Remember the ONT

Howdy Horde. I'll be posting this from somewhere in San Antonio, as I'm down here for the weekend. Tomorrow I'll be visiting The Alamo.

Speaking of The Alamo, this week some bint on Twitter was sniffing about how unfair it was that the Texans attacked Santa Anna's army while they were napping, moaning about how unfair it was that we took advantage of their cultural conventions (siesta) and moaning about the Geneva Convention (in 1836??). Bitch, we're Americans, it's kinda our signature move.

Christmas.jpg

In any event, she got roundly roasted, but one guy too the time to actually educate her about the facts of what happened in the Texas Revolution here. Note particularly what happened at Goliad, which was a straight up war crime, despite the incompetence of Col. James Fannin, who apparently went to the General Montcalm school of military tactics.* It's a good read.

*Montcalm was the commander of the French forces in America during the French and Indian War. British General Wolfe had him pinned in his fortifications on the high ground in Quebec, but really had no chance of dislodging him and no time to lay siege before French reinforcement would arrive. Instead of waiting Wolfe out, Montcalm marched out of his fort, onto the Plains of Abraham, where he was roundly defeated, pretty much ceding France's North American possessions to the Brits. At Goliad, Fannin marched his 400 men out of the only actual fort in Texas, was quickly surrounded by Mexicans under the command of  General José de Urrea. After the two day Battle of Coleto, which was fought on the open plains instead of, you know, from the confines of the nice cozy fort, the Texans surrendered, expecting to be treated as prisoners of war. Instead they were murdered on the orders of Santa Anna, over Urrea's protestations. The Texas troops yelled “Remember The Alamo” and “Remember Goliad!” as they fell on the napping Mexicans at San Jucinto, winning their independence. Fun fact: my parents lived on Fannin St. in Amarillo before I was born, named after Col. James Fannin.

Enough with the history lesson. On with the Friday night festivities!

If your enemy fails to observe a rule as basic as "be mindful of your surroundings" or "maintain an adequate guard," you have a right and an obligation to take advantage of that fumble. If you don't, because you think it's unfair, war is really not the right game for you.

38 The American revolution was different in the sense that ordinarily (French revolution might be typical) the mob rises up and deposes the "leadership".

In this instance, the leadership were the ones who revolted. Quite publicly. These were the wealthy, who "pledged they're lives, their fortunes, and sacred honor". And they really did. The signers of the Declaration, somebody did an excellent article on what happened to them. Many did lose their lives and their fortunes as a result.

Notice "John Hancock"? It's axiomatic as shorthand for "I need your signature" when somebody asks for your "John Hancock". But why is the signature on the declaration so large?

Because the King couldn't see very well. Mr. Hancock wanted to make sure ole' George could read his name, even without reading glasses.

By having the Tsar die at the right time.

Freddie was an cad for stealing Silesia from the new Empress of Austria in the previous war and occupying Saxony and funding the war by counterfeiting. He didn't learn and his nice cute army was getting ground to hamburger before the new Tsar gave him an out and ended the war.

The Russians deposed the guy and Catherine the Great took over, but Freddie finally learned and was a good boy after that so she never got the chance to finish the job.

One of the most effective Confederate leaders actually had no military experience whatsoever. Maybe Stuart, not sure. He started out as a Private and worked his way up the ranks. He is (or was) widely studied, and an effective strategist. He just had the knack of that sort of thing.

Sometimes you can be much more effective when you don't have to "unlearn" anything. A conventional warrior who studied past battles is more likely to use "what works." An untrained novice doesn't have that baggage and can innovate in surprising ways.

94 Right, Winston. He was a bad dude.

But that saying, that crude quote attributed to him, is nicely put and easy to remember ain't it?

Doesn't mean I like the guy. This is something that anyone who went to school or university knew back just a few years ago.

Discussion of historical figures doesn't mean we like or approve of everything they did. All the fainting couches and safe spaces are just theater by nutcases to upend the entire system lock, stock, and barrel.

It is lunacy, and I expected the universities to soundly reject that nonsense. The fact that they haven't is not good, as it will completely ruin the schools for generations.

