36 Interesting note on Sisley at Wiki, saying the Nazi art looters stole quite a few Sisleys that have never been recovered. I imagine they are sitting in the basements of Swiss banks, and are now "owned" by the bankers.

Switzerland has that weird, self-serving banking law giving control of left property to the banks and not obligating them to make even minor efforts to restore the art to its rightful owners.

42 Impressionist art like this is always much better in person. I'm not sure why, but photos never do the images justice. Still, most of them leave me cold because so many seem more like exercises than art.

This image in its self, even if painted with photo clarity, would not be particularly interesting in layout or content. The colors are well rendered, but not striking. Its just the kind of thing an amateur, unskilled photographer would take to show a relative way over there on the dock.

47 Interesting note on Sisley at Wiki, saying the Nazi art looters stole quite a few Sisleys that have never been recovered.

Possibly destroyed, many Nazis weren't fond of impressionist art and would burn some of it. Also, war isn't easy on art. But yeah, a lot of it just was taken and kept in the family by Germans or discovered when the allies invaded and some soldier took it home (or had it 'confiscated' by a superior officer who put it in their home).

57 The scene is pleasant but what really appeals to me is the quality and clarity of light Sisley captures. There is a vibrancy in the sky and water, set off by the neutrals of the stone work, that makes the painting come alive. Looking through some of his other works on the Wiki page, that same quality comes through, Wish I knew more about his materials and techniques.

Seeing the brush strokes is important even in less extreme cases than Van Gogh. I used to have an art teacher who urged us to get so close to the paintings that it put the museum workers on high alert; or at least woke them up.

I can't say why, but over the years I have become more receptive to impressionism. At one time, this work would have received a one word review from me. I probably still don't love it but I don't hate it either. Maybe the world just isn't as clear to me as it once was.

159 To me painting is much more than an exact reproduction of the subject matter. That's photography

Sure, composition, interpretation, and so on all play a part. But for something to truly become art instead of craft, it has to give the viewer or listener a glimpse into the transcendent, a tiniest hint of the holy that comes through. Basically it gives a backward glimpse of the reflected glory of God, in some small way.

Its okay to be an amazing craftsman, there's honor and respect to be had in that. Just don't think its art. I write a book, no matter how well I write it, its just a story. But some take that to another level and it becomes something wonderful and timeless.

I can't argue with that claim, but its irrelevant to the discussion. Everyone is not and never will be a pacifist on this earth, so all that claim ends up being is an attempt to seize virtue: if everyone was like me then we'd all live in paradise! Most religions make this claim, with very few exceptions.

Christianity does not: it admits sin even when saved, and the need for forgiveness and repentance every day.

198 BREAKING NEWS: Currently, over 7.24% of McDonald's ice cream machines in America are broken. "

That is a feature of the machines. They throw a fault that only a "factory technician" can clear. The franchise owners must use that specific machine, and must call that specific machines technician. It is a corporate kickback to the machine maker. The machine maker supplies most fast food restaurants ice cream machines, but only McDonalds has this douchey arrangement.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor, world's most respected Fantasy Hero writer at June 07, 2021 09:26 AM (KZzsI)

Except that Gandhi's strategy for India DEPENDED on violence. Violence was the whole point. Provoking the Limeys into getting their truncheons out and therefore putting the lie to their pretensions of civil behavior would embarrass them enough that they would quit. Only the Limeys would be concerned enough about their image that this would be effective. Gandhi chose this method because he perceived that it would be successful. If he thought armed resistance would have had better odds, he'd have been calling for the guns.

The idiotic view of Gandhi as a paragon of non-violence really annoys me.

364 I think Kimmel affected the ocare repeal effort. He motivated a lot of Dems to fight it and scared a lot of RINOs out of it.

366 I mean, it's stupid, but it's a theory.-------------------------------I think its plausible. Not in the way that all justices got together to do it, but that things align sometimes for reasons. Deals are cut in weird ways at the Court. Perhaps there was a deal on this and we will be screwed on abortion. So I give the theory at least some credence.

371 I'm reading that SCOTUS just handed down a unanimous ruling on an illegal alien case and ruled against the illegal alien.

Progress.

It's pretty narrow. Basically, the lower court said that whatever the illegal alien testified to in court (e.g. political persecution, threats, etc.) had to be taken as true unless a judge explicitly ruled otherwise. Supes basically just said "Naw. He gets the same assumption of truthfulness as anybody else."
