Saturday Evening Movie Thread 07-28-2018 [Hosted By: TheJamesMadison]

A Break

Happy Saturday, all.

Commenter A.H. Lloyd reached out to me a couple of weeks ago because I had not written the ultimate post about Flash Gordon that he knew we all needed, so he went ahead and wrote it for me.

I didn't object. I've written 71 of these in a row and needed a little break. So, without further ado, let's talk about 80s decadence!

Flash Gordon

Greeting, fellow movie Morons! A.H. Lloyd here, giving ThejamesMadison a much-deserved break. Some of you may remember me from the book thread, and maybe a few of you bought my amazing books, which are available for sale via http://www.ahlloyd.com.

Crass commercialism aside, some of you know I'm a big Star Wars fan, and my Man of Destiny series was an attempt to 'fix' the prequels. Tonight I want to go revisit a close contemporary of the original film that has been almost completely overlooked by the popular culture.

Like Star Wars, it's a sprawling, big-screen space opera the looms larger than life and features an iconic, unmistakable soundtrack.

I am of course referring to Flash Gordon.

72. Flash Gordon 01.jpg

Some folks might consider it a knock-off, but that actually gets the relationship backwards. Star Wars drew its inspiration from the Flash Gordon serials back in the day. In fact, George Lucas reputedly wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie, and only made Star Wars when he couldn't get the rights.

So when Star Wars turned into a huge success, it was only natural that Hollywood would figure that a straight-up Flash Gordon film would be a good bet.

Alas, it didn't work out that way. The movie did well in the UK, but was disappointment in the US.

Still, I loved it as a kid and as an adult, I appreciate it even more. There is a lot of depth to this film so long as you pay attention.

Beneath the Surface

That's because Flash Gordon isn't just a space opera - it's an incisive and clever allegory for the US relationship with Europe during the 20th Century told from the European point of view. Once you realize that, it becomes one of the best movies of all time.

Mongo is really Europe with Ming representing the constant threat of dictatorship. Earth (that is, the United States) doesn't want to get involved, but we're dragged into it anyway.

Flash is the archetypal American: big, strong, honest to a fault and hilariously ignorant He has no idea who anyone is, or what's going on, but he's going to do his best to fix it.

The locals are at first contemptuous of his blunt stupidity, but are won over by his bravery and complete lack of guile. In this he's backed by Dale Arden (the archetypal Working Girl) and Doctor Zarkoff, who provides the obligatory the-Jews-are-the-brains-behind-everything-America-does angle. (To be clear, this is from the European point of view.)

Flash Gordon is basically a one-man American Expeditionary Force, knocking over the evil German/Nazi/Soviet Empire and teaching everyone how to put aside their differences and work together.

Actors Doing Their Part

A lot of critics panned Sam Jones' performance as Flash, but his minimal acting skill actually works in this context. The guy's not a galactic superhero, he's merely the pretty-boy quarterback for the New York Jets, and he's probably taken too many hits to the head.

What makes this work is the stellar supporting cast. This movie enjoys the talents of Brian Blessed, Timothy Dalton and of course Max von Sydow.

Max von Sydow is amazing, but let's give a shout-out to Brian Blessed here for a moment. This is arguably his most famous role. If you know the movie, you know what this clip has him saying:

Timothy Dalton also does great work. Just before this scene starts, there's a rather, erm, suggestive attempt to rouse the beast:

Yeah, so Prince Barin is kind of like a Han Solo who helps Luke only after trying to kill him.

Peter Wyngarde does a brilliant turn as Klytus and the Mongo women are delightfully vampish in their respective ways.

Seriously, Carrie Fisher is cute in a girl-next-door sort of way, but Ornella Muti is in an entirely different league. This contrast highlights a key difference between the two movies.

In Star Wars, Princess Leia dresses in a skimpy bikini because she's captured by the vile gangster Jabba the Hutt.

In Flash Gordon, Princess Aura dresses in a skimpy bikini because she likes it.

