People were talking about Hefeweizen which I like but I found wheat beers turn skunky relatively quickly. Good beer though. And I know it's my own stupid fault for not drinking it in time. How can a man screw up beer? I can. I buy beer, don't get around to drinking it for a few weeks because I get busy and then I forget about it.
"Man, beer would be really great now, Oh shit, I have beer! One-month-old beer." Definite user error. And I don't go over to friends' house's bringing beer and I don't have friends over and share beer since the pandemic. Posted by: banana Dream at October 22, 2021 06:36 PM (+gFOr) 7

Squib - A squib is a miniature explosive device used in a wide range of industries, from special effects to military applications. It resembles a tiny stick of dynamite, both in appearance and construction, although with considerably less explosive power. Squibs consist of two electrical leads, which are separated by a plug of insulating material, a small bridge wire or electrical resistance heater, and a bead of heat-sensitive chemical composition, in which the bridge wire is embedded. Squibs can be used for generating mechanical force or to provide pyrotechnic effects for both film and live theatrics. Squibs can be used for shattering or propelling a variety of materials.

We had a Border Collie (Cooper), who we took camping with us at McGee Creek just south of Mammoth. Took horses up the mountain trail. At a flat spot, McGee Creek was pretty wide and snaked its slow way through the meadow. Cooper was bounding through the meadow and went to leap the creek and realized half-way across that he juuuust wasn't going to make it. Wiley Coyote style, he went straight down into the snow melt cold creek.

Little girl uses her umbrella to keep the rain off a stray dog. __________ Many years ago our Miss Possum took Best of Breed at a show where the rings and the grooming area were in separate buildings. Just as the Hound Group was set to go in, a tremendous downpour started. Her Majesty asked me to please carry Possum - who was a big girl - over to the other building. As we walked through the rain, HM solicitously held an umbrella over... Possum. "If you slip and fall, try not to get her dirty." Trump is sorta like a regular dude who always did the things a regular dude thinks that billionaires do. Buy a skyscraper. Coat everything you own in gold leaf. Bang a bunch of supermodels. He never knew that Real Money buys a Senator or two, buys a private island in the Caribbean, and bangs a bunch of orphans. Anybody can just "buy shit". Posted by: Cannibal Bob - don't order the schnitzel at October 22, 2021 06:57 PM One memorable Christmas eve years back, my date and I had a very fancy dinner at a lovely waterside restaurant in deep south Louisiana. Very picturesque; the water side of the restaurant was plate glass windows, allowing a lovely view of the lawn gently sloping down to the mist laden water (bayou), from which jutted a rickety looking dock with several pirogues tied thereupon. To my surprise, upon exiting the restaurant we walked down to the boats where his was waiting to take us further downstream to a bar that looked like it was right out of . At this point, I still considered this a "good date", not too far from the norm in south Louisiana. We walked a wooded path to this bar and upon entering it was as though I had gone back in time a hundred years. 7' ceiling, 3' of those smoke filled. Dark inside. At some point a fight broke out and I saw the very small bartender leap over the bar with a pole that had sparks - big sparks - shooting from the end. My date grabbed my hand and we ran - fast - down the path to the pirogue. /1 Posted by: one of the quiet ones at October 22, 2021 07:17 PM (T823z) 125

In the scenes ? All the time. I doubt we will ever really know what happened on the set, but we can be sure that the "early reports" coming out are not accurate.
Either he was being an ass and play shot at people, or he was acting and shot toward the camera as part of the performance. (in the former, he should be up for manslaughter charges, in the latter his involvement as an actor is accidental) Either it was important that the gun be real and shoot blanks, or they were being irresponsible and cut corners. (This shifts the blame to director and producer and firearms expert, safety expert, etc.) Regardless, I can see no justification for real rounds on a movie set. So maybe it was a "faulty" blank, in which case the person handling the blanks should be up for negligent homicide. It is not just an accident when a real round is mistaken for a blank. (and it seems clear it had to be a real round) tbc. pixified Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at October 22, 2021 07:34 PM (LojwE) 163

