The NFL's Ratings Are Falling Even As They Are Renegotiating Their TV Deals
The ratings from NBC's Sunday night game fell 16.1% from the ratings of the first 2019 Sunday game (and that game's ratings had fallen from the year before, too).
Now the ratings for the Monday night games falls 17.2%.ESPN's first outing of the 2020 National Football League featuring the New York Giants hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers attracted an average of 10.76 million viewers on Monday night the network announced, down 17.2% from last year's first Monday night game.That's just the drop for the first game. What was the drop for the second game? Well, CNBC doesn't want to tell you. They're going to make you work out the math.
The second game between the Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos registered 7.6 million viewers as the Titans won, 16-14. The viewership was down from last year’s average of 13 million viewers for the first game in the Monday Night Football doubleheader that featured the Houston Texans and New Orleans Saints.That's a drop of 43%. Forty. Three. Percent. ESPN looks for something to brag about -- and it's sad what they try to brag about. Monday's first game was between two of the most-watched teams in football: The Giants, which play in the huge NYC market, and the Steelers, which don't have a huge market but they have a large following because they're in the f#cking AFC championship game like once every two years. Seriously: When do the Steelers not make the playoffs? Almost never. Now, ESPN does admit that Giants-Steelers game was down from the 2019 opener. But they say that at least the ratings were better than the 2018 opener. The problem with that is that the 2018 opener featured two teams which are perennial losers and who have almost no following outside their metro areas, the Jets and the Lions.

Now, about those contract renegotiations with the networks: the Observer notes that literally billions are at stake. That is, the NFL may have to settle for a contract that is billions shy of what they were hoping for. Get woke...
What we do know for certain is that the NFL and broadcast networks are in the process of renegotiating their media deals, the majority of which will expire after the 2022 season. The league is hoping to double their fees and as the most powerful annual driver of live-viewership, they hold the leverage. I had to type a few where the petitioners owned a business with employees. Every employee was listed as a creditor, and wage claims are considered unsecured debts.
Result: all the employees got was a letter stating, your bosses have declared bankruptcy and are therefore unable to pay you anything, the end.

The Steelers have tried so hard to be woke for so many years and I guess they keep stepping on a rake. This is the second time the soldier, veteran, and patriot Villeneuva has bucked his team to support soldiers who have passed.
But Pouncey also broke ranks and I think he is the team captain. Again, the Steelers are a train wreck at least when it comes to posturing. It is funny because I would bet most of their fans would ask them to simply stop.
The Cowboys had bad ratings on Sunday and that is a huge deal. The Cowboys are as close to a guaranteed ratings victory as you can get in professional sports. But even though only one Cowboy has knelt in the three years or so since this started, the entire NFL is being drug down by their own devices. The Cowboys are not immune as they are one of the key NFL franchises and the NFL has decided that taking one radical side is the way to go. OK, and enjoy the losses friends, and I don't mean on the field.

that is true, but not during the Anthem. Trust me, i am not splitting hairs like they all do, it was shameful. Jones has to sick as so much of what he has worked for is failing and flailing. Only one Cowboy has knelt during the actual Anthem since all this started, and that was one guy last week.

You'd only do it maybe once in a game, to let the D-line rack up your QB. Then some other members of the O-line (or maybe a back) can "miss" a block and get the QB racked up again.
A couple of three or four of those in a game wouldn't look all that out of the ordinary, and yet the QB would probably end up clocking some serious whirlpool time.

Yep, lots of people in NFL cities do their own podcasts, and just plain pirate the NFL Films for their own use. I can dig that. Sure some get taken down, but I should be able to find some quasi-legal way to watch them each week.

Jerruh tried to quell a revolt but coming up with the kneel together before the Anthem thing. Yes it was better than the alternative, but not good enough, not good enough at all. He was sick about it though. I don't get why the Houston Texans are trying to be the wokest and compete with the CA teams for that title. Not the Houston I used to know I guess.

Look, it's America. Anyone can do anything they want. But it's also perfectly reasonable for people to disapprove of what others do, even harshly. Players can kneel, and I can think less of them for it. Commenters can watch the kneelers (and thereby support them financially), and I can think less of them for it.

"A victim of police violence"? Are they kidding? Rose was no victim. And that cop who shot him was just doing his job. He was on the street, in a neighborhood full of violent thugs like Rose, and he was out-numbered and trying to keep from being killed himself.
That's why the cop's jury, which included three blacks, voted to acquit the cop of all charges.
There are legitimate victims of overzealous and/or inept cops (e.g. Justine Damond, Breonna Taylor) but Antwon Rose was not one of those victims.
