"How FaceBook Went From Being an 'Ideal Way' To Reach Voters to Being 'Weaponized'
(Hint: A Republican Won)"

Great headline from Elizabeth Harrington on how the narrative of 2012 -- that Obama deployed his smart, urban techsperts to mine FaceBook for personal information to microtarget voters (and how this was Good and Very Very Clever) went to being the "weaponization" of FaceBook when Cambridge Analytica did the same thing.

Imagine a political campaign using social media to learn your spending habits, look at your web browsing history, get your cell phone number, and ultimately knock on your door. What if that campaign used a third party app to trick their supporters into giving you the keys to everything about them and, in turn, millions of their friends?

What would the media say?

Naturally the team behind it would be the "geek squad." The campaign would be celebrated for its "Big Data Brains." The media would applaud these "digital wizards" at the "forefront of campaign technology."

That, of course, was the praise heaped on Barack Obama's 2012 reelection campaign. It wasn't nefarious for Obama to have the head of Google recruiting talent, choosing technology, and coaching Obama's campaign manager. Nor for Facebook to be on their "side."

But when a consulting firm—not even the Trump campaign itself—does essentially the same thing, and a Republican wins the White House? "Launch a criminal investigation!" "Mark Zuckerberg must testify!" "Regulate social media!" "Delete your Facebook!"

That text is loaded with links to the quotations in the original, but you'll have to hit the link for that.

She contrasts with the new language about Cambridge Analytica doing exactly what Obama's data-miners did, only a smaller scale, and oh boy, let me issue this necessary WHIPLASH WARNING.

More from Stephen Green here, reporting on Mark Zuckerberg's modified limited hang-out. He admits that Cambridge Analytica data-mined, and talks about how he stopped that (in 2014!).

But he fails to mention he permitted Barack Obama to do the same in 2012.

And that's not me saying that-- that's an Obama campaign director for online campaigning saying that.

A former Obama campaign official is claiming that Facebook knowingly allowed them to mine massive amounts of Facebook data -- more than they would’ve allowed someone else to do --because they were supportive of the campaign.

In a Sunday tweet thread, Carol Davidsen, former director of integration and media analytics for Obama for America, said the 2012 campaign led Facebook to "suck out the whole social graph" and target potential voters. They would then use that data to do things like append their email lists.

...

When Facebook found out what they were doing, they were "surprised," she said. But she also claimed they didn’t stop them once they found out...

Tweets taken from IJR's pointer:

Another article I read reported that FaceBook permitted Obama to keep "sucking up the social graph" of all FaceBook users -- but asked them to stop after the election.

And so, what once was cool and hip and smart and completely, totally good and right now becomes criminal and Russian collusion when a firm hired by a Republican does it.

Because to the Left being a Republican should be illegal and until it is de jure, those on the Left will merely treat it as such de facto.

There's a part of me that appreciates that this belief is becoming more openly stated rather than just heavily implied as has been for decades. So that's nice.

Citigroup has announced it will no longer process payments for gun sales to those under 21 years old nor for large capacity magazines.and not just processing payments, they will no longer do business with any company that sells high capacity magazines. So basically Citi will no longer accept business from any gun store since every gun store sells high capacitu magazines. At least outaide of CA and NY.

There was an oped in NYT urging financial companies to do this less than a month ago. And if Citi is doing it, the rest will announce it soon enough.

It is not just the data, but the psychology that can use that data to influence the way you think.

Certain words have power and can influence the way you think about things. Look at the 'Great Speeches' by World Leaders who have inspired entire countries

That is what politics is all about; motivating people to give you their loyalty. This is nothing more than democrats trying to criminalize republicans and at the same time decriminalize democrat behavior.

91 Anyone who has worked close to a campaign knows that political parties have been hoovering up data and targeting of voters since millennials began recording history (about 20-30 years).

The only things that have changed are the processing and storage abilities of computer, which makes this possible on a massive and cost-effective scale, and people are stupid enough to give some corp or government the keys to their digital lives.

Facebook took something like $80+ million from the campaigns for targeted ads, and they were oh so willing to tell people (Trump's guys) how to use Facebook as long as the checks kept clearing.

100 Behavioral targeting, which is the term for what many are describing here, is not in itself a bad thing. You go online to look at shoes, and then ads for shoes follow you around the web for a while. Companies pay big money for this type of advertising and it's fairly effective.

By itself, behavioral targeting is relatively harmless. All that's involved is gathering your browsing history, IE you do alot of searches for shoes, ergo my shoe ad sees you as a good candidate for my shoe company's products and pops up on your screen. This kind of app is not taking pics of your house, or recording your SS# and blood type or anything.

It's a bit spooky but it's not really all that threatening.

Software that gathers up people's vital personal information, names, addresses, CC numbers, SS numbers, etc. is a different animal.

Eh, a little bit of a stretch, but sure.

Maybe a better analogy would be like a trade magazine -- Wine Growers Monthly or something like that. Advertisers pay extra if they have a good idea of who their eyeballs belong to and what their interests are.

