  • Programmer encounters paperwork, film at eleven. (Hacker News)

Welcome to the real world, kid. Here's a nickel.

Going through this right now at my day job, but I've been there multiple times before so I know this too shall pass, just like a kidney stone.

Tech News

March

  • On March 1, AMD's Genoa server chips would have stuff unless they wouldn't - now pretty much all confirmed by updates to the Linux kernel to support said stuff, WASM everywhere - except it went pretty much nowhere, Alexa had 90,000 friends skills, don't plug your Macbook into a USB-C dock, and Microsoft had a patch for that horrifying NTFS bug.

  • On March 2, Intel launched their 670p before the 665p even really reached store shelves, no USB-C PD for you, a Pi Pico carrier board with HDMI in software, fried rice was off, and fuck Apple yet again.

  • On March 3, lots more details on how the Pi Pico generates HDMI signals in software, the Threadripper Pro hit retail, an AMD motherboard with Thunderbolt 4, the Radeon 6700XT arrived, and the US Navy was convicted of piracy.

  • On March 4, CircuitPython was coming to town, SpaceX's Starship SN10 test flight was a complete succ... oh dear, Mozilla had concerns about India probably because they're racist, 117 patches to Grub on the wall, 117 patches to Grub, a lightweight UI toolkit with a 1.3GB SDK, and ladies and gentlemen please stand for the national anthem.

  • On March 5, bring your own damn client, eBay banned sales of the six Dr Seuss books removed from publication because fuck you that's why, HTTPWTF, ceci n'est pas une pomme, Google gave your browser cancer, and Kiara from Hololive got her shadowban lifted whereupon YouTube deleted her last two months of content because fuck you that's why.

  • On March 6, Rocket Lake accidentally arrived and was okay I guess (the Rocket Lake laptop chips came later and are actually pretty good), iMac Pro delenda est, and 30,000 Exchange servers got hacked.

  • On March 7, Seagate was planning a 100TB hard drive, Solasta: Crown of the Magister was an upcoming D&D game shortly before D&D got woke and went broke - but I'll take a look at it now as it has now released and has a ton of positive reviews, everything you never wanted to know about FFMPEG, and the Ballad of Little Boolean Bobby Drop Tables True.

  • On March 8, Humble had a Bundle, Hynix shipped 18GB 6400Mbps LPDDR5, there was no serverless, there was just nobody else's servers, how quickly we forget, Dell's XPS 15 still lacked the Four Essential Keys, Google killed Google Pay and replaced it with Google Pay, yes, really and freak bread accidents.

  • On March 9, Epyc Milan was about to launch - and did, Lunar Lake popped up in Linux kernel patches, Ice Lake Xeons leaked, Google's UI sucks - probably deliberately, and the most efficient way to solve linear equations turned out to be guesswork.

  • On March 10, Samsung announced the 980 Nothing edition, this was not the bear you were looking for, and there was an RCE in Git.

  • On March 11, the Xiaomi Mi 11 was a flagship phone priced like a flagship phone, Epic Games sued Apple and Google again, the MGM lion was a paper tiger, and you really shouldn't have been browsing North Korean websites in the first place.

  • On March 12, our main MongoDB cluster started to go to pieces at my day job - a clear sign of how the year would proceed, the Razer Blade 15 generally sucked, Alder Lake was going to have a lot of PCIe lanes, and looking inside Cooper Lake.

  • On March 13, Rocket Lake was huge, Stronghold Warlords was more Stronghold than Warlords, SQLite 3.35 could drop columns, there were no adults at Google, and we received a warning and failed to recognise it when OVH's SGB2 datacenter burned to the ground.

And Hololive EN Gen 1 celebrated their halfiversary.

Prism Gen 3, Mooyu, and Nymroot all just celebrated their respective halfiversaries. March was a long long time ago.

  • On March 14, Apple forced Crabhouse - a game in which you made a house for crabs - to change its name because it might mislead people, threads are better, anyhting mandatory was forbidden, and Apple wisely killed the HomePod.

