The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

They’re standing athwart yelling ‘Stop!’ They really think this. They don’t think, ‘I’m writing this check so that Rich Lowry, Ramesh Ponnoru, Jonah Goldberg and other fat useless grifters can have six-figure jobs to do nothing but sell out my country and pretend that they’re saving it.’ I don’t think they’re doing that, but to be completely clear, that’s what they’re doing. Michael Anton

Quote II
There are no great limits to growth because there are no limits of human intelligence, imagination, and wonder. President Ronald Reagan

Quote III

Happiness is dependent on self-discipline. We are the biggest obstacles to our own happiness. It is much easier to do battle with society and with others than to fight our own nature. Dennis Prager

Quote IV

"If you came and said to me, ‘We will pass the CEPP as written but we will exempt West Virginia from it,’ I would take that deal," Do I think that’s possible? I mean, probably not, but that would be acceptable, right? Because West Virginia is an irrelevant part of our economy." Rep.Sean Casten (D-IL)

Does this mean that West Virginia is free to secede from the USA?

Quote V

“We refuse to become the vaccination police for any government,” “We fiercely disagree with any government dictate that forces a private company to discriminate against customers who choose to patronize their business.” In-N-Out Chief Legal & Business Officer Arnie Wensinger

The phrase, "Good enough for government work", comes to mind.

The National Park Service and United States Secret Service began construction on a new White House fence in July 2019. With an estimated $64 million price tag, the new barrier features an approximately 13 feet tall fence with wider and stronger fence posts, according to the National Park Service. The upgrade came after several incidents over the past few years of intruders trying to scale the fence and enter the White House grounds.

The NPS noted that the new fence “incorporates anti-climb and intrusion detection technology and is designed to mitigate current and future security threats,” and while the current status of the project, which has been completed in phases, is unclear, there’s one minor, yet potentially significant flaw. The spacing of the railing is wide enough to allow children to slip right through.

A Reuters photograph of a small boy climbing through the White House fence at will Sunday morning was shared by the Daily Mail, as well as an Associated Press photograph of a slightly older boy squeezing through the railings while taking a selfie. According to the British tabloid, President Joe Biden was present in the Executive Mansion when the intrusions took place.

Reason #125 not to shop at Walmart.

Walmart is facing a new lawsuit after a pharmacist in Albert Lea, Minnesota, refused to fill a prescription for ivermectin to treat a Marine vet and his wife, both of whom were suffering with COVID-19.

The Marine, Bill Salier, shared his story the “Steve Deace Show” on BlazeTV Monday. Salier told Deace that out of desperation, he ended up purchasing the “pony paste” from the feed supply store, and they both almost immediately got better.

Salier, 53, told Deace that he began feeling sick on Oct. 1, and tested positive for COVID-19 a few days later. After his diagnosis, Salier said he attempted to receive monoclonal antibody treatments through the Minnesota Resource Allocation, but his requests were ignored.

“We never so much as heard a word back, not even in acknowledgement that the requests had been put in,” he said.

Approximately 3 years ago I attempted to fill a prescription at a Walmart. The pharmacy tech asked what it was for. I told her it was none of her business. She wouldn't fill it and I left. I've never been back to that store.

Four star officer my ass. Ugly & mentally ill, is rewarded.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday former Pa. Department of Health Secretary Rachel Levine is the nation’s first openly transgender four-star officer across any of the eight uniformed services of the U.S.

Admiral Levine now serves as the HHS Assistant Secretary for Health and head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps where she was ceremonially sworn in. She is the highest-ranking official in the USPHS Commissioned Corps and the first-ever woman to become a four-star admiral.

A renowned female author behind a series of ultra-violent Spanish crime novels has turned out to be a pseudonym used by three men.

When ‘Carmen Mola’ won the the €1million (£845,000) Planeta literary prize, her creators decided to finally reveal themselves.

Former TV scriptwriters Agustín Martínez, Jorge Díaz and Antonio Mercero went public and claimed the prize at a TV ceremony on Friday, attended by the Spanish king.

It was already well known that Mola was a pseudonym, but many will have been surprised to see the middle aged male trio walk on stage and explain themselves.

Here are the readings for Cornell's 'Advancing Racial Equity Work' class

The “Advancing Racial Equity Work” course at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations requires students to "[a]dopt a racial equity lens to understand organizational practices, norms, and processes."

Courtney McCluney, an assistant professor of organizational behavior, also asks students to "[a]ssess barriers and solutions to advancing racial diversity, equity, and inclusion at work."

The syllabus for spring 2021 course lists Our Separate Ways, Black and White Women and the Struggle for Professional Identity as one of the readings.

