Beginner Problem - Black To Play

6rk/p3p2p/1p2Pp2/2p2P2/2P1nBr1/1P6/P6P/3R1R1K b - - 0 1

It's mate in 2:

1...Rg1+
2.Rxg1 Nf2#

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20210724 Problem 2.jpg
r3rbk1/ppq2p1p/4pp2/1bP5/1Pp3N1/P2Q4/3N1PPP/3R1RK1 w - - 0 1

1.Nxf6+ Kg7
2.Qxh7+ Kxf6
3.Ne4+ Ke7

If 3...Ke5 then 4.f4#

4.Qh4+ f6
5.Qxf6#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20210724 Problem 3.jpg
5rk1/p1p2ppp/1bQ5/3N4/2r3q1/P4R2/KPP3P1/7R w - - 0 1

Answer:

1.Qg6 Qxg6

1...fxg6 results in 2.Ne7+ Kh8 3.Rxf8#

1...hxg6 gets you an immediate 2.Ne7#

2.Ne7+ Kh8
3.Nxg6+ Kg8 ( or 3...fxg6 4.Rxf8#)

4.Ne7+ Kh8
5.Rxh7+ Kxh7
6.Rh3+ Rh4

A throwaway check only a machine would find or play.

7.Rxh4#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

12 Hey, all,

I came in to the Pet Thread late. Looks like I missed some good stuff.

The two ladies in the B & W pic are not anyone I recognize, though when MPPPP or some other knowledgeable comes up with the name, I might recognize it.

The pic with the pink Cadillac: Did GM actually offer a pink color from the factory in 1959 or whenever it was? Or are the ones we've seen in recent years all been repainted from some other factory shade?

51 So I just spent about more than an hour and a half watching a video from "Church Militant" (the traditionalist, conservative RC site) about RC seminarians being persecuted and kicked out of seminary because they spoke up about the sexual abuse at seminaries and were traditionalist RCs. Why does this matter to me even though I'm not a seminarian or a RC? Because it breaks my heart that men who have a genuine call to ministry and love their church and the people are sidelined by corrupt clergy.

There's also a vide below of persecuted priests who have been sidelined because they have either been critical of the Bishops (Some of you are aware of Fr. James Altman) by not speaking about leftism in the church or the culture of homosexual predation in the church .And yes, I recognize there are clergy abusers in many churches, but these stories are painful but important to listen to.

I loved the setting and most of the characters. But the writer and creator never seemed actually to let them have any real crises that changed their lives. Outside things changed their lives, WWI and the economic upheavals that followed, but in their personal lives everybody ended up happy. Which may be why viewers loved it.

I wanted to slap Lady Mary -- that was the dark-haired daughter played by Michelle Dockerty.

78 The other value to Downton Abbey is that for most of its storyline it's contemporary with Dorothy L. Sayers' early Lord Peter Wimsey mystery novels, which are 1920s stories (and written then). So it gives you a handle on how Lord Peter's world would have looked.

For that matter, Before the Fact, the novel that's the basis for Suspicion, the Hitchcock film with Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine? It was published in 1932 and covers about 10 years in the lives of the characters. It too would have been part of Abbey's world.

I also duly noted that he had closed off his comments and didn't mention the tweets, screen captured and posted by Andy Ngo. I did truly enjoy the Beyond Black because I love dark roast but nope, you screwed the pooch.

My puzzle is why people don't open the doors of their cars on a hot afternoon and let the air inside flow out before climbing in, and why they don't put up sunshades (they're cheap at Walmart) if they're going to leave the car in the hot sun for any length of time. And why they don't park in the shade if there's some to be had.

I suspect a lot of them are doing internet things and couldn't care less about their vehicles, but here's the car answer:

You shouldn't drive off immediately after cranking your car. You've noticed that it revs a bit higher than normal at startup? Wait until that ends and it drops down to 700-1000 rpms (or whatever is normal in your vehicle), and THEN put it in gear and drive away. And don't floor it immediately for the same reason.

Let the engine get some fluids circulating first.

If you haven't read them and would like suggestions for contemplative reading you might take a look at "The Practice of the Presence of God" by Brother Lawrence who lived in the 1600's in France. He was big on experiencing God in daily life in simple ways. Also the complete letters of Francois Fenelon who was a Cardinal in the 1600s and wrote letters of spiritual direction (I'm biased in favor of Fenelon of course ) Also, "A Testament of Devotion" by Thomas Kelly who was a Quaker who died in the 1940s.
I would recommend these on the book thread but I'm almost always at church or on my way to church when the book thread comes up.

I park about 2 blocks from my office on a side street that gets moderate shade most of the day. At lunch I stroll out and wipe off any bird residue.

Kurt Russell is probably 70 years old now, if not a bit more. Remember, he was a child actor in the '60s. He probably doesn't give a damn what any SJWs think.

In the first episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. I ever saw, he was the guest star -- the "innocent" person, the non-espionage character, that they featured in each story. He was about 11 or 12. So was I. (But I identified with Robert Vaughn's Napoleon Solo, of course.)

If you're not following the She-Man/Kevin Smith saga, it's quite amusing. Once again, Hollywood and the Sellouts appropriated a nostalgic property and "rebooted" it, producing feces.

374 Went to a Flip Wilson dress rehearsal when he had a show on the TV. Recall standing in line to get in when a guy came by wanting to know if anybody want to see the Dean Martin Show immediately afterward, so we saw both. Circa 1969. All I recall about the Wilson show was they had Marcel Marceau. I hate mimes.

Remember the Las Vegas shooting? Weird how it's just disappeared. Nothing to see here, move along.