  • On March 15, Epyc Milan was here, Nvidia hacked its own drivers, WeLeakInfo did, GitLab fell over, and the LG Gram 17 was a definite if expensive maybe.

On March 16, India was confused but had the right spirit, the new USPS truck looked dumb, Azure Active Directory fell over and not for the last time, and a hidden Epyc Milan gem.

  • On March 17, Asus showed off a new Thunderbolt 4 expansion card that only worked on motherboards designed specifically with that card in mind making it entirely useless, Rocket Lake actually launched officially after accidenteally leaking out to retail over a week earlier, Apple took up the Google challenge of terrible UI design, and we discovered zombie rap electroswing fusion.

  • On March 18, the 6700XT reached reviewers and was somewhere between pretty good and amazing depending on stuff, HP spileld the a lake of beans, which one was Van Gogh again, building SMB into the Linux kernel was a bad idea, YouTube only had your back inasmuch as they used it for target practice, and Shapecatcher was Shazam for Unicode.

  • On March 19, AMD did not artificially limit crypto mining performance, AWS added Lambda to S3 for and actually useful, 19 antiviri classed uTorrent as malware, and Russia threatened to ban Twitter but still hasn't followed through.

  • On March 20, learn science, go to jail, the PCIe 6.0 spec reached a final draft, interrupts updated, Victoria University deleted every file on every PC on their network, and alkalized water was dangerous bullshit.

  • On March 21, we got our Pi Picos onto the internet, Asus launched their version of Intel's useless DG1, Alder Lake was going to bring DDR5, PCIe 5, and more fast, Nividia's unhackable rate limited got hacked again, the Surface Duo could double as a 2D 3DS, and Mini-Zork II was released for the Commodore 64.

  • On March 22, the 32 core 3970X was 75% of a 64 core 3990X because TDP is a thing, the 6700 non-XT leaked but never showed up, fuck systemd, the worst possible case, Backblaze accidentally leaked all yourfilenames to Facebook, and it was millions of spiders.

  • On March 23, one of the MongoDB nodes at my day job simply dropped dead, a sign of things to come, I set myself up with a Minecraft server, a sign of things not to come, Crystal hit 1.0, MangaDex went very thoroughly offline, and just Windows things.

  • On March 24, sorr folks, canal's closed - camel out frount should've told ya, Intel is back, baby, said Intel, Google remove ClearURL because fuck you that's why, Reddit hired a known associate of rapists and paedophiles, tried to scrub all mention of her from the site, and then fired her in the space of 24 hours, and then they came for RMS and the FSF, and Cream of Bat Soup or Anthrax Leprosy Pi?

  • On March 25, Samsung sampled 512GB DDR5 modules, Genshin Impact crossed the billion dollar mark, were you pondering what I was pondering*, and the 11700K was a waste of sand.

    * I think so, Brain, but where would we find five hundred gallons of lime jello and a polo pony at this time of night?

  • On March 26, Qualcomm announced the 780G, with unspeicifed Qualcomm CPU cores because you don't need to know, that ship was still stick, two gigauwus per second, the $69 million 404, and SpaceX dusted itself off and tried again.

  • On March 27, it was the stupid questioning the stupid in DC, which Epyc CPU is right for Factorio, and in Minecraft I found diamonds before sheep.

  • On March 28, Dave arrived and was loaded up with the backups from the deceased Theodore, I found sheep, pigs, cows, and chickens, testing the NUC 11 as a tiny server, and Haachama's content returned, though not Haachama herself.

  • On March 29, Haachama herself returned, there were no Nvidia cards in Australia, that ship got unstuck, I repaired that 12TB MongoDB cluster - or so I thought, octal considered harmful, PHP got hacked, and I had every colour except brown.

  • On March 30, an RTX 3060 for ants, mining Bitcoin on a Game Boy, the database I just repaired was still work - spoke too soon, we unleashed the Pigz, and there were 30 malicious Docker images on Docker Hbu - downloaded a combined 20 million times.

  • On March 31, Intel's 11900K was an embarrassment, we found out what mongod --repair did (not much), Arm announced Armv9, Dimgrey Cavefish leaked, TSMC outlined its plans for 4nm, and we didn't yet know the full story of the Ubiquiti hack.

