Daily Tech News 7 October 2021

Top Story

  • The difference between the Nazis and the Democrats is the Nazis only needed one Reichstag Fire.

The Facebook "whistleblower" is nothing of the sort. She's a paid lobbyist for government control of social media.

  • Windows 11 is all about new hardware. (ZDNet)

Not about supporting new hardware. About getting you to buy new hardware.

Old system getting the job done just fine? Not anymore.

  • And if you were planning to upgrade to Windows 11 on your shiny 16 core Ryzen system, you might want to hold off on that. (Tom's Hardware)

It's as much as 15% slower on Ryzen systems, particularly ones with lots of cores. There's a patch coming.

Tech News

  • Linux now runs on Arm-based Macs. (Tom's Hardware)

Well, sort of. There's no installer, no networking, and video is a dumb frame buffer like this was still 1993, but if you somehow manage to get it on there it will in fact boot.

  • Amazon says don't blame us, it wasn't our game that caused the smoke to come out of your $3000 video card. (Tom's Hardware)

Narrator: Yeah, it kind of was.

A stock 3090 running Amazon's New World can draw 370W just sitting at the menu.

  • The PCIe 6 has reached a final draft. (Tom's Hardware)

This is four times as fast as PCIe 4 I'm not sure it's going to arrive in desktop systems any time soon, but I said that about PCI 5 and that will be shipping in about a month.

  • The monitor I wanted - LG's 27UP850-W - came back in stock this morning and I ordered two. It all looks good on paper; 4K panel, 95% of DCI-P3 and 100% of sRGB. It's not calibrated for Adobe RGB but I don't do print work so that doesn't matter nearly as much.

It has USB-C power delivery so it should be able to power the smaller of my two laptops directly. The laptops each have USB-C and HDMI, so they'll both be connected to both monitors and I can switch as needed.

The plan is to retire my two current desktops entirely. The larger of my two laptops has a faster CPU and GPU, and more memory and SSD (but no internal hard disk) than either of the desktops. The smaller one is for rare occasions when I'm actually in the office; the rest of the time it's backup because I can't afford to be offline just because my main computer caught fire. And for single-threaded tasks it's also faster (by about 40%) than my current desktop systems.

Update: It seems they had at least three of them, because I can see that my order has been allocated at the warehouse and is now in dispatch, and the monitor is still in stock.

Update 2: And they've shipped. I didn't pay extra for 1-day shipping because I need to clear a space for them, but I should still get them Monday.

  • Also just got a shipment of gluten-free snacks from Amazon, stuff that's not readily available from the local supermarkets. And a computer toolkit with about 100 different screwdriver heads. Also a pressure washer. I was looking at one for cleaning the back deck and they were on sale this week, so I threw it in the cart with the snacks.

  • The community is a disgusting toxic cesspool said a 4chan user - referring to Twitch. (The Record)

And then leaked a 125GB file containing all of their source code.

Disclaimer: Don't you know that I'm a cesspool?

7 Speaking of Win 7, I have a laptop with that. I only use it now and then, but it's hanging in there quite well. So is this MacBook Air I'm writing on, and which I use for most recreational 'Net cruising at home. Win 10 is on my "work" laptop from 2020, and on my desktop at work. And the old desktop here at home, which I use for most of my fiction writing, is . . . an XP!

22 Morning, all. Well, the updating of mi casa has begun. New hot h2o heater...under the house, in a crawl space, that had less than 6 inches of wiggle room and took 5 yrs to install. Now understand my friend is the licensed plumber who did most of the work. I'm just the gopher banker, however, my fingers hurt as did my head afterwards. Yesterday, new faucets all around. Kitchen one has a sensor so I don't have to touch it. Thought I would come out of the '70s. Today, lighting.

27 The core OS on apple is Unix, so I'm not quite sure what the advantage is of installing Linux on the bare metal.

Just Open a terminal and type uname -ra and you can see for yourself.

Also you could install any number of Arm based Linux distros as a VM using parallels on your M1 Mac if you like.

