To Counter Blue State EV Mandates, Red States Need To Start Mandating Gas-Powered Cars

The internal combustion engine is the engine of freedom. Gasoline-powered cars with internal combustion engines are the conveyances of liberty. You can drive 1,000 miles in a day if you desire, refueling whenever and wherever you like in a just a matter of minutes. The left wishes to deny you that freedom, and the two biggest blue states, California and New York, have now banned the sale of gas-powered cars by no later than 2035. Only the sale of “emission free” electric vehicles (“EVs” will be allowed.

It is imperative that Texas, other oil-patch states, and all freedom-loving states (hello Florida) start fighting back. If New York can pass a law mandating that 100% of all new vehicle sales are EVs, then Texas (and Florida, and Tennessee, and Louisiana, etc) can pass laws mandating that no less than xx% - let say 90% hypothetically - of all new vehicle sales in their states must be gas-powered vehicles.

In a sane world, consumers in every state would have the freedom of choice to buy whatever types of cars they want. But sanity has been lost, so a mandate to sell gas-powered cars in red states is necessary to ensure that consumers will still have the choice to buy something other than EVs.

But wait – we conservatives are worshipful about how the market will sort things out. Let Texans buy whatever they want, and if they want gas-powered cars, the market will supply them, right? I used to believe that, but it’s not true anymore. The liberal obsession to terminate driving freedom is unrelenting – they will not pause in their war against gas-powered cars until no one, anywhere, can buy one.

If our “conservative principles” mean that we do nothing in response, the marketplace of major auto manufacturers will take the path of obedience to the left, and they’ll only manufacture EVs. Well, what about start-up auto manufacturers filling the void if legacy manufacturers stop building the gas-powered cars that Texans want? That free market just doesn’t exist anymore.

The cartel of tech utilities, money center banks, government regulators, etc. can and will collude to crush any start-up that defies the corporatist obedience to “the climate crisis.” Lines of credit, ERP software, payment transfer technologies, and so forth would be denied by the cartel of woke capital. Rather than sell their ubiquitous software to a startup auto-manufacturer selling gas-powered cars, companies like Salesforce would more likely be leading the charge to get corporate America to boycott the start-up.

To fight back, what if Texas and Florida were to completely deny market access to major auto manufacturers unless they sell a required percentage of gas-powered cars? (Again, I like 90%.) Those car companies and their suppliers would be forced to find the backbone to stand up to the woke cartel, because those manufacturers – and their suppliers - cannot afford to be shut out of Texas and Florida.

Another principle of responsible state governments is to promote their agricultural and mining products. As you may have heard, Texas produces a heck of a lot of petroleum. So do Oklahoma, Louisiana, and other states. The destruction of the petroleum industry is one of the objectives of the blue state EV obsession. Texas and other petroleum-producing states cannot just sit back and let the Gavin Newsoms of the world destroy their oil and gas industries.

And don’t forget how useless EVs are in a hurricane. If Florida does not protect the right of its citizens to buy gas-powered cars, it will be consigning millions of Floridians to no way to escape from a major hurricane. Florida needs to join the gas-powered vehicle alliance to protect its citizens.

Then there’s the whole grid issue. Texas has already shown with its insane dependency on wind power, that it cannot produce enough electricity during peak demand. California has the same problem with too much demand and too much unreliable energy sourcing. People can’t drive their EVs if they can’t charge them in the first place. Adding millions of electric vehicles to an already overburdened grid would ensure that the days of personal transportation freedom were over. And that is a feature, not a bug, of the EV push.

Texas, Florida, et al must make a stand and mandate that gas-powered cars remain the majority of vehicle sales in their states. And what if somehow the demand just isn’t sufficient for traditional gas-powered cars to meet the mandate? Then auto manufacturers can just keep lowering the price of gas-powered cars until they are selling enough to satisfy the mandate. They’ve had to play that game to make car shoppers buy EVs. If they have to do so to sell cars powered by the engine of freedom, so be it.

26 I respectfully disagree, Buck. It is compulsion in both directions, and I am opposed to compulsion as a rule. I would prefer that any subsidy, preferential treatment, tax break, regulatory waiver, etc. - for anyone at all - be canceled.

That said, in the real world, retaliatory policy might work. But I suspect you'd find that it would be taken out toot sweet by the government. If Texas were to try this, they would find themselves smacked down immediately by a judge citing the commerce clause. Any attempt to enforce it would result in the Texas cops being arrested by the FBI or other federal cops. States don't really get to set policy anymore. If their policies align with Washington's, they have carte blanche to push as hard as they want. If their policies do not align with Washington's, they get smacked down promptly and hard.

But because the US federal government has ridiculous "climate change"-based policies in place with ridiculous fuel economy and GGE targets.

This is what happens when you allow the Left to take control of every institution in the country, control the narrative and then control the federal government to make laws based on "climate change" bullshit.