Speaking of Google, have you heard of their quantum computer woes? They were working on one, and came with an error correcting mechanism, which is critical to proper function.

But that error correcting system would blow up every ten minutes or so. Crash. ERROR!

Turns out it was cosmic rays and other sources of natural background radiation. That's a show stopper for quantum computing right there. A stray cosmic ray can come hit, and just blow the whole thing up.

And it appears to be a real showstopper for further development.

I LOL'd at this. I'm getting very mean, I think.

15 That thread about the startup dude trying to figure out why he can't just implement a feature on a (likely) validated system is hilarious. I often have this same mentality at my company but I've come to understand why bureaucratic nonsense exists.

Even after multiple levels of oversight and regression testing, people break sh*t at my company with their "feature implementation requests". For example, our CISO decided to just implement a rather blanket outbound firewall rule that ended up breaking our Axway/AS2 link to a very important client who we were transmitting drug safety data to. Yeah that was a great meeting where my boss basically recited to network security all of our SOP's that were supposed to stop something like this from happening - but were apparently ignored.

I used one today; they're like pregnancy tests in that you do a nose swab, put it in a little hole and 15 minutes later you get a red stripe if it thinks you have the coof. Also like pregnancy tests, not sure that I'd want to make any high-value decisions on the results but it's at least one data point in figuring out why I'm not feeling too great this week.

49 Lost my best friend today. His name was Mason and he was a 9.5 year old golden retriever. Was the bestest, goodest boy you've ever seen. We got back from vacation and picked him and his younger brother up from the kennel Sunday... Mason had a bit of a cough. Took him to the vet yesterday where they diagnosed it as an upper respiratory infection and sent us home with antibiotics.

This morning, after checking on him not 30 minutes prior, I found him unresponsive. He's gone. Vet thinks it was a bleeding tumor in his lungs.

To tie it back to the tech thread - as evil as Google is, I've been up since around midnight going through my google photos and finding all of his pictures. I've spent like $300 on canvas print orders ...

It's one of the 3 occasions that a man is allowed to cry and boy have I been.

Sorry, this is just another method of dealing with the grief.

51 There are only a few cats around these days. Couple of them are known to be pets. Couple others, doubtful they're pets.

And then there's this one that is friendly toward me, always trying to get in the house. I think may have been dumped but not sure. Maybe is someone's outdoor-only pet but he's here more often than not. Have asked around.

Tomorrow, I'm going to trick kitty into a carrier and take to vet to be scanned. If not chipped, I will adopt him, or at least pay for his rabies and distemper shots.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 22, 2021 04:48 AM (AutcU)

53 The bad news is, while I fully expect all the symptoms to clear up long before I go off holiday the company probably won't let me back in the building until I go to an actual doctor for another test and written statement that I'm healthy. Irritating, but it is what it is and isolating actual sick people is a lot more sensible than ermagerd face diapers and monthly booster shots forever.

One thing I have wondered for a while (since we knew the virus was not quite the death sentence it has been made out to be) is how would people react to an actual deadly pandemic? Something on the order of one of the many smallpox pandemics or spanish flu. Set aside something like the Black Death of the 1300s because that really is end of the world kind of death numbers.

Does the relative mildness of the disease actually allow people to stay in this fantasy world and completely distort their risk-benefit calculations? Is part of the reaction we are seeing because people at least subconsciously do not actually believe that their life could end at any moment from this thing? Certainly the actions of the elites is that they do not really perceive it as a threat.

Fauci is a soulless monster. Yes, I've read of his experimentation on children, outsourcing the torture of beagles, and outsourcing gain of function research.

It is indicative how far this country has fallen that he still has a job and isn't in jail awaiting trial.

I have never heard of it. For my part, I'd put forward "Thidwick, the Big-Hearted Moose", in which Thidwick's kindness is taken advantage of by all manner of idlers, revelers, spongers, and ne'er do wells until, in extremis, he discovers the way to cast off his burden of what had become life threatening parasites.

