The Saturday Night Joke

A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Joseph's Hospital. She timidly asked, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?"

The operator said, "I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and room number of the patient?"

The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, Norma Findlay, Room 302."

The operator replied, "Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse's station for that room."

After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said,
"I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her
blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal and her
Physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow."

The grandmother said, "Thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good News."

The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?"

The grandmother said, "No, I'm Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells me shit." (H/T Hrothgar)

One of my favorite summer meals is pork steak, marinated in Teriyaki Sauce for several hours, then coated with garlic powder and placed on the good old Weber Kettle grill. I think know I'll be avoiding this product.

Impossible Foods’ latest meatless product is set to hit tables from Thursday: plant-based pork that claims to be tastier and healthier than the real deal.

The ground pork product will first be available in restaurants in the U.S., Hong Kong and Singapore, with further plans for retail expansion in those markets in the coming months. It marks the California-based company’s third commercial launch after ground beef and chicken nuggets as it seeks to solidify its position in the growing plant-based protein space.

Speaking in a first-on interview ahead of the launch, Impossible Foods’ president Dennis Woodside told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” that the pork alternative could beat the real deal in both taste and nutritional value.

Could beat? Yeah and I could vote a straight Dem ticket in 2022.

Hey Honey, we aren't remodeling the bathroom any time soon.

Researchers want to give the toilet a smart makeover — but we’re not talking about heated seats or bidet attachments.

Take the Stanford School of Medicine, where The Wall Street Journal reports that researchers are developing a scanner that can recognize the user’s unique “anal print,” or “distinctive features of their anoderm,” meaning the skin of the anal canal.

To pull it off, they installed a camera inside a toilet bowl and used machine learning algorithms to match stool samples to specific, uh, users. The system could even calculate “the flow rate and volume of urine using computer vision as a uroflowmeter,” according to the researchers’ 2020 paper.

One of our hobbies is bird feeding and watching. Squirrels are such bastards. Instead of being arrested these folks should be awarded medals.

This may be the biggest squirrel poaching bust ever.
One of the most common violations for a conservation officer to deal with is someone going over the legal limit. Officers with the Missouri Department of Conservation recently dealt with a case that may be the biggest squirrel poaching bust ever anywhere.

In a post on their Facebook page, the MDC reported Agents Brad Hadley and Eric Long got a tip about a group of non-residents who were squirrel hunting in the Current River Conservation Area and surrounding locations. The tip ended up being a good one as the officers quickly discovered the group of 16 had taken 471 squirrels over the prior two days.

WHY WE TURN DOWN THE RADIO WHILE WE’RE PARKING

The human brain may be amazing, but it can’t listen to Olivia Rodrigo and find a parking spot at the same time

But why must Olivia be silenced so that you can locate the perfect place to park?

The explanation is fairly straightforward. Under normal circumstances, listening to music while driving is a form of multitasking, explains cognitive scientist Art Markman, author of Brain Briefs. “That’s actually not terrible, because driving frankly isn’t that hard,” he says. “It doesn’t occupy our full mental resources.” In fact, some research suggests that music can help you keep up with the flow of traffic under ordinary conditions.

Irate contractor. Did he overreact or is the homeowner a ditz? You be the judge.

When you hire someone to fix things in your home, you are putting trust in a complete stranger. While you are paying them and it’s their job, you still are letting in a person you know nothing about in your home. They may do a half-hearted job or they might steal something from your home, you really never know.

A woman from Colorado trusted a job regarding the renovation of her shower and had a negative experience with the contractor she hired. She asked the contractor to not pay until she sees the finished bathroom, but the man didn’t take it very well and destroyed all the work he had just done.

A video of an angry contractor demolishing tiles in the shower that he himself put up went viral

It's a Saturday ONT. So, no current events, news and politics for the most part. How about some weird Saturday night stuff?

