The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The whole country had been pent up and everybody decided to come to the American west at the same time,” Jason Williams, chair of the Jackson Hole chamber of commerce and owner of a wildlife tour company.

Quote II

"Atlas Shrugged is ponderous but everyone should read it. It's a brilliant contrast of statism v. individualism. It perfectly captures the dismal failure of leftist rule & points to a choice: Live for the state or yourself. I chose me." Jim Hanson, author and executive director of America Matters

Quote III

“All these blue state governors listen to him and think that it’s science to close a restaurant at 10 o’clock at night or to say that we have to have 25 percent of patrons. There’s no evidence that any of the mitigation, any of the rules, and mandates changed the trajectory of the virus at all.” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)

Quote IV

“Economic insecurity and fears of covid are indeed [causing] a profound undermining of people’s hopes and expectations and plans for the future. This may be much more universal than we anticipated.” Rachel Snow, a senior U.N. population official

Oh my a potential shortage of Democrat constituents?

Quote V

“Let this serve as a reminder to all of us to get vaccinated and follow CDC guidelines to minimize the spread of COVID-19,” Ken WelchMayor-elect of St. Petersburg, FL

Basically it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when, you come down with the Kung Flu.

You think meat is expensive now? Just wait until our "capitalist" Resident of the White House comes to the rescue.

Jan 3 (Reuters) - The United States will issue new rules and $1 billion in funding this year to support independent meat processors and ranchers as part of a plan to address a lack of “meaningful competition” in the meat sector, President Joe Biden said on Monday.

The initiative comes amid rising concerns that a handful of big beef, pork and poultry companies have too much control over the American meat market, allowing them to dictate wholesale and retail pricing to profit at the expense of their suppliers and customers.

"Capitalism without competition isn’t capitalism. It’s exploitation," Biden said. "That’s what we’re seeing in meat and poultry industries now.”

A recent White House analysis found that the top four meatpacker companies - Cargill (CARG.UL), Tyson Foods Inc (TSN.N), JBS SA , and National Beef Packing Co (MRFG3.SA) - control between 55% and 85% of the market in the hog, cattle, and chicken sectors.

I suppose the thousands and thousands of federal, state and local laws from OSHA, EPA, DNR, etc., have nothing to do with it.

Zappa fans know who Billy The Mountain is. It is hard to believe that Billy and his colleague Mt. Everest are racists.

Team of black climbers to scale Mt Everest to combat its ‘intentional lack of access for black people’

An experienced team of nine black climbers dubbed “The Full Circle Everest Expedition” will attempt to scale Mt. Everest in the spring of 2022, after two years of preparation; the stated mission reveals their goal is to combat the mountain’s ‘intentional lack of access for black people’ and mountaineering’s ‘colonial history’.

They have also established a GoFundMe page to assist in their efforts, which has garnered them over $150,000 in support to this point.

Commercial fishermen have a difficult and dangerous job. Throw in 3rd world communist geographical locations and you get this: 'Photographer captures eerie graveyard of North Korean schooners scattered along the Russian coast'

Photographer Natalya Bulkina travelled to the place locals call the Pirates Graveyard - a long stretch of deserted beach several hours away from Vladivostok, close to where the borders of Russia, North Korea and China nearly join each other.

This is one of the areas in the Far East of Russia where North Korean poachers’ wooden boats end up after getting hit by storms.

Sometimes they carry exhausted fishermen, quite often they are thrown ashore with their bodies on board - or empty.

‘This story gave me a strong feeling of despair, audacity, risk and fear, as I was taking pictures of what was left of the poachers’ boats. Standing close to them you just about guess the drama of these peopleб who went into the sea in such flimsy vessels,’ Natalya told The Siberian Times.

How does one go about having an intelligent conversation with members of the Taliban?

Taliban order beheading of shop mannequins

The Taliban have ordered a series of mannequin beheadings, telling clothes shops to remove the heads of dummies that offend Islam.

The instructions were given by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in the western Afghan province of Herat.

Aziz Rahman, the head of the local department of the ministry, described the mannequins as “statues” and claimed that they were being worshipped, which is prohibited under Islam.

The ONT's Kung Flu coverage came across the following: 'Crimes against Our Country'

The year of sickening global psychosis ended with virologist and vaccine-uberspecialist Dr. Robert Malone truth-bombing the Internet with three hours of straight talk about the US health authorities’ campaign to destroy the lives of at least half a million US citizens (so far) and, leading by example, to harm multiples of that number of innocent people across all of Western Civilization. Podcaster Joe Rogan assisted skillfully in an interview that is finally rocking the world out of an epic consensus trance. (Listen.)