79 Morning, folk! First day of my Xmas break. why am I up early? To work out, then run to the 'burbs for breakfast and to have the Buick's blood changed and shoes swapped around. (Oil change and tire rotation) I can hit the grocery on the way back home, have a nap, and then? Who knows? Got to wrap some presents, and keep from opening the Peterson pipe I bought for myself. I want to wait until Friday or Saturday.

Temp is 46 F. now at 4 am, rising to 62 this p.m. And it'll be 80 on Saturday. Hard to work up a Christmas spirit when the reindeer are sitting around sweating.

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat wants his breakfast. I can tell; he's actually pacing along with me when I go into the kitchen to refill my coffee. This is a good sign, that he's moving so much (for him right now).

Posted by: Colin at December 22, 2021 05:09 AM

Transmittable diseases have a reproduction value (usually portrayed as R= ) that indicates how many people will become subsequently infected infected per person. Classic Covid had an R value of about 1.3. Delta variant an R value of over two, iirc, while omicron has an R value of higher then 4.

So the sequence of omicron infection is 1, 4, 16, 64, 256, etc...

If that rate were to occur each an every day in two weeks time the number is over 67 million. On the 15th day you have a number just shy of the entire population of the USA.

90 Morning!

Cold/flu whatever is calming down. It started Monday night with a bad sore throat that came on very quickly. I'm unjabbed, the wife is jabbed, and all I can think is I will not hear the end of this if.....

So, I take some Tylenol extra, some extra D's, zinc, quercetin. Slept like a log, but the sore throat, and plugged nose was still with me yesterday. I said, fark it, I don't want to screw up Christmas for my wife, bit the bullet and had my first dose of pony paste. A little bitter but I've had worse tasting medicines.
Woke up this morning, sore throat is gone, nose is a little athletic, feeling better. Will do at least one more pony paste a little later.

You're witnessing natural selection, survival of the fittest (the most reproductively fit, that is) in almost real time with Moronic. Moronic is an "escape mutant", selected to escape the sub-optimal (piss poor, actually) "immunity" conferred by the vaccines.

It is the most fit, and outcompetes delta.

God has apparently seen fit to spare us from our stupidity of escape mutant promoting leaky vaccines, and conferred very low virulence on this escape mutant, Moronic. It's little more than a mild cold.

It's ripping through like shit through a goose, blowing away all other variants. It's like a transmissible vaccine, actually.

110 In total fairness to Turnip Boy I may understand where they're coming from re: testing kits. Frontline providers have told me that they're wasting a lot of time on paperwork as they, various insurers and Uncle Sam haggle over who foots the bill and this is the main reason that getting a "rapid" test at a clinic takes forever and a day. So this may be a case where the government does need to step in and get shit done, but it would probably have been better handled at the county level.

There's also a big open question about whether the DIY antigen tests are sufficiently accurate, so they may well wind up squandering a bunch of money on test kits that corporate frenz and such don't consider to be valid results.

112 I mentioned this yesterday. My boss, who is apparently terrified of the coof (he says he's "lost" 5 family members and friends to it), went for his booster shot on Monday. Yesterday he told us he wasn't coming in; the effects of his booster were pretty bad. (Schadenfreude point 1)

One of our staff commiserated with him, but added, "It's good that you got the booster." (Headdesk)

Then another coworker, who'd been tested recently, turned up positive for Moronic. Contact Tracing (the new Gestapo) ordered him to go home and isolate, and -- as he put it -- will come hose down his office. (Schadenfreude point 2) I'd have demanded a second test, but he meekly obeyed.

I'm not expressing glee at their being sick, however mildly. I'm amused that these 3, who all have PhDs and could be presumed to be at least a bit above average in IQ, are so brainwashed by all this.

My next door neighbor contracted covid and died of a brain aneurysm, which I suppose is related to blood pressure spike. That's why I reached for the sildenafil citrate right off the bat. He was mid 80's and in poor shape already.

I think it should be in everyone's home as backup medicine. The dosage is known, it's been around for decades and it works for blood pressure in both men and women. When my wife contracted covid I mixed her up a low dose cut with water and she sipped it throughout the day and monitored her BP continuously.