The State of Washington fired a Division I football coach. Will Seattle follow suit and dismiss 200 police officers?

SEATTLE — About 200 Seattle police officers have declined to get the COVID-19 shot by Monday’s deadline. The revolt is likely to bring litigation against the city — already hurting due to a severe staffing shortage — to prevent their mass termination.

Law Officer previously reported that 354 officers did not submit their shot records by SPD’s deadline of Oct. 5. But the city deadline was Monday, Oct. 18.

The previous story was put into The ONT earlier today.

I'll make a small confession. Our household owns Apple products. But we aren't spending $19 plus tax for this rag.

If you were ever concerned about safely cleaning your Apple products, now you can use an official $19 piece of cloth made by Apple to do so. Apple released this polishing cloth after today’s event in addition to its new MacBook Pros, the M1 Pro and Max chips, and third-generation AirPods (via 9to5Mac).

Facebook AI moderator confused videos of mass shootings and car washes - Executive concerns of “over-enforcement” let hate speech through, report says.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg sounded an optimistic note three years ago when he wrote about the progress his company was making in automated moderation tools powered by artificial intelligence. “Through the end of 2019, we expect to have trained our systems to proactively detect the vast majority of problematic content,” he wrote in November 2018.

But as recently as March, internal Facebook documents reveal the company found its automated moderation tools were falling far short, removing posts that were responsible for only a small fraction of views of hate speech and violence and incitement on the platform. The posts removed by AI tools only accounted for 3–5 percent of views of hate speech and 0.6 percent of views of violence and incitement.

Moar and gooder technology. Motorist fined after CCTV confuses his number plate with woman’s T-shirt

David Knight was baffled when he received a fine for driving in a bus lane in Bath – about 120 miles away from his home.

But the builder and his wife, Paula, who live in Dorking, Surrey, laughed when they examined the photographic evidence of their alleged infraction and saw a woman with the word “Knitter” on her T-shirt, which the computer had mixed up with Knight’s registration plate, KN19TER, the Daily Mail reported.

The private registration on his Volkswagen van is a nod to his nickname, Knighter.

The penalty charge notice, issued by Bath and North East Somerset council, includes a CCTV photo of Pulteney Bridge in Bath, where the alleged contravention took place.

She plays mean and dirty. And her and her family are rolling in the grift.

FOX NEWS – House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif., has paid her daughter tens of thousands of dollars more in campaign funds this year.

Campaign finance records reviewed by Fox News show that the congresswoman’s campaign has paid her daughter, Karen Waters, a cumulative $74,000 in donor cash through September.

The last quarter alone saw over $20,000 go to the younger Waters, which is nearly a third of the median American household income in 2020, according to the Census Bureau.

Deserted islands cost too much to buy. We can have Moronville for under a Mil. (H/T redc1c4)

WATER VALLEY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The town sign might need a little sprucing up, but if you’re looking for an affordable town to call your own, one little Middle Tennessee town just might be your saving grace.

The former town of Water Valley is a place travelers might have stumbled upon while driving to the Duck River or after making a wrong turn in Maury County, but this sleepy little town has gained national attention as Tennessee’s very own Schitt’s Creek.

Located roughly an hour southwest of Nashville, Water Valley sits on seven acres of land and has an estimated population of 20, according to the listing agent. The asking price gives Nashville’s real estate market a run for its money, listed at just $725,000.

Fisher-Price’s iconic Chatter Telephone now makes actual phone calls

Handle your next work call with the solemnity it deserves

Apple’s iPhone 4 is often held up as a pinnacle of phone design, but what about the Fisher-Price Chatter Telephone? With its friendly features (a big smiley face painted on the front) and mobile design (thanks to its four wheels), the Chatter Telephone has long been the gadget of choice among the aesthetically discerning and the under-4s. This week, to celebrate the device’s 60th anniversary, Fisher-Price has blown our minds once more with its courage and innovation: the Chatter Telephone now makes and receives phone calls.

I can't wait to see what they do with the Easy Bake Oven and Creepy Crawlers.

A Canadian couple lives up to Canada's friendly reputation. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Jennifer and Ron Taylor have a deep appreciation for Nelson, a city they've called home for nearly two decades. But lately, the couple has been troubled by life in Nelson.

It didn't make sense to see how nurses and doctors had gone from being celebrated in the early days of B.C.'s lockdown to being vilified in 2021.

"What happened to the pots and pans?" Jennifer told the Nelson Star. "What happened to the drive-by with cheers out the window? What happened to all the heart emojis on all the windows and every door of homes, of businesses? What happened to all that gratitude?"

