Many bats die at wind turbines when colliding with the spinning blades. Currently it is unclear whether all age cohorts or sexes are equally vulnerable. A comparison of age, sex and geographic origin of Nathusius' pipistrelles killed at wind turbines and living conspecifics from nearby populations now reveals that juveniles are killed more frequently than adults compared to their proportion in local populations. Females are killed more frequently than males -- yet in line with their higher proportion in local populations. The high number of killed females and the elevated vulnerability of juveniles may have a negative effect on the long-term survival of populations, indicating that the current practice of wind energy production may not be ecologically sustainable. Honest - I tried to read it without humor but alas, failed as I am in possession of only a juvenile mind. The shooting into bars thing apparently is one of the latest gang initiation rites. The younger members of the various C'bus gangs will be driven past the front of some of the High St. bars, fire blindly into them and then speed off. Nothing on the news that I can confirm but two families I know of have had their kids leave school for good due to that reason alone.

Met a nice couple upon moving to North Idaho. Both had nice Harleys out in front of the deli/laundromat.
I noticed a somewhat strange chained device on one of his handlebars. I asked him about it. He explained that he had had a similar experience to you. I think a thrown beer can from the car was involved. And it was something he used as a weapon. Now I do not recommend assaulting 4 wheeled vehicles when riding a motorcycle. In fact I think it is a very dangerous idea.

Re: the food dumpster. Lived with that on my last tour in Germany. Apt bldg leased from Germans, so we had to follow the local rules. There were several dumpster for waste food stuff. Not bagged (I am thinking the rules will be the same in CA, as bagging it will make it less "recyclable").
What a breeding ground for flies! 1 inch layer of maggots at the bottom after dumping each week. And the smell!
I looked at the Army housing regs and saw I was not prohibited from dumping a cup or so of malathion and another cup of good old Chlorox in a couple times a month...

Being an E-4, we lived off post. Recycling was already a big thing in Germany in 1990. Right down to cardboard, paper, plastic, green glass, clear glass, and brown glass (yes, apparently there is a difference. We were to dispose of other trash into a chute. One day the maintenance man rang our doorbell and lectured us with his mixture of English and German on all the garbage that was supposed to be recyclable.
We started dumping bags of garbage into the dumpsters on post. Amurca, fuck yeah!

What has happened is that venture capital financed by fed easy bux has taken over tech. The idea is to get rich by picking the next big thing like Google or Amazon. Musk got on the elevator at the right time with proven successes at other tech companies and went into all electric autos when no one else thought it worth noting. Subsidies and mandates made him wealthy which led to Space which leads to various side ventures like the Boring Company making tunnels.

one fun fact is that Texas actually has Two "Supreme Courts" - the official Supreme Court only hears Civil Cases - lawsuits, etc. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is Supreme for all Criminal Cases.
Judges on both courts have to run for election every 6 years.

The way that retailers get fantastic growth is by stiffing their vendors. The idea is that you get fabulous growth by selling an item today and paying your vendors for it in 90-120 days. Essentially, you are borrowing from the vendors to finance your business--in a mature market like books--Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc. had already killed the small booksellers by doing their own variation of that so big and small publishers were ready for a new player that turned out to be Amazon. Bezos though is now pissing off his big vendors and small ones by selling cheap Chinese clones for a lot of it that compete with existing brands. And selling knockoffs.
The main innovation is that mass shipping innovations by UPS and Fedex and cleverly originally using the Post office for us taxpayer subsidized China to US shipping made the system work along with massive computing power. That allowed him enough profit and capital to build delivery services of his own eventually while cutting them out in major metro areas. His cloud networking also makes a pretty big chunk of Amazon earnings.

Scotty Kilmer is a bit of a lunatic on YT. He is a car mechanic. And he is pretty funny. Often he presents 20-30 minute reviews of something automotive. That are very well done.
The other day he reviewed electric cars. One thing that was interesting. I guess in the 90s? Sometime. The government partnered with Ford, GM and Mercedes to make electric cars. They specifically excluded Honda and Toyota.
Guess who made the first electric cars?* Honda(Insight?) and Toyota(Prius). Very minor point of his video. But interesting to me.
*He actually has another long video explaining that Edison and Ford actually partnered to make electric cars? But that the batteries could not be recharged, or not easily recharged, so gasoline crushed that effort.

