The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Most of us have humorous or irritating anecdotes about the dysfunction of some government department. it's usually the DMV, which in many states is a jobs program for the mentally challenged but terminally lazy among us. Add the complex processes designed to maximize employment and minimize efficiency, and we have a glimpse of Dante's first circle...or maybe the eighth!

But most people don't require the services of their DMV for life-and-death issues. Health care is a completely different animal, and we can all see the degradation of America's medical care with the introduction of government over the last decades. And there is still a healthy (but chaotic) private component in the nation's biggest industry.

But it's not completely broken, so the socialists in DC need the next step in the devolution of the greatest and most innovative health care system into a dystopian socialist nightmare of rationing, endless delays, interminable waits and a sharp decrease in our standard of living.

Progressive Lawmakers Are Working on a Backdoor Plan to Quietly Take Us One Step Closer to Socialist Healthcare

“The package – which Democrats could pass on a party-line vote using their slimmest-possible Senate majority – includes other Democratic goals, such as lowering Medicare's eligibility age from 65 to 55 or 60 and expanding the program to cover dental work, glasses and eye surgeries as well as hearing aids,” Fox Business reports.

This sounds like a small tweak to Medicare, the massive government healthcare program for senior citizens. But lowering the age to 60 is actually a move with drastic ramifications.

For one, Medicare is already one of the biggest drivers of our federal budget crisis. Its major trust funds are projected to reach insolvency within the next 5 years. Further expanding this program that’s already fueling our debt crisis will only accelerate this impending fiscal nightmare.

But even more importantly, it represents a significant step toward the socialist dream of government-run healthcare for all. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, lowering the Medicare eligibility age to 60—let alone 55—could lead to up to 14.1 million people being shifted off of private health insurance and onto the government plan.

One significant complaint about American health care is that we spend too much money on it. But it is an industry just like widget making or farming. Why is that necessarily a bad thing? What is bad is the inefficiencies introduced into the industry by government interference. And increasing the size of the government portion of the industry will accelerate the spiral into the toilet that the power-mad single-payer lunatics desire.

For all of Canada's bragging about their wonderful medical system, a few chats with actual Canadians who have needed that system will quickly disabuse one of the notion that government and healthcare can coexist. And Europe is even worse. Care that would take weeks in America takes months. And that is a diminution of quality of life. Hip replacements and knee replacements are quick in this country, but take many months of navigating the government bureaucracy to acquire in most other 1st World countries with socialized medicine. And sometimes the answer is a flat: No. And just imagine how they deal with life threatening illness. Breast cancer surgery happens here in a matter of a few weeks. In the UK? Not so fast!

And with government control comes perhaps the most insidious change...biomedical research will slow to a crawl. Who would bother with investing sometimes billions of dollars in mostly unsuccessful projects if the payoff for the few successes is a paltry government-decided compensation. And the same market force would apply to the people who decide to become physicians. It used to be the best and brightest, but how many of our best and brightest would want a career as a government functionary?

I'll take American medical care, warts and all, over any other country's system.

15 Healthcare is not completely broken, but the libs are working on it, and I mean the libs inside the hospitals. Before I retired, I had quite a brawl with a social worker. We had a patient from another country who came here to get something for nothing. Her country had a system of sending her home for treatment, I said "yes" to the medical escort (it was no emergency), the social worker said it would be great PR to give the care for free. I won, but not until I dragged in the accountants.

24 Actually, Government funded research will increase under this.

Why? The Board at the FDA who approves medicines and vaccines is run by big pharma now... they will dictate both what medicine is approved, AND the price the Government will pay for said medicine.

It creates a Monopoly, and controlled base of customers.

Posted by: Romeo13 at June 24, 2021 10:08 AM (oHd/0)

25 This dovetails nicely into the massive push by PROGDA to try to con the country into taking a vaccine that's not only not necessary, but has some pretty significant side effects since it hasn't gone through the normal hoops of approval. Pretty sure they want to scare people into accepting gubmint health care.

31 I believe Lasik surgery and plastic surgery are the only healthcare costs that have gone down over time...because they are generally not covered by insurance.

So providers had to compete with each other on prices and treatment.

Posted by: What's a Seawolf? at June 24, 2021 10:10 AM (khAeP)

32 This is something that has always been a question for me. If you take procedures that are not covered by insurance, like breast augmentation/reductions, or lasik surgeries, those prices fall over time. Most other medical procedures seem to either never lower in cost, or increase substantially over time. That tells me that because insurance companies are a layer that sits between the product and the consumer, the consumer doesn't have a chance to exert market forces on companies to drive cost reduction.