There are stories that NBF tried to stop the killing, and it has always been common for assaults to lead to massacres in war even w/o racial angles. There was a whole series of steps in European sieges where if you did X, blow a hole in a wall, you could summon the troops to give up. If they didn't, you could kill them all in the assault and not violate the laws of war.

So I tend to believe that NBF did try and stop it, because I figure he would admit it if he had deliberately done so. He once told his commander that he would kill him if they ever crossed paths again.

And the same thing happened in the Crater battle with Lee in charge and a more tony set of Generals in place, and just about everywhere else the South faced black troops.

106 I think the opening blog story, the Twitter lesson and its inclusion makes an important point: arguing online is a good thing.

Lots of people like to say "it's pointless to argue online because you will never change the other person's mind." And I agree with the second point in that statement, because it's highly unlikely to change a dumbf*ck that is dumbf*cking about with their wokeness.

But as to the first half of that statement, I disagree. The reason it's important is because other people will read the dumbf*ckery that may have no opinion, but begin to develop an opinion based on the dumbf*ck's claim. It's those individuals that can be enlightened and swayed when reading a challenge to the initial dumbf*ckery in question.

So don't be a afraid to spend time saying "You're a dumbf*ck and I'm going to take the time to explain point by point why you are a dumbf*ck so that you don't spawn more dumbf*cks."

Another large chunk were from other military schools - VMI, Citadel, and the like.

Disagree about promoting Forrest - he had some spotty results in the actions near Chattanooga/Chickamauga, and since he had no infantry skills his route to high command was barred by politics. Schmoozers like Wheeler always got him while not being able to fight nearly as well. Cavalry does need to be able to scout and he didn't do that too well. But the main obstacle with him in the CSA was that he was not one of the club.

Yeah, I researched this battle quite a bit not long ago, and my conclusion was that while Union prisoners (white and black) were killed at Fort Pillow while trying to surrender, Forrest never ordered it, and in fact was trying to put an end to the fighting. It's worth keeping in mind this was 1864, and feelings on both sides were pretty raw by then.

The battle of the Crater was simply stupid tactics. Don't charge into a big hole in teh ground you can't escape. Attack the flanking units who would've been traumatized by the blast.
Instead, the troops in the crater got slaughtered by the rest of the defenders.

There was another angle. For expediency, the generals in the F&I war had made the habit of going to the colonial legislatures, asking for X money and supplies for war, and collecting it from them. Then after the war Parliament said, when trying to pay down the war debt, "No, colonial legislatures, you have no say, here's your stamp tax or whatever". The colonies, and the powerful colonials said bull on that. That's why in most places the US revolution was a bit calmer - the rebel governments were in place and established, rather than ad-hoc creations run by people with no governing experience.

Hi mnw!

I agree, and that was commented on by some observers almost as soon as the 1763 treaty was signed. If the authorities in London hadn't started trying to micromanage the colonists, they still probably wouldn't have broken away, as they did still consider themselves loyal subjects, but to put the administrative screws to them immediately after removing the greatest obstacle to an independent existence was the Brits' greatest mistake.

I don't disagree.

But there is an art to this as well. Having come of age in a pre-internet world, I trained in the arts of IRL trolling.

When I encounter an individual IRL, in say a bar room setting, spouting dumbf*ckery, I liked to let them spout and then systematically dismantling their argument while periodically interjecting sidebars like "and this is why you don't know what the f*ck you are talking about, because you are an ignorant dipshit" loudly enough to where others around the dumbf*ck begin to laugh and mock them.

In this way you can grievously injure their intellect and ego, causing them to either slink away in defeat for all to see, or to enrage them to the point they get aggressive, at which point you can really ratchet up the mockery. When you have reached the appropriate level of aggravation, they will make a decision to try to physically assault you, and if they are good and buzzed, you can slip their initial lunge and beat the living shit out of them while still claiming self-defense.

Yeah, entertainment industry liberals pretend that they give a rat's butt about low income people. I'm old enough to remember when low to moderate income people could afford to take their kids to a movie. They're entitled to get super rich. I just wish they'd dump the massive hypocrisy.

Actually, the that was the plan, and it was the black troops in Fererro's divison, who had been held back from most battles, who were trained to do exactly that.

