Daily Tech News 12 September 2021

Top Story

  • Quick question not relating to computers: What's a reasonable minimum rating of pressure washer for cleaning a modest-sized back deck and front steps? Is 125 Bar going to do a reasonable job or just be a waste of money?

  • How to install Windows 11 without an internet connection. (Hot Hardware)

Microsoft really wants to lock your Windows login to an online account. Because fuck you, that's why.

I just got a brand new Windows 10 laptop and didn't have to bother with that, but they seem to be ramping up their efforts with Win 11.

Tech News

  • Epic is appealing the Apple ruling. (Thurrott.com)

There's a lot of argument over what the ruling actually ruled. Many of the claims are patently false - e.g. those claiming that the judge made a positive ruling that Apple was not guilty of anticompetitive behaviour, rather than there just being insufficient evidence presented. The ruling said
these factors alone do not show antitrust conduct
Epic is appealing that, but I'm not sure of the details yet since there aren't any details yet.

  • If accusing people of copyright infringement doesn't get a site taken down just accuse them of hosting CSAM. (TorrentFreak)

Boom, they're deindexed. And most important, it doesn't matter that it's not true.

  • A pro-China misinformation campaign is attempting to exploit political division in the US. (CNN)

    Yes, we call that CNN.

  • China has banned new video games. (Reuters)
This story was corrected to say China "slows down" approvals, not "suspended", in headline and paragraph 1 and 2 after SCMP clarifies. Also, corrects paragraph 2 to say China's strategy emerged after a meeting and not at the meeting.
As I said, China has banned new video games.

  • China tells Tencent and Netease to focus less on profit. (CNN)

Reminder: However bad things are where you live, you don't have a monopoly on power-crazed idiot assholes. They're everywhere, ruining everything for everyone.

  • The average quality of the information in a social network is inversely proportional to the square of the size of the network. (Meta.Ath0)

And that's being optimistic, excluding deliberate fraud and bias on the part of the network.

Details from Scientific American. They're not what they once were, if they ever was, but at least the authors of this article are aware of the dangers of trying to combat this.
But who decides what is fake or manipulative and what is not? Information can come with warning labels such as the ones Facebook and Twitter have started providing, but can the people who apply those labels be trusted? The risk that such measures could deliberately or inadvertently suppress free speech, which is vital for robust democracies, is real. The dominance of social media platforms with global reach and close ties with governments further complicates the possibilities.

  • AMD expects to grow next year. (Tom's Hardware)

They're likely correct. They'll still be supply-constrained through the end of 2022, but less so than right now as new factories and new processes continue to come. They're switching to 6nm for Rembrandt - which has just started production and will ship in a few months - and 5nm for, um, I think it's Raphael, late next year.

In the meantime they're focusing on profits. Since they sell out of everything they can make, they want to focus on the most expensive parts. The chiplets in a Ryzen 5600X and a Threadripper Pro 5995WX are identical, but the profit margin on the Threadripper is far higher.

  • The best budget 4K resin-based 3D printer money can't buy, maybe. (Tom's Hardware)

The Elegoo Mars 3 has a resolution of 4098x2560 and can't be yours for just $300. I know Elegoo mostly from their electronics hobby kits which are also perpetually out of stock.

2 I am not an expert on pressure washers. But I just bought a Riyobi. I think it was about 1800 or 2000 psi. About what you are thinking about at 185 bar. And I think it is good for your purpose. I have used mine a couple days. It will take dirt off of almost anything. And I have to be careful or it will strip the paint off of decking etc. Before buying, I asked the guy at Home Depot, and he felt it was a good amount of power.

Posted by: MikeM at September 12, 2021 02:35 AM (6WyvU)

3 The one I'm looking at is 1820 PSI, so pretty similar.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at September 12, 2021 02:37 AM (MqQvv)

4 Thanks for the 3D printer review. I read it all and such a review was a great intro to sort of the state of the consumer art and what one needs to think about. I need to go read Chitubox now.

Posted by: MikeM at September 12, 2021 02:49 AM (6WyvU)

5 I've got a Riyobi too. 2300 psi. All I've used it for so far is the driveway. It's effective.

I'd make a joke about Byzantine generals here (see link in nic for background if you haven't heard of them), but I think we may already have some of those in the upper echelons.