By health authorities I don’t just mean Dr. Anthony Fauci, the designated National SARS-CoV-2 Coordinator, or his accomplices in the Dept. of Health and Human Services agencies, CDC, NIH, NIAID, etc., but also the purblind US medical establishment of actual doctors in clinical practice, researchers, hospital administrators, and pharma executives who acted with a collective stupid malevolence not seen since the crematory-stuffers of the Nazi bureaucracy carried out their final solution.

We know what you did. You engineered and patented a gain-of-function virus at the same time you conspired with pharma companies to devise and patent pseudo-vaccines, and then you loosed both of them on the public. You didn’t just fail to adequately test the “vaccines” cooked up by Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson, but you deliberately botched the trials and lied about it. You created rich $$ incentives for hospitals to mis-treat Covid patients by failing to use known, safe, effective anti-virals. You conspired with social and news media to suppress information about those common anti-viral drugs that would have informed many patients’ decisions and saved thousands of lives. You treated late-stage patients dying of Covid-induced vascular disorder with the ineffective and toxic drug remdesivir that Dr. Fauci had developed unsuccessfully for an ebola outbreak years ago. (Nurses turned so cynical about the remdesivir protocol that they nicknamed it “run-death-is-near.” You prompted government officials to lockdown society, force useless masking, and now to coerce “vaccination” by threatening to deprive citizens of their livelihoods.

Last night we looked at Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis being with his wife during cancer treatments. Tonight we look at a wife and mother who doesn't get it.

I had wanted, I thought, soapstone counters and a farmhouse sink. I had wanted an island and a breakfast nook and two narrow, vertical cabinets on either side of the stove; one could be for cutting boards and one could be for baking sheets. I followed a cabinetry company called Plain English on Instagram and screenshotted its pantries, which came in paint colors like Kipper and Boiled Egg. Plain English cost a fortune, but around a corner in the back of its New York showroom you could check out the budget version, called British Standard. But it cost a fortune too. I wished there was a budget British Standard. I wished there was a room behind that room, the cabinets getting flimsier and flimsier until a door opened and let me back into my own shitty American kitchen, just as it was.

My husband talked to the architect; my husband talked to the builder. And I kept paring the plans down, down, making them cheaper, making them simpler. I nixed the island and found a stainless-steel worktable at a restaurant-supply store online for $299. I started fantasizing about replacing the counters with two-by-fours on sawhorses and hanging the pots from nails on the wall. Slowly, I realized, I didn’t want this kitchen. Slowly, I realized, I didn’t want this life.

I didn’t want to renovate. I wanted to get divorced.

The good old state of California keeps getting loonier. 'Surprise: California Rules Will Make Solar More Expensive'

It’s already expensive, and the state of the People’s Republik Of California is requiring more and more be used to replace all the reliable, dependable, low cost oil, gas, and nuclear. So, let’s make it more expensive

Tesla Fights California Law That Could Make Solar Energy Costs Soar

In an announcement issued in late December, and reported by CNBC last Friday, electric vehicle and solar roof manufacturer Tesla has asked employees to fight a new California proposal that could make residential rooftop solar energy more expensive for many homeowners.

Under the legislation, residents using solar power would have to pay grid-connection charges based on the size of their system. The legislation would also reduce payments solar customers in California receive for selling their excess power back to the grid.

In addition to free electricity and a more sustainable lifestyle, the capability to sell excess power back to the grid is one of the primary attractions to solar electricity for many consumers. By selling excess power back, consumers can achieve net-zero electric bills or even receive money back from utility companies.

In a tweet from Dec. 13, 2021, @WholeMarsBlog pointed out that if the new tax rate was set at $8 per kilowatt-hour, as proposed, it could cost some Tesla Solar Roof owners as much as $80 a month for a 10 kW system. Elon Musk replied on Twitter, “Penalizing sustainable energy is insane.”

The ONT Musical Interlude

Go away kid and come back when you something better. (H/T CBD)
LOS ANGELES – A judge has dismissed a lawsuit alleging sexual exploitation brought by the Los Angeles man pictured as a naked baby on the cover of the multimillion-selling Nirvana album “Nevermind,” court documents obtained today show.