But the day before someone went to General Meade and said that if the blacks went in and were shot up, it might be though of as racist. So they swapped up at the last minute to a white division. Burnside threw up his hands and had them draw straws. Ferrerro and the leaders of the white troops went into a bunker and got drunk. And the white troops did the milling around.

Finally, after hours, they sent in the black troops, and they struggled past the troops in the Crater and did attack the flanks and forward - but the Rebels had used the time well and they did not get far, and many were not allowed to surrender and were killed in the fight.

The Crater was just a disaster, and it didn't have to be. The black troops who fought there *were* trained to go around the hole, not into it; but they were held back by the high command at the last minute and replaced with unprepared white troops who had no idea what the plan was. When the black troops were finally sent in, it was already too late, and that's when the slaughter began.

Burnside lost his command for that one (which I feel was a bit unfair, as the change was made against his advice).

Funnily, I read that the conversation in which Meade relieved Burnside of command was described as "a perfect example of the English language's talent for profanity." They didn't like each other very much.

Sun Tzu like Machiavelli had eyes not just on the immediate battle, but also on the battle after. Minimizing the number of people willing to risk their lives 3 years later to slit your throat by not burning most but not all of them to the ground right now is a pretty good idea if you aren't ready/able to burn them all to the ground with overwhelming force.

In his time, there wasn't a lot of free cash for soldiers and even a small force was a big burden on a state. And these are not huge states. So force preservation becomes a priority, as disease and other factors waste troops very fast even without battles.

The Princess was first produced in 1959 and was designed by Henry Dreyfuss, the fabled Western Electric desinger. He designed the venerable 500 and many others.

The Princess was targeted at womyns, hence the name. It had a lighted dial, but that required an external transformer. They didn't have a ringer small enough to fit in the case when they first went into production, and so an external ringer was required.

That was soon remedied and later models had the ringer. Touch-tone versions followed.

Then they ruined music so I don't have to buy any new albums! Now let's give a pat on the back to the automotive industry..they don't make any cars I want so I don't have any interest in replacing my 20 year old ones..I am getting richer all the time.

Other stuff supposedly to make war a bit less complete annihilation. I guess so that there won't continue to be either rounds and rounds of revenge or out right genocide.

Seems to me that in all out war complete annihilation of your enemy would be the goal so that no war can continue later with that enemy. And sometimes that's been done.

307 I think anyone building one would be a prime target for preventative strike. Cause anyone with a Neutron bomb could destroy everyone else and own the whole world.

That was also the position for a long while on having anti missile missiles. Makes people nervous as it made MAD obsolete as a strategy.

When one takes a long look, the last 100 years have been kinda fvcked up.
Posted by: jakee308 at June 11, 2021 10:34 PM (gHWbw)

Neutron bombs probably exist. "Enhanced Radiation Warheads".There still will be damage from flash and blast if they are used close enough to the target population to be effective.

It's not like you can touch one off at 100,000 feet altitude, and wipe out all the humans in the country.

310 Warai, Geneva Conventions are substantially taken up by treatment of non-combatants, and POWs. Quite a bit on occupation by armed forces. Always (slightly) amuses me when current day airheads think "occupation!" is some kind of yuuuuge pejorative term and concept. Of course, a lot of this is from the Palestinian 70-year ongoing defeat, that they refuse to work with.

Um, no. Occupation is a large, routine, perfectly acceptable part of land warfare, an unavoidable part. So, lots of rules on obligations and limits of the occupier.

We imposed occupation on Japan after WWII, and some of it was fairly recently technically ended (Okinawa). Ditto West Germany, of course.

Hague Convention dealt much more with warfare itself (weaponry, tactics).

We just had a better organized culture and were better at them at the mechanics of war and were bloody minded as hell.

This always happens the blood gets diluted until the clan can no longer hold on to what it won. And then it gets to be the slave for awhile.

That said however all those rising up are really not doing so out of skill or power as they are being aided by out enemies. but then we've done that one too. Get your enemies enemies to fight with you and tell you all the other party's secrets.

Did it with the Aztecs, Incas and then the Indians. The only tribe that prospered is the Navajo and that's because they lived in some god forsaken barren country and only until lately when oil, gold, coal, uranium and bauxite was found to be worth something have they come out on top, sorta.

