GRIFT LEFT AND RIGHT

A comment from last rant, wherein the Black Rifle Coffee Company brouhaha was being discussed:

Wow. It's sad that every single public figure on the Right is a grifter. It's like a law or something. And it's sad that we're just such an in-joke on the Left. They just make some nice noises, build goodwill, make a gazillion bucks off of it, and then drop the punchline and high-five each other for rooking us, yet again.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at July 16, 2021 11:05 AM (7Ttpp)

Yeah, the lefties were all laughing about this on twitter last week about this. It was infuriating, but undeniable.

The grift has been going on for a long time. The Tea Party was actually killed by grifters.

Back during the Obama years, I used to get garbage fund-raising emails with urgent, even frantic subject lines such as "HELP US REPEAL OBAMACARE!". I knew they were garbage because there were simply not enough Repubican votes to pass any such legislation, let alone override Obama's veto that would certainly follow. But I think that the Tea Party appealed to older Americans who were far more trusting and not skeptical about such things, and they got taken to the cleaners. So they sent their money to Tea Party PACs and Super-PACs that spent the money mainly on their own salaries and benefits.

There is a fine line between grift and and out-and-out scam, and I think the Tea Party Super-PACs were pretty much all scams.

So, assuming the right is more susceptible to grift than the left, why should that be?

My answer is that this isn't necessarily true, but rather left grift just looks different than right grift.

Not that there aren't left wing grifters. Shaun 'Talcum X' King is a good example of one, and has grifting has become so flagrant that even some of the lefties are grumbling about it. I guess Robin DiAngelo would be another example, selling guilt to white people at $25,000 a pop. But these are exceptions to what I am about to describe.

The difference is, the right has to actually go to people and ask them directly for money. By contrast, the left already controls any number of investment portfolios, endowments, grants, slush funds and other cash flows. Look at Hannah-Nicole Jones, the architect of the 1619 Project. Her background is in journalism, but she now occupies a tenured position at Harvard Howard University, having turned down a similar position at UNC. She has no academic experience. How did that happen? Well, all of these institutions are controlled by lefties who know how to dispense money where they think it should go.

She is also a recipient of a 2017 MacArthur Fellowship, so this wasn't her first grift. The MacArthur Foundation has been run by lefties for decades.

My other favorite example of this sort of thing is Jamie Gorelick, whose malfeasance in the 9/11 attacks has never been adequately investigated, probably because she managed to get herself appointed to the 9/11 Commission. And then, despite having no previous training nor experience in finance, Gorelick was appointed Vice Chairman of Fannie Mae from 1997 to 2003. During that time, there was a scandal involving $9 billion in unrecorded losses. Meanwhile, her own income during those years was over $26 million.

Look at Gorelick's wiki page. She's fallen from one cushy job to another, and since 2012, has been a member of Amazon's board of directors.

Now that's grift.

Over the decades, the left has developed a huge infrastructure of grift, most of the time with other people's money, they use to reward their followers and further their policy agenda. Just ask Hunter Biden, whose second career as an artist is really taking off, after serving so faithfully on the board of a Ukrainian energy company.

In contrast, we on the right do not have anything like this grift infrastructure in place to serve, so most of the time, we have to rely on "please give me money" appeals to small donors. Paula Jones, one of Bill Clinton's victims posed nekkid for Penthouse to pay the bills as her erstwhile conservative supporters left her twisting in the wind after Bill Clinton got away with perjury. This never would have happened if she was a Democrat victim. Strings would have been pulled and she'd have gotten appointed to some company's board of directors.

The "old" Rose, Kate Winslet's character in Titanic, was played by Gloria Stuart, who was quite the looker back in the 1930s. And of course Leonardo DiCaprio was in that movie, too. Ms. Stuart lived to be 100, passing in 2010, old and full of years.

GP has an article up about Maricopa County election officials telling everyone to only use sharpies and not ball point pens on election day because they knew that the vast majority of Trump voters show up on election day and sharpies mess up ballots and make them unreadable.

In the ballot instructions it says do not use a sharpies to fill out the ballot. They did this on purpose and left an email trail.

