Former Clinton Pollster Mark Penn: To Save the Republic, Robert Mueller and the Deep State Must be Stopped and Defeated

A sensible opinion, coming from a completely unexpected speaker.

The "deep state" is in a deep state of desperation. With little time left before the Justice Department inspector general's report becomes public, and with special counsel Robert Mueller having failed to bring down Donald Trump after a year of trying, they know a reckoning is coming.

At this point, there is little doubt that the highest echelons of the FBI and the Justice Department broke their own rules to end the Hillary Clinton "matter," but we can expect the inspector general to document what was done or, more pointedly, not done. It is hard to see how a yearlong investigation of this won't come down hard on former FBI Director James Comey and perhaps even former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who definitely wasn't playing mahjong in a secret "no aides allowed" meeting with former President Clinton on a Phoenix airport tarmac.

No seriously, this is coming from Bill Clinton's former pollster.

With this report on the way and congressional investigators beginning to zero in on the lack of hard, verified evidence for starting the Trump probe, current and former intelligence and Justice Department officials are dumping everything they can think of to save their reputations.

But it is backfiring. They started by telling the story of Alexander Downer, an Australian diplomat, as having remembered a bar conversation with George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign. But how did the FBI know they should talk to him? That's left out of their narrative. Downer's signature appears on a $25 million contribution to the Clinton Foundation. You don't need much imagination to figure that he was close with Clinton Foundation operatives who relayed information to the State Department, which then called the FBI to complete the loop. This wasn't intelligence. It was likely opposition research from the start.

Note that Bill Clinton's former pollster is more skeptical of the Deep State's current story than alleged Bad Boy of Conservatism Ben Shapiro.

In no way would a fourth-hand report from a Maltese professor justify wholesale targeting of four or five members of the Trump campaign. It took Christopher Steele, with his funding concealed through false campaign filings, to be incredibly successful at creating a vast echo chamber around his unverified, fanciful dossier, bouncing it back and forth between the press and the FBI so it appeared that there were multiple sources all coming to the same conclusion.

Time and time again, investigators came up empty. Even several sting operations with an FBI spy we just learned about failed to produce a DeLorean-like video with cash on the table. But rather than close the probe, the deep state just expanded it. All they had were a few isolated contacts with Russians and absolutely nothing related to Trump himself, yet they pressed forward. Egged on by Steele, they simply believed Trump and his team must be dirty. They just needed to dig deep enough.

Mark Penn concludes that stopping Mueller isn't about party or politics or any particular president, but necessary to preserve the normal functioning of democracy itself.

Obviously, worth the read.

Richard Fernandez has previously written that we are now experiencing what we had long avoided in America -- a deadly fight of a King vs. another King (the current president versus the Deep State embeds of the previous president), and that this fight may change America forever.

He now elaborates on that idea, as he watches two scorpions with a death-grip on each other trying to kill each other before the other kills first.

The Deep State understands that either they must find some claim that Trump is a criminal, or else they'll be prosecuted for their own rampant criminal acts.

The invaluable timeline of the investigations compiled by Sharyl Attkisson seems to confirm what Lee Smith of Tablet Magazine has already suggested: that the roots of domestic spying predated the Trump candidacy. He notes that "Obama officials vastly expand[ed] their searches through NSA database for Americans and the content of their communications. In 2013, there were 9,600 searches involving 195 Americans. But in 2016, there are 30,355 searches of 5,288 Americans."

...

On January 20, 2017, "Fifteen minutes after Trump becomes president, former National Security Adviser Susan Rice emails memo to herself purporting to summarize the Jan. 5 Oval Office meeting with President Obama and other top officials. She states that Obama instructed the group to investigate 'by the book' and asked them to be mindful whether there were certain things that “could not be fully shared with the incoming administration."

In response to Trump's demand, Rod Rosenstein has asked the DOJ inspector general to review the possible infiltration of the Trump campaign. The hunters have themselves become the hunted. For better or worse, two major American political factions are trying to jail each other. The outcome of their struggle may determine not only who occupies the White House, but what future role the intelligence agencies play in public life.

