Round And Round It Goes; Where It Stops Nobody Knows (Except For The People Who Read History)

The time is long past when the mere presence of American troops was a robust deterrent against incursions from bad actors. That deterrence ended on January 20th, 2021, when President Donald Trump left office. It is laughable and naive in the extreme to assume that any agreement made by the current administration (junta) would be honored if its domestic political expedience waned.

The experience of the last 20 years would suggest to America's allies that when the going gets tough, America leaves. Ukraine has had that bitter experience, and there is no reason to assume that the next round of incursions by the Russians would be met with anything other than fierce condemnation in the United Nations and a rapid acceptance of the new status quo.

So why would the Baltic states be any different?

America needs a permanent military presence in the Baltics, and here's why

With the Defense Department weighing whether and how to change the U.S. military footprint overseas, it’s time to make the American military presence in the Baltic states durable. Maintaining merely periodic American boots on the ground, sometimes there and sometimes not — especially while a more permanent U.S. presence takes shape in nearby Poland — sends the wrong message at the wrong time to NATO’s most vulnerable allies and to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Particularly in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the concerns generated over American credibility, only a consistent U.S. military presence in each of the Baltic states can convincingly reassure allies that Washington has their back while also signaling to Putin the rock-solid American commitment to NATO. The seemingly rushed, chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has caused some American allies in Europe to question Washington’s commitment to NATO.

NATO? That is a cruel joke. Turkey is in NATO, and has worked assiduously since Erdoğan assumed power to undermine NATO members throughout the region. Germany is a weak military power with outsized economic muscles that pursues its own (often anti-American) ambitions while being protected by American might.

A much more realistic plan might be to follow the Israeli template. Supply them with weapons and share technological advances without dedicating any American troops to their defense. We might even provide air power (but not from bases in-country) in the event of an attack, but the idea that Americans will once again bleed in defense of a foreign country is one that needs far more justification than a return to Pax Americana just months after we failed spectacularly in Afghanistan.

There is one way that a physical presence in the Baltics (and Poland) would make sense, and that is a total shift away from NATO and toward the anti-Russian (and anti-Chinese) countries in the east. Spend the money where it will do some good, leave NATO to its own devices, force Germany to contribute to its own defense, and pull out of western Europe. The many billions we spend in the economies of countries that are often our economic and political adversaries would be much better spent in countries that have a growing sense of personal, religious and political freedom, rather than the current tone of resignation, stagnation, and worst of all -- acceptance of the socialist nanny-state as the highest form of government that seems to infect most of western Europe.

8 Now is not a good time to be an ally who depends on the US for survival.
The US still has vital foreign interests, but this administration and the state department are genuinely too stupid to know what they are. And forget about them coherently articulating what they might be.

17 Trump was pushing toward less direct intervention, and more tactical/tech support from above. From my limited view, we needed to keep Bagram to provide the necessary support for the Afghan army, knowing their limited abilities. But even more, keep the base for regional support against other threats.

But it is a very complex world, so I can only try to make sense of what the more America First type generals say. Auxus is the new thang for the South Pacific I guess, which must somehow fit with the Quad thing (India, Aussies/Japan/U.S.). ...

Smart people have long ago said we need more of an India/Russia/US working agreement ... not China/Pakistan/Iran?/U.S. ... But idk how that fits with U.S. backing the Baltic States ... instead of drawing the line at Poland. ... The human trafficking across the old Soviet states is run by ? the Russian mafia, or former KGB? So many rumors ... Big Guy Biden wants a cut of all that action, no doubt.

34 I've read history, and what I've concluded is that we're the bad guys. Us. We don't have any "allies" in third world countries, we have victims. We take what we want, exploit the situation and leave when there's nothing left to take.
We don't have "allies" in western countries either, in many ways they're our victims too, and they're paying the price with their crumbling democracies, turning into fascist states.
Our enemies, we created. We were sold on the idea that we're the world police, and like any other corrupt police system, we brutalized and exploited the people who became our enemies, and if we'd left them alone, they'd not be our enemies today.
Even China, we created that too. We let our oligarchs go in and enrich themselves, while they hollowed out America's core industries. Now they're big and scary, and people think they're out to get us. Meanwhile, WE created this stupid virus that bouncing around the world too.

