Daily Tech News 5 October 2021

Top Story

  • Mark Zuckerberg and the terrible, horrible, no good very bad day. (Bloomberg)

All Facebook properties went down for six hours due to a BGP misconfiguration. When everything goes down at once across a giant cloud provider like that, it's usually BGP. Once you screw it up, you can lose remote access to the networking gear so you can't fix it, so a five minute solution can be stuck waiting for the right engineer to arrive on site with a serial cable.

The outage caused Facebook apps to go bananas with DNS requests which caused problems for Twitter, Google, Amazon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon...

The mee.nu server managed to crash all by itself. Actually, it's possible that it was related since I don't know why it keeps crashing. Just not probable.

  • New South Wales has a new premier after Gladys B, the least worst of a bad lot, resigned due to an ongoing corruption investigation of her boyfriend or something. I don't know the details, it's petty stuff compared to what's happening elsewhere.

I was waiting to see how much worse the new guy would be, and... Well.
It's not the most elegant formulation of the concept of negative rights I've ever read, but to have a politician - particularly an Australian one right now - saying this is refreshing.

  • Facebook DNS lookup returning SERVFAIL. (Cloudflare)

  • What to expect with Windows 11. (AnandTech)

  • I mean, it's not actively terrible. (Tom's Hardware)

    Just, y'know, kind of meh.

  • Android 12 is out too. (Thurrott.com)

6 was the last version that mattered since it brought us adoptable storage - that is, you can take a 32GB device, add a 128GB microSD card, and it works as a single pool of 160GB of storage.

Of course, the major device manufacturers and carriers hated this and immediately broke support.

  • Don't trust SMS-based 2FA. (Motherboard)

Syniverse, which handles three quarters of a trillion text messages a year for 300 different mobile networks, was hacked.

    Five years ago.

They discovered the breach in May and just disclosed this a week ago.

Everything sent from May 2016 to May 2021 was an open buffet for hackers.

  • What happens when Google decides to break the web. (The Register)

What happens is the web gets broken.

  • RaidForums - a site where people buy and sell the personal data that is increasingly less aptly named - or not, as we'll get to in a moment - went abruptly if briefly offline after its domain name was yanked. (Bleeping Computer)

It's back up for now on another domain.

  • When I said or not, this is what to which I referred.

11 So Facebook basically tried to commit suicide today and failed. I am pissed off. The only good thing that happened is all the twits that work for Facebook were locked out of their offices and to add further insult to their injured egos is they couldn't complain about it on the internal messaging system. In my heart of hearts I was hoping this would last like 25 years. 6 hours is a big letdown.

14 Why would I switch to Windows 11? From what I can see its big selling point for me is it's a bit harder to root. That's something, I guess, but it's not like the old days where a new OS version gave you something that was gonna make your life easier.

I remember Windows 95 in particular, which had "plug and play" for peripherals, which, although it was much derided as "plug and pray", really did make installing a video card a whole lot easier.

15 Maybe the tech outages were a procedural step in handing over the whole kit and kaboodle to the CCP.

Posted by: m at October 05, 2021 03:29 AM (Zsfob)

16 Windows 11 looks like an incremental update unless you get excited about new start menus and rounded corners on the UI. I get to find out about it on Wednesday as that is when I received my new Surface Pro 8. If Windows 11 annoys me too much I'll just flatten the box and reinstall Windows 10 on it. In fact I may just do that right out of the gate since my desktop is one of those boxes that is perfectly capable of running Windows 11 but Microsoft decided it wasn't worthy of receiving such goodness. Having to deal with two different interfaces will drive me insane. I am one of those curmudgeons who likes his or her computers to have an identical setup so I can go from machine to machine with zero fuss. Still, it's good to see that Microsoft came to its senses and is throwing meaningful resources into the OS again still I wish they would send the UI people down to Facebook so they could muck things up down there.