9 Microsoft really wants to lock your Windows login to an online account. Because fuck you, that's why.

I agree, it sucks, but isn't that exactly what Google is doing with Chromebooks? Or Apple with its ecosystem? It's not really fair to Microsoft to make the play be 1995 rules when their competition is here in 2021.

13 My experience with a '1800 PSI' pressure washer was (still have it, but it's in the basement) was not good. An Italian-made electric, the initial pressure may have been 1800 but the running was less. That, by the way, is the hook: the advertised pressure is what you get with the initial trigger press -- the running pressure is usually lower.

As Carson Buske used to say: Save your money and buy better whiskey.

Posted by: lurk at September 12, 2021 04:03 AM (MIODZ)

14 no idea what a "bar" is, with pressure washers in mind, but 125 PSI should to the trick for most normal cleaning needs.

15 w*rking pressure is also a function of the nozzle setting... tighten that bitch down, and look for dirt, etc, to didi mau when the water hits it.

just don't hit yourself at the same time. it tickles.

16 A strong pressure washer on a wood deck will surely 'bring out the grain'. IOW, it will remove soft wood, leaving the harder grain raised. If you want it to stay smooth I'd bleach it instead.

Posted by: Jimco Industries at September 12, 2021 04:15 AM (buTO7)

17 I've had a couple of 2k psi pressure washers, electric -- current operating count --

Zero. If I buy another one, it will be gas engine powered, 3k psi with a rotary pressure head attachment. Just because.

18 okay, so i just checked the China Freight web page, and i have the ~$80/1750 PSI pressure washer, and it cleans everything i need cleaned, to including pealing up sand stone patio flag stones, if i'm not careful.

plenty powerful, unless you are removing barnacles, etc.

22 I borrowed a friend's gas-powered pressure washer to blast my deck. Took of all of the gray wood and left it looking like new. Had to use a belt sander to smooth out the rails. Also put down new coats of Thomson's stain/shield.

my electric harbor freight model is around 1088 - 2000 psi and works like a champ on everything we've tried it on - got it specifically to remove paint from the deck & rails before repainting, but also cleans the siding nicely ...

It's a goal of the globalists in general.

"You will own nothing and be happy" was not a slip of the tongue, they actually thought that people would applaud them for their foresight, rather than sit here horrified and wonder where we can get enough pine tar and feathers for the whole lot of 'em.

32 Mornin', folk,

Up early for what I hope is the last time before I get back home today. Linda sleeps later than I do, so I get up, get dressed, and play on the computer for a while. At 6 I'll run out to the local Walmart to get some microwaveable food for us, and some stocks for my refrigerator at home. For those who wondered, no, it was not a real mess to clean out. Some stuff had to be thrown away, it had thawed and then refrozen and wasn't safe, but the box was clean and didn't smell.

We ought to get home for about noon. I'll have lunch and a nap, a luxurious shave, and a celebratory pipe.

48 It occurs to me that I will need to order more razor blades soon. I get 2-3 shaves with each blade, and I shave every 48 hours generally; but I have 7 razors, so each gets its blade changed on the first or so of the month. Thus I use 7 blades a month.

It's a hobby, what can I say.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at September 12, 2021 05:03 AM (bz/l6)

49 2-3 shaves per razor? I get about three weeks out of mine, shaving every day. You must have a steel wire beard.

50 Do not clean a wooden deck with a pressure washer. You are going to rip open the fibers of the wood and force water into it. That will accelerate the degradation of it. Especially if you live in an area where that moisture will freeze and expand.

52 Those little Home Depot pressure washers are garbage. Buy a petrol powered one and get a pressure reducing wand. Then the pressuer is whatever works and you have a worthy tool for many other uses. Well worth the extra money.

Linux +Firefox +uckduckgo for the win!

Ubuntu seems to be stepping up the frequency of updates, but it's a painless process that doesn't seem to change your personal settings or install background cr@p. (As far as I can tell)

The only downside is some applications simply will not run on a non windows platform, but they are few.

55 I know thread is dead, but why are people even bothering to try to install Win11? Win7 still works fine for me in this old PC tower. If it becomes corrupted and/or unfixable, I will just load the latest and greatest from Linux. I run Linux Mint in other machines, and like it well enough.

If I were Dictator of the World, I would enact a law that software manufacturers could only maintain ownership of their source code for a given product as long as they continue to provide worthwhile support for that product. Failing that, they would be required to release the source code to the public domain.