Spencer Elden, 30, filed suit last year, alleging that the former members of the rock trio, various record companies, art directors and others violated federal criminal child pornography laws and caused him to suffer “lifelong damages” by “trafficking” his image worldwide.

Defense attorneys moved to dismiss the lawsuit last month, arguing that Elden’s complaint didn’t hold up.

In his order to dismiss late Monday, U.S. District Judge Fernando Olguin noted that Elden hadn’t lodged any opposition to the defendants’ dismissal request. The judge gave Elden a chance to amend his complaint and refile by Jan. 13.

70 On the racially pure Everest climbers:

I saw a documentary of a trailblazing female climber in the USSR in the 70s who at one point decided to climb a major peak with an all female team. They avoided climbing at times male groups were coming up or down and as they ascended they concealed that one of their group was having altitude sickness and they got caught on the mountain by weather and died there. It seemed that there were many decisions made not on safety but to preserve the purity of the event of the all woman climb.

I think some people like to envision they're living inside an Ingmar Bergman film.

All that self-actualization stuff never really works out the way people think it's going to. It generally turns out that you leave the world you think is unfulfilling and banal and wind up drinking in poor company and eating swanky meals out of to go boxes by yourself at your Pottery Barn table.

Having people that love you unequivocally is a dream greater than all the others, but the brain often can't comprehend that from inside the relationship.

Having went through a remodeling process using both DIY and contractors, it is enough to make both spouses nuts.

Some of the issues involve the contractor does not do what is requested, unseen problems occur, the final look is not what is desired, it is out of date before you finish, cost issues, dealing with mess issues, and so on. Kind of like a baby, if your relationship is on shaky ground to begin with, remodeling a house like babies will probably give the final blow to it.

117 you guys read the Atlantic article?!?! you're made of stronger stuff than I am.

so the lyft driver thing in Philly is cute the way Breitbart frames it, but to me it's horrible.

first, no one here knew about it until it broke nationally. our local press buried the whole thing until it got out. why would they do that?

second, this is a new trend in carjacking where you get in what seems to be a normal fender bender but it's a trick to carjack you. this particular one was again, middle of the day. near the Philadelphia Zoo. i know it had to have been pretty busy there then, and lots of tourists and people from outside the City. So. it's a terrible awful "look" for Philly to have this happen.

third, I love the driver and he did great. but that asshat Krasner is gunning for him. the DA's reaction (along with Outlaw and the MoronMayor) was to warn Philadelphians NOT TO DO THIS. just give your car to them! just let them have it!

this is HORRIBLE ADVICE! you will get raped and murdered this way.

here's my advice. don't worry about ANY fender bender in the city limits. just keep fucking driving. oh and don't stop for stops and roll thru red lights

All that literacy and education and it is used to fluff and posture about how she can't handle responsibility and thinks it is more fun to live a fantasy about life in a big city. 143 There used to be a music festival on Labor Day weekend, "Bumbershoot."

In the 80s and 90s you could get in for less than 10 bucks and roam the Seattle Center and see bands of all types play on stages throughout the center. Indoor, outdoor, the opera house, the food area... every couple hundred feet, there was a different sound.

I danced to Soundgarden more times than I could
Count with less than a hundred people in a little
Indoor space. We knew they were gonna make it.

Heard a Cuban trumpet player that made my soul listen.
Reggae and classical and opera and grunge and country. And everyone was high and happy and no one gave a shit what color you were or what your musical tastes were. There was something there for everyone.

The President of the United States has been AWOL as the country continues through crisis upon crisis.

Also it seems that the Secretary of Transportation gig can be removed and the functions consolidated to other departments.

Donald Trump had a Communist Chinese agent as Transporation Secretary, apparently as a quid pro quo to the America hating and seditious Mitch McConnell in order for anything Trump wanted to do to get passed.

Then we have Mayor Pete who disappeared for months on end with no one missing him.

Apparently the Secretary of Transportation is a harmless sinecure used primarily for patronage.

By accident and in general, no, I don't dispute that.

However, if you stress the 'normal life' in your decisions, there is no reason why life can't be 'normal' for anyone.

My nephew has 2.8 kids, a job, a house, goes to church, does mission trips, is an avid reader and loves his family. He lives a purpose driven life.