Facebook and google have taken it much farther then you ever could in print though. Which is why they can offer you such great services for free -- the service is besides the point, they just want people handing over information to them so that they can build a profile on you then sell that information to marketers.

About that. I am fairly rabid about keeping information about me offline. I don't use Facebook and I more or less do not ever allow people to take pictures of me and those who do take pictures of me know that under no circumstances are those pictures to go online.

A couple of years ago, Mommy posted a family Christmas portrait to Facebook and there's no way I was going to tell Mommy to take it down.

Facebook tagged me in the picture.

There's no way Facebook should have had any information to do that. There shouldn't have been any data for the facial recognition software to use.

And yet there it was.

So that was creepy.

Television never allowed anyone to have any personal information about you. The Neilsen ratings weren't such accurate measures of even the more general traits of various television audiences.

The same with magazines, unless you had a subscription, and then the only personal information you gave them was your name, address and the type of magazine.

Sure, those industries all survived on ad dollars but they were, essentially, blind ads.

169 There was a time, not too long ago, when Facebook could have counted on a certain amount of Republican support for being allowed to conduct their business as they see fit. But they decided to cast their lot with the Democrats and the hard Left, and they alienated any Republican or conservative support they may have had.

Now that their new Democrat/AntiFa allies are turning on them, there is nobody on the Right who will stick up for them. The Right just wants them destroyed ASAP. Now the Left agrees. This is a bed of their own making.

How is it that these corporate titans, the smartest people ever, couldn't figure out that eventually their Socialist buddies would turn on them. Did they really think the scorpion would never sting?

For really bright guys, they're pretty darn stupid.

The whole thing is a predictable as a sunrise.

The sad reality is that if a friend tags you on a photo, even a photo you have no idea exists, your face is now in the database. If you also have an account on either Facebook or Snapchat, the company can (but presently chooses not to) auto-tag you on every other picture in which you appear that is in their database.

Apple claims they do not store faces in their database and that the facial recognition product they use for ID purposes is local to the phone but that is nothing more than a current policy, and policies can change.

To be fair to Mommy, it was a cute picture of all of us. There's a picture in that set that is of me and my brother standing back to back and looking over our shoulders at each other. The photographer said when she took it that this was usually something she did for younger kids but she just had to do it for us.

My brother is 6'4".

It is a very amusing picture indeed.

It's not just online, but all over the place. Lots and lots of companies make money on the side (and more) from putting together and selling lists with important information. Every time you give out a phone number to get a card for discounts at the drug store or supermarket that goes out on a list that is sold to umpteen different entities.

Pretty much every time you do something with your name all the information in that transaction is bundled and put on a list for sale. Even many of the DMVs are selling lists - I believe I read that in an article a few years ago.

There go a billion mass marketing business models.

Make it to where you have to pay the person for their info and only you can use it, you can't sell it.

The person retains ownership rights. You are contractually just using their info for an agreed amount of time.

Send all you want. I'll totally get right to them.

I have big problems with that.

People are adults and need to understand, and be responsible for, the information they are giving away and to whom.

There are certain times when it is understood that that information is private - used to be with your doctor, but BarkyCare pretty much did away with that - and that is one thing, but the rest of the info is being offered for the use of the company. Don't like it, don't do business with that company or don't apply for whatever it is that they want in order to make you spit up lots of info.

That's why I like to pay cash for most things. If I see something on Amazon but can get it at one of the 47 Walmarts around me then I'll run to the Walmart and pay for it in cash. Walmart tries to force you to order stuff from them online (even to just hand it to you at the same store it was stocked in, as "delivered") but I just go to the store and demand the price I saw on the web site (which seems to frustrate lots of Walmart employees for some odd reason).

You are responsible for guarding your info. It's places that you have no choice to not deal with that shouldn't be allowed to use and sell any info. But that's about it.

Look, this is war.

If these companies weren't engaging in politics and the culture war, I could look the other way.

But these organizations are basically extensions of the Democrat Party. Their executives were probably in the WH more than Joe Biden.

So if 2-3 companies get burned by some common sense privacy laws, I'm good with that. With a 100,000 pages of business regulation, I can add one more to the stack rather than be ruled by the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and Eric Schmidt.

These various ad schemes aren't 1/100th as effective as claimed. We aren't ruled by Zuckerberg or Schmidt based on data mining for ads. Our society has deeper problems that caused someone like Barky to be elected. No amount of ads make people go that way.

Frankly, I have had more than enough with the mass of bullshit copyright laws and intellectual property crap that we already have. I don't want any more. It's ridiculous enough as it is.

Except both sides didn't use them. Obama's data campaign was light-years ahead of Romney's which it turns out was basically a scam to pocket millions of campaign dollars.

Clinton's was light-years ahead of Obama's according to the Politico article I posted earlier. It really is a must-read, they were already coronating her. I tried to paste some fun snippets but this comment system blows.