You don't have to be understanding, but you could have one conversation, calmly and in an emotionally deadened fashion, and explain to him in no uncertain terms that his sins against your daughter are unforgivable in your eyes, that you will not be his advocate in the matter, that if your daughter asks your opinion it will be to sever ties permanently, and that you would greatly appreciate if he would stop trying to involve you in any reconciliation.

You may further say, "If you aren't going to call and get my advice and assistance when deciding whether or not to sleep with other women, you don't need my advice and assistance in this matter either. You are an adult, you made and will continue to make your own decisions, and you will live with the consequences of your decisions. That's the most loving thing I can tell you."

So I had a thought on that recently. The Old Testament, broadly speaking, is the story of Israel. Adam and Eve are not literally the first two humans but rather the first two Jews. Its the reason war got kinda polite in Europe, for a while. Till the Revolution & Napoleon, more or less.

Big Tech is reaching comical levels of censorship. I was catching up with Tucker's monologues. The other day, speaking of the myocarditis program with the mRAN Coof-vaccines, he had Dr. Hooman Norchashm (how's that for a name). The dude is an immunologist and surgeon who's held positions at various elite medical schools including Harvard. He's al so the author of dozens of papers appearing in various (once) prestigious medical journals.

His position as he elaborated to Tucker: No one who has had Covid and recovered should take these vaccines, and the risk far outweighs the benefit for healthy young people.

That is the only reasonable position anyone could take. Well, the doctor has had his video taken down from Youtube as spreading "vaccine misinformation".

I went to the liquor store around the corner. The cashier was outside, helping a couple of guys working on a car in the parking lot. I came to the door, saw him approaching, and held the door for him. He went in, and I put on my mask before walking in.

He said, "You don't have to wear the mask." I took it off, put it in my pocket, and said, "Cool, thanks! I hate wearing that thing."

I think we may be at a point now where I can walk into a store without the mask, and then just maybe put it on if someone bitches at me about it.

Thousands of the 80K+ Iraqis taken POW during the first Gulf War became asylees and then citizens in the US.

"America: so barbaric in war, enemies fight to surrender to us and then seek citizenship.

America: so racist and unjust, we have to build actual walls to keep people from moving here to live."

Twitter suspended another expert, which Tucker mentioned. She's a fucking expert epidemiologist, MD, Ph.D after her name, author of a long list of papers, etc, etc.

She was discussing the CDC's own myocarditis data and arrived at the same benefit to risk position. Twitter suspended her for spreading misinformation.

So, quoting the government's own data is enough to get you censored by Big Tech.

But they do know the calendar the rabbis around 600BC or so used when they wrote the Bible down a long time later. Pretty much everyone used lunars until they learned different from the Egyptians, which the Romans did not do until Julius Caesar invented the one we use now, with tiny changes.

467 And one of my favorites, from Iraq, Part Dieux: there was a kind of stand-off between the newly formed Iraqi army and a Sunni insurgent group - can't recall, north, probably Salah al-Din. The "enemy" (Sunni group) would only agree to a cease-fire and some kind of stand-down *if the American forces guaranteed it*.

A work of art, really. The evil infidel American occupiers were, quite reasonably, seen as the only legit and trustworthy/reliable power in the picture to guarantee a settlement.

Remember when some asshole judge ruled that Trump couldn't block people on Twitter, because he was an elected official and they just had to be allowed to communicate with him on Twitter, even though the people he'd blocked were just responding to his tweets with dick pics?

If President Trump can't block people because he's an elected official, how is Twitter allowed to ban him and, uh, keep people from communicating with an elected official?

I have an entire 400 or so page book detailing the various attacks and defenses of settlers in the Ohio Valley in the post revolution to early 1820s or so era. Most are about a paragraph. It was common to have flatboats of cargo show up at towns downstream with dead/wounded/scalped crews and passengers.

Not that there aren't some going in the other direction. I remember a notable one were a punitive raid from KY that managed to find pretty much the only Friendly chief and his people. Dude even had a huge US flag given by Washington. Attacked it and wiped it out.

But if we determine that Rabbis were using the lunar calendar when they wrote Genesis down, then we would have to interpret Genesis 21 to say that God was gracious and Sarah bore Abraham a son in his old age. Abraham was 100 lunar (8.3 solar years old) years old when Isaac was born to him.