The reckoning will come, and it won't be pretty. We probably don't have the will to do it ourselves, so the world will wait until we're weak enough to strike. And strike they will. In our lifetimes or in our children's, we will pay.

37 There is absolutely zero chance that the U.S. Ruling Class will "establish a U.S. military presence in the Baltics". The U.S. Ruling Class only picks on hellhole countries in the Middle East. You know. Ones that can't fight back. Not ones like Russia.

But it is 100% guaranteed that Biden will start a new war in the Middle East before the end of his first term. I would't bet on a re-invasion of Afghanistan, but I would bet against it either.

Three years later, what's the upshot? The U.S. finks out, does a deal returning Meng to China, and our citizens finally get released. What was the point of the whole thing? It was the very dramatic launch that was enjoyed by covid: the disinfecting of the streets in Wuhan by people in hazmat suits, the stories of corpses littering the streets like the plague. 92 Russia has a very robust footprint in Kaliningrad, smack dab in the middle of the "Baltics." I've no idea what would be accomplished by having a US presence there other than antagonizing the Russians. US troops would be exposed. The airspace for hundreds of miles is covered by a pretty sophisticated Russian IADS (integrated air defense system) that forms a huge umbrella in the area. Other than Poland, the Baltic states are of questionable readiness and willingness to fight the Russian bear.

The junta's actions in Afghanistan must have given pause to any current or future ally. IMO basing US troops in the Baltics is a fools errand.

Anyway, giving them guns and tech might work. The Baltics have long had a plan to retreat to the mountains in case of invasion and fight a guerrilla war. Students of history will note that they did exactly that during the Soviet era, and the Forest Brothers were a thorn in their side for over a decade.

Did you know that the big cities don't have much say in how this country is governed? That's what the AP says anyway.

"NEW YORK (AP) - As political muscle goes, bigger doesn't always mean better. Just ask New York, Los Angeles and Chicago every four years, when those cities become mostly irrelevant blips on the Electoral College map.

But as congressional redistricting gets underway, some of the country's most populous cities are taking prominent roles in reshaping the balance of power in Washington. And that's good news for Democrats."

108 Russia and by extension Putin aren't buddies. But, they aren't mortal enemies. Instead of letting the neocons run around crying about the Russians or the new Soviets, maybe looking at reality would be helpful. Ukraine is the equivalent of Mexico to us. Maybe us playing in Ukraine doesn't make sense. You know all of those countries right on the border of Russia? Yeah, you're screwed. You've been screwed by geography. Coming to some arrangement with Russia is your best bet. Same with anyone else if we actually had the will to exert our influence in Central and South America.

Shifting US focus to E Europe has many parallels with French history with NATO. When that pompous scarecrow De Gaulle pulled France out of NATO in the 60s, he realized that France could get all the security they needed from Soviet invasion, without any of the responsibility to lift a finger to defend anyone else in Europe, simply as a consequence of geography.

Despite their public apprehension, NATO is probably loving the new unilateral US focus on E Europe, since they don't need to vastly expand their defense spending to benefit from E Europe seeking to defend themselves.

I was lucky enough to get to play whistling straits 20 years ago. $200/round at that time. Caddie said we'd be walking 7 miles that day. Ever since I've always had a love for links style courses.

159 "Until the US starts realigning itself to the US Constitution, I will hold our military suspect. It's not the military that we think it is."

They're purging everyone who won't take the vaccine. Because they want to purge Republicans.

Apply "Kendi Logic" to the situation. Anything that disproportionately affects Republicans is party-ist. It's intentional bigotry designed to oppress us. The only thing that matters is whether a public policy oppresses us or not. Anyone who promotes policies of oppression is an oppressor and is LITERALLY doing violence to us. Treat such people accordingly.

160 "I am TIRED of going to third world $hitholes. Enough with the Middle East, Africa, Korea."

yes, but we are still The Superpower ... and battles now are in tech and finance. Power can be exerted/extended in multiple ways, though a military is still necessary.