I watched the hearing and I couldn't agree with you more. At one point during the hearing, she made the case that she wanted a new Federal agency created that would regulate the social media companies and the only people like her, the really special people, needed to be in charge. The Senators wet themselves over and over and over during the hearing. In summary, I think I saw the emergence of a new priesthood. If things go the way she wants we are on an express train ride to a Chicom style social credit system.

30 Windows 11 is all about new hardware. (ZDNet). Not about supporting new hardware. About getting you to buy new hardware.
---
Ed Bott's article was pretty spot on. I am not finding much here to criticize MSFT over. One of the big headaches for MSFT is supporting every cat, dog, and frog in the Universe; I think they are taking this moment to reduce the legacy machine stack significantly. As a practical matter all the machines that missed the cut still have full support under Windows 10 until 2025. One of my boxes got whacked by this policy but it is 5 years old right now and it is on the hit list to go away in a year or so. No worries.

As for new hardware, I picked up a Surface Pro 8. It is one of the most perfect PCs I have ever used. The goodness comes from lots of places - the total effect is greater that each change. If you like this form factor you can't go wrong. Windows 11 is just fine; I figured out how to work around the new start menu limitations. I hope they bring back folders - that is a pretty bone head move cutting those. So far it is Windows 10.5. In a few years it will be Windows 11.

If older hardware and software are sufficient for the task at hand and you are happy with the situation keep them running. For mainstream use cases such as email, surfing the web, and media consumption it has been my experience that older boxes work just fine. I try and get 5 years or more out of a machine. I am not doing software engineering stuff anymore so I don't need the latest and greatest. On the other hand, than has never stopped me for drooling over new hardware.

Posted by: LostInSpace at October 07, 2021 05:03 AM (ESLBo)

35 Just about every iteration of Windows has been about upgrading the hardware. One of the reasons why I took a long time to let windows on my computer and why I finally stopped doing the automatic upgrading.

It's like a dog chasing it's tail. And It's become obvious with an OS out there (linux) that doesn't need to do that that the hardware seems to be the reason for the upgrade of the OS. It should be the other way around.

P.S. Some here were wondering why our comments are time stamped from the mid west time zone. I thought maybe you missed a digit re the universal time zone and hadn't had the time or it's too much trouble to fix that. It's not important as long as we have something to mark when a certain comment was made.

I'd like to know what happened cause I like to know shit like that.

Have fun in OZ Land and hopefully more of those scumbags will quit and you all can go back to normal. Hope you've learned some lessons. Primary one being: get back your guns and don't trust the cops.

For gaming, I plan purchases and replacements in terms of a single cycle of Moore's Law. If it lasts four years, I got my money's worth. Computing power will have doubled, so it's time for a new one to run the new stuff.

At some point, if development is uninterrupted, we'll hit a wall where games are indistinguishable from movies, and upgrading every four years will no longer be necessary, because no improvement will be possible.

I expect that will never be the case, as I think we're in for another Dark Age if the Globopedo Cabal keeps things moving in their direction. Their permanent success is impossible, but if they are successful enough in the short term, there will be a dark age as society shatters and begins reforming from scratch with tribes and warlords.

When my Dad used to work at a big complex of buildings visible from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, his plan was to see who was essential on snow days, and fire the rest.

I'd think that could work if you selectively drop some full-timers to part-timers: say, for a vivid example, the cleaning crew might not come in on snow days but would need to come in at some time.

Well, I'll try. Millennials think that a company and its users are one and the same, and that the former bears some kind of responsibility for the latter. Companies are supposed to refuse customers that the mob determines are "problematic".

In this case, the leaker believes that 1) Twitch is somehow responsible for the hate raid mobs' behaviour in the first place, and 2) that Twitch isn't doing enough to prevent the raids. Since Twitch has a de facto monopoly on game streaming the leaker thinks that giving away their IP and trade secrets will bootstrap competitors to the service.

No, none of this makes any sense, but remember these are the people who claim we have to destroy capitalism because Nintendo made Pokemon too easy.