Believe it or not, little things like that (and posture) do make it possible to spot veterans. Here's another: I was watching the opening scene of Reservoir Dogs the other day, which is one of the kick ass openings of all time, but what stood out to me was that the dogs were all out of step. I don't know if it would even be possible for a group of veterans to walk that out of step if they tried.

In the tent 18 degress F, wind 20mph, sleet. Coleman lantern keeping things not as cold - step outside for a break and across the way is a big FMC, curtains open and the fellow, in shorts, feet propped on the table as his wife brings him a beer and club sandwich.

We had 12 man canvas tents at Camp Bullis, TX (a U.S. Army installation), for Air Base Ground Defense I & II training. Winter of 1976 was (for then) at or near record cold temps. The oil-fired stove worked wonders, except that the Army specified that they be shut down at lights out, for fire prevention reasons.
Yep. Freezin' cold in the tent, most every morning. We started with a "fair" rotation on the roster for stove-starting in the morning, but that soon devolved to the least squared-away Airman in the tent. Didn't last though. He could, and did start the stove like a champ for a week, ten days or so. But, he'd constantly fall out on any kind of a march. And forget about a march humpin' a ruck. Poor kid was done in a quarter mile or so. They sectioned him out on an Administrative Discharge, soon after.
But. Cold tent. Done my last of those, thankyouverymuch.

It will be a busy week for Her Majesty as well. Three days of all-breed shows, AKC National Owner-Handled Series finals on Friday and the AKC National Championship on Saturday. She'll have meetings to attend as the AKC Delegate for our parent breed club and she may have to serve as a ring steward on Sunday.
We're just in it to try for the breed wins. These are shows for the big boys in town, so even if we get past the breed, group placements are very unlikely.

Not as rare as you think. Clutch gets hot, heats the clutch shell, glue says fuck it. Fixed a lot of those over the years. You can epoxy the magnets back on, but they gotta go back exactly as they came out with the polarities right. A lot of time the magnets chip and crack, and then you're opening your ass for a new clutch drum, $3-400.

Trivia. The CX-500 was pretty much 1/3 of a Honda Formula One racing engine in the late 1970s era. Mine was a 1978 model, and they "cured" the chain adjustment block malf in the 1980 model. Final year for 'em was the 1983, bumped to a 650cc displacement, lowering highway revs just enough to enjoy. And then, no more.
Think, water cooled Moto-Guzzi, in terms of general layout. But the vee-valley cam, tiny pushrod, forked follower, four-OHV valve engine had a 5,500 RPM redline, coming fully onto the cam at about 3,000 Rs. At which point, hang on. You're not steering it now, it's steering you.

I did the removal, and put the engine in the trunk of the Pontiac Sunfire, and drove it the 1/2 mile to the dealer. Back then, I was had not the skills at the wrench that I have, now. CX-500 was a neat bike, but only the later Honda Silverwing gave it a long enough swingarm to cure it's ring/pinion "jacking" ass-lifting under power.

Maybe, usually you just do the internal clutch adjustment and primary chain adjustment when you do an oil change. You can't run the clutch adjustment too tight, or else you'll waste the throw out bearing, and its a small bearing to start with. It needs to have a small bit of play. Most guys fuck up and never do the internal adjustment, and always play around with just the cable adjustment itself, and thats not how you do it.

Well its not like the harley twin cam with the retarded chain driven balance shafts. When those tensioners go you have to remove the engine and then split the engine cases to get to them. The rubber mountain engines don't have those, but the solid mounted engines do. Somebody shit the bed on that design.

And right behind you, I'd tear down a CX-500 engine, and you'd laugh your ass off at mine.
But you'd also be impressed. The CX 500/650 engines were some of the most impressive HP/RPM per engine pound and CC displacement of their time. 1/3 of a Formula One design has it's advantages, and it's deficits, too. Bike styiin' was cool, too. Instantly adaptable to Euro/Brit Cafe Racer resto mods, with not much more than stripping to minimums, and paint.

Nearly the same with the Honda. Both are V-twins, but the Honda sits traverse, like a Guzzi. Both (except the HD twin cam) feature a central cam and pushrods. And there, the differences begin.
Memory Fail II in the narrative. The CX-500 had a 7500 RPM redline. I forgot that. But it was fun when the engine woke up at 5kRs. IF you were already pointed where you wanted it to go, that is. You would absolutely love the 4 valve per cylinder drive via forked rockers off the single pushrod over single cam system, I think. Honda or HD, HD or Honda. At some point, the engineers have to find a mutual respect, even if designs differ.
