Saturday Morning Coffee Break

b6dfde935a4ff9c9.jpg

(H/T Hrothgar)

Good morning Morons.

***

Why Cobs and sailors love a filthy unwashed coffee mug.

Sailors call their unwashed coffee mugs "seasoned." (Photo via NavyHistory.org)
Athletes on a hot streak or headed to the playoffs in a given sport oftentimes opt out of shaving for fear of interrupting a routine that may throw a wrench into success. Such superstitions, however, are not limited to the participants of any particular sport.

Sailors, for example, but more specifically those those who have achieved the rank of chief, have one superstition that extends into the unsanitary. They never clean their coffee mugs.

The first time I learned of this I was 23 and working in an office in Washington. The director, a Navy veteran whose cubicle I shared, had a note stuck to his mug that read, “Don’t wash me.”

When I inquired, he informed me that it was something he picked up as a sailor. He’d done this with his black coffee for so long, in fact, that he’d simply grown to enjoy the taste of the weeks, months, or years old residue.

“It adds a lot of flavor,” he said.

Rules? Opine, bloviate and be kind to one another. Oh and have a great weekend.

11 Willowed

Before I got the new bike, the neighbors always knew when the scooter was warming up and I always had to keep the RPM low until I got out of the neighborhood.

*

Sure, but that doesn't really translate to a driver in a modern car with sound dampening designed specifically to reduce noise levels in the name of luxury.

Again, I have no problem with them. I'm part of it, with motorcycles and multiple muscle cars. With that perspective comes the acceptance that cool sounding exhaust is more about attracting like minded people to your vehicles than any hope of making a person who is passing on a double yellow because they don't see you suddenly hear you coming.

35 I rinse, but rarely wash mugs. Rinse, dry them in the dish drainer, ready for use the next morning. But if someone washes my mugs, I'm not going to suffer psychic trauma or anything. Life's too short, and it's shorter when you're jumping up someone's dickhole because they washed your mug. I firmly believe that's one of the reasons why some of my chiefs (chieves?), who were 32 or so, had all the youthful vigor of the Cryptkeeper after drinking from a false Grail.

She mentioned any number of times she couldn't believe how hard everyone in the east works. 65 Mine's an Ember, a high-tech cup with something in its base that takes a charge via its pad, which is plugged in.

Hot coffee put into it activates something, and somehow the cup does a thermodynamic heat-transfer thing whereby it takes the heat from the too-hot-to-drink-yet coffee and retains that to then keep the coffee at perfect drinking temperature for a very long time.

You have a phone app to set the desired temp.

And I haven't washed it ever. Four years. Just wipe with soapy dishrag once in while, otherwise just a wipe with a damp one.

No part-cup going cold on you. How till the last drop.

It was a Christmas gift from my daughter.

94 For those who love iced coffee, but don't wanna pay ridiculous prices for premade stuff or take hours making it themselves...

If you have a Keurig and normally use the largest cup setting, for iced coffee, use your same kcup at the smallest cup setting. Add your white liquid and sweetner while it's hot, and then add your filtered water ice cubes (yes, if I used filtered Brita water in Keurig, I'm not ruining my coffee with tap water ice cubes).

It's wonderful and done in 2 minutes - I'm partial to Caribou's Caribou Blend kcups, but any work...

I still have a cheap little plastic press that Frangelico gave away in a Christmas gift set a few years ago. Been wondering if I could open a K pod of Peet's into it and make it that way. It's only big enough for one cup.

137 Quint, the seasoning in the pan makes it mostly no stick - my steel bread pans get that way too.

Cast iron is really forgiving, when it gets crusty you can scrub it, you can wash it, but if the seasoning is just right you can just wipe it out. If you want to make a hobby out of maintaining a season in the pan, you will get a wonderful seasoning. If you don't the pan will still cook

If you stew tomatoes in it you can maybe strip the seasoning off too, and if you leave a pan full of water it can rust a bit. Just scrub it out and cook bacon in it.

