Thread before the Gardening Thread July 27 [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

nancyinprison.jpg

It's been quite a week, hasn't it? Via Larry Elder, could Nancy have some friends in prison soon?

This assessment by VDH from back in May seems even more accurate this week than it did then: Democrats face a bleak post-Mueller landscape.

Remember this moment in time?

Democrats have grown infuriated by Attorney General William Barr's indifference to their hysteria over the Trump-Russia collusion narrative.

Barr recently released a brief summary of special counsel Robert Mueller's conclusions that Donald Trump did not collude with the Russians to warp the 2016 election. Barr added that Mueller had not found enough evidence to recommend that Trump be indicted for obstruction of justice for the non-crime of collusion.

Progressives, who for 22 months had insisted that Trump was a Russian asset, were stunned. But only for a few hours.

Almost immediately, they redirected their fury toward Barr's summation of the Mueller report. Yet few rational people contested Barr's synopses about collusion and obstruction.

They should have moved on:

But now Democrats are calling for Barr to resign or be impeached for not regurgitating the unproven allegations against Trump. In other words, Barr acted too much like a federal prosecutor rather than a tabloid reporter trafficking in allegations that did not amount to criminal conduct.

The besmirching of Barr's conduct is surreal. He certainly has not done anything even remotely approximating the conduct of former President Obama's two attorneys general.

They should have moved on:

The Mueller report ignored the likely illegal origins of the Christopher Steele dossier, the insertion of an FBI informant into the Trump campaign, the unlawful leaking of documents, and the conflicted testimonies of former high-level intelligence officials.

All of those things were potential felonies. All in some way yielded information that Mueller drew on in his investigation. Yet Mueller never recommended a single indictment of any of the Obama-era officials who likely broke laws.

They should have moved on:

Since late 2015, Trump, as the supposed Russian puppet or the Machiavellian obstructer of justice, was nightly cable-TV news fare. Now, such fantasies are shattered. But progressives are not willing to let the Mueller investigation rest in peace and move on with their lives.

Perhaps they feel in the political sense that there is nothing to move on to. . .

They should have moved on.

Is there something for them to move on to?

Language Control, Image Control, Thought Control

Peggy Noonan asks, What were Robespierre's Pronouns?

We start with the moral and political catastrophe that was the French Revolution. It was more a nationwide psychotic break than a revolt--a great nation at its own throat, swept by a spirit not only of regicide but suicide. For 10 years they simply enjoyed killing each other. They could have done what England was doing--a long nonviolent revolution, a gradual diminution of the power of king and court, an establishment of the rights of the people and their legislators so that the regent ended up a lovely person on a stamp. Instead they chose blood. . .

It was a revolution largely run by sociopaths. One, Robespierre, the "messianic schoolmaster," saw it as an opportunity for the moral instruction of the nation. Everything would be politicized, no part of the citizen's life left untouched. As man was governed by an "empire of images," in the words of a Jacobin intellectual, the new regime would provide new images to shape new thoughts. There would be pageants, and new names for things. They would change time itself! The first year of the new Republic was no longer 1792, it was Year One. . .

I thought of all this this week because I've been thinking about the language and behavioral directives that have been coming at us from the social and sexual justice warriors who are renaming things and attempting to control the language in America. . .

Elizabeth Scalia:

His/Her--Zir, Hir, Eir, Vis, Tem, Eir
Himself/Herself--Zieself, Hirself, Eirself, Verself, Terself, Emself

People are free to call themselves whatever they want. I'm free to be uninterested in learning a new language.

(slightly edited to remove Twitter length restrictions on language)

Ed Driscoll's response to the Noonan piece this morning is that Jessica Yaniv is the Democratic Party Poster Gal. With a piece by Rod Dreher.

I was thinking along similar lines, except that I thought first of the Canadians. How could they go along with state enforcement of sexual assault by a sexual predator? Seems like a sociopath to me. How were people conditioned to accept this? I think Ace had some thoughts along these lines yesterday about why nobody has called Hillary to testify under oath about payments for Russian collusion.

Democratic Presidential Race

Something a little different from outlier Andrew Yang, perhaps with AOC and The Squad particularly in mind:

I'd make financial literacy a national priority and provide free financial counseling to all who need it - I studied Economics in college and still didn't understand personal finance until years later.

I think greater financial literacy in the USA is a great idea. I have my reservations about what free federal financial counseling would look like. Anyway, maybe it's because I've only casually encountered him on Twitter, but Yang seems like a guy with a bunch of random ideas.

