Daily Tech News 8 June 2021

Top Story

Anime of the day is Irozuku Sekai no Ashita Kara, a.k.a Iroduku, from 2018. There's no manga or novel behind this; it's an anime original, and there was no buzz about it at the time, so I stumbled across it during a lull at work when I actually had time to watch anime. (That situation has since been corrected.)

I tend to give these shows my own names, because it's shorter, like Re: Slime, or as with Autistic Psychic Alien Yakuza Battle Robot because if someone just mentions Hinamatsuri I can't remember if that's the one with the girls practicing traditional Japanese festival dances (it's not).

Anyway, this is Colourblind Timetravelling Granddaughter Witchfriends. There's rather a lot going on in the plot. I really do recommend this one; it came as a surprise even to me, and I watch far too much anime.

I Can't Belive It's Not Haruhi Anime Music Video of the Day

Sharada is the definitive AMV for season one of Haruhi, but this is the definitive AMV for season two. It reduces the Endless Eight arc to five and a half minutes, which is probably worth a Nobel Prize. In physics, or maybe medicine.

For those who haven't seen it, the story spends eight episodes trapped in a time loop, with scenes repeating over and over, but with not a single frame of animation reused. It's a lot of fun if you start out with a high SAN score, but watch out if you used that as your dump stat.

Got Milk? Don't Got a Kitchen Knife? Let's Fix That Video of the Day

Yes, there's an entire channel where the guy makes knives out of things it shouldn't be possible to make knives out of. Milk is not even the most surprising.

Disclaimer: Or even the tastiest.

2 I disagree with "Rule #1 of Encryption: Never roll your own encryption"

A customized AES-256 encryption developed by oneself (source properly secured) is the way to go.

The key is to force your users to not get complacent and use complex passwords at all times.

3 As for "Darkside", it's all Deep State BS. Creepy Joe's CIA and FBI was in on the "hacking".

Their objective: to undermine key industries in order to justify government takeover.

8 The description for Irozuku says "her grandmother sent her back to 2018 where the a world of vivid colors springs forth" so apparently Hitomi's grandmother was 1000% MAGA.

I've never been crazy about "witch" shows, but I watched Flying Witch, and while there wasn't some deep plot that made you want to binge watch the series in one night, it was such a pleasant show that really personified the Iyashikei genre, as it'll put you in a good mood.

My current mood is mixed due to Mr. Tonegawa being a disappointment so far, and inbetween I'm rewatching FLCL Alternative, which isn't nearly as good as the original but gets the tone and underlying plot right, where as FLCL Progressive was awful shit and everyone connected to it should be blacklisted from the industry.

but I stopped paying for an antivirus a few years ago. I used to pay up and for some reason I thought it mattered. I use an old version of MSFT, and use their free antivirus. I haven't noticed a difference at all. Looking back, I think I got taken. Now I know some use the net for different reasons, or put their computers at greater risk somehow. But I did look into this and and decided I am not paying anymore, crap, I am not even using the free stuff. Why run one more thing with no proven value, at least no value I could quantify.

You made the right call. Originally you did need an antivirus, but the stuff that comes with Windows has been good enough for years, and some of the third-party packages have been less than great.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at June 08, 2021 04:05 AM (MqQvv)

30 my personal view on the net, net security etc is this. The less you rely on it, the better. There will always be new technologies, new threats, and new ways to counter the threats. A conspiracy theorist might say the net security firms need the hackers, they work in a symbiotic relationship. I also know even if you never touch a computer or smart phone, your info has likely been hacked or pwned at some point.

I know the net is the way it is, it will only grow, nothing will change that. But anytime someone says they came up with something new that makes things extra safe, man, i have to laugh. "Unexpected" events are so common that they need to come up with a new word for them.

that is good to hear. I did do some research before coming to that decision. I used to have them all for years. I finally decided it was simply not something I needed considering the few ways I use the net. And I have not had a virus in a very long time. I remember back in the old days you would get them, but not so much now.

33 I read the SEO "scam" article.

First of all, the dude who wrote it is pissed his gane engine manipulation is not giving him the first place on Google. Pathetic lowlife.

Second, there is no scam. The HTML tool thst generates is free, and has a dusclaimer about placing links in HTML pages. The writer is labelling it a scam to scare the users of those HTML tools. It's a trick, yes, not a scam.

Third, lazy paid developers who use free online tools for their "work" and end up publishing auto-generated pages on their boss' web server should be fired.

I use premium Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro. Both have saved me dozens of times from Trojan horses to ransomware in real time to blocking attempts at keyloggers.
It's saved me untold thousands for maybe 150 bucks for both over 3 years.
I remember one time I was discussing a business deal with a good friend and somebody he trusted. The next day, a ransomware attack in real time was caught. I've had 2 ransomware attacks blocked the day after I had a depositions.
Hell, even if you aren't involved in finance or legal work, it's worth it to keep your personal info, pictures, and work safe and secure.

37 On Windows, you absolutely need an antivirus. So many rogue websites are embedding executable files which a browser will download and possibly execute if the user is not paying attention. This is particularly true if you often go to warez sites. *cough*

Personally I use Avast, which I firewalled off the Internet. I only let it connect to the web when I need to update the virus definition. It's a pretty good antivirus but I had to do some heavy configuration to stop some of its bloated components like "Overseer".

Avast has intercepted so much questionable crap, I doubt Windows Defenser would catch it.

that is interesting and good info. Like I said, I know people use it in more ways than I do. Crap, there was a time when I looked into security software from my Kindle and smart phone. In the past I have had Norton, AVG, The Russian one, really all of them. But for years now it has only been Windows Defender.