I think the old parent that had a miracle happen to regarding age was Sarah, not old Abe. Everyone knew an old duffer could have a kid, even one that does not resemble the mailman. Women above 40, not so much.

But point taken, it isn't my theory. Could be that when they were redoing the dates everyone balked making "Old as Methuselah" mean moderately old instead of hugely old.

Legends in those days didn't have to all line up, if your kid asked a question about it you bopped him one.

I'm not sure why Judeo-Christian rationalists can believe there is a deity that exists outside the realm of creation, that has the power to create matter and the universe from nothingness, but he can't put a person inside a fish or make a person live 900 years.

The God of Israel can and will do as He pleases. Our understanding of His why, how and when will never compete.

A similar thing happened in the late Rome period where the airy musings of Greeks on the Trinity collided with the more bare knuckle enforcers of the other groups, so Group A would call heretics of Group be on the most obscure shades of variation on the subject. This did a lot of harm to the church and the state, over differences that could hardly be defined much less compromised over.

The polar-opposite of a Mechanical Engineer is a Social Engineer. One works from facts and data to produce calculations from which architects can design things that work within limits, and don't generally fail right from the get-go.

A Social Engineer works from suppositions, projects rationalizations, and helps politicians and bureaucrats produce edicts, rules and regulations which mathematically and historically, are certain to fail right from the get-go.

Guess which has their hands on the National Throttle, 'bout now?

The hills down there are full of old settler graveyards and Indian burial grounds. My sister and brother in law live in Adams County, and he knows of a bunch of old Indian burial grounds that people just don't touch.
Allegedly, Killen Station, a coal burning power plant built in the early 1980's, was on a burial ground, and there were several fatalities in building it. And the last year saw it demolished, and two guys were killed during the demolition; a boiler fell on them as they were cutting it apart. The boiler weighed something like 40 tons.

I bought a stinking ass cheap harbor freight rotating/swivel head 1/4 drive ratchet for $12 because it was a decent copy of my snap-on version, and I was curious how it would hold up. 514 A lot of stories from the Bible were related by people who didn't have a written language, let alone an accurate calendar.

They passed these stories down orally until they had a written language to work with.

You remember the old game Telephone? You'd whisper something to someone, who'd then whisper it to someone else, and eventually the story would make its way back to you, but a lot of the details would be different? That's how I view those stories about Adam and Methuselah and Abraham and Sara living for 900 years (and Sara having a baby when she was almost 900 years old).

Time is sort of relative in the Old Testament. Genesis says God took six days to create the world and put humans on it, but, well, what is six days to someone like God? Six days for Him could easily be eons for us.

A lot of the shop guys buy their tools on installment plans from Snap-on, and then because they can (and because the money is good and a lot of them don't have good money skilz) they trade up as often as they think they need to. 520 One interesting characteristic, usually human technology starts out relatively primitive, and gets better over time. But there are several sites around the world where the stone work starts out an exceptionally high level of precision, made out of extremely hard materials like granite, diorite, andesite, basalt. Just "there", and obviosly at a high level or mature technology for whoever built them. The Pyramids are a good example. The stonework got worse over time, not better.

Macchu Pichu is like that, the Incas built on top of the original stuff very primitively comparatively.

Bidding up the price, paying big cash premiums to outbid the competition. This is one of the reasons for the crazy housing markets and ridiculous prices.

There is something very ominous here. The Oligarchy literally wants us to be serfs. We will own nothing. They will own everything and we'll be their debt slaves. That is what they want.

BC, as an Ohioan you might like this story. In 1798 Wm Lucas sent his 2 sons to investigate the land he was given for service in the Rev War. The land was in now Scioto Co. OH.

So in 1800 the father decides this is a good move, they are moving from around Shepherdstown, VA (now WV) to OH. He votes for Jefferson and leaves on the trip. Along the way he stays at a tavern and finds out Jefferson won and he and the innkeeper get drunk together to celebrate.

Great family story, except the disgrace Wm voted for a Dem. But it was TJ, those were different days and John Adams, bless his heart, was just an unlikeable douche.

I am a firm believer. Well not believer, but wouldn't be surprised in the least, and would probably bet money on it being so, that there was another high human civilization on this planet well before we think.