If I called my employer and told hem that I'm sick and won't coming to work today, they will require two passing COVID tests administered on-site by their own staff in order to return to work. If it tests positive, they'll gladly accept that for a 10-day unpaid quarantine period. But a negative test is useless. The free at-home test is a huge waste of resources.

2 passed and I wouldn't wish that pain on an enemy. (except for a karen, a covidiot, a media fabulist, a leftist, a Democrat, Antifa, BLM (you get the idea) and for sure Hillary Clinton and Nasty Pelosi).

I had a 3rd one that did NOT pass. Very painful and I almost dies from septicemia. Had to have an emergency operation. Oh and I also had an operation to remove one cause it was way too big and the machines could see that so they took it out. It was almost as big as the kidney itself. A few more months and I would've lost the kidney.

So lots of fun. Nothing to laugh at. Well NOW it's okay. It did prepare me well for getting old and having arthritis. Really really looking hard for that silver lining.

Just had a weird but satisfying dream where I was having problems with my smart phone and was attempting to correct them when some young punk grabbed it and offered ro help by first making its viewable screen smaller. As he was smirking as he said that, I grabbed one of his index fingers and threatened to break it if he made one more move to "help". I told him that I was through with smart asses like him maliciously messing up settings on my devices, that I was having none of it and give me back the smart phone.

Funny thing is, I never turn over my devices to anyone to adjust their settings. But I was deriving great satisfaction from the possibility of inflicting pain on a wise ass.

It could have been dealt with for probably about 1% of the cost by adopting precaution commensurate with the threat and protecting the vulnerable,. But that would have meant no massive speeding bills, free shit, petty tyranny and lots and lot lots of heroes. I'm a little surprised the country isn't just a pile of smoldering ruins after what its been been put through.

236 We went to the moon with no more computing power than a TRS-80 (or there abouts) and now 50 years later we still can't get our machines to play nice.

It's the humans in the repair stream. Either the testers or the programmers. There are just too many possible combinations of periperals, operating systems, mother boards, memory etc. etc.

You think they would come up with something that can find out what's running and deal with these issues.

Back when I did some minor programming I was never afraid about tinkering with my system. Built a couple for myself. Except for worrying about static electricity blowing a transistor or three; I had no worries. Easy peasy. Now I shudder every time I have to take the cover off to do a clone of my primary hard drive. (I know, I know; why it's a long story) I've got a hot swap plug in deally but I can't do that with this old computer so I would have to turn it on after rebooting and set the bios so it can see the new drive. And that's no big deal but it's not enough of a time saver for me to install the swapping insert. 1st world problems. Meanwhile by win 10 laptop I haven't booted up in a year. Cause reasons.

These assholes are just viruses. They infiltrate, weaken, and eventually kill, and the more mystically minded of us won't even believe you when you tell them they're doing it,
because they can't seem them with the naked eye.

Her Majesty worked with our handler's team last weekend at the AKC National in Orlando and several of them came down sick. The spot tests said they were positive so HM dutifully reported it to the AKC, who requested she get tested even though she feels fine.

After chasing around, no one around here has on-site testing except after long wait or by appointment. It cost me $25 to buy a home test kit. Test came up negative. Then the people she worked with said they had on-site tests and came up negative. Time, effort and money wasted.

Just a thought - if most of the Classic Covid cases were overweight or morbidly obese, they are the group most likely to have blood pressure issues. If part of the healing process is opening up the veins and arteries to allow the 'housekeeping crew' to identify, disable, and carry away the virus, why aren't blood pressure medications one of the first avenues of attack?

I know - 'protocol' which can not be deviated from without risk of lose of medical license. It's sad, and now deadly.

Bingo. Lockdowns, masks, distancing, area disinfection, etc. have all done precisely dick in terms of infection control. They've had massive downsides and no upsides whatsoever. The statistical analysis, in terms of overall overage or even controlled for as many dimensions as people have thought of, show no difference. None of it worked. None.

Common sense, though, does work. Keep your hands clean and stay home if you're sick. Those are good ideas generally.