Scientists were puzzled by a bizarre case stdy: a 33-year-old male with a history of illicit drug use who’d been experiencing “a substantial amount of sperm passage from his rectum with ejaculation for the past two years,” according to study titled “A Curious Case of Rectal Ejaculation,” published last month in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science.

In crude terms, the unfortunate patient was jizzing out of his butt.

The man had experienced five days of testicular pain, doctors said, noting a “substantial amount of urine and sperm” coming from his rectum.

A CT scan of the man’s pelvis later revealed he was experiencing a chronic case of “rectourethral fistula,” an extremely rare condition in which there’s a new anatomical connection between the urethra and rectum.

And there is your Jr. High humor for the evening.............

The ONT Musical Interlude

On this day: 25 Sep 1980
John Bonham, drummer with Led Zeppelin, died aged 32 after a heavy drinking session. ‘Bonzo’ was found dead at guitarists Jimmy Page's house of what was described as asphyxiation, after inhaling his own vomit after excessive vodka consumption, (40 shots in 4 hours). During live sets his drum solo, ‘Moby Dick,’ would often last for half an hour and regularly featured his use of his bare hands. In 2007, Ludwig issued a limited edition drum kit in Bonham's memory. via thisdayinmusic.com

28 that is ballsy to release a fake pork product in Hong Kong. My guess is they have to discount the first time buyers and focus on the people who buy it a second or third time. Really they should focus on the people who buy it a tenth or eleventh time. I don't know many pork eaters who stop buying bacon after certain number of times unless they croak.

I tried some of those products a few years back. I reviewed them here for the fun of it and so no one else had to try them. The Beyond meat Italian Sausage was ok if made into a really good spaghetti. The Impossible Burger from BK was pretty gross, particularly the smell.

I can see people accepting this stuff because desire and cultural persuasion have an effect. But these things don't compare from my experience. Then again, the price of real meat is rising so fast I can see where they have an opportunity possibly.

30 Actually, these days with HIPAA they won't even admit that someone in particular is in the hospital.

Like all things government, the HIPAA regulations do more harm than good. That and the digital medical reporting act has done more harm to the health system than any other. Now the Dr's have to spend most of their time while with a patient filling out little boxes for some HS Diplomaed EEOC federal employee to check for errors and it's made it very difficult for relatives to see and help their family when in the hospital.

It's like the Federal Voting Commission; more trouble than it's worth and hasn't stopped any of the fraud. Just made the system more burdensome for those who are not familiar or are part of it.

36 I've noticed that they are boasting about the taste and nutritional value of the fake meat. What about texture? To me, that's just as important. They can make fake bacon bits out of soy, but the crunch is much different than properly cooked real bacon bits. The feel of the food in the mouth is just as important as taste.

39 Yeah, that cognitive "scientist" is wrong.

Driving is difficult, at least for those of us who pay attention, so we don't get run over by the people who treat driving like it's no big deal.

Here's a hint: You're driving something with a minimum weight of about 3,000 lbs, which, when moving at 65 mph down the road, can do incredible damage to itself and other objects.

Heck, I saw a car clipped just off the rear bumper by a car doing no more than about 25 mph, and the car that got clipped wound up on its roof.

41 So, as I was saying about horror, it has to be an instant reaction, it can't be portioned out over a long period of time.

DREAD can be sustained over a long time. Because it is non specific. It's just the idea that "something is wrong."

Horror is more specific, terror is even more specific than that, as it is tied to known elements.

Also, I am crazy and know nothing.

55 Yeah. Nurses are forbidden to tell patients how they are doing because only the Dr. can diagnose so only they can tell the patient what's going on.

Drs. can be really pissy about their prerogatives and position cause most of the time, the nurses could handle most of what comes into the ER as well as a Dr. And as for interpretation the tech has seen far more cases than most Drs. that sign off on the x-rays or tests.

The medical quild has made our health system very inefficient and in many cases deadly. They are soon going to find out that guilds don't fare well for long and they are brutally taken apart because they usually outlive their limited usefullness and start killing or injuring people or just making living too difficult.