I drove to Alaska with a buddy in a truck with a dying battery. Worked in a restaurant, developed a crush on a married woman who looked like Carrie Ann Moss, went to Arizona with another buddy, enlisted in the Army, went to Fort Sill, then Fort Sam, met the woman I would marry, had two kids in Germany, came home, did all the other things to get where I am now, some 29 years later.
I did some dumb things, but I did a lot of smart things too. I need to remember that I have what I have because I made some crazy decisions.

I got offered the idea that the source of loneliness and dissatisfaction is not the number and quality of people you are with, but the difference between what you expect and what you experience. That is why you can feel content alone and lonely in a crowd.

If self actualization gets you off your butt to do something, it is good, otherwise accept the world as it is and plan what you need to do to make it what you want. Otherwise actualization just mocks you with what ain't happening.

That's the root of it, really. It's all about control. Not about mere serfdom as an economic arrangement, but actual universal control of things like viruses and the atmosphere and freaking plate tectonics. It's as if they think they were successful in killing God, and have to take over the reigns of the entire Universe themselves. It's the Will To Power turned into an all encompassing form of government. It is, basically, Evil.

The team I'm on has a not-in-writing rule that we do NOT publish on Facebook or elsewhere "health" updates. If one of us has a "cold", we leave it at that and stay away from the rest of the team for a few days. We will NOT hand the other side the tools to sideline or divert us from what we want in life.

Take Vitamin D3. Take Vitamin C. If you can get quercetin, take it with Zinc Sulfate (it works the same as HCQ), or resveratrol. They are ionophores, that will help move Zinc across the cell membranes, and the Zinc kills the virus. Some good nutritional pharmacies have Quercetin, and you can get it through Amazon, if you can't find it elsewhere.
If you can get veterinarian grade Ivermectin (that there horse paste), it will stop the virus cold. I treated my sick (24 year old) son with it last summer, and he was over it in 2 days.

Posted by: Kindltot at January 04, 2022 10:44 PM (ZMraq)

I think that is fairly insightful thought.

I had to come to the conclusion in my own life that I'm not all great at all. Not even really novel or unique, not in my triumphs, tribulations or abilities. Not enough to be the center of the universe, for certain.

The way out of feeling let down by reality is understanding that you basically are a letdown to the unrealistic expectations yourself. By recognizing your own inadequacy, you can realize you have no right to demand more and, in fact, there actually isn't 'more'.

It's then that you can realize that someone that cherishes you as if you are 'more' is such a unique gift, because you certainly have nothing that commands such adoration about you. So they are giving what you do not have due to you if their own volition. Chuck that gift aside and not only are you not 'more', you actually aren't even average.

Yes, the major issue is fitting and the work itself can be done with a file or stone, albeit slowly. Trawling Ebay for parts is another way. And a third way is to call the folks at Numrich who might be able to suggest a firing pin from another model that might work with minor alterations.

A good gunsmith or even a machinist can fabricate one. Wisner's Inc is a firm that constructs them from scratch with CNC machining. Before giving up, I would try four sources for it. Lee's Gun Parts in Irving Texas, Bob's Gun Parts in Royal Arkansas, Popperts Gun Parts in PA, and Jack First in South Dakota.

304 Orange Ent, I did not mention springs. Springs are usually one of the easier things to alter if you know the specs of the original spring. Numrich, if you call them is good at it, so is Brownells and springs are a usual thing for a good gunsmith to be able to create or alter.

The one thing that I did not mention regarding a firing pin is heat treatment. You want a firing pin to be tough enough to hold its shape and be able to hit the primer properly as to reliably set it off. At the same time, you cannot have a brittle firing pin as if it splinters off a hunk, it can pierce a primer which is not a good thing. It releases hot gas out of the cartridge and into the action (perhaps into eyes or other tender body parts as well). Some folks learned that by using nails as an ersatz fix for a firing pin. Those were soft enough not to splinter but the pointed end was pretty much going to pierce primers with unpredictable effects.

Actually, I defended the use of gasoline for firestarting, as a last resort, if you don't have diesel or kerosene on hand, and if you exercise due caution. That idiot in the video splashed it on himself. What did he think would happen? Darwin smiles.

308 "Atlas Shrugged is ponderous but everyone should read it. It's a brilliant contrast of statism v. individualism. It perfectly captures the dismal failure of leftist rule & points to a choice: Live for the state or yourself. I chose me."

-

I'm always astonished at those who, even on our side, criticize this novel as "ponderous" or too long at 1000+ pages. WTAF? Yet they can quote chapter/verse of the far more verbose/contradictory bible?