Was the civilization at high tech level? Don't know, but probably wouldn't bet on it. Maybe say, Roman level or something.

It exists and was wiped out in some planet-wide cataclysm, maybe SMOD, maybe something else. Look at the coastlines at the minimium during the last ice age. There's a hell out of lot of land that is now underwater.

And where do humans love to build? Right next to the water.

I believe this ancient civilization was the basis for the Atlantis myth, and for the Great Flood myths that permeate every culture on the planet. Yep, every one has some Noah's Ark like tale. This is dim memories of an ancient cataclysm that rest the world.

This civilization was likely global. That is, sea faring, knew the earth was round and travelled the globe.

532 Was the civilization at high tech level? Don't know, but probably wouldn't bet on it.

I think you've already lost the bet. The granite boxes in Egypt alone are a real enigma. They are precision made, with 90 degree angle cuts, huge boxes made of a single block of stone, from quarries hundreds of miles away. The surfaces are flat within a few thousandths of an inch. This is significant, because nobody makes things more complicated or to a higher level of precision than is necessary.

Baalbek is another strange one. The Romans built on top of it, but there's no record of them building with stones of that size like found in what's called the "Trilothon", they are massive. Why? Why would they do that?

An archaeologist named Petrie discovered some granite cores associated with precision cut holes in granite. Remember granite is tough to drill, or cut. Based upon the striations found on the cores, he estimated a 1 in 60 feed rate on the core drill, roughly 1/10th of an inch per revolution of the drill. This is very impressive for drilling into granite.

Posted by: Common Tater at June 12, 2021 01:12 AM (XVgpK)

533
And then there's the Hall of Records theories. This is likely Woo, of course, but it's part of the Atlantis lore. It goes as follows:

When the Atlanteans realized they were all gonna die and their civilization and works were going to be destroyed (and it might have been a few "prophets" who warned them, but were ignored), they made an effort to try to preserve their history and knowledge.

They sent out teams to special places on the planet to create Halls of Records to hold this knowledge and in places they hoped would survive.

One of the big legends is one of the Halls of Records is buried deep under the Sphinx. I forget where the others are supposed to be, if there's any candidates.

I always thought the Methuselah thing was a shift from a lunar calendar to a solar one. Methuselah lived to be 969, which, if you are counting lunar cycles is bit shy of 72 years. 72 seems a ripe old age for a tribal elder of copper age nomadic herding people.

536 The Sphinx and that area is riddled with huge deep tunnels and shafts all over the giza plateau. I've no idea what all that stuff was for. Building this huge supposed tomb (and then leaving it empty) doesn't make much sense. The outer casing stones were looted for other construction. Supposedly the entrance was invisible, that's how tightly fitting the casing material was. That's why the Arabs blasted a hole about 40 yards away from the original entrance, and tunneled around till they found the shaft.

The Great Pyramid was the tallest structure made for thousands of years, it wasn't until the Eiffel Tower in 1889 or whenver that it was exceeded. Kinda wacky in a way.

Looking this up, and this comes from much woo-woo sources, there were three Halls of Records built. One is at Giza, under the Sphinx.

The second one is somewhere under the Atlantic around Bimini (see the Bimini Road stuff).

541 God can tell truths even through stories that are not historically accurate. There is not doubt man has played a part. Look at some scribe 500 years ago translating a Bible by hand, by candlelight. Look at the reality that The Bible was written in different languages, and usually the language those being described did not speak.

I recall religion courses where certain people were put off by the teaching, it didn't matter a that a reverend was teaching the course, and he has teaching what historians know about the Bible.

In the end, you have faith or not. If you believe the Bible is word for word inerrant, then I ask, which version are you talking about? At the same time. man has always been a factor, our fallibility exists and that can not be taken out of the picture. But to deny the Bible is the Word of God to man, is to simply not believe, to have no faith in that scripture. There are lots of examples out there but at least for me it is way too late to get into it.

think whether you believe the Bible is inerrant or "the general word of

question, at least few religious Christians believe that is the
question.

544 The earliest accounts of inside the great pyramid describe what we would call a robot today and other strange materials, and burning lamps or lights. Straight out of Indiana Jones.. Lots of obvious circular blade saw marks on the basalt floor on the area surrounding it. Not a major deal maybe, but the archaeologists today don't recognize Egyptians having any metal or circular saws, or lathes, or anything like that. If you've ever used a powered saw and made a mistake, and then cut at a different angle, you'd recognize the same thing. It's clearly evident they had high speed circular blades.

