The FBI Knew That Steele Lied About Leaking His "Research" to Yahoo News, But Lied to the FISA Court About It Anyway
Great twitter thread there, which I've copied below the fold. Grassley and Ron Johnson are continuing to push cover-up artist Christopher Wray to release documents he's been withholding.The Republican chairmen of two Senate committees are questioning how much of the FBI's Crossfire Hurricane probe was "infected" by Russian disinformation, citing newly declassified information regarding the Steele dossier. "Because these facts show the intention, means, and ability to plant Russian disinformation in Steele's reporting, they suggest that the prevalence of such disinformation in the FBI's Crossfire Hurricane investigation may have been widespread," Sens. Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson wrote in a letter Thursday to FBI Director Christopher Wray. The lawmakers are calling on Wray to turn over all intelligence documents reviewed by the bureau's Crossfire Hurricane team, which conducted the counterintelligence probe of the Trump campaign. The letter is a follow-up to revelations over the past week that the FBI received evidence in 2017 that Russian operatives may have fed disinformation to Christopher Steele that ended up in the ex-spy's dossier. The footnotes, which Grassley and Johnson shook loose after a months-long battle with the Justice Department, said that the FBI received evidence on Jan. 12, 2017, that Steele's findings regarding former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen were likely planted by Russian intelligence operatives.See this Chuck Ross article for more on Russia's "penetration" of Christopher Steele's firm, Orbis. But Mueller went forward with the investigation anyway -- and Rosenstein continued certifying FISA applications. Grassley and Johnson note something important: despite many leaks from the FBI (including Mueller's team) that painted the Trump administration as having worked with Russia, somehow the FBI and Mueller kept the finding that Steele had himself published Russian disinformation was kept under lock and key, and never leaked to anyone.

"For years, the public was fed a healthy diet of leaks, innuendo and false information to imply that President Trump and his campaign were part of a Russian conspiracy to spread disinformation," they said in a statement upon the release of three footnotes from the Justice Department inspector general’s (IG) report on the FBI’s surveillance of the Trump campaign. The previously-classified footnotes said that an organization not identified in the IG report provided the FBI evidence that Russian operatives fed disinformation that wound up in the dossier.That article also contains a very useful refresher about CNN and the Washington Post repeatedly claiming the dossier had been mostly "verified" by the FBI. DNA evidence proved a guy was sitting in jail for close to ten years wasn't the killer but the DA kept him locked up for an additional 5 or so because he COULD have been there even though it wasn't his DNA.
A lot of people just aren't brave enough to admit to a mistake or that the system is broken. They just keep going along.

I'd be surprised if anyone can get around soverign immunity to go after the actual people involved. And even then, I'd be even more surprised if the DOJ / FBI doesnt pay for the individuals' legal representation.
Here's the thing guys -- as I've been saying all along (and I know i'm cynical, I hope I'm wrong here), the people who put this whole thing together know the laws, write the laws, and set everything up to legal protect themselves with just enough plausible deniability that I don't think anything will happen to them.

You cannot replace the FBI with one organization. You need to set up several, at least three competing and adversarial organizations. Yes you will lose efficiency, but they will back bite and fight amongst each other, hopefully preventing this entire Crossfire Hurricane Attempted Coup de Etat

How about a subdivision of the federal court system that's designed to deal with crimes that go across state lines? Individual states are responsible for catching, investigating, and trying criminals. They can coordinate with other states, or other states can refuse to cooperate?

Not sure I am a big fan of the courts taking over investigation roles as well, although in practice maybe courts are completely in bed with law enforcement anyway so probably does not matter. Maybe the FBI has done something right over the years, but I'm not aware of any great successes that came from hard work and talent.

What we want is rates, and you can get that through designed experiments that track random samples of the population. We could have had several teams working on this concurrently from the beginning of March and have a very clear idea by now what the real rates are instead of relying on self-reported testing of people who show up to hospitals sick.
The CDC is filled with people who understand statistics and experimental design, and they didn't do this.

Yes, I have thought about this and I like it.
Enumerate all law-enforcement activities in which the FBI engages. Rank the list from most important to least important. Take the top 25 most important items and transfer those duties to the Marshals. Then shut down the FBI and fire everyone who works for them.
FBI agents from the LE side (NOT the intelligence side) may reapply for work in the Marshals with no guarantee of hiring, as long as they have been at the FBI for less than 5 years or more than 15 years and have never held a management position including special agent in charge. New or veteran field agents only.

But if they can test a big enough random sampling of a population for the antibodies...that gives them an idea of just how bad this is. From what I understand, that's what this study is. They're trying to get a big enough random sample to determine how dangerous this thing actually is.
One thing, if the % of the population in the study holds out, then the virus actually got to that county *late* and not in early december-january (or it's not nearly as infectious as everyone was screaming).
The other thing, is if that sample was truly random enough, then we also know that the lethality of the thing is far less than the screeching harpies would have us believe.

We need Federal Law Enforcement. There is no way Maryland will ever clean up Baltimore, nor Illinois clean up Chicago. Forget anyone at the state level ever touching the corrupt mess that is California.

In terms of the real world data sets out there, from what I understand the South Korea numbers are probably the most robust, and, yeah, they indicate much lower death rates than just about anyone else.

Abbott opened some businesses to curbside pickup and state parks are opened Monday, however gatherings of 5 or less and masks must be worn.

Enumerate all law-enforcement activities in which the FBI engages. Rank the list from most important to least important. Take the top 25 most important items and transfer those duties to the Marshals. Then shut down the FBI and fire everyone who works for them.
FBI agents from the LE side (NOT the intelligence side) may reapply for work in the Marshals with no guarantee of hiring, as long as they have been at the FBI for less than 5 years or more than 15 years and have never held a management position including special agent in charge. New or veteran field agents only.

Recall all the way back to yesterday, when objective standards for relaxing restrictions were issued by the WH. Any governor going outside/beyond those guidelines, absent some X factor everyone can see, will be sticking their face into a buzzsaw. That is, it won't happen.
And those guidelines, like everything else in this story, of course, as was obvious all along, may shift in reaction to experience and more info becoming available. So even those may be softened/lowered.