Not to mention libertarians/conservatives who criticize Ayn Rand in general -- primarily because she was a-theistic, even though she passionately and succinctly observed and warned us about the dangers and inevitable destruction/death inherent in collectivism.

It's is a brilliant philosophical treatise that served as the root of what was later developed into an entire, comprehensive, integrated, and rational moral philosophy she dubbed "Objectivism." For all her faults (quelle horreur, not perfect like those who criticize her!), she helped make sense to rational individuals of a predominantly irrational world ... which has only intensified and proved her right throughout my six decades in this formerly great country.

K2 is an extremely hard mountain to climb compared with Everest. There are over 20 peaks in the Himalayas over 23,000 feet that have not been climbed. Some because they are remote and difficult to get to carrying enough supplies for an ascent campaign; some because they have been too hard to climb for everyone trying so far.

Brownell's also has gunsmiths on staff and in a couple of weeks, I can check with my old timey gunsmith as well. He is a third generation of a family running the shop and they fix the gamut from old blackpowder rifles, early smokeless, and modern firearms.

I'd say that Everest hasn't a damn to give about anyone's anything. One either arrives with the skill, stamina, gear and preparation, or one dies. And often, one dies with all of the above being present at the start. 'Cause not only does the mountain have no damns to give, but neither does the weather. Especially, the weather.

I think that may be true just in general.

Rome abandoned their pantheon and the militaristic, patriotic virtues it instilled, and everything started to go to hell for them. China's people strayed from Confucius and Sun Yat Sen took the emperor out allowing a guy like Mao to ride bareback over all of China. France incubated the worst of European crazypants atheist philosophy, and yadda yadda cake guillotines Terror.

What was left behind in those cases was hardly heaven on earth, sure, but i think the point stands that abandoning a nation's faith, whatever it is, is the precursor to big changes.

Their next door neighbors son is a smoke jumper and he stayed in their neighborhood for 36 hours to save 10 houses.

I talked to my boss briefly today. He was so pissed! Amazon was trying to deliver a package in his neighborhood. There is NOTHING there

We remodeled our kitchen and main level about 5 years ago. Totally collabrated.

I'd give 'em an option. $100k, straight up. Or $20k, with the first $10k of that paid to the customer, and then all subsequent revenues to owned by the company, forever. Massively lawyered contracts to that effect, valid in Nepal, the USA and Eurotrashland. All others pay the $100k rate, front, as their adherence to "contracts" is historically questionable, at best.

But first, we've got to get the business a cool name, and the corporation maybe a kinda cool name, but certainly, a snarky one!

Wow, I am jealous. I did grunge in Milwaukee and did manage to see Nirvana on the last tour. By that point Nirvana wasn't "cool" anymore even though the last album was anti-commercial if anything. That's the thing about serious hipsters. If something they like gets popular, even if it doesn't change, they don't like it anymore. Okay, then you have the coiled outside hammer. Looks like the firing pins are available from Numrich and those are used by flat and coiled spring versions. The coiled mainsprings are out of stock but Numrich can probably get you fixed up there as Crescent made a lot of firearms and it is possible that some other make has similar coiled springs. The flat spring versions look close to the Springfield Trapdoor models but Numrich could tell you more there.

398 Ok, so I've got a serious question,.. why does everyone run to get a Chinese Lung Rot test if they're sick? What difference will it make? If you are sick for the cold, the flu, or the rot won't you treat all three the same way?

I've had the rot and no I wasn't tested but I can read and I know my own body and I lost 22 lbs during my illness which I've never done. And yes I lost my taste and not my smell, was lathargic for three days, was exhausted for a week and didn't have an appetite for a week so why would I need to test in order to know what to do?

Go to see doc who tells me to sit at home and wait to get sick enough to go to the hospital so they can not treat me until I'm so sick to be put on a ventilator or take vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, ivermectin, make myself eat, and move move move... hmm, let's see...

"7 Screaming Diz-Busters", "Mistress of the Salmon Salt", "Subhuman" (live version), "Astronomy", "The Vigil", "Black Blade", "Veteran of the Psychic Wars", and "Vengeance (the Pact)" all came out between 1972 and 1981.

From the appearance of the part, the firing pin probably relies on the mainspring to give it a kick and the pin is inertial. It is small enough to probably lack enough mass itself to set off a priming pin without the kick of a spring.