Not because of transliteraitve accuracy.

But because it's the Word of God that our Founders read, understood, and related into our Declaration and Constitution.

Linguistic Scholars can take a seat behind me on this. The KJVs every word and meaning can be tracked down to it's origin and root in every language. References such as Strong's, and Vine's Concordance of New Testament Words, pave the way.

I am KJV version all the time, every time. I like the versions that translate some words to make it easier. I also like the idea that some can't get it, can't relate to it, so they should read other versions. One I prefer is the Revised Standard Version. Not the NRSV, but the RSV. It is a a decent translation that absolutely no one pushes today. That is probably a good reason to check it out.

but yeah, to me, there is nothing like the KJV. Find any text, and the KJV is better. Also, it is part of our literary and cultural history. It is pretty clear that today it is not well known, and that is a very bad thing.

i recall people asking a Biblical scholar which version they should read. He said, the version you have at hand. In the end, it is very easy to get into the weeds here. But the point, imo, is faith. You either have faith, can be persuaded to faith, or not. Sure there are other levels, you can get into deep analysis is that is your want.

The thing about the KJV is is no only inspired the people who made modern Western Civilization, who also converted people in numbers unprecedented, but also it is the single most literary book man has ever devised. Even taking about religion, no other book has influenced English and American literature than the King James Bible. To have not read it is to have missed out.

Addiction is a physical disorder that conditions the brain. One does not stop being an alcoholic because one finds the will to quit drinking; one remains an alcoholic. Same with drug addiction; you can choose to not do drugs, which is an act of the will, but your body will still crave it.

Addiction is not the place where self control comes into play; that's character.

Apparently you think Western Civilization was invented by Protestants. You need to read a bit deeper into history, well beyond Martin Luther, to the rise of the Scholastics who invented modern science, and to the rise of the University, the Trivium and the Quadrivium. Protestants surely built on what existing, no doubt, but they did not invent the modern world.

I did not miss out on reading the KJV, I just found it rather light on several points, not least of all it leaves out more than one of the books, but the language tends to obfusticate rather than elucidate. YMMV.

577 TCN, God love you, but as a fellow Christian of the Protestant persuasion (Baptist), I beg to differ, but we'll find out who was closer to the mark when we're all gathered together in Christ.

Myself, I prefer the NKJV.

Oh darlin', everyone is given faith, in the amount and type they need to prosper in the Lord. I would never presume to say anyone's faith is in vain, and I'm surely not going to be in charge of the pearly gates. That's not the topic here, at all. Not to worry.

Well, apparently your experience with alcoholism bears little relationship with mine. In my experience, most who are actual addicts never do work their way back to anything like normal. The difference between a drunk and a dry drunk is that first drink, and the many that come along with it. Nearly nothing else is different, except the will to either drink or not drink. The defect is deeper than a decision.

But your way sounds sunnier, even if I've never seen it.

Posted by: tcn in AK, Hail to the Thief at June 12, 2021 02:45 AM (SDdx5)

580 Apparently you think Western Civilization was
invented by Protestants. You need to read a bit deeper into history,
well beyond Martin Luther, to the rise of the Scholastics who invented
modern science, and to the rise of the University, the Trivium and the
Quadrivium. Protestants surely built on what existing, no doubt, but
they did not invent the modern world.

I did not miss out on reading the KJV, I just found it rather light
on several points, not least of all it leaves out more than one of the
books, but the language tends to obfusticate rather than elucidate.
YMMV.

Posted by: tcn in AK, Hail to the Thief at June 12, 2021 02:33 AM (SDdx5)
I responded to you before reading this. Sure I knew it was coming, there was no doubt about that. But trust me, I have read about the Renaissance and Reformation. I have read of Pogio Bracciolini, Petrarch, and so many others, I know of st. Francis of Assisi, so let's not make this a religious war. I fully admit the Catholic Church played quite possibly the greatest act in ushering in Western Civ. So let's call the dogs off, you have me all wrong.