This reminds me of when Yahoo got nailed for coughing up about a billion user credentials. I think it went on for a couple years and then when they found out they didn't say anything for months. Or when Equifax got hacked and had 140 million US citizens private information swiped. Of course they didn't say anything about it for months either. The response from both these clown shows? So sorry. The laws need to change for such matters. Not knowing for 5 years that hackers had a free run of your entire computer network is criminal. Oh wait, that sounds like the US government computer systems and the Chicoms.

33 Since its Aussie news this might be of interest. The guy that runs Shadiversity just returned to Australia from a trip to Canada. He's fully vaccinated so when he got to Canada he was able to do what they allow. He went back to Australia, even though he's full vaccinated, he had to quarantine for two weeks in a hotel, at his expense. They have a cop on every floor. And the only way to use the elevator is with a key that the cop has. Solitary confinement and torture were what he had to say about it I believe.

Being a network tech, we have a rule. In anybody's build, there will be one dinosaur that would take 3 million dollars to replace. I have one customer that still has a monochrome CRT monitor from a brand that went under at least a decade ago in their space. The piece of gear it connects to has drives for a 5 and 1/4 inch floppy disk.

Mind-boggling. So yeah, we know what serial cables are. Back before I was on the graveyard shift, I'd say I dealt with them about once a month or so.

Put it up on Ebay or something. Might be some hobbyist somewhere (or some company or government agency running dinosaur hardware) that needs it.

Some of that kind of stuff is starting to get rare and expensive, just because nobody makes it anymore.

Our local school district just sent out a notice about rumored upcoming TikTok challenges. Last month was stealing school property. This month, slapping staff.

The letter spells out consequences for theft, property damage, and assault. Leaves me shaking my head. We're long past "It's wrong to..." and onto "Your parents didn't teach you morals, but maybe they'll warn you."

The contradiction is self-evident, and has been noticed. I've seen a lot of people online asking why "My body, my choice" somehow doesn't apply to COVID shots. IMO, it should apply to COVID shots and not to abortions, because in an abortion, the body being destroyed is not yours.

Also, if I have a squatter in my house and hire a hitman to take a hacksaw to him, my right to privacy in my house does not outweigh the murder.

Goober Graham and 19 other Repuke stalwarts voted to confirm that shitheel after hearings that made it obvious he was the type of AG that wouldn't adhere to the Constitution. Remember that the next time some irritating harridan hectors you to vote harder for some traitorous Repub that you know is a mistake.

You know who was one of those 19? McConnell himself. The "Murder Turtle." "Cocaine Mitch." He encouraged his caucus to vote for him.

But its RIDICULOUS to oppose him.

No wonder we lose.

175 "Domestic Extremists" are extremely domestic, actually.

It is interesting that the school boards are so unaware that, if masses of irate parents want to keel haul you, it may in fact be an indication that you are the problem, not them.

They want to "Defund The Police", just last week, now it's "Call In The Brownshirts!" Hm.

They didn't ask for the local police, or sheriff or even the State police - they went straight to the mother ship and demanded goons from the Lubyanka to crack heads.

180 Attorney General Merrick Garland has instructed the FBI to mobilize against parents who oppose critical race theory in public schools, citing "threats."

--

Imagine in the 1950s if public schools were pushing Glorious Communism and any parents that said, "whoa, not so fast..." were going to be pursued by the FBI. It would've been simply incomprehensible. And this is where we are today. That camel's straw is just about ready to crack. And it'd better do so soon before all is lost forever.

This "National School Board Association" is yet another extra-Constitutional organization that has no legitimate authorization to actually exist.

Sorry Judge Merrick Garland didn't get day in the sun he deserves today, but he's superb choice to be AG. He was as good as it gets as top DOJ official in 90s: smart, committed, patriotic, terrific lawyer, and gentleman. We'll disagree on some policy, but DOJ in good hands.

Instantly shut up, contact a lawyer and get as much of the encounter recorded.

The FBI is the uncontested enemy of We The People and a rebuke against freedom, liberty and justice.
