67 I'm never sure if I like this style of painting or not. It's certainly not among my favorites but it is interesting. I suspect the appeal is in the way everything stands out: each figure, each leaf of the plants, even the way each object has its own color scheme. And Rousseau uses unusual combinations of color. Like I said, it's interesting.

Is it 'great art'? Not to me. Is it worth viewing? Yep!

Art related question - do darker areolae help babies find them? Doesn't seem right - males have them. And babies can sniff out, literally, breasts through clothing.

Yup. If you click on the image, you should get a slightly better resolution version. And there is more to see, the native guy is more visible etc. And the two lions, easier to see their interesting eyes. A lot of triangles in the image I feel.

Although not pictured due to the angles involved, Rousseau confirmed during interviews at the time that the couch is actually a litter. There are attachments for poles that run through the base of the piece to allow it (and the woman recumbent upon it) to be carried by attendants. Such contrivances had become unusual by that time in Europe, but they were historically more common. Although not directly addressed by Rousseau, it can be assumed based on size and estimated weight that the vehicle was moved by eight litter-bearers, with two on each corner.

Well, there are a few mitigating factors that keep babies from nursing on men. One, babies are traditionally with their mothers a lot. Two, when babies cry, the mothers whip out their boobs quickly, because if they didn't, they'd explode. And Three, If a dude tries nursing a baby with his hairy-ass, milkless man-nipples -- in a sane society -- he should be beaten about the head and neck until unconscious.

191 Here's a thought. Want to force Biden's hand on the vaccine mandate?

Republicans completely control Arizona, Georgia, Florida and at least a dozen and a half other states, right?

What if DeSantis suggests that the legislature in his state enacts Texas style abortion restrictions? Every single other Republican state can do the same thing. Make it loudly known that a) it's the right thing to do and b) this is DIRECTLY a result of Biden's attempt to force people essentially by gunpoint to get a vaccine they don't want.

When liberal women who are entirely Democrat voters hoot and holler, let the governors of these states say they'll drop the support of the abortion law if the Biden administration quits strong arming on the vaccine.

Let these disgusting Democrats defend that they are more concerned with killing the unborn than they are about their covid obsession.

203 The fact that there are still die hard believers in this madness show that these people are:
Illiterate, as there is enough information available to read that support an opposing view.
Innumerate, as again there is enough data available to see that we are being willfully mislead.
Ignorant, the road to totalitarianisms is well documented throughout history, and that useful fools will face the ditch and take a bullet in the back of the head, just like those they sent before them.

Where in God's name is the opposition party? Why is there no hew and cry from the Republican party on a national level?

230 This commment from the previous thread worth re-posting. As a former software systems analyst/developer, I'm all about "root cause analysis," and this rings true on every level now (from insane national debt to stolen elections to vaccination refusal to importing foreign invaders, etc.); well reasoned and said, as usual, Mannix:

-------

I think you essentially nailed the root cause. It is more general than that, I think, but this is basically it. It's distrust. We've gone from high-trust to general mistrust to active distrust with shocking rapidity. And without trust, everything fails. Our system more or less depends on a high-trust environment. It was born from a high-trust environment and assumes trust as a given in most cases (the systems to reconcile broken trust - like courts and contracts - are slow and have low throughput and can be effective only if most people don't need them).

Ending high-trust also means ending vicarious trust (I trust you because someone I trust trusts you), which blows our system to pieces. And we've ended high trust and are moving toward zero trust, and the system is blowing to pieces.

286 @213 Mike M- They had Trump hemmed in.. If he would have started to shitcan generals who openly defied him as they said they were willing to do, they would have screamed "coup" and had him removed immediately. This would have been done with the support of Republicans in line with the Dems. They were chomping at the bit before Nov 3, you know the steal they had planned if just plain removal beforehand didn't happen. They were daring and dying for Trump to declare martial law and act on the rioters in cities last summer. If he would have done that, congress would have had the military remove his ass.
I just get tired of all the BS finger-pointing done here at AoS rather than accepting the glaring reality of the entire situation beginning in Nov 2016 to Nov 3, 2020. We were living through extraordinary times then as we are now. What has happened was going to happen regardless as I have said with a lawless element that exists in both political parties. Blaming Trump for not doing this or that is a f'ing waste of time just as waiting for a limp dick Republican Party to have some sort of miracle epiphany and suddenly do the right thing and then when they don't whining about it. I think it may be more complex than that. Trust has become fragmented, tribalized--you trust those within "your tribe" and distrust those outside "your tribe", with a bit more for "allied tribes" and less for "enemy tribes".

I've said for years there are multiple cultures within the United States now, the two main ones grown roughly (but not EXACTLY) from the same root. This is rapidly moving to multiple NATIONS. That isn't a recipe for a stable state.

Right. You can't survive without trust, not really. You can hack it as a lone wolf, but that's a hard, dangerous and poor way to live. So when you destroy trust in general, you rely on trust in the specific: people you directly know. It all shrinks. It becomes tribes.

In another life I worked in a warehouse environment where the unskilled folks on the floor were making base 20-30% more than the skilled and educated office folks. That was the late 90s.