But also there are many that would never do such a thing as it would be terrible. I honestly don't know the answer full stop . you would think after al these years i would have one, I guess i can say you are likely not going to ruin a legit seasoning by cleaning a pan of crud. Also, many say you can cook tomatoes in a well seasoned pan. In the end, don't go by me, do your own research and experiments.

One of the core tenets of Hipster-ism is that you keep coming up with newer, sillier shit that is "cool", so that you can say you're up with the trends and everyone else is lame. It's a thing that's always been with humanity (speech, fashion, architecture, etc.), but Hipsters really ramped it up to 11.5 with the ridiculous lengths they were willing to go to to be ahead of everyone else.

That same, *exact* same, mechanism is at play with the sexual perversion crowd. They keep making up new words, new categories, new flags... just to see who's keeping up and who's just a Filthy Casual.

it is decent stuff, from Columbia as I recall. I remember some gringo who tried to make a brand making aguardiente with hot spices. To be honest it was ok at best and I was trying to be nice to the guy. Turns out he was one of those guys. He would bs you about where it was made etc. in the end, it was just like a thousand other products in the late 2000s, some guy with an idea, and sourcing the booze from someone else.

But spicy aguardiente is way worse than the regular stuff.

195 One thing that's always bugged me... OK, fine, you can't be arrested for burning a flag, because it's free speech, and it's not a crime to speak against the government, blah blah, fine, whatever.

But it's still arson! It's still taking someone else's property and destroying it! Even if it's your own flag you bought and paid for, it's still lighting a fire in the middle of the road which is highly illegal for multiple reasons!

So we're allowed a free pass on all Crime as-such just as long as we're slagging off Uncle Sam in the process? Is that the operative case law here?

I live in a pretty dry climate and even if it is 75-80 degrees outside Inkeep the windows open and it is pleasant inside. 255 205 A lot of people in VA and TX drink unsweet Iced Tea. I am not saying those are the only places in the South were it is common but in my experience, yes. I don't get why someone would want to drink an equivalent of a coke, but not drink a coke. Sure I like sweet from time to time, but never with tea. At most, I can go for an Arnold Palmer. But even that drink is specifically made with lemonade and Unsweet tea.
Posted by: Quint at June 12, 2021 09:30 AM (gJfTA)

A lot of people in VA and TX grew up in the North...my kids made amazing money at a VA craft sale selling "Northern sweet" cold brew iced tea for $2/cup...It was just my green/white tea bags cold brewed overnight with a homemade simple syrup, but made at about 1/3 the sweetness of southern sweet tea (which is how I like my sweet tea - I like a "little" sweetener with my iced tea, not a little iced tea with my sweetener). When I'm in the mood to order in restaurants (which is very rare), I just ask for 1/2 sweet and 1/2 unsweet, and it's usually close enough...

310 The Navy Unwashed coffee mug really is a superstition, and one I can attest to.

My cup on my Destroyer went unwashed all through the run up to Desert Storm... got a new 'Kid' in my division transferred in while we were out... who was tasked with cleaning my office... he, not knowing, washed my cup.

My subordinates jokingly told me, while at my 6 PM turnover meeting, acting like it was a HUGE deal, as a joke on the newbie. Laughs all around...

The next day, during an Underway Replenishment, our ship lost all electric power, and ran into the USS Kansas City, trashing our Sonar Dome, which meant we could not go over 20 Knots for the duration of Storm.

This is how people end of doing Superstitions, even though they don't REALLY believe.... out of a 'but, what if'...

They were p--------------d!!The sailor didn't get in any trouble over it, he had no idea about the tradition. But they did reassign him to the general mess.

318 My father would not even drink coffee from a cup that wasn't white on the inside and I have inherited that trait. Probably racism. Anyway, clean coffee maker and cups is a must. Sailors have been at sea too long. LOL

319 148 We had a coffee pot at a USCG SAR station I was at, that received the dregs of all other pots. This skanky, stanky, nasty, burnt pot cooked 24/7 as we added to it all day and night. God help the poor mess cook who mistakenly washed it! The engineering CWO, who drank from it would tear him a new one.

320 LOL! So true.
We were on WestPac and washed the Chief's mug for him.
Fireworks ensued.