Posted by: SFGoth at October 22, 2021 07:26 PM (KAi1n) The setup theory sort of founders on the fact that the perpetrator of the alleged setup could not have known that Baldwin would pick up the gun, and aim and fire at the camera operator. But it might be interesting to know which actor was scheduled to be shot at using that particular gun, Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 22, 2021 07:34 PM (P3gRi) 165
cont.
My bet is that they cut corners and had real rounds for use as props instead of inert dummy rounds. (closeups on a revolver where you can see the bullet). And Baldwin ended up with one of those rounds in his gun, while acting. That would be a major breakdown of all safety protocols as I understand them. In which case a lot of people should be up for negligent homicide charges but I doubt any ever will. Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at October 22, 2021 07:35 PM (LojwE) 166

Really ... "Alec aimed a prop at a man, never aim a gun at anyone". That look like the kind of shit you've ever seen in a movie ? Of course, and who was this that went on and on this morning about it, Keanu Reeves is so damn good that he can handle cycling a blank filled gun so fucking well that there is no risk. Because he trains. Apparently the man is a gun ninja. Should get out of Hollywood and go special operator. Point being - all this shit shouted from the usual suspects - "Never point a gun, even with blanks, unless you want to kill it" is bullshit. It was bullshit in the Army. It's bullshit in Hollywood. We won't have movies if "never point a gun, even with blanks" becomes the standard. Alec Baldwin is an asshole. And much of the "conventional wisdom" being spouted here is just stupid. The whole Alec Baldwin situation has been simmering all day at AOS. There are several things to remember, right now, IATSE is point fingers at Baldwin the producer as hiring scab labor--they are the ones that said a live round was fired. If you read the Daily Beast story, they quoted a movie consultant that said a live round in movie land could have referred to a blank cartridge.
There possibly could have been a bore obstruction of something inside the bore that was propelled at high speed by the blank cartridge, it could have been a live round with a sure enough bullet, it could have been at very close range where the wad that is in a blank cartridge was propelled at a high enough speed to cause death. A lesser theory is that the cartridge fragmented, etc. Baldwin's actions immediately prior to the shooting also are at issue--was it a planned shot in the script or him being a jackass showoff. Also consider that Baldwin sure enough has a crisis publicity team working for him along with a standard publicist and the classic thing that publicist do is work the phone and spread uncertainty and doubt. Civil liability is probably a given here, criminal depends on facts. Posted by: whig at October 22, 2021 07:49 PM (9hXN1) 220

BTW, most of the blanks used in the military for semi autos require blank adaptors that divert hot gases enough for the action to cycle and to prevent bore obstructions and wadding from exiting the bore at high speed to cause injury.

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at October 22, 2021 07:44 PM (LojwE) There is simply not enough information available about this incident to judge what happened right now. If the distance were short enough, then a blank in and of itself can absolutely be fatal. However, you can look up some details about how Brandon Lee was killed on the set of The Crow in the mean time. Summary: 1) arms master was away from the set at the time, 2) the bullet from in-house created "dummy round" (i.e., an off-the-shelf cartridge with powder removed) made it into the barrel of a revolver between scenes, 3) a blank was loaded and fired in a subsequent scene propelling the bullet through the barrel and into Brandon. For anyone interested here are some old articles on firearms safety in making movies (or as I am calling it why Alec Baldwin is guilty of murder in the form of negligent homicide)...
"NEVER, under any circumstance aim or shoot toward the head and face of another person. The weapon should ALWAYS be "cheated" or deflected away from the actor" https://t.co/CN9t2Z6QWu?amp=1 "This is why we use distances and angles to keep actors safe....Blanks should always be aimed slightly to the side of another actor...There is usually no reason why we need the actor who's being "shot" to be in the same frame at the same time"https://t.co/4UbPQ3mdVi?amp=1 "Obviously, blanks are still dangerous within like, 20 feet." If that's true, then how is any war movie filmed without filling graveyards with the corpses of extras? Well, first off, "A gun is never pointed at an actor on a set, even if they're 50 feet away. It's always off angle, just as an extra safety precaution. It may look on camera...like actors are firing at one another, but they never are. At least, not when we're there." https://t.co/KaqWRNqLEq?amp=1 Posted by: BetaCuck4Lyfe at October 22, 2021 08:03 PM (MFZ8i) Posted by: The Puddin' Junta at October 22, 2021 08:03 PM (Xrfse) 273