On Sept. 16, the couple delivered a box to Kootenay Lake Hospital. Inside were $50 gift cards to various restaurants around the city. The couple purchased 322, one for every person who works at the hospital.

The total donation cost over $16,000.

43 I'll probably end up filling out their stupid form because my livelihood is under threat - the nice thing is that while their questions are pretty obviously crafted to eliminate people who object on the basis of abortion (e.g., they demand you explain why you're OK with other medicines and vaccines but not THIS one, and they ask you to name other medicines and products you don't use because of your religious beliefs*), they clearly have not considered the Mark of the Beast angle, so I think I'll be set - but I'd like to talk to a lawyer for advice. But I don't know what kind of lawyer that is.

*They may be surprised by the answers they get, as many of us do in fact decline to do business with companies and organizations that support abortion, to the extent that we can. E.g., I don't buy girl scout cookies even though I LOVE thin mints and Samoas.

He was relaying a story about a minorish court case and that the right had a couple of lawyers but the lefts lawyers and attendant activists and support groups literally filled the courtroom.

That's the level of engagement the left has, if we can't match that we more than likely can't win.

60 Read an interesting AITA the other day about someone who bought a burned-out property, the home already demolished, and did NOT build a new home. The garage had a super cool apartment above it that was a good size, and by living in that apartment, the OP will be able to pay off the property in 5 years. But the neighbors are super pissed because OP didn't build a new house, which they expected.

I can see the neighbors' POV, especially if there's still a hideous burnt patch in the middle of the property, but at the same time, if the OP isn't breaking any zoning regulations, too bad so sad.

*They may be surprised by the answers they get, as many of us do in fact decline to do business with companies and organizations that support abortion, to the extent that we can. E.g., I don't buy girl scout cookies even though I LOVE thin mints and Samoas.
Posted by: Mrs. Peel at October 19, 2021 09:15 PM (8548M)

Mrs. Peel, you may want to talk to the pastor at the parish nearest you, as they may know layers versed in religious objection litigation. Also the ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice) might be a good place to start as well.

For the record, Aldi has knockoff Samoas for 95 cents. They used to have thin mint knockoffs as well, but I haven't seen those in the store in months. Their chocolate bar topped butter cookies are pretty good too.

185 From Fox News: Terry McAuliffe abruptly ends interview, tells local Virginia reporter "You should've asked better questions"

From what I read is the reporter asked highly relevant questions and McAuliffe, rather than answering the questions, pitched a fit and stormed out of the interview. The McAuliffe's internal polling must show him losing and precisely on his totalitarian answer that parents need to shut up and sit down when it comes to challenging school boards over their childrens education. Another "tell" in the interview is McAuliffe keep flapping his wings that he is all about bringing people together. *SNORT* Whenever a politician, especially a Uniparty asshole is squawking about bringing people together you can be sure he or she is an empty suit and ready to strip you of your liberty.

It's a tricky process for sure. If you're pretty sure your house will sell quick, you can take some risks. On my biggest move, I rented a house for a year in the new locale, moved all my crap, then got busy on finding new work. And your old house will sell easier if it's empty imho. Good luck.

190 We need to get D.B. Cooper to review the Houston MD-87 crash.

Video I saw at from the start of the takeoff roll, seems to very clearly show the effects of a compressor stall, or some similar engine failure. About a twenty-foot long sudden plume of bluish grey smoke suddenly ejected out of one of the engines, right as the flight crew pushed the throttles to takeoff power.

Now, this should've been both felt in the cockpit, and evident on the instruments. The fact that the plane never hit takeoff speed tells me the launch should've been aborted well before V-1 speed. There's no way the acceleration could've felt "normal", given the apparent failure of one engine. Even a partial failure. Further, the fact that even after the fire, the engines are largely intact, it shows plainly that the thrust reversers were NOT deployed. The crew was relying on wheel braking alone to bring the plane to a stop.

*shines DB Cooper spotlight up on the clouds*

From what I read is the reporter asked highly relevant questions and McAuliffe, rather than answering the questions, pitched a fit and stormed out of the interview. Doctors (and their staff) make mistakes. Let's say it's supposed to be a new script for high blood pressure meds, but the script is for an anti-seizure medicine. They ask, and you say it's for high blood pressure. They look at it and realize it's wrong.

I'm one of the ones that reads the data sheet that comes with the meds and compares the tablet and code to what comes on the sheet. I doubt everyone does that.

But the Biden admin put a halt to that, and shut down discussion of it. Why? They were afraid that people wouldn't get the current clot shots to wait for the "better" variant specific versions.