They're worse than a union because they spend a lot of time hiding information and keeping it hid and enforcing their rules.

yes they are, but this is SoCal, we don't have AC, so baking is out from May to October, or so. fortunately, there are a couple commercial options i've found. hamburger buns are the same thing. most have soy flour in them. flour tortillas mostly are made with soybean oil, etc.

173 What is kind of sad is rabbits. They will burst from a completely safe position and run under the front of your car at night. They aren't suicidal, it's that their standard escape tactic is to run in front of predators and make a sharp turn as apparently they can turn better. So they think they are fooling your car.

183 Hey everybody. Hey ONT! Thanks MisHum!

To pull it off, they installed a camera inside a toilet bowl and used machine learning algorithms to match stool samples to specific, uh, users. The system could even calculate "the flow rate and volume of urine using computer vision as a uroflowmeter," according to the researchers' 2020 paper.

Stop the world! I wanna get off!

184 It wouldn't be all that difficult to modify a reservoir filler and an oversize reservoir to make your toilet more capable trouble is that they also changed the size of the "S" channel and it may cause more restriction with more water trying to get thru.

It had taken about 10 years for them to finally get the low flow toilets working better. One thing that happened was the toilet paper makers were persuaded to make the paper narrower than before so that it can fit in the more restrictive channel. They didn't really mind as it reduced the cost of making the roll yet they still charge the same or more. Reduction in both directions by at least 1/2" some were even reduced more than that as they were really big sheets.

What caused this, what was the reason the guy said he would not pay? People keep mentioning "good work". Judged by whom? In your case I am sure you are right. But we know the guys in the video? We know the details here?

anyway, I can only give you my very little experience with the issue. I had bad experiences with lawyers and some contractors. I don't think anyone is above question particularly when their work is there to be judged I have had good experiences with electrictians though. Ours is a proud vet. He is in major demand.

360 Commentators on American society often speak of the 'two Americas.'
America is divided, they say, between, liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, blue staters and red staters, rich and poor, black and white, etc.
But there is another division in the United States that is rarely if ever, talked about - the division between those teenagers who go to college and those who join America's armed forces.

372 Today has been the pits. Daughter's best friend died of Covid this morninng. Anna had been admitted to the hospital Monday, put on a ventilator, and not allowed to see her husband, any of her kids, or any of the rest of her family. This should not have happened to a dog, much less a sweetheart like Anna. Reading through the information her family posted on Anna's FB page, it sounds like the whole stinking mess was a total, avoidable FUBAR. Spent a couple hours with daughter this afternoon, trying to give her some support. Her husband hardly knew Anna, and Anna had moved to Arkansas years ago. I'm about the only person my daughter knows who had more than a passing acquaintance with her, so daughter can't even talk to anyone else.

When you finish, if you like Rushdie you might also like Mark Helprin (not to be confused with halprin who's a journalist asshole). A good book to start is Freddy and Fredericka which is fun also A Winter's Tale which is probably more Rushdie-like. A Soldier of the Great War is also very good but can be a bit sad as war is sad.

I wouldn't recommend it for internal use, but dropping some onto a wound dressing provides powerful antibacterial protection. Wound care centers use silver impregnated dressings all the time.

The country parts of PA have always provided a lot of servicemen. I used to go to diners in Central PA, they would have pics of the young people who joined upon display. I always respected that.

It is amazing how few serve these days. Most don't think of it as even an option. Too bad for them, because many will look back and see the opportunities lost and benefits they could have had.

I believe that a lot still do, but fewer and fewer from the burbs. I'm in a very rural part of Western PA, and it's still the plan for many local kids, including those who are talented, well-raised and far more intelligent than I am. The VFW and Legion halls around here are always packed, and it's not just the older crowd, not by a long shot. And the pictures still go up in the diners, but more and more, the conversations under those pictures are full of fear and uncertainty about what those kids might be ordered to do.

imo they are wrong. I don't doubt many see it that way, they have been misguided. How many people join the Guard and Reserves and are helped to pay for college? How many do a short hitch and get tons to pay for college?