One report said they're out already. Another said they're still in. A third report said the second victim was actually an anteater named Francis, and is currently in critical condition at the Auckland Nature Preserve in New Zealand.
A fourth said the anteater's name is actually Francine and we should all be ashamed of deadnaming xir. You wouldn't have fun watching an authentic Badfinger tribute band. The music would be good, but then they would get stiffed for the pay and half of them would hang themselves. Unluckiest band of all time. You start up with assistance from various Beatles, have two or three large hits early on, and end up like they did WITHOUT having any major behavior or drug problems. 257, Your good authority will get you imprisoned in 50 out of 50 states for assault with a deadly weapon (or some variant of it).
For civilians, brandishing, assault, etc. charges can create legal jeopardy if you do not know what your state laws are regarding deadly force (which all firearms are considered, even fake ones). Suggest reading up using Andrew Branca's Law of Self Defense and his new Principles of Self Defense, or Mas Ayoob's two books on the subject. Mitch Vilos also has a book out that is several years old on the subject but gets into state specific laws. Branca does so as well in supplements for particular states. Law of Self Defense
@LawSelfDefense More specifically, the key is inherently dangerous "instrument," not necessarily a "weapon." Like explosives, heavy equipment, dangerous pharmaceuticals, etc. Requires more than usual care to use safely, even innocent failure to meet that duty is at least negligence. Quote Tweet Jack Posobiec @JackPosobiec · 26m Excellent @LawSelfDefense video Points out a firearm is inherently a deadly weapon, and with this knowledge comes potential legal liability if use results in death The question is between negligent (civil) vs reckless (criminal) Show this thread 5:44 PM · Oct 22, 2021 Posted by: BetaCuck4Lyfe at October 22, 2021 08:08 PM (MFZ8i) 296

@LawSelfDefense It's a gun. Inherently dangerous instrument. #AlecBaldwin knows this. If he decides to take someone else's word that it's unloaded before he points it at a woman and shoots her dead, that's on him. Takes a fraction of a second to confirm the weapon won't kill an innocent person. Quote Tweet Lisa @Rockprincess818 · 1h This isn't an accidental tragedy. Good grief can't we wait until more details come out about this Alec Baldwin shit? We don't know if it was an round with an actual bullet. We have enough gun people here to know that a blank still releases an amount of energy from the barrel. Has anyone speculated that maybe while shooting a scene the gun was fired in proximity of lighting equipment and maybe pressure from the blank blew apart the shade to a klieg light, piece of camera equipment? If "shrapnel" is an accurate description, maybe something hit this gal and the director that blew apart during the blast from the blank. Hopefully we'll get the truth and full story but until then were just guessing.

324 Soothsayer, possible something was left in the bore, distance also might suggest something. It could have been a live cartridge.
Movies often use squib charges to simulation where the bullets hit but that can up the budget. Actual live rounds have been used to hit objects (not people) such as when a building where the good guy is holed up is shot up (with no one in there for example). Then there are dummy rounds with no primer and powder but using a real bullet that are used for realism when loading (blanks are obvious). As someone reported above, it is possible that a bullet separated from a dummy round through rough handling (you crimp them or solder them in place in the dummy cartridge normally). Then put a blank in, the bullet is discharged from the muzzle. There is a type of storage rod that uses the bore to hold the firearm, that could have separated from it and been left in the bore, etc. At point blank range, a blank wad in the blank cartridge (to keep the powder in) can leave the barrel with enough force to penetrate a bit which could under the right circumstances cause death. In addition, at point blank range, hot gases blowtorch flesh and bone from a wound. Posted by: whig at October 22, 2021 08:25 PM (9hXN1) 358