The specifics of the individual accusations may be fake, but the struggle over the control of the bureaucracy is frighteningly real. Concern over the independence of powerful bureaucracies has long been paramount for a reason. The biggest problem with weaponizing intelligence agencies is it CREATES a pathway for the foreign takeover of the system. If a once hostile power takes over the White House and that president corrupts the agencies, an unfettered secret police will have the ability to remain in power indefinitely.

That seems to have been Obama's plan all along.

28 If the GOP hangs on to the House and Senate this year, and Trump wins in 2020, the fight might end up simply going on for too long in general.

The public won't care anymore, but they'll keep giving Trump and his party power, which will enable them to take greater hits on the deep state the longer it goes on.

If Trump wins in 2020, he could put forward some really strong civil service reform that pisses off a lot of the federal bureaucracy, and the public won't care anymore about their whining.

If the deep state doesn't win soon, it's pretty much destined to have a lot of its power strangled and potentially even some of his highest members cast out of power. Hell, we may be past that, if Rassamussen's reading of Trump's popularity is even remotely correct.

And this, rightfully, is what Trump is likely after. So long as our Congress and courts are ruled by mountains of secret dirt and threats of career-ending leaks run DC, the people will never have the Representative Republic that we have naively presumed to have enjoyed.

At the end of this, perhaps major IC reforms are on the horizon.

60 I have thought for many months now that this isn't (just) a pansy-ass coup attempt against a properly elected president. This is an all-out death struggle. We have a problem in that in one body we have both a republic and a basically-autonomous bureaucracy that plays by its own (often extra-constitutional) rules and towards its own ends. When this is over, one will have the upper hand over the other.

For some time, the autonomous bureaucracy (the deep state) has had quorum power. The republic is trying to take it back. Best case, the quorum power moves back to the republic and the deep state is lessened. Worst case, the republic is defeated and the deep state ascends permanently.

I try not to be hyperbolic in everyday life, but I suspect this might be for all the marbles.

Wonder how Obama and Jarrett are now feeling about their decision to set up shop - their shadow government - in Kalorama? Might have been wise to be farther than miles from the WH.

No one, and no one will be. What happened in the USSR will not happen here. The deep state is a cabal without a real head (or a hydra, if that is a better analogy). Can't cut the head off and shut it down like you can with an entire outgoing government *system* like the USSR. You can just try to strike as many nerve centers as possible and hope to kill off enough of the body that the republic can recover.

If there is any luck on our side, there will be many mini-Gorbies.

They tried to say that was AmeriCorps or some such. But an internal shadow-FBI/CIA is more fitting, and more like what we have. Funded by some oligarchs with their own private armies. With some general fund that can send billions (that we know of) to Iran in secret, that can run a ClintonFoundation that is not really a charity and never gets audited, but keeps collecting.

The coup has been ongoing and is still going. But it is not two kings fighting, it is one duly elected POTUS (and we the people) versus shadow oligarchs and globalists running a crime syndicate, even though they have noble sounding goals, I'm sure (if we ever got to see the minutes from the secret banker meetings where Hillary discusses the open hemisphere.

137 Washington DC's Praetorian Guard.

The Praetorian Legion chose the Roman Emperor. Soon, the possible Emperor candidates would offer minor inducements to curry favor, like more pay (1.5X, based on the "fact" that living in the capital city was so expensive). Soon it became outright bribery and theft with the chosen emperor giving the ten times their annual pay and more.

One Emperor refused to go along. He was promptly assassinated.

The Praetorian Guard chose the Roman Emperor based on what he could do for the Guard, not what he could do for the Roman Citizens.

147 Good morning. Had a little blood-pressure-related adventure this morning... anyway, they gave me some medicine, discharged me, I fell asleep, and here I am at 3PM Central...

This would explain why the OPM database was handed over to China and the CIA didn't scream bloody murder. It's amazing how noone even seems to remember it happened, and it was a far far worse situation than "OMG, the SMR just shitposted to facebook."