134 I've been a BRCC club member for a while. Canceled my subscription on Saturday I think.

The Rittenhouse response I know was bad but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt being novices at the media spotlight anal exam. They should have just been like "We don't control who buys and wears our merch" and that would have been the end of it. Neither supportive or critical of Rittenhouse's actions just the way every corporation should act.

But giving an interview to the NYT - why, why on earth would you do that. Best has an instragram story out this morning saying "why do so-called conservatives believe a word from the New York Times?" and saying that him and Evan will address the "misinformation" out there. I just don't understand why they willingly walked into a pit of vipers knowing that they're going to be bitten. Hubris definitely strikes me as a cause.

Either way, I can't abide supporting them knowing how what they think of me. The worst part is that they failed to realize the same people who malign and misrepresent their brand are the same ones that malign and misrepresent the Proud Boys and patriots everywhere. Numbskulls!

I read an excerpt of the NYT interview. There was exposed how treacherous former AG Barr's declaration of "no fraud in the election" was. The BRCC head believed Trump's assertions of fraud...until Gasbag Barr came out with that Big Lie. The BRCC guy though started out by saying..."Why wouldn't I believe the CiC when he tells me the election was stolen?"
And yet you believed his subordinate?

180 I think it has to do with the preponderance of leftist allied groups and companies. When we come across something that is putting itself forward as pro-traditionalism, we go 'Hey, I like these guys' and want to support.

Black Rifle had the double whammy of military and traditionalist. Never got too far down the rabbit hole there. Checked out a couple videos and they were not bad, but also did not blow my skirt up too much.

My guess is they ran into a marketing/HR fallacy. Their market saturation on the right had meant that their growth started tapering off. So, what do you do then when you have ever bigger bills to pay? You take the Marvel/Star Wars route and set your current fan base on fire in order to attract people who will never buy your product anyway. No one likes a traitor and there are enough left wing coffee companies anyway.

So, good job Black Rifle!

188 Part of the Tea Party "dilution" was some more "hard core Christian" groups decided they owned the newly energized (and diversified big tent) Tea Party groups.

The tea party formed and rallied around taxes and bailouts ... and included a lot of concerned citizens that did care about ending Abortion (ending it from day one). Many of those "new blood" folks were chased out (or just left) when the Loud Christians demanded Abortion be a priority of the Tea Party groups, (which had just attracted new people outside the "hard core Christian" bubbles).

(and that is a problem with "group power" in general -- old groups want to retain their power, demand subservience)

Sure it is kitch as Hell, God Bless America. And I saw a few Schneider videos online. He definitely defends his brand, unlike most from the past. 210 Additionally: The left demands to know whether the companies they patronize support their causes.

The smart play for a company would be to avoid all political entanglements. Then they run into the Chris Pratt problem: non-commitment is seen as being for the other side and they attempt to destroy preemptively.

All of this flowed from PC. It was the wedge issue used to destroy the First Amendment.

This will only end in blood. Hopefully, somewhere down the line, I hope people learn something.

I plan so much that actually writing is mere drudgery. Filling in the blanks on my outline to make it actually a readable story. The most fun is in the planning where I detail who everyone is, why they're there, and what they do to get to the conclusion. Then it's just details like dialogue after that.

In the new model, if you say anything opposed to them you're evil but if you refuse to vocally support them, you're *also* evil. It skips from banned speech to compelled speech. I've long been in favor of a large conventional military heavily weighted towards the Guard/Reserves, and eliminating SOCOM and the national intel agencies. I think they concentrate too much power in DC and with the bureaucracy.

Honestly, I'd tie a lot of our problems overseas over the past fifty years to the increasing prominence of CIA/SOCOM as the primary means of pushing US foreign policy. Lots of money and training to to sketchy groups without any oversight or debate by the American public. It's foreign involvement on the cheap. At least when you put a brigade or three on the ground somewhere, it tends to spark a debate about goals and US policy.

Yeah, I've always viewed writing as just work. Well, except for my first book which was a meandering mess of looking for reasons why I should hit 500 pages instead of just following the story. It felt invigorating to write because I never knew where I was going, but the final product was pretty much unreadable.

