Daily Tech News 13 December 2021

Top Story

  • Hmm. Remarkably little news today. Nothing new has exploded and ruined the lives of sysadmins around the globe. I think everyone is sleeping off the chaos of last week.

    I wish I was.

  • Looks like that Log4j vulnerability first surfaced on December 1, a full week before anyone noticed. (ZDNet)

The idiot script kiddies using every server they can breach to mine crypto actually serve a useful purpose, in the same way that... 404 Analogy not found. In the same way that Billy the mailboy showing up to work with a thousand bucks worth of bling alerts you to audit your system before Svetlana from accounts payable disappears with a couple of mill.

Tech News

  • Little JNDI Tables.

A researcher hacked Apple - just a little bit - simply by changing the name of his iOS device. The logs show that Apple's servers dialed out to his research server when his connection was logged, which would have let him run arbitrary code within Apple's datacenter.

That's how bad this was. That's how easy it was to exploit. And it was everywhere.

It could be that Apple's logging servers are isolated and can't do anything, but they're not as isolated as Cloudflare's, which were configured so they couldn't dial out at all.

  • On the upside, there's this.

Someone exploited a bug in a logging library to make a Minecraft server run Doom.

  • New keyboard arrived. Accidental jellybeans too. Desktop shelving is now due next Monday rather than today, but whatever. The second Dell laptop is now stuck in between "shipped" and "on its way" - I think systems bound for Australia are assembled in Singapore, so there's a period where they go into stealth mode where they've been shipped from the factory but tracking just doesn't update.

Won't have time to do anything with it this week anyway.

I've worked out, gotten cleaned up, and am devouring breakfast. Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat has had his wet food with pain pill. He's curled near my feet by the couch and has more than once tried to greet me at the door, a big effort for a codger cat. I'm having trouble finding his Rx food, and will have to call the vet this morning to see if they know where I can look -- Petco online seems to be out as well as the local stores. Or if there is some other food I can substitute temporarily.

"The horse, the saddle, the man" is the old cavalry expression we use. And when HM is traveling, it's exactly the case. Doesn't make any difference how late she pulls in to wherever, the dogs are exercised and fed first, the RV is set up with power and water and the AC turned on and only then can HM sit down and have something to eat.

How can it be right that a publicly owned and publicly funded institution - the NHS decides what is and is not a priority. Why is a mum who may have cancer be less important than a healthy 20something getting a jab. When did the NHS become the master & us it's owners the servant?

118 I woke up with a crazy idea:

"Critical Evil Theory"

Stipulate the absurd systems of Historical Materialism and Critical Theory... but apply that hermeneutic to the classes of "Evil" and "Good" rather than economic class, race, gender, etc.

The Evil have usurped power and the means of production illegitimately. The Evil oppress the Good for their own advancement. The Evil have ensconced themselves in a position of power over which the Good have no means to free themselves so long as they only resort to methods they find morally acceptable (i.e. their "class consciousness" precludes the subversion and violent overthrow of their masters).

I know it's basically a tautology on its surface... but i'm not awake enough to really think seriously about it yet.

The NHS 1) employs more people and 2) kills more people than the UK armed forces.

In summary: there is no benefit for your children or your family to be vaccinating your children against the small risks of the virus, given the known health risks of the vaccine that as a parent, you and your children may have to live with for the rest of their lives. The risk/benefit analysis isn't even close. As a parent and grandparent, my recommendation to you is to resist and fight to protect your children.

I like it. More truthful. I hate, hate, hate being categorized by 'class', esp.

We all know righteous folk from every income strata. Evil folk, too. To lump them (the good, the evil) altogether with the mighty $$ as category distinction neuters the righteous.

It's why they do it. My 'goodnesss' is merely a result of the wicked rich lording it over me, according to them.

My 'goodness' is actually a result of the Lord lording it over me. A distinction they cannot fathom, most of them.

Then the schools saw all the $$$ to be made suckering people who don't really belong in school getting pseudo-degrees in made up out of whole cloth useless "degrees". And turning out deeply defective socialists who want to burn down your town for "justice".