I'm sure a number of Morons may need to take a moment, but let's press on.

You can tell that the actors are really enjoying themselves. The lavish sets get chewed on regularly and the costumes are equally over the top. None of the monochrome Imperial look from Star Wars here!

No, the stormtroopers in Mongo wear gold armor:

72. Flash Gordon 03.jpg

Speaking of the sets, the Art Deco vibe is amazing. Everything looks like it was lifted out of the 30s, including the space ships with their greenhouse cockpits and swept wings:
72. Flash Gordon 04.jpg

One other thing that sets this film apart - it's got some rather racy bits to it, completely unlike Star Wars. When Princess Auroa is interrogated, it isn't by a floating beach ball with a syringe - she's held down on a table and flogged by a woman dressed as a dominatrix:

Emperor Ming doesn't just sit around and cackle like the geezer in Star Wars. No, check out his swinging bedchamber complete with gold pillows where he can take "his pleasure."

72. Flash Gordon 05.jpg
Ah, European decadence.

What sets this movie apart is that you can enjoy it both as a popcorn flick, and as social commentary on American-European relationships. Watch it once just to enjoy it, and then watch it again and try to pick out the symbolism. There's a lot there if you pay attention.

I can't conclude this piece without mentioning the amazing title track by QUEEN. You know you've heard it, and it's awesome:

Take a look and watch it with fresh eyes. You'll have to agree it's held up rather well.

It feels off because it is off. It's basically a commie reboot of Churchill's WWII years, trying to make him a commie Hero of the Proletariat. That's why I didn't like DH, despite Oldman's outstanding performance.

22 Paths of Glory is on TCM at 8 Eastern. Kubrick's first great movie, it's directed as tight as drum. Not a wasted second, and it clocks in at 88 minutes.

One of the few effective anti-war movies. It's also the first with a recurring Kubrick theme of asking what makes us human, different than insects and machines,

Great short stories, smoke coming out of the rocket ships, winged men with guns, Flash and Ming. Good stuff.

The movie was good too.

I also remember Sam Jones had nudie pics floating around in Hustler back then in an article about the movie. I think he did a shoot for Playgirl or some such.

Our little town had one theater back in the day, and the weird owner (we called him Lurch), would play pornos on slow nights, Mondays and Tuesdays. Maybe I should drink heavily and give it another shot.

Hell, maybe they were all drunk when they filmed it.

You need to watch it on both levels.

Yes, it's a goofy over-the-top popcorn movie.

But it's also got some rather clever things to say about power politics, particularly how Americans deal with Europe. Mongo is jaded, decadent, twisted and cruel. Flash Gordon is dumb as a rock, but honest to a fault, utterly brave and he believes that good can actually beat evil.

I wasn't kidding when I said there was a deeper way of watching the film. Once you watch it that way, you'll never look at it the same again.

Remember, this is an all-star cast of seasoned actors having the time of their lives. The script is tight, the pace solid, and effects perfect for what they are trying to do.

This isn't one of those movies that is so awful it's good, it's legitimately good on several levels.

79 I remember when I saw Flash Gordon for the first time. It was back at the Lakeside Theater on Veterans. Not the Lakeside Mall theater, but the Lakeside Theater across the street, where they used to have the electric claw machine and the Asteroids game in the lobby. As I was saying, I went to see Flash Gordon with my friend Mitch, who had borrowed his brother's van for the evening. It was a yellow van with brown stripes, and swivel chairs in the back section. His brother worked for a company selling industrial gases but lived at home, so he could afford a van like that. So we went to the Lakeside Theater, which as I said is the one that used to be across the street from the Lakeside Mall, but now I believe there's a Japanese restaurant on the site. Mitch was very careful about parking his brother's van, because his brother had paid a lot of money for the custom paint job -- he could afford it because he worked selling industrial gases, as I mentioned -- and if Mitch got so much as a single scratch on that van he wouldn't be allowed to borrow it again. So he parked at the far end of the parking lot where there wouldn't be so many other cars. It was a long walk across the pavement to the theater. If we'd been at the mall theater across the street we could have parked in the garage, which had an air-conditioned bridge to the cineplex, but the Lakeside Theater just had an open parking lot, and it was pretty warm that summer. Actually, I don't know if it was the heat so much as the humidity. A day can feel intolerably hot if it's humid, but you wouldn't mind the same temperature at all if it was dry. Anyway, as I was saying, Mitch and I had to walk all the way across the parking lot . . .