148 This got Willowed from previous thread. And should I clean it up and publish it?

You see that misshapened girl there? The one hanging back lost in the crowd but still gawking at getting this close to her DNC gods? Believe it or not sleepers, she'll soon be one of those gods. But not in any usual way, no sirree bob.

Her name is Philadelphia Burke and Hillary is her hero and goddess all rolled into one. Can you grok that you zombie? She will soon enough because here come the two dark clothed men sporting the black sunglasses. The sound of her body hitting pavement is lost amid the cheers as one man holsters his TASER and nods.

Her lumpy limp form is hustled by those imposing men down the alley she'd been in and then tossed into a van like so much dead meat. But no she still lives as she bleats like a stuck cow in shock. The side door slams closed and she rolls on the floor as the vehicle accelerates.

Now here is where it gets weird you dead heads. She finally croaks out a word between twisted teeth and cleft lip but she can't move as Philadelphia discovers her hands are tied. "What?"

A woman enters her view with a not so charming smile plastered on a gorgeous plastic face. "How would you like to meet your goddess?"

Hog-tied and croggled, Philadelphia blinks in confusion as another "What" escapes her constricted throat. The false smile never falters but something in the eyes changes of the artificial woman even as a hand lifts up Philadelphia's chin.

"Oh we know all about your social feeds. And you Philadelphia Burke. Everything. We're going to do you a big favor, give your life a major upgrade where you can meet those you adore.. Does that sound good?"

"I guess."

The hand is stronger than it would seem and Philadelphia feels her hefty body being pulled toward the scary strange woman. "I'll ask again. Do you want a better life?"

Her chin is starting to hurt along with a back protesting at being held at such an odd angle, it hurts so much it makes Philadelphia's eyes water. Just to stop the pain she nods and whispers. "Yes."

Now ghouls listen close as we get to the really weird part of this story. Hang on with those talons as we veer far off course and miss the Twilight Zone.

The hand releases Philadelphia and the young girl falls to the van's floor with a thump which makes her body jiggle even more than the van's movements had caused. But it is a blessed relief not to be held like that. She finally regains her wits and breath to look up. "What now?"

Philadelphia blanches as the smile is no longer pretending to be nice, it is she decides a cold triumphant smile. That she has lost some kind of game and has no idea what it is.

The woman in what is obviously an expensive business suit merely waves a hand in dismissal. "Nothing to worry about. Just some minor hardware upgrades for you since you have a new job."

Philadelphia blinks in confusion, what new job. No one wants to hire her with all of her problems. "New job?"

The woman takes a sip from a glass and now gives Philadelphia a calculating look. "We are going to see what kind of actress you are besides all those MMORPGs that you are fond of."

"Actress?"

"Oh yes my little pet project. When I get through with you, you will be the perfect waldo controller for Hillary."

Told all you vampires it was weird.

Guys. Lets not be spiking the ball just yet.

One of Two things have to happen before the "criminality" of what happened gets any traction.

1. The Press needs to be leading the charge. And that NEVER happens against Democrats.... and certainly is not happening while Trump is President.

2. An insider.... somebody involved, has to spill the beans. "Yes, Senator. We were ordered to do the Code Red. And We were ordered by ." And.... they cant be minor beans. They have to be felony sedition beans.

I don't think he's malleable, frankly. I expect that over his long career, and in view of his great wealth, that LOTS of people have tried to schmooze him. So I bet he's pretty impervious to such blandishments.

For these reasons, I doubt that the left shoved him to the right, or that the left could have co-opted him. I think The Donald knows his own mind pretty well, and will do whatever he thinks ought to be done.

Recall that all the "experts" wrote him off before the election because he was doing everything all wrong by their lights. Most likely many of his advisors shared that opinion. But, to coin a phrase, he persevered.

In a less sanguine take, someone with as much ego as Trump is unlikely to follow - or be influenced by - much of anyone, under any circumstances.

The party is merely the vehicle by which policy is advanced via elections.