Cheers to this.
i enjoy drinking and it's effects. there are few other joys left to me these days, so i make the most of it, but, the day i HAVE to have a drink to get by is the last day i'll have one. and it helps to not get hangovers. practice makes perfect!

583 but denying that that KJV and the Protestant Reformation did not light a fire under the lights of Western Civ, is wrong too. We can acknowledge both. And anyone who wants to take a shot at me because of a word not said exactly correctly, doesn't know Quint so well.

I respect what Catholics did over many hundreds of years. Anyone who doesn't, doesn't know their Christian history.

dry drunk is a code word.

both sides of my parents family have documented alcoholics back to at least 1850, most have struggled through but some have died of it

alcoholics is a symptom of a bigger issue, serious

there was an episode of Mash where they dealt with this issue. Hawkeye said he would quit if he ever felt the need to have one. It is not that easy, I think we all know that. Alcoholism is an addiction. I see why some argue whether it is a disease. But I know for many they would love it eradicated, disease or not.

some people don't get along for whatever reason. I never criticized you in any way. I agreed Catholicism played a huge role in Western Civ. You went off on King James, and I agreed he was not much I am still open for a discussion. but leave the shoulder chips at the table.

it is, IF you are strong enough. not everyone is, hence the problem in the general population. i just refuse to be roped in to the pool where i don't belong.

there are lots of things i LOVE to do that i do not, because of the negative effects on my life. hell, i found a gallon ziploc baggie half full of crack cocaine hidden in some bushes, which i called the LAPD to come pick up. there was just enough there to either kill me, get me killed, or destroy my life. i chose wisely. may others do so as well.

593 I know dick about computers. For sure I never learned to code. I mean, i have used them since the early 90s and knew guys who used the net in the early 80s. That was weird looking back, I knew guys that communicated on the net in the very early 80s. They were the 1 percent for sure.

Anyway, I think I am running windows 8 hear. I recall MSFT said the world would end if you did not upgrade. I now believe a lot of that is just trying to get people to upgrade. I still have the old software and I have not run into anything that stands out. Funny, as I recall, it was the most hated version of Windows. I am not saying I like it, but I just never got around to upgrading.

594 George washington, thomas jefferson and john adams were limousine liberals of their time. Sam adams and thomas paine were antifa. Conservatives were loyalists supporting king george. The best man of action in american history was john brown. Northerners said when? John brown said if not me who? If not now when?

Posted by: raimondo at June 12, 2021 04:15 AM (bGZG4)

595 how did that work for John Brown?
you are right about Adams and Paine. They were agitators who mattered at a certain time but after that, not so much. Paine went off the rails and Adams disappeared once the bullets started flying.

Posted by: Quint at June 12, 2021 04:20 AM (gJfTA)

596 @595 It worked great for john brown. He got lincoln elected and provoked the civil war. Ended slavery. Many more have died for far less achievements. John brown's body lies a mouldering in the grave glory glory hallelujah! Union solders sang as they went to battle. The martyrs power begins with his death and the tyrants power ends with his.

Posted by: raimondo at June 12, 2021 04:46 AM (bGZG4)

597 no doubt there. John Brown's Body was one of the songs they sang. Dixie was another one used by both sides. Hell, a Northerner wrote Dixie.

i personally have no issue with slaves wanting to break free. Brown's mission was misguided at best, the results speak for themselves. There was something tearing at the body politic. There was something that did not fit. i personally don't think it is right to go terrorist, but I was not there. Not doubt it moved things to the point where something had to happen.

most Union soldiers did not care about slavery, at least in the way we would care about it. They could not stand the South and the leaders of the South, they called them oligarchs. There is a reason Mississippi had more wealth than any other state before the war.

Posted by: Quint at June 12, 2021 05:01 AM (gJfTA)

601 Most Union soldiers fought for the Union, an idea few Americans can
understand today. Most CSA soldiers fought for their family, friends and
states. Again, something few could understand today. in the end, most
Union soldiers got on with ending slavery. They wanted to end it because
it punished The South, made Civil War not possible, and because they
though the idea was anathema to the world they lived in.
But
anyone who says most Union soldiers signed up in 1861 to end slavery on
the continent, is misguided. Nothing wrong with starting with that idea
but to learn the real truth is much more enlightening.