431 Orange Ent,
Spring loaded firing pins were uncommon in that era and that is why many of those old sporting firearms can fire if dropped. The springs for them are mounted in the front of the firing pin in order to provide resistance to inertial accidental discharge (dropping the shotgun smartly on a hard surface which can propel the firing pin without a front spring into the primer with enough force to set it off).

Positive firing pin blocks were uncommon outside of military arms in the 30's. It was considered an advanced feature and Colt marketed the Schwartz safety system for their 1911 about that time but dropped it because it was expensive and there was a lack of sales demanding the feature.

450 440 Good deal. Some firearms can be altered to take a spring in front of the firing pin but done incorrectly it can actually gum up and leave the firing pin in the forward position all of the time. Single shots, of course, are not at risk for runaway auto firing anyway and most designs usually are not at risk from slamfires either.

Most people of the time understood the limitations of their firearms and did not/could not sue due to court decisions of that era. Same as loading a Single Action Colt with five, not six rounds and carrying it with the hammer on an empty chamber.

Good luck with your project.

The only sacrosanct item in many states is government pensions. For the rubes that thought social security or other benefits were 'theirs', see Fleming v. Nestor (1960) where the court held that Congress may amend or alter social security payments as needed. This was an extension of the early 1937 Supreme Court decisions where Social Security was explicitly interpreted as not a trust fund financed via taxes but as spending to provide for General Welfare and as thus amendable by Congress to meet current crises and necessities of the present (Helvering v. Davis, 1937).

I have a theory I call the Dr. Huxtable theory. Back when the Bill Cosby show was on, every thing was perfect, and all problems were solved in the show, in 30 minutes, with Jokes being told.

Sitcoms were pretty much the opposite of real life. No one had to 'fix' themselves, things just 'worked out'... and someone ELSE, like the Fonze, would come in and fix things. Yet, that leaked into the mainstream, where THAT is supposed to be the norm.

Now, folks are unhappy and don't know that only THEY can make themselves happy... no one else can do it for you. So, they burn down their lives, because they don't know that THEY are the problem.

529 Can't speak very generally to the question, but there are cases where spirits "recipes" or final product do change over time.

Just recently, the most well known large brand of rum from Guyana (El Dorado) changed one of their flagship bottlings, the 15-year old. Far less sugar added (dosage) than in the previous formula, which changed to the new one starting in 2020. Might be other changes as well.

Interesting cold civil war going on in the rum world. Talking finer, sipping rums. Mostly in the English rum world (former British colonies or territories) - French rum world has mostly long had strict rules about additives, as have some but not all Spanish rum countries. Barbados is the epicenter, where the purists (for lack of a better word) are pushing to have a "geographic indication" (like a DOC in France or DOCG in Italy for wines) established that would restrict additives. Doesn't mean you couldn't make rum the way you choose, but the little GI label they come up with wouldn't go on that bottle.

This is a rough summary. But spirits recipes and rules (if any) do change. There were some changes in armagnac rules and terminology fairly recently, for example.

539 Whiskey by definition drifts from year to year. Distillers blend to maintain a brand. Weather differs and affects aging. Grain is different year to year. Also a bottle does not age but can go bad if the seal goes wrong. Temperature and light can degrade a spirit. Most brands are pretty good at consistency. I'm no whiskey snobb. Not rich enough. I do like a variety. Heard about a single malt rey I might want to try. Anyway makers mark and wild Turkey are my speed.

544 Aetius if you've been drinking the 15-yr you should notice the difference, if you've got one of the "new" versions (gold label liner, not red, and the Guyana Rum GI symbol on the back). Much drier, more wood, according to reviewers.

Others you might enjoy based on your comments would be Centenario 20 Fundacion (Costa Rica), or Plantation X0 20 (Barbados), very smooth blends. Same price range, maybe a bit less than El Dorado 15.

My early surprise favorite - Ron Alegro (DR), an 8-yr solera blend. Nobody's published hydrometer tests on it, but it doesn't taste/feel like much or any sugar added. Nice vanilla and spice. Highly recommend. And - $34, so well below every other name in this comment. Might be an exclusive of Total Booze, not sure. Value proposition for me is very high (only one where I've bought another bottle before finishing first one).

549 That should have been Ron Alegro XO, which is an 8-year solera.

As USNtakim pointed out, spirits are really based on agriculture, so maintaining consistency can be a challenge. Actually pretty impressive how many brands do that. The solera system used in Spanish style rums and of course sherry is an old but clever way of maintaining consistency.