Jim Rogers (investor guy) thinks the opening of North and South Korea will come soon (not unification, but trade opening I think). But he says US and Japan oppose it, because we want our bases their (as a front against Russia) and Japan (Rogers says) can't compete economically.

idk, but the War is now maybe won or lost with military as the last stand .. though the surrender at Bagram indicates the oligarchs are sending a message that we won't fight. kinda hard to read all the tea leaves, since they lie on every front.

163 Anyone who thinks the Ryder Cup isn't a Big Damn Deal has clearly never lived five miles away from the event.

It was kind of surreal, actually...massive traffic all around Minneapolis (like the Super Bowl, the total draw is like 500K because of all the hangers-on) and no hotel rooms to be had in a 200 mile radius but because of the shuttle points set up across town when I'd drive home along the highway leading to the Hazeltine National course it was just me and a few buses and limos.

I do too.My dream is to play some of the places in Europe. I have played some links courses in the USA but that is about it. No much how I love golf, I never brought my sticks to Europe. I was after different things. Looking back,I wish I brought my sticks. Then again, in many ways I dont because it wasn't about golf.

I played golf once in Europe,it was in the south of Spain. It was an amazing course and an amazing experience. I played with rented clubs but the guy gave me his own clubs. The course was absurdly great. I could mention details you wont see at the average round in the USA.

175 There is a line between actions that assure allies and those that provoke adversaries. Bringing the Baltic states into NATO was a strategic blunder...why double down by placing US forces in those states? A Russian motorized force can make the drive from Narva, Estonia -- on the Russian Border-- to Tallinn in a less than 4 hours. Try to overcome that geography with minimal warning. My peeve with policy suggestions such as this -- along with those advocating NATO membership for the Ukraine -- is that there has been no post-Cold War architecture put in place that doesn't feed Russia's historical paranoia. After WWII we got the UN, the Marshall Plan, NATO, etc In 1989, following the collapse of our major international competitor what grand mechanism was put into place? NATO expansion! Talk about sustaining an illusion of visionary statecraft... I'm going back to my guns and my books now.

176 "There is one way that a physical presence in the Baltics (and Poland) would make sense, and that is a total shift away from NATO and toward the anti-Russian (and anti-Chinese) countries in the east."

So a new alliance, based on a Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance perhaps, with those countries.
Poland would make an excellent base, with Warsaw as the headquarters.
But what to call this defensive coalition of eastern European countries with a super-power patron? "TFCMA" is way too clunky, and "East European Treaty Organization" would be "EETO", which is too screechy. We need some short, to the point, geographical name.
Hmm . . .
Oh well, I am sure something will come to mind for this grand military pact based in Warsaw.

178 pilsnerfan @175 nailed it. Problem with a Baltic Guarantee is logistics. Supply lines are far too tenuous if you can't count on western NATO states to help keep 'em open.

Of course, the people who make money from putting American lives in harm's way (Raytheon, LockMart, NorGrum, BAE, United Tech et al) will make out like bandits, as usual. Smedley Butler (War Is a Racket) was a Pollyanna.

180 The notion that the guy who abandoned the Kurds, negotiated the surrender of Afghanistan without having the Afghan govt. sign off, and met twice with the world's most tinpot dictator which served to legitimize said tinpot while receiving no benefit in return, somehow personified robust deterrence borders on delusion.

Early on, he was laughed at by the General Assembly to his face, and later, behind his back, by allied leaders gathered at the G7. He even publicly took the word of a virtual dictator over the proof gathered by his own intelligence agencies. By the end, everyone was doubtless afraid, fearing that he'd lost his mind over losing an election, and they required assurances that, no, this lame duck would not be permitted to go anywhere near the nuclear suitcase in his last weeks in office.

Putin won't invade the Baltics because they are NATO members and that would invoke Article 5. But, sure, let's transplant all of our well-established assets from those prosperous states, cramming them into 3 small, peripheral countries, and see how our fighting a Russian invasion (that won't come either) on our own works.