OM, you're on the mark. Reading the IMdb page for Flash, and the film's own screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr would agree with you:

86 Some folks might consider it a knock-off, but that actually gets the relationship backwards. Star Wars drew its inspiration from the Flash Gordon serials back in the day. In fact, George Lucas reputedly wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie, and only made Star Wars when he couldn't get the rights.

OregonMuse, have you seen Lucas' first major theatrical release, THX-1138?

The creators often have no idea what they were doing. George Lucas clearly hated the final edit of "Star Wars" and his "special edition" showed why he was overruled by the suits.

A lot of movies regarded as great were the result of compromises on the part of the writer or director and while they weren't happy, everyone else was.

The Darkest Hour has Rachael Taylor in it, which means that it can't get less than 3 stars, no matter what.

The alien fighting story is no dumber than all the other alien fighting stories and the effects are decent.

The big problem with this movie is that it's clear Russian propaganda and was released only to help Trump win the 2016 election.

What really made Star Wars was how they just made up the story as they went without ever thinking about what they had already done and went ahead and made the love competition from the original out to be an incest story. That pretty much encapsulates all of what the whole Star Wars series is.

Because it's fun. If you just let it unfold, it's a riot.

If you want to be all serious, study which character represents which country. Is Prince Barin France or the UK? Is Ming more Nazi or Soviet? There's also some subtle relationship things going on, such as Klytus dating General Kala while openly lusting after Princess Aura.

You can enjoy it on the surface and a lot of people do, but I feel you need to look a little deeper to get the most out of it. There's actually a lot going on, but most people miss it on the first viewing.

I've watched this thing at least 30 times, probably more. Like "Casablanca," it never grows stale and I try to keep myself from watching it too often, otherwise it gets stale.

156 Over 100 comments, so I wanted to recommend ONLY THE BRAVE.

I hadn't even heard of this movie until the night I saw it, earlier this week. It's about a "hotshots" wildfire firefighting crew from Prescott AZ who became the first non-federal hotshots-certified team. Josh Brolin, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller.

It's chock full of what SJWs would call toxic masculinity. Hardworking men dedicating themselves to extremely dangerous work, their lives depend on each other, and through all of that they still do funny sh*t to each other, practical jokes etc. And that makes it pretty darn good.

Top notch typical Hollywood moviemaking proficiency without any progressive virtue-signalling that I could discern. The last couple scenes left dust in my eyes. Amazing how a well-crafted film can play with your emotions.

With the news of the CA wildfires, having seen this movie version of the sort of work wildfire-fighters do, gives me deep respect for the ones fighting the fires in CA.

162 What really made Star Wars was how they just made up the story as they went without ever thinking about what they had already done and went ahead and made the love competition from the original out to be an incest story. That pretty much encapsulates all of what the whole Star Wars series is.

It's more than that, though. The scene with Jabba completely undercuts the subsequent reveal of the Falcon. It's also utterly unneeded, useless clutter.

The prequels showed how awful Lucas was once he had total creative control.

Basically, the whole "auteur" model of movie-making resulted in a lot of crap. The studio system produced a far better product with a lot less sanctimony.

186 Speaking of the enlightened Europe v. simpleton U.S., consider Kingsman, The Golden Circle. Kingsman is wiped out but for Merlin and Eggsy (and later a revivified Harry) and must rely on their American cousins' organization, Statesman, a distillery rather than a classy cover like a tailor shop. Then (SPOILER ALERT!) the yank hero (and the US President) betray them in favor of simple revenge rather than truth, justice and the British way. (OK, the villain's evil plan to kill all the drug addict parasites didn't seem all that evil to me so maybe they got that right.) Then after the Brits (including Elton John) save the world, the Brits go back to civilization and rebuild their shop.