(Spanish style rum refers to rum from former Spanish colonies or territories, which does overall have some similarities, just as rum from former British territories, or French, have their distinctive general style or techniques)

550 Blended Scotches have the (slight) advantage, of being made to taste the same, year to year to year.

Same with Canadian Whiskies.

Single Malt Scotches, much as with Single Batch Bourbons, face the greater challenges. Can they accomplish the (nearly same) flavor profile, in successive years?

Same challenge applies to the premium cigar makers. They have one HELLUVA challenge, to make the smokes for this and the next year and the next, much the same as this year and the last, and the last.

You know, last night on the ONT, some guy was going on about electric vehicle efficiency, and that certain Teslas get in the range of 100 mpg equivalent. That's true.

Gasoline engines are around 35% thermodynamic efficiency.

An electric vehicle, from battery to wheels pushing the car through gets much more than that. But let's look at the efficiency of the chain from prime mover power plant to charging the vehicle battery.

That charging process is 75% efficient for slow charge, and down to 50% for a fast charge. So there you go right there. Figure the most efficient prime mover we have, which is natural gas at 60% efficiency to turn the turbines. Now add 95% transmission efficiency, and etc.

That chain gets you down to 38.5% efficiency best case. Not much better than IC directly.

566 Great ONT MisHum.
The Honor Jones story is rife with "lessons" from our godless age with so many folks more interested in appearance than substance.
Sad for the kids, probably sad for the husband. Sure it takes a lot to bear, birth and raise young children. There is sacrifice involved. Our age constantly tells us what we "deserve" and encourages "self care" as opposed to duty. The latter idea is rarely celebrated it seems.
What a sad thing when people don't see that nothing worth having is achievable without effort and caring for others.

I ought to be irritated, but the story left me thinking that if she's focused as much on how to create a lovely life with her family, as she does crafting a sentence, she (and they) would be much better off.

And buy a dust buster for goodness sake! The idea of walking over crumbs makes my skin crawl. Yuck!

567 Jim that's one think I find kind of amazing - cigar makers keeping a flavor profile from year to year. Especially the more distinctive ones.

It's literally just dried, fermented, rolled leaves, with all of the vagaries of weather and agi-ri-culture determining what kind of crop you get each year.

And AFAIK in most cases there are limits to blending options to replicate particular profiles. Many spirits would be easier to blend. If Cameroon wrapper has a disastrous crop, there's really no substitute. And on and on.

A thorium nuclear reactor can achieve around 45% thermodynamic efficiency, for the technology that would be reasonably economic. (The higher the temperature you can operate at, the better the efficiency you can get, but higher temperatures put more stress on materials, etc, etc).

I'm a big proponent of thorium fuel cycle reactors. I'm not a nut, like some proponents are, but it would be a damn good way to solve our energy needs for the next couple hundred years or so.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 05, 2022 02:17 AM (Mzdiz)

573 Let me be clear! I do not disdain blends because they are blends. I disdain them individually if I do not like the way they taste, just as I do single malts. (Well, back when I drank.) I think blends have acquired their bottom-shelf reputation in part because bottom-shelf scotch is often a blend of whatever is leftover from various distilleries and blended by a reseller. There are some fantastic blends of great single malts; it's an art. Dewar's 12 is eminently drinkable. It seems to me that "single malt" appeals to pretentious people simply based on the words, and the sound of the words, themselves. They really don't know what they're drinking sans the label.

the original domestic terrorist. I have 3 words for his departure --

Well, buh-bye. Live shortly and suffer.

577 Aetius there are several online sites where you can at least get general intel about different rum bottlings. Many of the more serious bloggers now drink stuff from boutique limited distributions or rum clubs - stuff we'll never see in a store - but some of them do drink normal stuff too.

One commenter-driven site is rumratings.com. Like many such sites you have to get a feel for the approach of certain people posting their reviews. But you can get a sense of where a rum fits in the spectrum, and the site is dominated by people who prefer more "accessible" styles and don't mind sweetness.

Either Santa Teresa 1796 (Venezuela) or Flor de Cana 18 (Nicaragua) are next on my list. Neither sweetened, but also neither bourbon-like oaky styles such as now command all the worship and hubbub (FourSquare in Barbados, for example).

