Ada.

Seriously.

Dear God, never! SERIOUSLY. Ada is ok when you're in a huge team with high variability in ability, but if you've got competent people there are better options.

Language choice will influence how difficult a task is. Serious, hard core number crunching and FORTRAN is your thing (the libraries are rock solid, the execution order and precision is tightly specified, and everything is verified). Stats? Well, you can't beat R. Small memory spaces and underpowered hardware? C is your tool of choice.

Ada is something you only deal with when the federal government pays you by the hour to write code. At least here in the US, the number of projects using Ada that aren't heavily regulated by, or under the direct command of, the Feds is minimal. The language isn't a bad one, it's just that by the time you get all the formal overhead stuff out of the way you've probably forgotten why you wanted to actually write that subroutine.