Apparently, the usual suspects have made vaccines for several variants so far, but this is all being kept quiet.

Expiration date on box is March 2023. (What he doesn't know won't hurt him, eh?) Protocols are online at FLCCC site (google FLCCC ivermectin protocol)

443 If Water Valley doesn't work out, or if it turns out more than one Moronville is needed, I think Yellow Dog is for sale again. It's an old mining town near here, the last people moved out maybe 25 years ago? It was pretty empty even when I was a kid. A couple of hippie-dippie types bought it a few years ago with the idea of turning it into a tourist spot where people could spend a few days living like a poor coal miner in rural Pennsylvania. However, they failed to take into account that even poor coal miners don't WANT to live like poor coal miners, so their idea never took off.

446 There was a Jollibee in Mira Mesa (Manila Mesa - though it seems more Vietnamese than Filipino to me, well except for the Indian part, west, which is all Qualcomm). I think Naturally Sh**ty (National City) has one of the largest Filipino-origin populations in the US. That and San Jose. San Diego's population was probably to some degree the result of the Navy Stewards program, where 20 years as a steward = citizenship (think that's how it worked).

One interesting and wonderful quirk about Filipino-Americans here is, many are gun nuts. Purely on an impressionistic basis, vastly disproportionately so. On duty days at the range, sometimes 1/3 of the shooters are groups from that community.

There's one guy who brings varying groups of guests, actually ran into him at a handgun match past weekend. He's a wizard with AR builds so I may well seek his help when I finally get around to building my first.

I think they split up over some business/family matter, and then the "-bertos" proliferated - Adalbertos, Gilbertos, etc.

All pretty much the same, some better than others, often very good, and good value.

Great donuts. Fresh. They make them throughout the day, and they were outstanding. Love Dunkin' Donuts (one of the few local outlets is just blocks away), employees there are great, but they've gone to a commissary system (one central bakery), and only deliver to that location once a day. ???? What?

Anyway, the donuts were for walking along the sportfishing harbor. Then, fresh local halibut from the seafood deli there, was fantastic on the grill. Fresh donuts and fresh halibut seem like a healthy balance. I could be persuaded to that as a lifestyle choice.

I am no computer guru, and certainly not a Linux guru. The Linux command-line stuff is Greek to me. But I don't have to understand it. I just go to one of the many Linux user/help sites, read the cookbook directions, type it in, and hit "enter". And it works.

You can download Mint (or any other distro) free from the Web, put it onto a bootable thumb drive, and run it in your existing machine from the thumb drive. If you like it, you can then tell it to install to the hard drive, either in its own partition so you still use your old OS, or tell it to wipe the HD, and do a clean install on a now-empty drive. I have always chosen the latter option, as I was installing into used machines with somebody else's cruft on them.

I chose Mint, because it is reputed to be the easiest distro for Windows user to learn. The desktop looks very like a Windows desktop.

I still say Sicily and Ireland are well known in Europe for being particularly friendly. But I know the USA is at another level. We let people become Americans no matter where they are from. THere are very few countries that do that, it is not in their DNA.

492 481 Wow, Bert, you lived in IB? Back in the day, not a bad place. Very quiet, and this was before the TJ sewage issue or border issues arose. Have always meant to hit the sandcastle competition down there, still haven't made it.

The long-time treasurer/finance guy of IB was murdered in Mexico a few years back. Apparently it was a "clean" incident - meaning he wasn't involved in organized criminal activity, which of course was the instant first assumption.

There was a butcher shop (called that, not a "carniceria") back in the day in Nestor, next door, that had amazing beef jerky. A childhood favorite.

494 I think "friendliest" is an impossibly unquantifiable metric, and is also very dependent on circumstance and individual personalities.

I've found it everywhere, and been lucky to explore some backwaters few ever see.

And in some cases it's important to distinguish friendliness from just varying dispositions. Urban Russians have a pretty cool public visage, even rural ones - but can be so warmly friendly when out of the public square that it's overwhelming. Kiwis in the far south of the South Island are reserved, but very informal and friendly.

Small towns in Bali, anywhere in Eritrea, all over non-urban (and even urban) Brazil, small ports in Baja, and famously anywhere in Japan (if you're a gaijin). It's everywhere, depending on your receptors and the circumstances.

Nope. U.S. Customs has a station at the Calgary airport. Once I got through there, I am "officially" in the USA. When I step off the plane in Denver, it's as if I were on a domestic flight. But there is still the TSA-type airport security to deal with. If I go out of the secured zone, I would have to get re-groped.