I'm just thinking about all the money the federal govt has blown on shit over the last 20 years. A fraction of that could have been used to put a thorium, or hell traditional nuclear "upgrade" in place.

If you want electric vehicles, you're gonna need significant upgrades in generation an transmission capacity. I mean big time. There may be something to a H2 fuel cell type of electric power plant. Use massive amounts of electricity to hydrolysize water to get your H2. Burn it back to water in the fuel cells.

Something like that would work, but you're gonna need a shit ton of electric generation and transmission capacity. Nuclear is the only way you're gonna get that.

580 "district heating"

There is a neighborhood in Boise heated with a local geothermal source.

Both Seattle and Portland used to have district heating downtown, using a downtown power plant to provide the heat.

The use of district heating in Russia leads to another great Russian tradition: the practice of shutting down the heat and hot water for a week or two in mid-summer to do maintenance on the system. If you want hot water, you boil it on the stove, or go to friends in a different neighborhood (they rotate the shutdown around the city's neighborhoods in accordance with an announced schedule).

The big problem with thorium, which I have not seen addressed, is that there are few places in the world where it can be commercially mined. Its chemistry is such that thorium minerals mainly occur as tiny scattered grains in vast masses of granite. Thorium is usually mined by placer-mining certain beach sands in India for the mineral monazite. Uranium, on the other hand, has the happy quality of combining readily with other elements to form concentrated deposits of uranium minerals, either in veins from hydrothermal fluids, or as a cement in buried sandstones. It can be precipitated out of groundwater by the reducing action or rotting organic material. Very convenient. North America has vast supplies.

I respect Bobby Rush for one thing and one thing only: he's the only guy to kick Barack Obama's ass in an election.

Barack tried to take Bobby's Congressional seat, and Bobby accurately characterized Obama as a half-white, Ivy League, carpetbagger.

Being a hardcore cigar fan from about 1990, I'll just put it like this. Many favorites have disappeared, due to crop failure, manufacturing/distribution f-ups, and such.
The worst voids, due to industry consolidations.

One most horrid, the loss of the old Ramon Allones brand. Smoke billowing so creamy and smooth, it was like a Bailey's Irish Creme cigar. Perfect for a hot-tub smoke, nothing but relaxation and sensation. Then, General or Consolidated bought the brand, and now it's just "meh".

"Meh" is easy on the mass marketing scale. A Bailey's Irish Creme smooth cigar though? You'd have to enjoy one to begin to understand.

You'd like a molasses-based rum from Reunion, which being French would be expected to have only agricole (sugar cane juice-based) bottlings? We have that.

Fiji? The Philippines? Guatemala? Martinique? I expect to be trying different rums for a long time.

595 ARC in Armenia and Georgia I mostly enjoyed the semi-permanent state of no power or water, summer or winter. But that was more of a tradition started by the Azeri-Armenia war, or the Georgian civil war.

Russia was an energy-rich paradise buy comparison. Local airlines departing Tbilisi or Yerevan would quickly land in Vladikavkaz, just across the RF border, to fuel up, before proceeding to western Europe.

(Vladikavkaz, then Ordzhonikidze, high-water mark of the Wehrmacht in their failed attempt to invade the south Caucasus region)

As I understand it, thorium reactors cannot 'runaway'. No core meltdowns. No 3 Mile Island or Chernobyl scenarios. As to supply issues, we can probably breed the fuel from conventional reactors.

I like it on balance, but I'll take any nuclear.

600 AOP bringing the knowledge on thorium, which I recall him doing in an earlier discussion.

Without going into detail, I'd bet $20 - maybe more - that the best energy "strategy" would be ..... return to a rational, reality-based one, like we had until recently.

Coal, gas, nukes, hydro for power. Petroleum for most transportation. It is obvious we have super-ample supplies of all these, sufficient to fuel (heh) prosperity for a very long time.

I'm guessing about 80% of my adult drinking usually revolved around something music. Gigs, after parties, music parties, etc. People hand you booze and you just don't ask. Chicks hand you booze and you really...really don't ask. I learned to just drink any brown booze that was handed to me, and I got conditioned to mix drinks with no ill effects. I can jump from wine, to beer, to brown booze, etc. No clear booze though, fuck that, it tastes like hospital. I think that would rust my cast iron stomach. lol

Coal contains thorium in some small amount. I've seen proposals for extracting it from coal ash. You can get uranium for coal ash as well, but thorium is more abundant.

Burn coal for power, then extract thorium from the ash.