What do we lose if customers see what things really cost, and use a system of HSAs to make sure people have a chance to exert true supply and demand pressures to these things? Flat-screen TVs that used to cost $10K are now thinner, larger, and higher quality - and you can get them for $2K.

What gives?

Medicare is *the* problem. We could fix everything else - every other program, every other division - and Medicare (combined with Medicaid block grants) still blows up the budget. It gets dealt with, or the government fails.

So I'm with the Dems on this one. Expand it. It only bankrupts us radically sooner.

Rent-seeking, preferential regulatory and legal treatment and various other bad behaviors. That's what makes it bad.

So much of healthcare is exempt - either formally or informally - from antitrust regulations that it boggles the mind. Call a doctor and a hospital and try to get the price for something. Good damn luck.

No other industry is allowed to refuse price disclosure or preferentially price items depending on who pays. Medical costs - and the budget disaster that they represent - cannot be fixed without price transparency - for everything - at an absolute minimum.

oh yeah, and put the damn prices on a board like at mcdonalds, and online. let people KNOW WHAT IT COSTS BEFORE FUCKING CHARGING THEM!!!!!! I shouldn't find out 3 months latre that the MRI cost 150 more than you thought because insurance only covered part of it.

I believe that a significant percentage of the cost of US healthcare is due to existing government involvement in US healthcare.

I believe that a 2nd contributing factor is permitting companies to rape US consumers because some politician (or close relative) is getting paid for it, ala epipen.

I believe the final contributing factor is allowing other countries to use US developed medicines and devices without paying a reasonable price for them.

Of course, items 2 & 3 are government related as well.

Here's one of my problems with it: the AMA is a cartel, maybe the most powerful cartel in America. So it's very good at doing what cartels do: restricting access to the goods and services offered by its members in order to raise their pay and prestige, and lower competition. This is fiscal kabuki theater; none of the entitlement "trust funds" are solvent, because the entire contents of the funds were spent and replaced by the feds with IOU's to themselves. 99 The biggest problem IMO with American healthcare is not the cost, but the complexity and opacity of billing. Every significant medical event creates a trail of endless mail, phone calls, head scratches about insurance "statements" that say "This is not a bill" --followed by collection notices from a hospital or doctor, more calls to insurance, etc.

At a certain point, Ma and Pa Kettle just throw up their hands and say "I wish someone could just take care of this."

So it may not be good policy, but I think unless the Rs solve the paper mess and create a better mechanism to manage the patient/provider/billing/insurance interface (yes with some government intervention) then I think the public tosses the whole thing in favor of "Single Payer." Notice how the appeal is baked right in there: "Single payer" = "Simple payer."

People can be very irrational when it comes to wanting to offload frustration and uncertainty.

So it's very good at doing what cartels do: restricting access to the goods and services offered by its members in order to raise their pay and prestige, and lower competition. And then we have to listen to them bemoan the cost of health care.An it looks now like doctors are just one more cog in the leftist machine.

Apple CEO Tim Cook himself called Speaker Nancy Pelosi to "deliver a warning" that the "rushed" antitrust bills could disrupt the iPhone, according to The New York Times, and that's not all:
"Executives, lobbyists, and more than a dozen think tanks and advocacy groups paid by tech companies have swarmed Capitol offices, called and emailed lawmakers and their staff members, and written letters arguing there will be dire consequences for the industry and the country if the ideas become law," the NYT wrote.

149 I take one medication, an inhaled steroid called Advair. It's $600 a month. With my work insurance, the policy they pay for would cover half. So I paid for the top tier, which covered it up to $50. So, they managed to find a new generic for it and switched me over to the generic. I had to call my doctor to see if it was okay for me to be on that. It's supposed to be the same, but with this stuff, it would take a month to find out the effects of the new one. Plus I have to have my doctor write up a new prescription for the generic.

Okay. Do it. Destroy Big Tech. Big Tech is a synonym for "bad actor."

There will be consequences to this. Huge unemployment in high-income brackets. Infrastructure disruption where some of the internet stops working for a while. More government interference making privacy and reliability worse.

There is a lot of downside. Some of that downside belongs to me - I would certainly lose my high-tech job if this happens. But the problem is so catastrophically huge and so broadly systemic that it doesn't matter how expensive and disruptive it would be to break these guys into pieces.

