DJIA Plunges 725 Points on Heightened Covid Fears; Puddinhead Joe Laughs It Off

You know, if they shutdown again, there might not be an economy left to reopen.

But Karen's Gonna Karen.

JUL 19, 2021 4:38PM EDT
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 863 points, or 2.5%, as of 1:14 p.m. EDT on July 19, as investors send travel, banking, and energy company stocks down sharply. Today's sharp sell-off, which is on track to be the Dow's worst day since last October, is happening as cases of COVID-19 surge in the U.S. and around the world, threatening to derail a strong economic recovery.

Joe Biden: the palsied hand at the wheel.

With people on edge, Biden took to the podium to make matters even worse with an unbelievably tone-deaf and economically illiterate response.

Charlie Spiering
@charliespiering

"It turns out capitalism is alive and well" says Joe Biden after stock market drops over 700 points -- also promises "long-term boom"

So he blamed the market drop on... capitalism?

It's not capitalism that's forcing economic shutdowns on the world, Puddin'head. It's governments, chiefly those with a socialist bent.

Biden also claimed that "no serious economist" expects the inflation he's creating to persist:

Charlie Spiering
@charliespiering

Joe Biden: "There's nobody suggesting there's unchecked inflation is on the way. No serious economist."

In saying that, he reported that his own Treasury Secretary Janet Yellin was "no serious economist," as she says that we can expect inflation "for several more months," which is Government Hack-Speak for "years:"

Puddin'head Joe wasn't quite done reassuring us on inflation just yet, as he also wanted to tell us that his plan to beat inflation is to, apparently, create so much inflation that we inflate our way out of inflation.

That made sense to this CNN "journalist." Inflating our way out of inflation. Pumping out so many increasingly-debased dollars that inflation's head will spin and it will just give up in exhaustion.

Here's me, in a Biden-like strained whisper:

The crash is coming. Protect yourselves.

But the TWEETS! Mwah, the tweets are magnifique.

DeSantis has a MUCH better track record than Trump did before running for the White House. I think just having someone that unabashedly backed Trump and ran on that is pretty encouraging.

I don't believe Trump is the uber conservative some think he is. I'm sure DeSantis or whoever is going to do something "not conservative" I can give you a pretty long list of what Trump did that we're now supposed to look the other way.

In all that, he earned reelection on the order of maybe 17 million more votes, with hourly threats against his life, businesses, friends and family.

He brings together "coalitions" that are absolutely unheard of in the Republican Party. All without selling us out. And we mostly take it for granted because he makes it look easy. He's also a known quantity that can't be easily tarred by made up stories. Yes, he remains the very obvious answer.

250 "the Steal Rules could have been, and should have been, challenged before the election."

To be fair, the Right has always accepted that there is significant vote fraud that we must overcome. I remember jokes about needing enough, since Bush V Gore. I think this was that. Except this time no one imagined the audacity of volume and coverup. I don't believe DeSantis would have done anything different.

"He does not do looking ahead nor follow through. Everything's seat of the pants, improv. And then forgotten."

That's a fair criticism.

Just saw a story about this on KSTP-TV Channel 5, where their medical advisor could get Opioids for her back spasms, but could not get Celebrex due to Insurance pre-approval on a weekend.

Her pharmacy wanted $200 for the Celebrex, Good RX found it for about $20.00 elsewhere.

The VAERS website records anyone who had any adverse effect after getting a vaccine. That doesn't mean the adverse effect was CAUSED by the vaccine.

You: "I know a guy who got the vaccine and three days later got hit by a bus! Don't take the vaccine! It causes you to get hit by buses!"

If you give a drug to 100 million people, a certain percentage of them are going to have heart attacks, or get hit by buses, or get athlete's foot, or win the lottery afterward.

But rather than look back at that we need to look at the Republican state legislators who were warned repeatedly by the Trump Campaign and by conservative pundits and activists that their state voting laws were being violated in the runup to the election. Those legislators did noting and are still in office. Why do they get to escape responsibility? It is their Constitutional duty to protect the voting laws of their state.

Rome's currency had been debased for centuries before it collapsed (quite rapidly). It was a crisis in confidence. The currency wasn't being arbitraged for its true value in raw metal, it functioned like fiat.

In order for a currency to be worth its commodity value rather than something arbitrary, it needs to be possible to convert it back and forth and someone needs to be doing arbitrage to force that alignment.

You have to be careful here. Yes, those people were ill anyway, but "having a condition" and "at death's door" are two different things.

People live for years with all kinds of health conditions, sometimes many years.

Would they have died eventually if they hadn't gotten COVID? Of course. Did they die significantly sooner than if they hadn't gotten COVID? That's the important issue, and you aren't going to get that from journalism, much less some rando blog.

Prices are just that equilibrium we reach between how much currency is out there - which is just a promise and not intrinsic wealth - and goods - which are wealth, but need some kind of medium to trade unless we all go barter.

For the last several years, we've printed currency out the ass. Now, we're printing more wealth to encourage people to make less goods. Prices WILL go up. They have to - or else everyone setting their prices are fools.

Rome was shipping large amounts of gold to Eastern markets for silk and luxury goods and none came back. Money paid out to barbs on the border sometimes came back in trade. But there was an overall shortage in raw metals in Rome during the empire. The crisis of the third century caused an explosion in the number of "customers" for bullion - troops being bribed to revolt/stay loyal and the amount of actual gold/silver hit just about 0.

Diocletian and the economists managed to save the military situation, but less good with getting regular coins back in circulation. I think the Byzantines finally made a new gold coin that had a fixed metal ratio that people started to trust, even outside the empire.