Music

I always thought the words to La Marseillaise were kind of bloody. Can't say it's not rousing, though. Pick your fights carefully.

27 Nice little summary of this past week.

Lots of people, when they dismiss the uniqueness of our current political culture, fail to see parallels to the past, because people tend not to be able to look past the nazis and the commies in their language.

The french have been mucking up politics for a long long time, and that supposedly rational nation, perhaps one of the "greatest" nations in the long history of human politics, has spent much of the past two centuries self destructing... and they're still not done.

It takes a long long time for a great nation to destroy itself.

Or it doesn't.

I wouldn't count on America having that much time. We either have a course correction, or it might be dead in our lifetimes (if we live that long).

I seem to recall a documentary about the making of Casablanca that claimed that the reason so many of the people at "Rick's" were so emotional while singing La Marseillaise was that they were refugees from France. (The movie was filmed while WWII was still on-going).

Yep, they've made the decision that there will be an American Civil War v2.0. Democrats started the last one for precisely the same reason: a Presidential election did not go in their favor and they also refused to acknowledge the winner. Yeah I was surprised. I was measuring current in the output tubes, and this amp had a deep chassis, so when I went to pull back on one of the probes I hit the chassis and grounded it while the other probe was still on the tube socket. It died horribly. I never saw a glass fuse explode like that.

One thing we have insulating us from a replay of The Terror is the relative safety and affluence of Americans by and large. France went to shit in a hurry because there was a critical mass of angry, panicked, starving, ignorant peasants willing to go along with whoever would shake up the status quo.

I just don't think America has that raw material need for a real revolution.

Troublemakers, yes, but not a sustainable revolution.

---------

This is a serious worry. NPCs have been trained by the media and academic churches to be completely ignorant and raged out to the max about everything. They're basically nothing but balls of nameless anger as a baseline condition, and Trump has been made into the bete noir, the idol of their hate.

They were told daily for YEARS that Brave Sir Mueller would slay the dragon, yea verily. Now Mueller lies defeated on the field. None of their priestly class, through various incantations of prayers and curses on the floor of the House Temple were able to bring down the beast who said they should go back where they came from. Friar Green's Holy Articles of Impeachment were powerless against the demon, who laughed in the face of remonstrances by Goody Cortez and Goody Omar.

The only thing left is to Burn the Witch.

I think attempts on Trump's life just became inevitable.

118 I think greater financial literacy in the USA is a great idea.

I agree. I think, however, that "financial literacy" is more of an excuse than a problem. The real problem is "financial discipline". I was in my youth, for general purposes, "financially literate": I knew how to balance a checkbook, that I needed to have savings and a retirement plan.

What I didn't have was self-discipline and got myself into credit card debt, had a vehicle repo, and generally lived hand-to-mouth for years. I other words, I knew *what* I should be doing, but I didn't have the self-discipline to *actually do it* until I got into my 30s.

I think that, on a larger scale, this lack of self-discipline in the population is being exacerbated by political promises of debt-forgiveness and EZ home loans, et cetera. As a result, there's no incentive to become financially self-disciplined.

149 Re the French Revolution, the Europeans generally and the French in particular are fuck-ups. They can't do anything right, yet they think they're brilliant, despite a plethora of evidence to the contrary. Even when they try to emulate a successful model, they fuck it up.

I give you:

the French Revolution - partially at least inspired by the American Revolution

The various revolutions of 1848 - let's not address our social problems, let's just let left-wing agitators stir the soup

the Franco-Prussian War - the French were eager to teach the Germans a lesson. Apparently the lesson was how to march through Paris.

WWI - the French were eager for "revanche," and reclaiming Alsace and Lorraine. We'll mass our troops there, because the Germans will never go through Belgium. Heinie status: kicked.

the Treaty of Versailles - let's grind the faces of an industrious, organized, proud, and efficient people into the dirt, then leave them to their own devices. What could go wrong?

Weimar Republic: OK, the Kaiser is gone, let's enact a hopelessly feeble leftist type of government while reparations gut our economy. What's the worst that could happen? Having Communists and Nazis fight it out in the street?