528 El Cajon is not exactly trendy - at least most of it. The hills to the east and south have always been nice, and the larger lots to the east below the hills were where people moved in the 60s and 70s so they could have horses.

And El Cajon, like many other areas (south of I-8, for example) is much worse than it used to be, mostly because of the hollowing out of the middle class (the real one, not the government employee new one). Manufacturing was destroyed by regulation (Buck Knives moved from El Cajon to -- Idaho? -- back when the de-industrialization of CA was really picking up steam).

Of course there was some "natural" decay in the strong local industrial economy - aerospace vitality was mostly in LA, Seattle, Ft. Worth, Wichita (cyclically) starting in the late 70s. Post-Cold War aerospace collapse in early 90s was a huge blow.

I got to visit there this past April, first time since '94. Obviously, much had changed. And much hadn't, not much at all. It's still a near-paradise.

565 Oh yeah, the PacBell dispatchers gave me "going away" present: I was headed back to the yard on my last day when they paged me to take one last trouble ticket. It was at Cheetah's, where the "minimum point of entry" (where the telco's responsibility ends and the customer's wiring begins) is located in the dressing room.

567 the thing with pizza is good is good. Anyone knows when something is good and when it sucks. We have a place near here that has all the Neapolitan certifications. I think they under cook it and are so focused on certification and authenticity that miss out on making it the best pizza they can make.

The Pizza wars will never end. Of course it came from Italy. But when people scoff about Pizza being a famous American food, they are legit being purposely obtuse. This country has sold more pizzas than any other. Some are good, some are bad, there are many regions and they are all authentic.

582 Today - another standard spectacular day, surprise! - did a quick hike down at Cabrillo, as we often do. Very calm conditions. Western swell, there were two boats anchored out in the kelp beds, their owners each had their own large surf area to themselves (and both had fishing lines in the water from their boats, I noticed). Sea lions sleeping on the rocks. Warm enough that the chapparal "perfume" was noticeable on the breeze. Ocean was very blue.

Told a park volunteer how we used to be able to crawl inside the coastal artillery observation bunkers up near the lighthouse.

A few F-18s from North Island came roaring around the point, fairly low, and headed northwest, presumably out to San Clemente Island (another magic place).

Pool's still there (surround structure looks much modified). Wonder if it's got heat now.

617 jim, and Jim NSD - duh! - I was blanking out, but now of course remember the See's you're both talking about, down near Sports Arena Blvd. That's the "bulk" store, where corporate gift programs, groups, etc pick up their stuff.

We've used that store at holiday times, too. Big staff, big place, they keep the lines moving.

I guess jim is right, that one qualifies as not in a big mall of some sort. But the one on Balboa is the old school kind, stand-alone, small.

I confess having stopped by both See's factories, the one on La Cienega in LA, and the one in South San Francisco not far from the airport (and the national cemetery). Honest, both were on the way to friends' houses (true) at certain points. I still remember talking to the driver of the tanker truck at the South SF one - truck was spotless, you could eat off of it. He was connecting the hose to a big stand-pipe sorta dealio - labeled "milk chocolate". There was a "dark chocolate" one next to it. Awesome.

You know one thing that always bugged me: Field of Dreams. He mows down some corn. He builds the baseball field. Then, before Shoeless Joe shows up, he is talking to his wife who is concerned over their finances. She says 'And because we lost so much acreage to the baseball field, we might not make enough to pay our mortgage.'

Really? Is their 'farm' that small? Was this written by someone who does not realize how big farms are?

634 Ughhhh my throat is trashed. We juat saw Foo Fighters at the forner Key Arena (the new name is stoopid). The security measures were asinine and invasive. The show was ridiculous. Dave Grohl wanted to keep going, they played over 2 hrs. This was after death cab.

I love live music but I doubt I will be going to more shows soon. The security theater is totally harmful to dignity and totally transparent. I feel so bad for the people who have to enforce it. Luckily down in GA it was dark so many people just took masks off and security didn't care.

Definitely on the side of Filburn, even though he lost. I mean, because he grew more wheat than the Fed quote, but for his own use, it was found he affected interstate commerce by NOT buying wheat that he grew himself for his own use. Utter bullshit.

648 A dude, yes, the stupid card. This location won't accept tests, which is a pity since that might actually DO something. They wanted the Clear app which is jhorrifyingly intrusive. There was a line for plain paper cards but it was so long they basically didn't have that option. Inconvenience you with their creepy app.

658 Hey, Farmer!

I'm one of those thst tries to hold out 'til Nov 1st before turning on the heat, though I can't do that at mom's!

We've had some cool overnites but the days have still been into the 60s and 70s.