Posted by: Hands at July 28, 2018 08:28 PM (EzdLW)

201 TJM, believe it or not Cimino had made a hit film *before* The Deer Hunter:

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.

AND, he made himself a good reputation because, according to legend, Clint Eastwood once asked Cimino, 'how many more weeks we have to shoot?'

Cimino replied, 'about three.'

Then Clint said "Well if we're not done in three days, you're up shit creek. I'm not sticking around."

So Cimino, again according to legend, managed to pack three weeks' of work into three days. AND when the movie came out, critics not only didn't notice, but they actually liked it.

So that all went straight to Cimino's head for his next "big serious" flick... which was, of course, The Deer Hunter.

There's also tons of great stuff in Final Cut about how he actually kidnapped the original negative and held it hostage from EMI Films and Universal, threatening to disappear with it all forever if he didn't get to release whatever edit he wanted.

203 And, another thought in auteur:

It originated from observations by French film critics in the 50s based on what they observed was the most common denominator of good films. John Ford in particular was the model they used.

Just because Ford worked in the studio system doesn't mean that he wouldn't quality as auteur in the model.

Hey there! Thanks again for the opportunity to usurp your thread. :-)

I have to disagree with your assessment. The "auteur" thing is mostly a myth. Most auteur films are terrible. The ones that aren't were saved by studios stepping on the director - who never ceased bitching about it.

Coppola did The Godfather but Apocalypse Now almost killed its lead actor. I think SNL did a skit about Coppola being Kurz, hunkered down in the jungle wasting money.

The more control these guys get, the worse the product becomes. You can't compare Spielberg's current stuff with what he turned out under pressure back in the day.

214 Primordial, one of the major problems with Heaven's Gate was that United Artists was desperate to make a big, huge, splashy, epic hit. Something that would pack in the audience members AND get a ton of love at Oscar time.

Literally only weeks after UA hired Cimino to start shooting HG, he was behaving like a screaming crazy drama queen. One of his tricks was to invite bigwigs to the set, let them order him to do whatever, and then file restraining orders against them two minutes after they left.

Wanna hear my theory? I think the "aliens" are humans from the future. Think about it - they haven't stolen many resources, but they have collected great works of art and are rounding up healthy humans.

I think they are weak from genetic tampering or disease and need older, healthier, uncorrupted samples.

229 I just learned that USA cancelled Colony!

The last episode of Season 3 was a cliffhanger of epic proportions.

I guess the ratings weren't good enough to justify what must be an expensive series to make. But I wonder if the Nielsens (do they still use that system?) count DVR'd viewings. I almost never watch shows live anymore.
Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes at July 28, 2018 08:24 PM (gUCYC)

That sucks with shows these days are cliffhangers. Maybe Netflix or Amazon or somebody will pick it up to finish the story. I'll still watch it.
But all stories should have a beginning and an end. 12 Monkeys theme.

I swear most fun watching a show or movie I've had since I was a child. No degeneracy. No gratuitous sex. Good characters are good and bad ars bad. Honor, duty, brotherhood, righteousness, and love are themes. Oh, best ending since Breaking Bad. The last season was a dusty time period in my living room. Each season ends well. It has everything, literally everything. You will not believe it's a SYFY production.
SYFY Sid something cool with the last season because the writers wanted a great ensding. Over 4 weeks they aired 3 episodes a week for 3 weeks and the 4th week a 90 minute finale, which made my living room very dusty again.

I've been talking about it to my parents, siblings, and friends about it telling them to dig in now. I warn them about the dust

Enjoy the show when you can.

Available on DVD as a box set. Worth it. The downside of the dvd's is that they don't have the episodes self contained as broadcast, like the vhs versions (no credits/title opener for every episode) and just splice all of them together in a sort of "movie" format.

