69 Ugh. How grotesque. How crass and insensitive can you get? This painting dates from 1872, which was in the midst of the period we now call the "industrial revolution." That era was marked by violent labor confrontations, centralization of labor, increases in agricultural concentration and egregious maltreatment of workers by the owners of capital.

This image of youngsters on a farm looks bucolic and idyllic, but it is anything but. These children are fleeing the sweatshop pictured behind them, escaping their imposed child labor conditions. The taskmaster at the rear of the column - one of only two people with shoes - is trying to interrupt the laborers' escape. The leader of the uprising has fallen to the firmament, to be abandoned by those he helped to free after he stumbled.

This is not a joyful slice of life. This portrays the interrupted escape of indentured children at the hands of greedy robber baron capitalists who held them bound to a sweatshop. Even if they manage to escape, they will find only more of the same in the polluted, dangerous, impoverished industrial cities where they land.

This was a dark time, efforts to make it appear bucolic notwithstanding.

I'm not that old, but when I was a kid I had a year that I describe as my "feral summer." We had acreage at that time, much of it wooded and on a mountain. I asked my parents if I could hike up to our campsite and stay there. My dad agreed - and my mom went along with it - so long as I came back home at least once a day to check in. If I didn't, they'd come looking for me.

I spent most of that summer camping. I was maybe 10 or 11. It was awesome. I imagine it would be child endangerment now (hell, it probably was then).

My summers were spent in the city, in a "slave quarter" apartment around a patio, going to the public library a mile away or the downtown shopping and movie district a little closer, or (when I was younger) traipsing with my mother and brother to one of 3-4 local small groceries. We'd stop at one of the drugstores, I'd get the latest Superman or Jimmy Olsen or Batman comic, and I'd be set.

Things like parks and lakes and woods were outside my ken. (And my barbie, but that's a story for yet another day.)

113 What a great painting!! Sheer exuberance when boys could play as boys with the risks and danger and some nasty scrapes. Shoes didn't matter, ragged clothes didn't matter. Fun mattered. Then to be able to capture this with subtle, mild earth tones against a sunny blue sky, shadows marking the time of day, and smiling faces is wonderful. Nothing distracts from the boys and their fun.

This was possibly a contemporaneous image when Homer painted it. Now the strong sense of nostalgia, and a sense of lost boyhood, makes it even more precious.

I'm old enough to remember summer days like this and sad that they are a rarity these days. I am really torn between smiling and rage at the loss.

Same - striped maples work great for that. We'd run and launch off the top of beach hill (similar in shape/height to the hills leading up from D-Day beaches - climbable, but it took some work). On the way down we'd grab the top of a silver maple and it would gently deposit us about halfway down the hill. I'd like to do it again, but I was about 100 pounds lighter back then.

Keeps rising. But remember - only about 1 percent are reporting. I saw an interview with a nurse yesterday who said there is much resistance for them to report any problems with the vaccine. And a mother who lost a child recently from it saying they had to push the doctor to report it. That it was going on deaf ears. They did not want any parent to go through this. She did not know this could happen. They simply are not telling anyone. It's all being hidden.

Some animals - including all of the great apes and humans - have hardwired snake-detection circuitry in the brain. You see a snake and react before you even realize you saw it. I learned about this *long* after I experienced it.

In college, my girlfriend lived in a basement apartment in a horrible building. She broke lease and moved, and I helped her move. I was picking up a box from her closet and the next thing I knew I was standing on her bed. She asked me what happened. I looked around, saw that I had moved, but had no memory as to how I got there. I responded, "I don't know."

Then I saw a snake slither out of a seam in the carpet in the closet, right by the box I had dropped. That detection circuitry works extremely well in my brain, I guess...

A combination of being useful and being necessary. This isn't atypical. There are lies and prevarication and great progress made during the time of lies. Then there is a regrouping as the seams start to split and things start to leak out.

When that regrouping happens, there are two choices: crack down harder and more violently, or spin it as "some things were wrong but overall we were right and proper and what we did worked." This allows you to maintain some credibility and general cooperation if you pull it off. Cracking down is expensive, dangerous and high-risk.

I suspect they're going for door #2.

We are used to the elderly or very young from getting the flu (not shot), but not death from a vaccine. It is WAY more deaths than any other vaccine or all vaccines combined. Again, read the American Thinker. This is the not the first article that discusses this. The number of deaths have gone way past the threshold of pulling it from use. The numbers are hideous. Sort of. For about 25% of men, there are no limits. For about the next 50%, there are some limits but not too many. For the bottom 25%, there is no opportunity whatsoever unless you pay for it. That 25% has a lot of money (in aggregate) and thus represents significant opportunity.

It tops my list by far. I'm on my 4th time watching -- this time with my son who's watching for the first time. Only 2 episodes remain for us. He loves it too. Not sure where it ranks for him. He needs to see the ending - which is flawless IMO.

I think my dad and step-mom got the Maderna one, or whatever.

Dad had a brain hemorrhage in 06, so he wasn't without medical conditions, however he's had a couple bouts of dementia after the 2nd shot.

He walked out of the bedroom one day, looked at his wife and said "What is this place?" He wasn't satisfied until he looked in every room and checked things for himself.

He's had another episode, but I don't remember details on that one.

392 How else am I supposed to work out my daddy issues?

If you'd had a real father who could've told you the difference between right and wrong, you wouldn't have Daddy issues. Also, you listening to someone who truly loved you might have made a difference, and it still can.

Posted by: rickb223 at June 15, 2021 09:50 AM (T2Zv1)

Don't remind me. If you work in a hospital, you decrease the risk of your patients dying by about 5-fold by getting all the MDs and nurses vaccinated. But this virus blew through nursing homes like nothing. Like I say, look at the excess mortality, all causes. The spike is impressive. For sure, some of it is due to the social reaction, but not the majority, especially in the early days.
I'm really concerned about the long term effects of the social isolating measures. That shit is really bad for people on the edge. I'm gonna be seeing a ripple effect for a while.

Totally serious here. I would be interested in hearing more about this. Not getting jabbed is not an option unless I change jobs before 08/01 and I was inclined toward the JJ specifically because it wasn't mRNA.
Posted by: Oddbob at June 15, 2021 09:53 AM (nfrXX)

The problem with these has already been stated who have analyzed the vaccine. The jab is supposed to go into the muscle (you typically get it in the arm) and is NOT supposed to go into the blood stream. But it is. There is something wrong with the formula. That is why the poison is accumulating in women's ovaries and whatnot causing havoc. That is why babies are dying. That is why people are getting kickback from it. It's been pointed out, but we'll see if they fix it. Once you get it, there is no going back.

Posted by: Oddbob at June 15, 2021 09:53 AM (nfrXX)

So far the mRNA ones are actually a bit safer. The protein based ones you get this pulse of antigen, and there are two issues with that: the spike protein itself is like a toxin, in that it sets off a response that is damaging. The other is that, like any vaccine, its a big pulse of antigen, so you get a brisk immune response to generate your antibodies, and those antibodies can react with other things in your body, which is sometimes not so great.
With the mRNA based ones, its more like a weak viral infection. Maybe it's less of a big whack of the spike protein all at once. It's an amazing technology.