No way i am saying I know the threats. But that is the decision I made a few years back after considering everything. Money was not the issue, certainly not more than the reality that is always an issue at some level.

There are people trying to steal, some get paid to cause chaos, others cause chaos just for the fun. It's not cool when the wife thinks she is going schizophrenic and the kids believe the house is haunted and are too terrified to sleep.

51 I forget which Antivirus i now have on my Mac, I think i actually gave 2 running, i use to not run anything but I think there have been some rough Mac viruses lately so i thought I'd be safe.

What i need to see is how I can DL files and execute them in quarantine (so that i can scan them before they infect my computer) since i need to DL all new programs for Big Sur and I assume everything on bittorrent is now infected with something. I was thinking about getting new RAM to fix my old computer's issue, and using that as a test machine where I'll run any file before running it on the new computer.

Unless there's summe safe place to actually get Adobe Suite and Final Draft (you use to be able to download the demo directly from them and then get a keygen, but that doesn't seem to work anymore, plus even the key gens addres infected)

Injecting links is nothing new. In case you haven't noticed pretty much every mobile app has one or more. I hear there is a whole industry called "web advertising" that relies on injected links. What's the big deal?

I would say the year was 2000. Dec 12 2000, to be exact. The day Democrats took an oath to never let a Republican win a fair election again.

Everything that has happened in politics since then has its roots on the fact SCOTUS didn't allow a Democrat to steal a presidential election on that day. If that meant rigging elections, news reports, or Internet searches, so be it.

my personal view is it is all based on peer pressure and the culture of your individual city/area. We have all seen the videos in New Jersey and some other places where they literally attack strangers, and hound them out of the store.

But in Virginia, deep blue Virginia, even the awful governor admits the state has not prosecuted a single person for not wearing a mask since this thing started. For sure it depends on where you live, but my guess is they get away with it because people go along with it. In the end, most places are not going to fight with their customers signs on the door or not. Sure there are some that are itching for a fight or at least itching for 100 percent compliance.

66 Morning, everyone. Thanks to Pixy, Im having awful yet amusing flashbacks to eternal nightmare that was the Endless Eight Arc... I'll never forget that summer when I was trapped watched that endless loop but I endured knowing Ms. Nagato suffered for over 5,000 repeats of that cycle. In spite of that unfortunate detour, I still highly recommend the series but perhaps u should skip that ugly losing streak in the second season.

And Skip, I'll never get tired revisiting the adventures of Kei and Yuri specifically because their natural chemistry, unique plots and interchangeable background allows me to focus on the Lovely Angels free of any distraction or attachment to my day. Just enjoying a break from the contrived chaos of life and visiting the creative madness of the Dirty Pair always balances my spirit.

72 It is therefor possible that the FBI is in fact the recipient of the ransom and that it was the FBI that hacked Colonial Pipeline.

Since, you know, they possess the private key.

People who watch MSM "reports" won't even bother to care to know what a private key is.

So the FBI can come up with this "randomware" BS and blame Russia as usual. It has worked every time in the past. Why stop now?

They could have tatooed the info on their foreheads in plain English and not been charged.

Thank you for the recommendation. I am trying the free trial on my Mac.

75 I'm going to cut out early. Giving blood early this morning. I just have to trust that no vampire would live after an IV from me.

May you all have a serene morning, with Nature making you go Ooh, Ah, and not ouch.

76 Are they really going to launch Bezos into space? I'm so conflicted about this.

At this point, that would not surprise me.

When the news is stuff like "Biden's approval is over 61%" and "We were LITERALLY minutes from a coup-insurrection-revolution by MAGAgranny on 1/6" and "Transwomen are totally women, biological sex is imaginary" and "BLMAntifa are just like your grandads who fought in WWII and yet also way better because they're not white" --- well, how could something true about Colonial Pipeline be in that mix?

They completely abandoned subtlety at some point - was it during lockdown? - and it's now sensational 'will to power brainwash' with the latest narratives.

78 I want the flight to be successful, but is it too much to ask that Bezos returns to a planet dominated by Lemurs?

80 Ugh...

What a dreary day.

*glances at forecast*

Doesn't look like it'll be changing much until Thursday.

81 On the FidelityFX a podcast I listen to mentioned the what if possibility of getting it to run on a Nintendo switch and how that could potentially help the graphics on that.

82 would say the year was 2000. Dec 12 2000, to be exact. The day Democrats took an oath to never let a Republican win a fair election again.

It's funny how 9/11 wasn't devastating in the obvious way we conservatives thought, isn't it?

84 When ever I see the name 'witch' why do I always think of Nancy P. My mothers name was Nancy and she was nothing like Nancy P. My mother was into politics and was the county clerk for several years and a Republican!

88 Got a check yesterday from the IRS noted Economic Impact Payment, although I have already received first three . The amount is not small, bigger that any of the others. However this is not the child tax credit prepayment which I also received a letter for and am told I will be receiving later. I think after doing my taxes IRS realized I had additional child and they upped my payment, but that doesn't explain the amount. WTF? Govt is showering Free Money on me. Feels good at the moment and I am sucking it up while I can since this will end in disaster soon and not being in any victim category I will be one of those expected to pay .

89 If you're in the mood for a live action "anime", check out " Sweet Tooth" on Netflix.

Very much influenced by Japanese anime and very well done- writing, acting, direction all superb.

The downside? While it's reasonably even handed with some nice twists, muddleheaded leftardery informs the plot .

Sometimes you want to watch giant robots flinging entire galaxies at each other, and sometimes you just want an engaging story of everyday life.