- Ahlgren was American, should have been French or Prussian

...that's about all that comes to mind right away. I didn't think it was all that bad, by itself or for historicity. I mean, the emperor really did bring in Western advisors and there really was a Satsuma rebellion that ended the samurai as a caste.

294 Hmmm... from wikipedia

Since 2015, a new Flash Gordon film has been in the works.[43] 20th Century Fox hired JD Payne and Patrick McKay as screenwriters, while Matthew Vaughn was in talks to direct.[44] On 15 January 2016, Mark Protosevich was hired to rewrite the film's script.[45]

Can't find anything recent. I'm assuming it has stalled, which is probably a good thing.

Point of order: Cruise loses the battle, as do the samurai he rides with. It is the hopeless sacrifice of the samurai that he brings in a tale to the Emperor, and merely handing over Katsumoto's sword is the impetus for the plot's final resolution.

There is grim hilarity to the idea this moment caused tremendous anguish for all non-Japanese during WWII, but then that is not why I rented the DVD.

310 I recently discovered a low-budget Wes Craven that I missed during the 80s: 'Deadly Friend'. This movie was ... really good. I was pleasantly surprised. It's a take on the Frankenstein legend (or maybe Bride Of-, or - especially - Robocop).

A young starcrossed 1980s couple ends before it gets a chance to take off, because the girl's abusive dad knocks her down the stairs. She's brain dead for awhile and, in fact, deprived of oxygen for awhile when her lovelorn suitor gets to her.

The boy in question is a robotics nerd, and had been building a self-teaching robot. That robot gets shot by another mutual neighbour.

The nerd puts the microchip from the one into the necrotic brain of the other, and... well... creates a monster. It/she knows they love the nerd. It/she also hates being undead, and is out for revenge from the two people who killed it and her two halves. It/she doesn't know much else, but is learning.

Very tragic as well as horrific. This is what I wanted from Murphy's arc in Robocop 1-2 but didn't get because @#$% Verhoeven.

True Grit. The Manchurian Candidate. The Force Awakens, if you want to
get snarky... all remade movies with the potential for greatness, that
end up falling flat on their face. Special effects carry movies further
than ever, but the deeper themes and characters have gone to shit. Which
is why even obviously dumb movies like Flash Gordon will still be
influential and compelling long after The Last Jedi has faded into
oblivion.

Hey, Flash Gordon isn't "obviously dumb." I know reading the post is optional around here, but I think I made a strong case that there's a lot going on beneath the surface.

The big difference between 1980 and today is that special effects back then could only go so far. Spaceships and explosions still needed something to give them meaning. Movies today are little more than CGI demo reels.

Look, if you think Flash Gordon is terrible, fine. You can at least enjoy the spectacle of some truly gifted actors slumming it while chewing on the scenery. Max von Sydow is having a great time. Brian Blessed is a hoot. Everyone is having a great time, and that counts for a lot.

That's why I think this movie doesn't get the love it deserves. The actors may have been phoning it in, but they were still damn good at what they did. Actors today, not so much.

Jesus, even the difference between Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom. The former was hardly genius in the eay of the original, but it was fun, coherent, and something everyone could enjoy. Fallen Kingdom may as well have put the paleo-veterinarian in a Hillary 2016 T-shirt, which would be forgivable except for the fact she's a grotesque retard who should have been tortured to death five times over by the Trump-voting pale male mercenaries she keeps mindlessly antagonizing.

I can handle some assumed idiocy in Jurassic Park movies, a beautiful park where everything operates perfectly forever is -less- exciting, though still goddamn awesome. If your plot is only possible when everyone acts like a bellend? Yeah, call me when Cunty McSmartgirl is eaten feet first by an Indoraptor and I might contemplate handing over 9 dollars.

I call B.S. on this.

The Scots fought like lions in both the world wars. Then Labour turned them into a bunch of dependent pussies.

The Welsh also get a ton of welfare, but they still managed to keep their self-respect. Scotland got something close to 'home rule' and they used it to go all-in on PC crap.