From what I've been able to glean, Baldwin was using a shotgun.
In the movie biz parlance, a "live" round doesn't mean what most people would call it. As in a regular bullet cartridge or shotshell. "Live" would refer to a blank, something to keep in mind when people start talking about live rounds in a gun. Posted by: Common Tater at October 22, 2021 08:31 PM (PlGk9) 376
338 Braenyard, I am seeing too many alleged 'facts' right now. That happens when a big news story hits and part of that is twisted by publicists with agendas and media contacts.
Right now, we know that Baldwin shot the cinematographer and the director. With what, how it happened, what did Baldwin say, what did he do, etc., we do not know. I do know media has typical incompetence where they would report Baldwin using an M-16 fully automatic machine gun in a movie production of the old West. Or an automatic Glock revolver. According to Yahoo News, court documents filed about the Baldwin case, say the gun was loaded with real bullets. An assistant director handed Baldwin a gun loaded with real bullets and he then fired. Who he was aiming at is not clear, but apparently the bullet went through the woman, killing her, and then into the director, who was standing behind her. There was a cart with various guns being used and there was some mixup about which had real bullets and which had blanks. I'm still trying to figure out why Baldwin was pulling the trigger when they weren't filming that does involve breaking all sorts of gun safety rules.

"why was there a live round anywhere on the set?"
They were probably using live rounds as props, when showing rounds, instead of empty, live looking dummy rounds. Posted by: davidt at October 22, 2021 08:56 PM (2/FOp) 447
There was a cart with various guns being used and there was some mixup about which had real bullets and which had blanks.

It would be quite the twist if someone from the Local messed with guns and ammo on the set. But we all know union members never do that sort of thing. Posted by: S'oothsay'er at October 22, 2021 08:56 PM (aGUIs) 450
Again, a "live round" in the movie biz means something different than in common usage.
A prop firearm containing a blank cartridge is called a "live" round. But it isn't a live round as we understand the term. I think this may be a source of confusion, if this is the case. Posted by: Common Tater at October 22, 2021 08:57 PM (PlGk9) 451

@438 Oldcat-My theory until publics made his comment was that none of us know wtf happened. Period.
Yes thats my theory. Fire a live round that is not a blank at the director and cinematographer who would then dodge bullets like the Matrix but still get a bitchin' shot. Guess they should have worn kevlar vests with ballistic plates. Posted by: JROD at October 22, 2021 08:57 PM (0jZnq) 453

You were not there. You cannot say definitively wtf happened. You do not know if he was given the all clear to fire the gun. You do not know if he was required to fire the gun in the direction of the cinematographer and director. Maybe you have experience on the set of a movie filming a gun fight.
---------------------------------- I have Alec Baldwin admitting he aimed the gun, and medics reporting the woman is dead. Thus he has final responsibility for handling his gun. And as a co-producer, he had additional responsibility for any failures of procedure, which I am assured would never let anything like this happen. That family and their dog that died on the hike, died of extreme heat and dehydration. They originally thought it might be the algae bloom in the local water. But they were hiking on a very steep trail in temperatures that went up to 107-109. Killed their baby too. Posted by: Notsothoreau This has me scratching my head. Posted by: JROD at October 22, 2021 09:01 PM (0jZnq) 465
The simplest explanation I can come up with is:
- Baldwin had a shotgun loaded with blanks of some sort for the scene - He made a "joke" about shooting the director, and fired towards him - Enough crap came flying out of the barrels, and he was close enough, that the director and the cinematographer both were injured from it. It takes the least amount of speculation, and doesn't contradict anything we actually "know" so far. It also explains why he was described to have been bitterly weeping shortly afterwards.... plain old shame. Posted by: Braenyard at October 22, 2021 09:00 PM (cvH3m) --- That's my theory. If it turns out they were filming and he was shooting a gun in the scene, I don't know, given how they film gun movies, what else actor Alec Baldwin could have done. However, the negligence of the crew is something that *producer* Alec Baldwin isn't likely to escape. Posted by: Axeman at October 22, 2021 09:04 PM (OaZlZ) 473

qdpsteve (#147):
"Alec could find himself blackballed by Hollywood unions over this incident" - not to mention he needs to find a new director of photography on short notice, which won't be easy when all the candidates know he shot and killed the last one. I don't know how badly hurt the director is that he shot, but even if he's out of the hospital tomorrow, he'd have to be damned hard up for money to even think of going back to work for Baldwin on this movie, or any other. Seems likely Baldwin will have grave difficulties finishing this movie, or doing another as producer, or ever acting in another movie except as a powerless do-everything-you're-told-and-shut-up actor with no say in anything.