I know in the service itself, you pretty much need to advance your education to advance, and that is not just officers. I haven't followed it in some time but that was the case no long ago. I don't doubt most won't even consider military service. But if they think anyone who joins is a loser, then they are the losers. And at some point you have to forget what others think, in the end, randos don't matter a hill of beans and they wont be there for you anyway.

As does my son. The failing is on me. I was born and raised Catholic. But, in defense of the Catholic church, it's not nearly as stodgy and political as it was in olden times. I get the impression Anna's whole family locked themselves in an echo chamber and wasn't prepared to listen to anyone outside their group. Being locked up and hearing nothing but the Dems with bylines didn't help.

This is particularly hard on daughter since this is the first time she's had to deal with the death of a close friend of her own age. Her grandmother and great-aunt were in their late 90S when they passed. This is kind of like the discussion on the let thread down below of the difference of losing a sick, elderly let and a pet that should have had many years to go. Anna was only forty or so.

We got them once or twice over the years, but to be honest the main thing was to wait them out. I tried a few other things but won't get into it. Really it came down to waiting them out. They say the key is they need a water source, cut that off and they wont last long.

naturally, having found a very low dose of methimazole that treats the issue, the quacks at the VA keep wanting to reduce my dose, which brings back the symptoms both times they tried that shit. the last idiot who started down that road got an ass chewing as to why we were not going to try that a third time.

575 The Amtrak derailment today in Montana was in the middle of some desolate country. I can't imagine the logistics involved to rescue and evacuate the passengers and crew. Wonder where they had to airlift the injured and dead to.

Logistics are fascinating to me.

Posted by: four seasons at September 26, 2021 12:29 AM (oT1NJ)

Joplin is not all that far from Shelby, and passengers who were not injured were bused to hotels in Shelby, which sits at the intersection of I-15 and U.S. rte. 2. It's not really desolate; just farm and ranch country.

Heh. I came in from working outside about 6:30, had a bite to eat, and felt sleepy, so went down for a nap. Slept until midnight. Got up to read the ONT.

578 Pulled the last of the carrots out of the garden today and pickled them. Cayenne and dill with garlic. Should be darned tasty with V8 and a hit of vodka.

Beans didn't do well this year, or I would have pickled them, too. I still have one jar left from last year.

The strawberries never made it from the garden to the house. I can't imagine what might have occurred on that short trip. Hmm... So, this year no strawberry-blueberry jam. But that won me a ribbon at the state fair three years ago, so I will make more next year when I put in more strawberries.

Very satisfying seeing those lovely jars all lined up.

580 For those who have issues staying asleep, sometimes it's apnea. Have a sleep study done. They can do those at home now. I won't sleep more than two hours without a cpap and I'm not really sleeping anyway, just snorting. Between that and trazodone, I sleep pretty well now. Just a thought.

nope: not a P-Shop. being a pharmacy household, we have a collection of old product containers, including one for whooping cough tablets that has a similar ingredient list, except that the first line is heroin, not morphine.

586 speaking of the derailment, it looks like the last cars in the train are what came loose... mechanical failure in a car, or something with the rails?

589 On the driving article, I do notice that consciously I turn off the radio and stop talking when visibility gets bad in dark, rainy, or snowy weather.

But I fkn hate when "writers" get cute and feel compelled to inject their own irrelevant personal details, like crappy musical tastes or faggy drink choices, into the story to make it all about them. Stick to the story, scribe, nobody gives two shits about you!

591 From the bad photos of the derailment, it looks like the back cars, so maybe slid off the trucks. One photo seems to show the trucks out of whack. Hard to say. Maybe they hit something but then the locomotives would have gone over too.

However it happened, how terrifying. And tragic. Better there than in a city, but still.
