LOL: Saturday Night Live's Ratings Down 50% from Last Year

A "comedy" show is only allowed to be gruelingly unfunny for so long.

Despite that strong return content wise last night, "SNL" is still suffering viewer apathy.

Last night's Season 47 premiere had just 3.5 million viewers, which was the same for the last two episodes of Season 46 last May.

But the Owen Wilson-Kacey Musgraves opener brought in less than half of what Chris Rock did for the Season 46 premiere. Rock's show came in at around 7.5 million.

Of course, last year at this time the election made "SNL" hot, and there was huge demand for political comedy. The Rock show was also the first one back in the studio after the pandemic had made "SNL" virtual.

But the ratings last season dropped precipitously after the election was over. By January they’d leveled off to a regular "SNL" rating of 4.1 million. But then, after Nick Jonas hosted on February 27th, around 500,000 fans left and never came back. Why? Who knows?

55 Such a shock. Funny, but when I think back on all the classic sketches - none of them are political. I mean, Chevy falling down as Ford is barely memorable, and certainly wasn't even a sketch per se. But now to them, comedy is nonstop shilling for the left and bashing the right.

I'm surprised the thing is still on the air. Then again, the left has proven they care less about the bottom line than getting the narrative out.

70 Willowed: The problem with the paste syringe is, I've found, when you press the plunger on a new tube, you'll pass quite a few marks on the gauge before any product comes out. I just measure an appropriate length of "bead", like caulk, based on the markings on the gauge. I'm about 150' so I get about six doses per tube, and about a 1" bead on my spoon works out perfectly.
Posted by: Taqiyyologist, Rickrolled by Jesus at October 06, 2021 1

***
Are you locking that white ring down before you press the plunger? The locking ring prevents the plunger from going into the main tube any farther than the mark you set the ring at, so you only get the measured amount.

The 80/20 rule applies pretty much everwhere: 80% of the laughs come from 20% of the sketches.

I dare you to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus, the regular episodes. By and large they're painfully unfunny. Occasionally there's a Dead Parrot but the rest is dreck. The movies are great, but that's about it.

Page 6's headline is "Lena Dunham wore three wedding dresses to marry Luis Felber"...the jokes just write themselves. She's quoted in the article saying "It was so beautiful, and so fun to wear, and so good for dancing because it was like a giant, chic tent."

Also, "Dunham wears her engagement ring on her pinky, as changing the size of the delicate antique was not an option"

Surprisingly, she has since come out bashing the "unexpected" and hurtful comments on her photos for body shaming and the like.

All the news aggregator sites showed older, svelter(?) pictures of her, but a quick Google search for wedding photos told a very different story:
https://tinyurl.com/36fprxdp

Oh, and don't ever say leftist men are creepy pedophilic weirdos! Her stylist is quoted as saying "You look like you're either at a first Communion or a Madame Alexander doll, both of which I also liked!" Dunham told Vogue of the final look.

(via Legal Insurrection)

A European study says the obvious: Everyone needs to figure out how to deal with the disease symptoms, because the vaccine is leaky.

I'm *theoretically* willing to give comedians a pass for not doing anything with Obama.

Obama really legitimately had a crazy cult surrounding him, which he was smart enough to understand but not principled enough to encourage. People got wrapped up in that, I get it. Plus nobody wanted to be called a racist, and Obama's cultists were willing to lob the racism charge at anyone. So if you're a comedian who likes your job, going after Obama just wasn't worth it. It was cowardly and lame, but I can't expect everyone to be a hero. You gotta pay your mortgage, and you can't do that if you're fired from SNL because you made an Obama joke.

But no one other than dullard Wine Aunts & crazy grandmas on Facebook/Twitter actually loves Biden. He doesn't have a crazy cult around him the way that Obama did. He was nobody's first choice... [to be continued]

181 PC is the death of comedy. That is obvious whenever you watch any of them. CONSTANT political screeds (against only one side, of course.) Even the stuff that is neutral gets only a half hearted chuckle.

One interesting thing about self selection: the jokes that they are making get claps- but they are not clapping for the wit or the biting sarcasm, but rather the political opinion. They are clapping for reflection.

Constant bubbling and opinion reflection are dangerous fucking things. Even here. The problem is, we so rarely get honest argument here. Trolls have made us rigid and pretty intolerant and for good reason. I am not sure how to fix the problem.

Nobody LOVES Biden, he doesn't have a cult, nobody can defend him using a "racism" allegation. We should be back to where we were in the 90's, where liberal comedians would go after Clinton a lot. Not often enough, and not always for the best reasons, but he was a target.

But that's not what's happening. Biden is getting the same crazed partisan defense/deference that Obama used to get. Maybe comedians just got in the habit after Obama, but really, shame on them. They're out of excuses.

This is true, and going back to watch old SNL only makes that more clear. When there was more talent, the ratio of good to meh was better, and even the meh was okay because of the people involved but... yeah. SNL has always been mostly not great, and way, way too many ads.

I actually disagree a bit here. As I mentioned above - the classic sketches we all remember - 90% of them were not at all political. Bass-O-Matic. The French Chef. Murray's lounge singer. Coneheads. Motivational Speaker. Happy Fun Ball. Chippendale's Audition. Ambiguously Gay Duo.

Yes, when they did politics back in the day, it was whoever was in power, it didn't matter. Triumph the Wonder Dog would skewer anybody. Hartman's Reagan was hysterical. But it was anything but mean hearted. And really, most of the political bits are long forgotten, even if they were funny at the time. IIRC Franken and Davis was often political, and usually sucked big time.