WWII - OK, the Treaty of Versailles didn't work out, and now we've got a problem. Even though the German army is tiny (100,000) and ours is huge (80 divisions, IIRC), let's face it, they're a lot tougher than we are, so let's build a wall to keep the Germans out. No need to worry about the Ardennes forest, though, they can't come through there anyway. And besides, the Maginot Line is impenetrable. Unfortunately, the Germans didn't get the memo. Heinie status: kicked

Indochina: OK, OK, we kicked the Germans out of France - I mean, after all, our troops led the parade through Paris, right, so we must have defeated the Germans. Now let's go back to Indochina and try to re-establish our colonies there, as though we still matter. Heinie status: kicked

Algeria: Algeria is an integral part of France, and we don't care who we have to torture and kill to keep it that way. Heinie status: kicked

Immigration: OK, we Europeans have been a clannish, nationalistic sort, so let's let every wog in the world into our countries just to prove that we're nice guys now. This won't lead to any problems. Heinie status: kicked

Foreign policy: We Europeans like to pretend that we matter, at least more than, say, Bolivia. So let's throw our non-existent weight around and write sternly worded letters on perfumed paper. That should work. Meanwhile, we'll shit on America, and agitate for any Democrat Presidential candidate, especially if he's effeminate (*cough* Obama *cough*). He'll protect us, by which we mean do we what want, unless that becomes inconvenient. Sure, Ukraine, give up your nuclear weapons. Bill Clinton promised to protect you from the Russians. Then Obama sashayed into office and called off the jam. You fucked up: you trusted a Democrat.

I just don't think America has that raw material need for a real revolution.

Troublemakers, yes, but not a sustainable revolution.

he may be irrelevant in influence today, but he laid a lot of groundwork that Barky weaponized (and maybe Bushies weaponized it to some degree, idk). The Stellar Wind type spy programs were implemented, where we spied on the world freely. Barky used that to spy, well before Trump was on the scene. Judges and Congress were spied on ... we don't know all the details.

Iraq War ... imo maybe we should have gone in fast, and won decisively ... but the years of winning hearts and minds, of ROEs that got us killed ... seems that is where we lost it, and paved the way for Obama to give aid to the enemy (Iran deal, arms to ISIS, Benghazi Fluck up, etc.)

And Bush as DeepState/CIA friend, continued the globalist build out of the NWO ... which seems to have paved the way for the "Insurance Policy" type actions by DeepState and a compromised FiveEyes.

The legacy of Bush is still actively pushing impeachment, as we funded their coup. We just hope the American Greatness worm has turned ... tick tock.

180 Re financial literacy, I walked my sons through a credit card statement, and explained exactly how revolving credit works: no interest if paid off in the grace period, but whacking great interest if not. The bank is hoping you'll pay the minimum, because you don't get a grace period at all if you have an outstanding balance: you pay interest on any new charges from the minute you make them.

My two cardinal rules for them:

1. Read the smallest print the most assiduously. That's where the crap is buried.

2. Sweat any recurring expenses VERY hard. "It's only $X per month!" is a fool's perspective. One-off purchases are not the problem. Recurring expenses are the budget busters.

The problem is that they don't have the requisite feedback loop.

They do X, but Y does not happen. Now scientists are taught that that means the original model was flawed, and needs a rethink.

A TENS provides temporary pain relief; it doesn't heal.

An EMS unit, which is similar to TENS but is capable of a different (deeper) frequency, will stimulate muscles, even to the point of hypertrophy (muscle building). At the very least, it will pump some blood into the muscle thus providing nutrients for healing.

Their problem is that the situation is metastable. It's kind of a real-life version of the Prisoner's Dilemma. The temptation of someone who is juuuuuust out out of the running to deliver a cheapshot in hopes of moving up is just too great. The lesson of Calamari Harris - moving up dramatically after cheapshotting Biden - surely cannot have been lost on the other retards.

Plus, Biden has already said "no more Mr. Nice Guy." The debate is going to be like keeping the peace at a gang meeting between the Bloods and the Crips. One edged remark, and it's on.

Actually, Pink Floyd was not a big drug band. Roger Waters admitted he smoked tobacco and hash for about 5 years, but only did acid twice. No hard drugs. David Gilmour said he only did acid a few times, but "it was obviously not our thing." Now, Syd Barrett, that's a different story. But, when you thing of Pink Floyd music now, you rarely think of Syd Barrett.

293 I'd make financial literacy a national priority and provide free financial counseling to all who need it - I studied Economics in college and still didn't understand personal finance until years later.

What ever happened to "Home Economics" classes in High School? I remember taking some kind of course in High School (1990-1994) where we learned about different types of loans and how compound interest worked in each of the different loans.

But, it was not a "Home Economics" course, but more math and statistics focused.

I think it would be a HUGE benefit to society if we had mandatory "Home Economics" courses which taught teenagers about the importance of setting a personal budget, paying bills, savings accounts, what it takes to purchase a car, what it takes to purchase a house, the expenses for renting an apartment vs expenses for a house, etc.

