It was a Robin Hood tale, years before he did Robin Hood, Men in Tights. Dick Gaultier played Robin, Dick Van Patton was Friar Tuck, Doc from the Love Boat was Alan a-Dale and Misty Rowe was Maid Marian.

Your government at work. The airlines want the C-Band 5G rollout suspended because it can interfere with altimeters. The cell networks paid a fortune for that band space and don't want to stop the rollout. In both cases, neither is beholden to the other.

This precise problem - limited band space, undesirable interference, safety and access concerns in overlapping domains - is why we have a regulatory structure in place. And what are the regulators doing? Getting into mutual pissing matches with each other. The cell networks answer to the FCC, the airlines to the FAA. The FCC says all is well for the rollout, the FAA says it isn't. The FAA is mandating shielding for some airports but not others. Any aircraft with shielded equipment prone to interference from 5G will be restricted to those airports that are site-protected.

In their ineptitude, they have come up with lousy compromises and no agreement on anything of substance. Your government at work.

You could call it the "Luther Paradox" after the BBC cop series Luther. Played by the imposing Idris Elba, Luther is a detective who is, as with the rest of the UK police, unarmed. So. . .every time Luther corners the killer and confronts him, the perp decides to take his chances -- grabs a pipe, baseball bat, kitchen knife -- and lunges at Luther. Being huge, Luther eventually pounds the crap out of the perp, brings him to the police station, and is then reprimanded and/or suspended for abusing the perp. This happens each time.

Now, if Luther were armed, the perp would comply with the arrest without a punch being thrown.

But yeah, it's the guns that make cops violent.

No idea. As Anna pointed out, the allocated frequencies are a couple of hundred MHz apart. There shouldn't be a problem on that basis, but the airline industry (and the FAA, I think) position is either that interference is a known risk or that we don't actually know and thus risks are potentially huge from the standpoint of both capital and lives (I am not sure which of those is correct).

The FAA and the airlines are extremely conservative and defer to safety. The FCC errs on the side of technological advancement. The two are in conflict in this case and have proven themselves unable to solve a mutual problem.

It's good in a bad way. We (they) still lost two years, and all on purpose.

288 British Airways Speedbird 007 flew through the ash cloud of an erupting Indonesian volcano en route to Australia on an overnight flight.

All four engines of the 747 eventually flamed out after the crew was treated to St. Elmo's fire. The ash cloud clogged the engines. But as the airplane glided to certain doom the crew kept trying to restart the engines.

Miraculously they eventually got all four engines going. Only to flame out again because they had turned around to the closest airport and flew through the ash cloud again*.

They got the engines started again and flew to the airport they had just departed. On approach they realized they could not see through the cockpit windows because the fine ash had turned them opaque.

Luckily they still were able to land safely. The only reason they were able to restart the engines was because the ash cooled and fell away from the turbine blades.

*The ash cloud was invisible on the weather radar which is why they flew through it twice.

Sad to say, AKC judge Joe Gregory passed away this week. He was 94. He judged the Hound Group at Houston and gave Lila a Group 1. He was remarkably energetic for a man of his age, literally jumping and spinning as he watched the exhibits going around. He was one of the few judges licensed to do all the AKC-recognized breeds. Sympathies to his wife Evalyn and his family.

350 I've been a "gamer" (PC) for decades, but over time my taste has gotten very niche and selective. I don't buy many games, and the games I do buy have massive replayability (and I don't mind supporting studios with DLCs that add new content to these games, such as Paradox Studios -- it's not that this business model is beyond critique, but I appreciate that it continually allows for good games (like CK2) to get better over time.

I haven't owned a console since a SEGA Genesis. Recently I purchased a console for my kid (Thing 1). It took me a bit to set it up and it amazed me how much these things are embedded with micro-transactions. Kinda pissed me off when Thing 1 opens up a game on the new console and immediately wants to have a locked "DLC" that's a character reskin.

No, Thing 1, you will not have this.

Must be getting old -- can't help but think that the gaming scene used to be better before it was all corporatized.

Posted by: sniffybigtoe at January 18, 2022 10:54 AM (UuD2k)

FBI said he bought the gun "on the street". Yeah, riiight. How is a foreigner, a Paki with a Brit accent, going to find some gang-banger willing to do business with in just a day or so? Dollars to donuts, he had a list of radical mosques in the DFW area, went to one or two, confided in some like-minded jihadi Johnny, and got a gun there. And maybe jihadi Johnny was an FBI asset.

Twitter? Nightly fifteen minutes on all radio and TV networks? They communicate a lot as it is. The problem isn't available channels or bandwidth, it's that too many people dislike the message.

I've not played Halo or Half-Life. Closest thing to a shooter that I've played somewhat recently was "Prey" (2017), which really isn't a shooter (it's an immersive sim).

I'd recommend Prey.

372 Just the thought of being on a plane when suddenly the cabin floors collapses into the burning cargo compartment makes my skin crawl.

At least two DC-10s had their cargo doors blow out and collapse the floors because MDD decided they should open outward as it gave them more luggage space.

That was a period in airline aviation that saw many big catastrophes. I really do think that they were the product of the changeover to the larger jumbo type jets. Plus some sloppy engineering of airframes to keep competitive.

So at a minimum, the FBI had an asset in the welcome committee which provided the gun. Whether money changed hands or not is irrelevant. You don't grab an uber at the airport and say take me to the nearest illegal gun dealer.

380 It's got the O with a line through it, so Scandinavian country, likely. Denmark....Sweden?

Posted by: Sponge - Saying Ashli Babbitt at January 18, 2022 09:33 AM (Zz0t1)

This is in Norway, although Denmark also uses the O with a line through it. Swedes put an "umlaut" thing over this kind of O.

Note that these are considered completely different letters, not just Os with decorations (like in French, with accent grave or accent aigu).

However, in Sweden, W and V are considered the same letter. You'll see them mixed together in the phone book, for example.