The great question with suicide is, does it solve your problems (I'm leaving aside the shattering it does to your loved ones, if any)? Unless one's faith is truly strong, we have no confidence that there is anything beyond this life, let alone a happier place.

Steven King (I know, I know) did a book once about a fellow who tried to get in touch with the dead to see what was on the other side and found that, rather than a heaven or a hell, it was a nightmare eternity of Lovecraftian monsters torturing the departed.

I've honestly thought about suicide a few times in the darkest of my days, but that fear of what might be beyond has always held me back.

My wife's son committed suicide a year ago. It has irretrievably broken the individuals who cared about him. He said in his final words that it was a selfless act and he was only sorry he didn't do it earlier.

He justified it by saying his existence only causes pain for himself and everyone around him. He justified it period. He was a talented and loving person, but troubled.

And all he REALLY wanted was unconditional love and approval from a father who was never going to give it to him. He didn't know that's likely what was driving him to his darkest moods.

And those who loved him are left with a void, guilt and questions they will never have answered. Total fucking waste of tragedy horror worse than anything Stephen King could dream up on his best say.

They can try. And good luck to them. They'll need a miracle because otherwise the outcome of this one is known. The only variable is whether the suit is rejected because of standing or some such, or whether the courts do mental gymnastics to legitimize it.

This kind of corruption was proven clearly and permanently when they raided Trump's counsel and took everything, including shit that is privileged and confidential. Once they did, it was clear that the gloves were off and all bets were closed.

When I was in college, a roommate needed an MRI. It set him back something in the neighborhood of two grand. That got me to thinking.

I managed to get a price out of GE for an MRI machine by impersonating a clinical buyer. I researched salaries and cost of carriage for techs, nurses, receptionists, etc. I researched physical plant costs (a storefront, computers, software, etc.). I determined that I could run an MRI clinic at $500 per image, clear north of $100k a year for myself, and that there would be enough demand in that area to allow me to post a price that low.

I determined in that moment that I would drop out of college and open a medical imaging clinic. Then I found out about New York State's "Certificate of Need" laws and realized I would *never* get the CON - the CON board consisted of my competitors.

There's a lot wrong with American medical care.

206 Several have mentioned it. "Insurance" + guvamint involvement (mandates, cost-shifting, welfare) are the main drivers of the absurd costs.

Real insurance lowers costs, the disastrous thing that's evolved does the opposite. Check the cost curves in areas of medical care without "insurance" - normal.

Guvamint is a large, now dominant of course, malevolent factor in "insurance." Kind of sad. Instinctively, the American people opposed the latest, most disastrous steps (O-care). The political class (and every institution) revolted and crammed it down our throats. It's been just as bad as expected - though since there is nothing resembling a press, few know unless directly affected.

And a key change since 1993 was the flip-flop of insurance companies into enthusiastic cartel members. They helped kill it in '93. Next time around, they conspired with the idiots, and are rolling in the $$$ directed their way. Sickening.

Given the unconstitutional action was intentional, insurance will not pay. Given that they passed the bar and all, they will not be able to hide behind feigning ignorance. The lawsuit can also be heard in federal court and depending on Rudy's residence, even out of NY fed courts. This is a perfect example of a private organization and individuals acting as agents of the state as a gatekeeper and committing an unconstitutional action.

We don't have city bus service between Bayonne and Honolulu. We don't have 24 hour access to a fleet of state provided Porsches anywhere, let alone everywhere. We have buses that run less than 24 hours per day, on fixed routes, over a limited area. Free government healthcare should have the same type of restrictions and a cap for individual payout. I'd even allow a cash out of the medical funds or transfer to a relatives account with the understanding that if you emptied your account, it is pay as you go from then on.

361 There will be rationing of health care because the demand is potentially infinite and the supply relatively fixed. The question is who do you want to control the rationing--private actors or public.

A perfect system is not possible nor is a return to pre Medicare plausible at this point. Right now, the only way that Republicans can plausibly fight leviathan is by setting up alternative systems via statutory exemptions for individual doctors, hospitals, insurance, etc. to bypass government regulations including billing, requirement to treat, and so on. Call it something like Freedom Care, etc. Trump did some of this but only through executive orders which was easily reversible. Needs to be put into law.

363 The obvious problem with .gov provided medical care is that the "patient" is a cost to be reduced or eliminated, not an asset to be preserved, as in private medical care.
The likely result is a two-track medical system, cash paying patients live, the rest wait to die.