Unless and until Mark Penn and his ilk admit that their belief in government as the answer to all our problems is a lie, then all of this is moot.

Same goes for Dershowitz, et al. And the answer is NOT the GOP.

The answer is ordered liberty and respecting the nation as founded. If we share at least that much in common, then we can work out the rest, to greater or lesser degrees of satisfaction.

At first I thought Trump ran for the Presidency as a bit of an ego thing, then I thought is was just that he loved his country the old fashioned way and couldn't stand to see d-bags in charge any more.

The as he assumed the helm, it became clear he was not shocked or ill prepared for the storm that was thrust upon him. I am starting to think that he has a much deeper insight that nearly everyone gives him credit. That's why I was bringing up the Churchill thing. The right man for the right time, but not necessarily for all times. But the times we are in are the times we need a Trump like character.

I know it is hard to remember, but we were still constitutionally solid then. I do believe the rot began during that administration, but there were still sane people in the Dem party.

Yes, we disagreed, but we still agreed on the Constitution. That is why things are entirely different now...we no longer all agree on the Constitution. Old time Dems don't recognize their party either.

I keep reaching for terms to better explain the divide. Starting to settle on the Resistance (Leftist media, anti-fa, marxists, Celebs, tech leaders, nevertrumpers, deep state, et.al) as one side. The other side would be....unsure. Constitutionalists? I haven't figured that one out yet.

But the Resistance are those who seem to have decided against our Constitution. Our rule of law. Our electorlal college. Our election result. Our amendments. Capitalism. All those things. It crosses party lines.

Then there is "our side" which also crosses party lines. The Resistance named itself. They are proud of it. Haven't figured a name yet for our side ...yet.

Those are more accurate about our current battle for the soul of our nation, IMO.

280 (1/3) There are at least 2 possible scenarios: #1 In 2016, before anybody thought @realDonaldTrump would win, the FBI correctly anticipated the Trump campaign would be uniquely targeted by Russia & devoted extraordinary efforts to investigating it.(cont.)
+++++
(2/3) including placing at least one spy/informant close to Trump campaign & wiretapping or surveilling at least seven Trump associates-- all while President Obama denied such election interference was possibl-- and yet in the end.
+++++
(3/3).the FBI was still incompetent at preventing the Russian interference they'd investigated all year, and then found no grounds to open an investigation into realDonaldTrump until after he fired FBI Director Comey. Or #2 The govt spied on Trump for political purposes.

The famous Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale attempted to infiltrate the Clinton Foundation in the early 21st century following the Fall of Communism. Not really. I've actually been following this whole thing very closely for well over a year now. Once a few of the early dominos fell it was just a matter of time.

I'd say it's more apt to say that people here have been on the whole way too negative in the face of clear evidence that things were indeed going our way and "happening".

Besides, if you count draining the swamp as part of success it was been an enormous success so far. It may not seem a big deal to some but taking down over a dozen senior people in the DOJ/FBI is in fact a very big deal.

We Americans venerate Lincoln, but to play devil's advocate, consider 1) he was not well-regarded in his time, not even by his Cabinet, 2) he had the Civil War thrust upon him, and so had no choice, 3) his management of the Civil War was dismal, much worse than W's management of the Iraq War, 4) he looked on course to lose the election of 1864 until Sherman took Atlanta, and 5) he had absolutely zero impact on world affairs.

I'm not dumping on him, but putting him into perspective. His fame largely arose after his assassination, much like the case of JFK.

Navarro ran for office in San Diego, California three times as a Democrat. In 1992, he ran for mayor as an independent, finishing first (38.2%) in the all-party primary, but losing (48.0%) to Republican Susan Golding in the runoff.[25] During his mayoral campaign, Navarro ran on a no-growth platform.[26] In 1996, he ran for the 49th Congressional District as the Democratic Party nominee (41.9%), but lost to Republican Brian Bilbray (52.7%).[27] In 2001, Navarro ran in a special election to fill the District 6 San Diego city council seat, but lost in the primary.[28]
