Top Story

  • You won't believe what kids are into these days.

This being The New Yorker, they do their best to blame anime on Donald Trump.

Anime of the day is Akanesasu Shoujo from 2018, a.k.a The Girl in Twilight which is news to me, in which five girls from the high school radio club save the universe using only discarded communications equipment and fish sausages.

No, really.

Also, don't put chikuwas in your air fryer. Reine from Hololive tried it live on stream and posted the results. The term carbonised comes to mind.

Tech News

Anime Catshark Girl Music Video of the Day

Gura from Hololive has good taste in anime. She sang Tsumugi's shark song from Amaama to Inazuma live on stream. A fan reanimated the entire scene to her song, with other Hololive characters dropped into the remaining roles.

Gamers Nexus Cheap Video Card Review of the Day

Steve's back again, this time with Intel's DG1 video card, which you can't buy and couldn't use even if you could. It's an OEM product with very restrictive hardware and firmware requirements.

Also, it's slower than AMD's integrated graphics, and suffers badly from inconsistent performance.

Disclaimer: I mean, so do I, but I'm taking medication and it's getting better.

How is it a scam? Not arguing, just curious.

Also, there seems to a point in the life of most blogs where they devolve from "and hey we can make some money off the site while we write" to "hey we need to make money to pay for our heated pool". Does that breakpoint have a name?

35 Actually, I can understand the progression:

1) You start writing a political thoughts blog because hey- it's the early 2000s, and you are just doing it to have some fun, meet some people and make some observations.

2) You get a following. A couple of your 'pieces' hit and you are getting crosslinked between a bunch of different blogs. Your comment section is rocking.

3) You get some advertising and this is where the critical moment comes. On the one hand, this has just been a hobby for most and the transition to full time job kind of takes away the entire point you were doing this for. You are starting to get burned out a bit on the relentless nature of dealing with a vast number of people every day. Moderate comments or no? If you moderate, it becomes even more a job and less fun and by the seat of your pants.

I think a lot of people at step three just decided to cash in and stick with their day job in order to be able to have some free time to themselves. Some got married and left behind the childish things of the internet. Some decided to make it a full time job, but also decided to band together under various websites.

(sob) Reminds me of one our D&D groups. Two actually, different players from two established groups being merged. My drow sorc was to be married off to a female paladin as an arranged marriage to seal the treaty between both factions (and it was symbolic of the RL merge out of game)

Anyways, honeymoon time, she teases that she has a surprise for me, and it's in the closet, open the door... and out jumps huge spider. I don't think she understood the drow-spider rapport, because she intended it as an assassination and instead I befriended it and named it Bob. She looked disappointed.

So to troll her a bit, I thanked her for attempting to honor my drow culture's honeymoon-murder ritual, and asked "is it poisonous?"

"No?"

"Oh... " I sighed. mimicking her disappointment.

89 Plus many people think that cruise control can be used in crappy weather conditions.
Posted by: Bruce at June 21, 2021 05:39

Happened to my Dad in Mar. Coming down to visit Mom's grave on the anniversary of her death. On cruise control on the interstate and he hit black ice. Rolled and totaled the van but he got away w/ scrapes and bruises, at 84!

Bruce has some good advice there.

90 If you are so terrified by the conditions you cannot go faster than 25 MPH on a federal interstate you should pull off and get a milkshake.

Seriously, I get it *safe* but the presence of crawlers in inclement conditions is just as dangerous as the morons who think "finally I have no traction time to set the land speed records!"

The problem is, everyone thinks they are going the perfect speed and everybody else is asshoe

92 I think it is important to remember when you are driving that it is not just you against the other drivers but you against the other drivers and the weather, and they are working to get you.

Federal highways have a minimum speed for sustained travel of 35MPH to keep rickshaws off them.

If you feel you cannot safely sustain 35MPH why are you on them?

It's all fun and games until you find yourself on a federal watchlist in perpetuity.

I was warned about that by my nephew 20 years ago. I told him, yup, they even tell you that in the owners manual.
Owners manual?

98 I was the guy that got to help my mom get hookd into the internet.

I did it at midnight, over the phone. it was misery.

99 I was coming back from an autocross in the rain one time on race tires that were almost slick. The car was FWD and when you gave it gas at 55 the front tires would start spinning wildly. I pulled off for a while as that was pretty f'n scary.

101 reading the owners manual is an exercise in futility.

106 Speaking of stupid stuff that folks do with vehicle lighting...

Remember back when it was a violation of federal regulations to display a red light on the front of a car?

Or blue lights?

And now we have aftermarket light rings around headlights that can by user controlled to display any damn color that one wishes.

So now you can see a vehicle in the incoming lane, showing red rings, just like tail lights heading at you.

110 flail-ex

Classic Naval term for a collection of people running around in circles, flailing their arms bout, uselessly.

the 'ex' stands for exercise.

111 Read the manual. Those air fryers come with a reheat setting so if you carbonize something you made a choice to do so.

And if you just throw something in and take what's the top choice on the menu for timing then that too is a choice. Unless you've tried it and it's the right time/temp.

I did that myself a couple times but I learned that things get crispy fast in that thing. For some things. For others it's slow.

It's a learning curve. No redos tho. This ain't a video game.

114 LOL

Flail: An action taken by leadership that is a major response to an extremely minor problem. The orders given usually do not address the original problem at
all.

FlailEx: a pointless, flailing Exercise. See "flail".

115 Ooooh, I watched Akanesasu Shoujo from 2018, a.k.a The Girl in Twilight at the time.

It was interesting to say the least! I liked it a lot, but can see why many folks would get lost by it all.