There was also a really stupid policy that someone switching to a position on a different job scale got put at the pay level closest to the old one. This once resulted in someone coming in day one making more than multi-year veterans. Nearly resulted in several key people walking out as a result.

Joint's gone now, parent company's been bought out several times. Bad management has consequences.

351 Fun fact: the paint used to color the couch in this famous work by Rousseau is fugitive; that is, it has faded dramatically over time. It started to fade almost as soon as he finished it. Rousseau, like the famous portraitist Reynolds, was a poor technician to the point of almost criminal carelessness. Museums devote entire restoration teams to keep the work such artists from fading or even disintegrating over time. Pollack is also notorious in that regard.

I read that story then clicked the one in the sidebar, about how Cornell U has achieved a 95% vaccination rate for staff and faculty -- but still has 5x more Covid cases this Sept. than it did last Sept. (and it's not because of more testing, they actually tested nearly 2,000 more people last Sept. than they did this Sept.).

This is consistent with what we've seen from Israel and other places, where a super-high vaccination rate in populations does absolutely nothing to stop Covid infections from rising sharply.

But that won't stop Slow Joe and his puppeteers from continuing to blame "the unvaccinated" for spreading Covid.

And it won't stop Slow Joe and his clown posse from continuing to demand that everybody must get vaccinated, even though the CDC has admitted that the vaccines don't stop transmission of the virus.

Good point. I've worked on regulatory matters for some large banks post-Sarbanes Oxley, and I'm here to tell you that the large banks will never be in compliance. They will always be working toward it, because the cost of fully complying with government mandates would put them out of business. It is a matter of managing where they are going to be out of compliance and how big the risk is. The auditors know it and always have "concerns."

Manager was still 'friends' with the Woman who I had replaced, when she quit as an employee and started doing contract work. Well, after two weeks there, I was suddenly 'let go' after those two went to lunch one day.

Well... so now two young kids, just moved to Denver, and no job. Headhunter called wondering what happened.... and he had a possible position with a competing company. Well, long story short, 3 years later I'm in CHARGE of Tech training at the new company, and we had driven the other company out of business.... My company was being investigated by the Department of Labor (and I was interviewed a couple of times by them) a few years ago, and their representative told me that we were supposed to be treated similar to technical employees (I suspect owing to the Service Contract Act of 1965) -- and this was owing to a complaint about minimum wage laws or something. Oh well, it's all academic now that we no longer live in a nation of laws ...

My dad had a version of this. He worked for a quasi-govt institution that needed to get rid of of some people. But they couldn't lay off anyone due to some reason, I think it was collective bargaining or something, I don't remember exactly.

So they offered a ridiculously generous package to leave and tons of people - including my dad - took it. Then 3-4 months later my dad went back there as a consultant for 2X his previous pay and stayed there for 18 months.

The severance included a lifetime pension, that he is still getting to this day, 25+ years later.

It's like the execs of the place woke up one day and asked themselves what is the absolute worst financial move we can make, and made it.

This is like the hours restrictions and lockdowns - utterly counterproductive.

When everything but the supermarket is closed, people will go to the supermarket (if nothing else, to relieve stultifying boredom). More customers. When you restrict hours but increase customers, the throughput in terms of customers per hour will increase. The time spent in close quarters in public will increase, because both the shopping population has increased (or, at best, remained flat) and the time they have to move through the store has decreased.

I'm praying you round filed them.
Posted by: rickb223 at September 10, 2021 10:08 AM (OCTRt)

The managers I round filed, because we were not hiring managers, just teachers... Other Lady? We were teaching Microsoft Cert classes, MS did an online survey of your teaching by every student of every class... I just forwarded her report back to her, with no comment (there was a reason they went out of business.... LOL).

428 Supply and demand. There is no shortage of people to do entry-level administrative stuff in an office. There is a shortage of people to flip burgers.
Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at September 10, 2021 10:07 AM (BMmaB)

__

True. But the cause of that shortage is extra UI benefits. Burger flipper got laid off because restaurants closed. They went on UI and stayed on UI even when restaurants opened back up. Entry level office workers didn't get laid off, they went remote. Hence the fucked-up-ness of the labor market.

429 And how they are doing it is just stupid. They check your packages for more than 6 beers, or a bottle of wine. More, and they take it. Which means, you have to go to the Store EVERY DAY... you can't buy a case to last you a few days. ...

Man, I'd be in wild violation. I buy alcohol about once per year. I lay in the booze I like, many cases of beer, etc. I am not a big drinker and I hate going to the big liquor stores that carry what I like, so I lay in stocks and deplete them over time.

I'd be a hardened criminal in Aussieland, I guess.

There's probably some kind of "if...maybe...could...possibly..." BS rationale but really it's just more authoritarian cram-down for the sake of authoritarian cram-down.

The opening phrase I see and hate most in comments these days, usually from the twitterati and always-online is, "I mean,".

Even when it's their first comment on the thread. I swear every other comment at Polygon, a videogame site, starts with "I mean,". It's as bad as " That's what I'm talking about!", when they weren't talking about anything.