Since then, it's been a need to have a plan. Also, when I outline, I'm figuring out character motivation early so that the move from one plot point to the other tends to feel more organic within the story, like it's the characters making the decisions instead of me. I remember a college professor who said that his characters made all the decisions, and I thought he was a lunatic (liked him a lot otherwise). The characters are choosing nothing. You, the writer, are choosing everything. The key is making it feel like the characters are doing the choosing.

Well, characters choosing the story is your subconscious or right brain doing the steering. It's a kick, since normally communicating with your right brain is hard. I always say my subconscious is smarter than I am.

If I've made my characters 'real' enough, my subconscious will make associations and decisions that are in character, but may not match the plot points I have in mind. Managing that is work. But having goal points to steer towards or breaking out of right brain mode to dictate some actions helps.

To me, the political grift is a separate issue from the business one (thought they are related).

When it comes to the corporate grifters on the Right, like CFA and BRC, I think it's easy for pretty obvious reasons... in America, nearly every major corporation is outspokenly Leftist, and I mean *hard* Left, and they are *in your fuckin' grill* about it, every day. It's extremely tiresome.

So people on the Right are very eager to do business with people who share their values. And at the big-business level, where it's very cumbersome to vet a company, a CFA or BRC can mouth a few truisms we agree with, and we will throw large quantities of cash at them. It's fertile ground for the grift. I mean it's just the lowest-hanging fruit for a con I can practically think of.

Android itself is open source, based around LINUX. There's all kinds of ways to make it more secure, but at the end of the day, you're still open to the apps you use, your carriers (which they now say are accessing your text messages) as well as whoever you're in contact with. If your friends aren't secure, then neither are you. If it's an issue, get a freaking LG flip phone, and only use voice services.

I think they see it as a feature. They initially planned it as a way to hurt Trump sure, but they also found it gave them so very much power. Plus, it allowed them to crush small business and show the weaknesses in 'Capitalism' (forget that the system we have now is fucking fascism- not even close to free market.)

They do not give a shit about the markets, so much the better, to their minds. And the companies will continue to fall in line.

Same here. The only way that I've seen to circumvent the Google/Apple/Microsoft garden is to go completely Linux, and there are less than a handful of makers that are going that route. No apps, long-ish lead times to get your phone, etc. Librem and PinePhone come to mind. Anything else is a grift.

342 >assuming the right is more susceptible to grift than the left, why should that be?

The left already controls every single institution in society. They're carpet bombed with messages that reinforce their state-approved views in every airport, every movie, every popular song, every TV channel, every newspaper--you name it. So they can afford to have an abundance mentality.

The right, meanwhile, has been utterly routed in the institutions of society. People are so desperate for the smallest crumbs of support and reinforcement that they'll latch onto any voice that seems to provide them, like a drowning man clinging to a life preserver. That's how you end up with slimy triangulating weasels like Ben Shapiro, retarded pedophiles like the Lincoln Project, and yeah, the entire GOP.

I guess people will submit to anything if it might stop those scawey meanies on the left from calling them wayciss huh?

And the humiliations will continue until the right grows a fucking brain and a spine and demands--and produces--something better than these worthless losers.

Kyle's life is not ruined. In one sense "the world is his oyster" (potentially).

He is a hero, and he will probably win the battle. And he should come out the other side stronger. We fight wars ... it ruins some lives (those that die or get PTSD?) ... but many emerge stronger, more "patriotic", more "enlightened" about the fight we are in. The soy boy with a trust fund will (likely) never be so "enlightened and alive".

Being attacked is part of the "competition" ... we run the race, finish our course ... one day reap rewards, maybe even some rewards here on earth.

Large numbers of them love to "fall in line and support Mr. X". And Instead of saying, "Hey, why don't we do some research on this guy" they're so pathetically grateful that someone is speaking up for them, they rush from 1st date to marriage in one step.

Even after his death you still had Conservatives talking up McCain. You still have Right-wingers who'll praise Bush and Romney. You still have Trump supporters babbling about "Cocaine Mitch" or saying stuff like "I still like national review".

OTOH, with the Left its one strike and you're out. Forever. No big Tent for them. No 2nd chances. No, well he supports us on this, so I'll forgive him for stabbing us in the back on that. Nope. That's one big reason why they win. And we don't.