And now they're imposing "booze control" to keep themselves from getting blitzed all the time.

420 Multi-mini-Review Time!

I was on vacay so had peee-lenty of time to watch flicks during the flights.

"Pacific Rim: Uprising" - Big, dumb, loud and violent. Just what you want in a Kaiju movie. Tho not exactly a kanji movie. A bit too talking at first but soon the BDLV kicks in and it's a lot of fun. You won't be bored. Don't miss Charley Day's one chance to play a villain!!!

"Hostiles" - Alllllllmost a great movie as it seems balanced at first, but then comes the backend loading of eeeeeeevil white men. And a character change that's not earned. Goodish but not great.
Christian Bale is excellent.

"I, Tonya" - great deal of fun. Excellent funny Rashomon-ish I-am-what-I-am take on Tonya Harding. Go see now.

"Red Sparrow" - don't get the hate for this one. It's great. A hard edged look at the reality of honey trap spying. TheState owns our heroine's body. She tries to hold on to her mind and soul.
Nicely done. Too bad the box office guarantees no sequel.

"The Third Murder" - one of my favorite Japanese director's Hirokusa Koreeda's big flop. Not a very good movie, It's mostly broken by an unearned character change. Great acting. Great directing. Lousy script. Too bad.

From what I saw, it was not anti-Christian so much as anti-Dubya's universalist vision of Christianity. The Moslems in it are nemesis: they exist with their own chivalric code, but ultimately they don't drive the plot as Muslims. They drive the plot as natives to the Near East which Bush's army I mean, the Crusaders are not.

500 Definitely intrigued. Her diva schtick is weird, but I also think it's partly to keep herself grounded in a way, not unlike Alice Cooper. Like Alice, she may purposely compartmentalize things to remain sane.

And I have heard her sing real songs. She has a beautiful voice.

Posted by: Pug Mahon, Not Really Here

I've read up on her a bit. She was relentlessly mocked as an artistic kid for being different and I think she took the insults to heart. I think the makeup and gaudy outfits are part of the armor she wears that enables her to get up on stage and perform. I think she has always had fairly low self esteem and has to fight to get herself out on stage.

Which is all very intriguing because in this movie she is showing the world her real face for the first time.

I am not into pop music and culture at all but I can appreciate the apparent psychology and backstory behind the artists. And of coursr Bradley Cooper gets up and actually sings.

506 Sorry I missed the Flash Gordon post I have been begging for.

1) FG is Scott fantasy, more akin to Wizard of Oz instead of Star Wars. In fact there are several homages to the Wizard of Oz in the movie. They make it to Mongo via the Imperial Vortex like Dorothy and the tornado. Dale is can't turn over the hourglass, etc.

2) The representation of Mongo as a technological, decadent fascist society is excellent and beats any political background in Star Wars.

3) Ornella Muti smokes the screen unlike any other woman.

To bad I so late, Flash Gordon is so layered, repeated viewings never disappoints.

509 I'm watching the Flash Gordon series from the late 30's and 40's with Buster Crabbe (MY Fav Flash). Your commentary is wise, discerning and beyond my two brains cells comprehension. "Star Wars has been going down hill since Episode 4" - John Milner Am Graf. Flash is exhilarating in its naviete. Even Ming has a "light side" to contrast his on screen persona as "the evil lord" No character development like SW. He's just BAD. BAD to the BONE, Jack! Queens music track speaks for itself. Invasive covert pulse and blood pressure droid activated. If you can't dig it you should check your pulse, you may have exceeded your due date. SO 25 words or less based on neatness, originality and aptness of thought? Flash would kick Solo, Anakin, and Darth TO THE CURB. He'd chug jagger shots with Luke and Yoda. He will to raise the purified light yeah, there upon unto the 13th Aethyr. OH YEAH !!! BUT He'd save the "Purple Death" bong rips for the three way with Dale and Zarkoff. JUST SAYIN' Just Sayin' Nuff Said.