I used to use software such as Microsoft Money and Quickenbooks to track all my earnings and expenses and plan my savings for big purchases. They each had features in the program which allowed you to estimate your future income and expenses based on past income and expenses, so you could plan a year ahead.

Also, this "Home Economics" course could explain all the taxes that are withdrawn from the average paycheck. That would be really eye-opening I bet for the average teenager.

Interesting. One of those Minnesotans at Powerline says he was told months ago that Omar had basically abandoned her family there and wanted hubby to divorce her. I thought maybe she got bored and preferred the celebrity life in DC.

But between the husband's actions and that cryptic twitter thread from the Imam of Peace the other day, it seems something's afoot and I don't think they'll be able to keep a lid on it. People seem to be out for themselves by now.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at July 27, 2019 02:26 PM

And that is the main point, I think, of these courses: get exposure to basic skills and knowledge of economics so one can feel comfortable doing things themselves and be independent and run their lives themselves.

You can even add basic cooking lessons in these courses. And then work in the economics of how much it costs to buy groceries from the store and make meals at home --- including meal prep --- compared to the cost of eating out or eating fast food.

i.e. compare how many burgers can be made from buying ground beef, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, condiments, etc. and making burgers at home compared to the average burger at a restaurant.

Now I'm not particularly good at any of these things, but I've done them before, and for DIY stuff around the house, that's useful experience.

Most definitely. And invaluable experience. Again, the course could reinforce the economic benefit to knowing basic maintenance and DIY skills around the home compared to the cost of paying for someone to do the work.

The biggest problem, I know, is that the American school system is not about making better citizens, but about indoctrinating children and teens to be dependent and easily duped citizens.

I dunno, Michelle Obama worries me. Despite the fact that she's a rabid America-hating, radical racist, she seems to be universally loved by LIVs.

But, I would hope that President Trump would expose all her dirty little secrets that the media spiked, such as her patient-dumping scheme in Chicago.

That aside, what even qualifies Michelle Obama for the Presidency? Other than her patient-dumping job she got through the corrupt IL machine after Barack was elected to Senate, what other job has she held? Is she a lawyer?

I mean, people mock President Trump as just being a "reality show celebrity", but he has a long career has a successful businessman for decades. Michelle basically has a long career of being a racist and that's about it.

368 Oprah is a worry. She'd be a threat to Trump.

On the other hand , the 24/7 media attention , glowing, editorials, the adoration and total bias will be so over-the-top that it's liable to turn off the very segment of voters she would need to beat Trump.

Posted by: JoeF. at July 27, 2019 03:31 PM (NFEMn)

369 Right-Oprah comes in late, missing debates except for Trump, She checks the correct boxes and MSM presents gushing stories about what a great listener she is and how she has helped so many people.

370 158 One thing we have insulating us from a replay of The Terror is the relative safety and affluence of Americans by and large. France went to shit in a hurry because there was a critical mass of angry, panicked, starving, ignorant peasants willing to go along with whoever would shake up the status quo.

I just don't think America has that raw material need for a real revolution.

Troublemakers, yes, but not a sustainable revolution.

Like I said, the ultimate challenge, the ultimate calling, the fulfillment of everything she's ever done and striven for. Of course there will be no vetting of Oprah. It would be interesting to hear her answers to policy questions, though. Iran? North Korea? Border security? With any luck we won't hear about it as she'll conclude she can "do more good" in her capacity as Goddess of Her Own Realm. Trump might even be smart to create a Department of Self-Esteem and appoint her as Secretary.

He needs to quit considering it and fucking do it, already. Antifa has already escalated "punching 'nazis'" to "fire-bombing 'nazis'" with the blessing of the Democrat Party. Given the photos that surfaced a couple of weeks ago, "mass shooting of 'nazis'" is inevitable.

He does a lot of considering. He considered closing the border with Mexico. He considered closing the country to ALL Guatemalan immigrants. He considered declassifying those FISA warrants and the Mueller report. Yes, he needs to start doing some of those things.

404 B. Morticia, barriers should/must be built, but, not relevant to *this* particular outrageous scam [fake asylum]. They can present themselves at ports of entry.

Very very very belated action now being taken [rule change, bilateral smackdowns on MX, Guatemala, other things] to address fake asylum.

Administration looking like it will continue to promote constitutional disintegration by doing anything other than repudiating latest court vandalism, done on behalf of parties without standing in an area where executive discretion is broad and enshrined in statute, that "blocks" asylum rule change.