I'd also be willing to bet that most of the leftist rags when mentioning best-of's are going to bring up nothing but political sketches, with Alec Baldwin at the top.

I'm not sure either Gilead or the Taliban are more dystopian than Klain/ Bloomberg, but I can stipulate.

The problem with Atwood's take is that the setting says more about her sexual hangups than any sort of realistic "handmaiden" theocracy. If fertility and motherhood regain primacy, childless women will be divorced or killed, to be replaced by their younger and prettier handmaidens. If "Christian" wives have any sort of input, the handmaidens will have their limbs struck off and be reduced to breeding stock in some grimdark Cabbage Patch Kids facility.

She doesn't have the courage to follow her setting through to it's conclusions.

Posted by: Sponge - Michael Byrd MURDERED Ashli Babbitt at October 06, 2021 11:56 AM (IXZGh)

363 The good SNL sketches are memorable because the storytelling is good. There's an arc, there's conflict - it's done quickly, but it's there. You understand that the characters have backstory and an existence beyond what's in front of you at the moment. When Rob Schneider was makin' copies, you could tell that everyone in that office had been putting up with him forever, that there was nothing that they could do, that they were just trying to get through their day and here he was, always finding new ways to be annoying.

There's no storytelling with clapter. There's just "ISN'T THIS STUPID??? LAUGH AT HIM!!" and "HERE'S AN ANALOGY TO SOMETHING EVEN WORSE, NOW LAUGH AT IT." (Dennis Miller, I am sad to say, really ushered this in).

Jokes at the expense of Trump and conservatives, or defending liberals, could be funny. But there needs to be storytelling. And nobody wants to tell a story, because that's hard.

377 The day of the More Cowbell skit, Mrs Doof and I did the NBC Studios tour. We were in town for our 5 year wedding anniversary, while her parents were watching our firstborn who was 10 months old at the time. As we walked past the SNL stage (only viewable through a window in a hallway), they were rehearsing the More Cowbell skit. We could clearly see Will Ferrell and also some folks with musical instruments -- but we couldn't hear anything, so we had no clue what it was. We were out at a bar/club on Saturday night seeing some band (don't remember who), and SNL was on TVs there -- but no sound. Fortunately, we had set our VCR to tape SNL so we could watch it when we returned to MD.

Anderson went on to be the introductory voice on The Love Boat amongst many other gigs.

Also father of Paul Thomas Anderson.

418 This is one reason jokes about sex, corruption of political figures, money, and life and death are evergreen- we can all relate to these subjects. That is why you can go back and watch some comedians from 70 years ago and they are still funny. Leftist political humor is often very personal to the target. It is not like saying 'he never met a bribe he did not like!' (this is something that is common to many politicians.) George Bush is stupid, see! Now that 'could' be evergreen as many politicians are fools, but rather this is about how Bush is far more stupid than Clinton or all of the super geniuses of the Left.

The best part about the copy guy was most anybody working cube farms back then had somebody like that to relate to. That whole concept of office environment was new, and frankly horrific.

Story telling is hard, and harder for the younger generation. We see it in almost every movie coming out of hollywood. The concept of an arc is foreign to them. They want to get straight to the punchline. It really is identical to the South Park where Whoopie Goldberg is MC, and says over and over "Republicans are so stupid" (crowd goes wild).

They want to get straight to the punchline. It really is identical to the South Park where Whoopie Goldberg is MC, and says over and over "Republicans are so stupid" (crowd goes wild).

The joke structure that consists entirely of taking the thing you want to make fun of and drawing an analogy to something absurd, thereby calling the original thing absurd, is 100% Miller. It's not all of what he did, and it's sometimes funny, but it's 30 years old now and it's overdone. Also: Miller didn't invent the comedy rant, but he popularized the shit out of it, which is why we have comedians making political speeches punctuated with occasional jokes instead of actual comedy.

The last time I renewd my drivers license in CO they changed the organ donor status to 'Y' after asking me specifically (despite the paperwork I provided saying 'N') and me telling them no. So then when I reviewed it and they had spelled my address incorrectly and changed my organ donor status. Asked them to fix both. They only fixed the address. So then when I reviewed it the second time, I again asked them to change organ donor status to 'N,' which they finally did.

I got the impression there was a stealth quota on that or something, the way this was asked out of the blue and then the 'mistake' persisting through several versions against my permission.

557 Leave it to hospitals to be the deadly squeeze they'll put on the unvaccinated for no other reason than they feel they can. A person's vax status has no bearing on anything. But they'll get away with it unless they are stopped. What insanity.

Due to the immunosuppressive anti-rejection medications required by transplant recipients, all transplant programs have protocols regarding immunization status, so that the recipient has protection against various infections once they have had the transplant. Afterwards, they are not as able to mount an immune response on their own. This directive may stem from that line of thought.

I think what is NOT known, is the converse. That is, what the effects the mRNA vaccine types may have on the body's immune system vis-a-vis the risk of rejecting a transplanted organ. That question remains to be answered, and may take years to manifest itself.

Good that you confirmed. It was unsettling the way she kept making me an organ donor.

559 Their parodies of Sunset Boulevard and Gone With the Wind I saw before I viewed the originals. I was surprised to find the bit about Carol's Scarlett using the window drapes to make a dress was in the original film (minus the comedy, of course).

Conway was brilliant. He performed with his whole body, not just his face and hands.

561 You can't have a show relying on the talent of comedians when the comedy industry has been gassed by the left.