Coal gassification works, it just requires gobs of heat and heat is energy-inefficient to create. The energy exchange on the operation isn't economical. Unless, of course, you have a massive source of hear that is a process cost of another operation - like, say, a thorium reactor. The waste heat from that could probably drive a gassification operation essentially for free. And because American coal is often a great source of thorium (has at least as much energy in the form of thorium as in the form of hydrocarbons), it makes for a compelling possibility: rip the thorium out of it, chuck that into the reactor, then gassify the rest.

Too bad it'll never be tried. It might not work out in practice, but boy it would be cool to try it.

120 The problem with compulsion for compulsion is that government compulsion almost never produces the results it was meant to produce. With a law forcing production of gas-powered cars, the manufacturers would adhere strictly to the definition of gas-powered cars and still not produce that actual vehicles people want.

The better choice: ensure that anyone who wants to can create a new car company in Texas, or in Florida (or better, via compact, in both) without all of the restrictions in place that make it so difficult to start a new company and especially a new car company.

Make it so the Texas Automobile Group or the Florida Automobile Group (sorry, Florida) can create the best car in the world without interference from Federal or state red tape. Someone wants to buy a light car that gets great gas mileage, let them do it without armoring the car up. Someone wants to buy a big car that that can load enough luggage in the trunk for a family of five on a four-week vacation? They can do that in Texas/Florida/wherever.

There is a lot of demand for automobiles of different use, but current (mostly federal) regulations for all practical purposes dictates both form and material.

163 Wait a minute. Did someone seriously, unironically suggest that the answer to this government overreach is that you can just start your own car company?

If there’s political will to mandate gas-powered vehicles, there’s political will to make it easier to start up your own company.

If there isn’t political will to make it easier to start new car companies, there isn’t going to be the political will to mandate gas cars.

We had a series of "air cooled" 4 cylinder VW Bugs in the 1960's. Easy to work on, easy to fix, economical to run (got 25 mpg when gas was $.25/gallon). That said, COLD AS HELL in the winter. The air cooled engine put out no usable heat to heat the car. You had to get a catalytic heater that ran on gas, and that also put out some CO.

The greenest car is a used car. The end-to-end manufacturing will consume more energy than the car is likely to burn over its lifespan. Keeping a car - however much a gas-guzzler - on the road and working is greener than trading up to any car, regardless of how efficient its power plant might be. A used hummer is greener than a new Tesla.

203 Great idea. California is always pushing stupid ideas that become the law everywhere because it's difficult for companies to meet 2 standards.

We need to push back. With any luck California will realize how stupid their law is and drop it before it begins to bite. When it gets to about 2030 and California is still selling 80% non-EV, they might realize that they can't put all of their auto dealerships out of business. So CA will repeal, and Texas & Florida will look even smarter.

Don't mandate gas powered vehicles.

Simply prohibit the sale of electricity to outside states by electricity producers.

Details, details. You have to see the BIG picture.....

And yeah, Ohio had coal fired power plants all up and down the Ohio River, every 20 or so miles.
And they are all being scrapped or are already torn down. Ohio USED to be an electricity exporting state.
And now the utilities hitched their wagon to gas turbines running on Nat Gas, and Chairman Joe rammed up the price of Nat Gas by canceling fracking on Federal Lands at the beginning of his reign of error.

300 Study: Vaccinating Children Against COVID Makes Zero Sense; More Children Are Harmed by the Vaccines Than From COVID

A study published in Toxicology Reports on September 14, asks, "Why are we vaccinating children against COVID-19?" The study also poses the question, "Why are we vaccinating the elderly against COVID-19?" Researchers from Italy, Russia, Greece, Romania and the United States dissected the data on covid-19 infection in children and in the elderly.

They properly distinguished comorbidities in official covid-19 death statistics and compared survival rates from the infection with deaths associated with the covid-19 vaccine in relation to the total number of vaccinations administered.

---
After watching the Uniparty for a good long while I am convinced it flat knows that the centralized electrical grid cannot sustain millions of EVs and because of that it will restrict access to EVs when the grid becomes overwhelmed. For the good of all and because it is the right thing to do for the planet. This observation coupled to the destruction of the decentralized fossil fuel transportation system, that can sustain millions of vehicles at a cost virtually everyone can afford, I am left to conclude the unstated goal of EVs is to deny private citizens the ability to move freely about. Sheep in the corral so to speak. Equitable punishments and rewards will then quickly replace the freedom and liberty.

Hopefully they will be able to reprocess Lithium Batteries like they reprocess Lead Acid Batteries.

We used batteries for emergency power supplies at a facility I worked at. There were years where we replaced 60 or even 120 x 100-450 lb battery cells. Yes, TONS of Batteries. The lead and acid was all reprocessed into new batteries, and some of the lead probably went into bullets too.
