LOL: Olympics Ratings Fall to Fresh Low

And NBC paid so much for the rights.

With a 13.0/22 in metered markets on combined coverage on NBC and NBC Sports Network, the Comcast-owned outlet was far off the podium on the first Thursday of the 2018 Winter Olympics. Not only is this a low for these games, which have slipped and slid repeatedly, but last night's numbers took a face plant from both Sochi 2014 and Vancouver 2010.

If you take the NBC/NBCSN not-so-happy meal of last night and compare it to the February 13 of 2014 first Thursday of Sochi, the 2018 Olympics are down 10% in the early ratings. Four years ago, the Winter Olympics primetime show was only seen on NBC proper, as was the case back in 2010. So, trim it to just NBC’ 18 vs. NBC’14 and you have last night falling 22% from the equivalent night out of Russia and 32% from the Vancouver Winter Olympics eight years ago.

What annoys me about the Olympics (and Super Bowl, and Oscars, etc.) is that it feels to me like people are organizing ways for me to waste my time. Which isn't the worst thing; people do need to waste time occasionally.

But the thing is, the people organizing these things all have intense ill-will against me.

So I'm just happier and happier to opt the hell out of their Happy Time Organized Time-Wasting Let's All Watch TV Together events. I'll waste time in ways that either I've devised or people who don't wish to subjugate me have put together, thank you.

The Corporate Media needs to die.

24 Maybe if it wasn't all gay, all the time, and they actually covered the sports, instead of showcasing the latest in gay fashion and catty snotty commenting on said gay fashion, I might be interested.

How much coverage is devoted to cross country skiing? How about Biathalon? The hockey games are on at impossible times and obscure channels. Would it kill them to show the whole game once in a while?

If I need to watch Johnny Weir's head being consumed by a rabid ferret, I'll call GayTV. Until then.....screw 'em.

32 I've been watching the olympics here and there through the VR app NBC has. It's well done technically and is free of the "Tier 1" broadcasters. It's a much more raw, you-are-there presentation without any of the BS that comes with it. Commercials, political commentary, etc.

If you have any interest, I highly recommend it. It's just the sport, it's presented without editing or interruptions and works real well with my Samsung Gear VR. So the cost isn't too bad.

For those interested in watching any Olympic events, just go to the live feed (they also remain there for a while after, to watch "taped") for it, at nbcolympics - dot - com.

You can mute the commercials, which are infrequent. Depending on the event, you get zero b.s., mostly foreign commentators. I'm sure figure skating is hopeless, and snow-boarding too (though you'll get more dumb surfer dude talk in that one), but events that lack mass market appeal are fine.

Also generally no obsessive focus on Americans, which much improves things, as in many events Americans are non-factors.

And ace, you're a funny guy, but I'm afraid you're simply not going to be able to match the thing about the "first openly gay figure skater". It's the platonic ideal of idiotic irony and failed moral preening, so nothing can be added.

196 Seriously, there are only two reasons to watch the Olympics:

1. Nationalistic Pride

2. Sporting Competition at the 'Highest' Level (with the exception of the sports where this isn't true, like ones where the pros don't compete)

Of course, the left has demonized #1. You can be proud of being gay, but don't you dare be proud of being American. So instead of jingoism, it's all human interest pablum. But if people want that, there's any number of other ways to ingest that kind of drivel.

As to the #2, sure, it's high level competition, but mostly in sports people aren't all that interested in.

But the coverage, ye gods, the coverage. Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir are insane. Nuts. Bizarre. It is like watching a scene from the Hunger Games, where they go to central city. Every word out of their mouths is off-putting. Its like they decided that an it was an outrageous reality show starring them.

Can't take even 5 minutes of it.

How about the opening ceremonies where they admitted the ceremonies were being technically enhanced for the viewing audience. That means that, during a live event, they decided to add special effects only visible to the viewers at home. Then, why am I watching a live event?

212 114 I've never been a fan. It never seemed rational. A bunch of people that can't affect you (or anything really) in the slightest and whom I cannot affect by merely *hoping* that they win. What's the point? "

As a baseball fan, I know what the point is - it's indulging your tribalistic instincts without bloodshed or any real ill feeling. People cheer for "their teams" because it's fun and because, unlike most movies, games are unpredictable. "Your guy" just might gain the lead in the last 3 seconds and win in a photo-finish; "your team" might just win the game in a walkoff; the Hail Mary pass might work. And you cheer if it happens and feel a little sad if it doesn't, but you know full well your life will go on the same no matter what.

There is also appreciation of the fact that top athletes are better at what they do than most of us are at anything - but it won't last. Like feminine physical beauty, athletic skill flowers and passes away with age. We cherish things that don't last.

But, as been noted, the left wants things both ways - they hate tribalism and American exceptionalism and have infected the sports world with SJWs who despise half the people in the country - but now they expect us to root and chant USA, USA! for people who have made it difficult to admire their achievements because they are advertising their spoiled sense of entitlement.

All a great athlete really has to do to be beloved is A. act grateful B. be patriotic and C. don't behave like a total asshat to others. A lot of them can't even manage that.

There's a sort of Cargo Cult/Iowahawk 4 steps in progressive takeover of institutions thing going on with the Olympics.

For years it *was* an event, where families would watch these event and feel inspired by the athletes' accomplishments and celebrate American wins, American success stories.

NBC (and the media) long ago chucked the *values* that made the Olympics an event and so inspiring, but they think the coverage itself makes it an event. No amount of cutely PR and social media tie-ins make it a "thing."

279 Saw a crazy Olympic event last night; seemed pretty good. Women's cross snowboard or something? They just shove like 8 girls out and they race down a course, simultaneously. Lots of crashing, sliding, etc. Think the bronze medal winner crossed the finish line on her back head first or something crazy like that.

They should have something similar but with the women hockey players, and fighting allowed as they skate down the ice track. That would be popular!

As for the popularity of ice skating, the women love the romance of being picked up by "burly strong men" (Sadly, all they get are gays) and I think figure skating is one of the few winter olympic sports where you can actually see the girls physiques because they aren't in a snowsuit. Too bad all the girls exercised off their boobs (I think there's a really good chance that the men's hockey squads have bigger boobs than the ice skater chicks).

286 44 I watched the snowboarding. NBC played the Olympics from 8PM until approximately 11:30 PM, then the local news. After the news, the repeated the same three and a half hours they already ran.

There's live stuff happening over on the NBC Sports channel on the DirecTV box, but A) it is largely stuff they're going to show later in their prime time feed and B) the guide lies; tune in all excited for curling and have to put up with people sliding down hills with boards strapped to their feet.

Last time, NBC had four channels going pretty much constantly: the network, USA network, CNBC, and MSNBC. The usually did curling all night on USA network. This time there's much less coverage available on the TV box and what little there is is repeated.

378 Soooo...here's my take. NBC has been killing the Olympics FOR YEARS! I watch sports to, you know, SEE ACTUAL SPORTING EVENTS.

But for decades now, NBC has been peddling these soft-focus Barbara Walters-type HUMAN INTEREST stories on the athletes, and it drives me up the fucking wall.

Everything now has to be this cheesy infotainment with heart-wrenching narratives, usually hosted by someone from one of the cheesy infotainment morning shows. Honestly, that shit takes up more than half the time, so you really don't see that much SPORTS! And with all of the tape-delay shit, they withhold the best events until the last 5 minutes of the broadcast. They just suck.

381 Love some sports but the NBC coverage is unwatchable without a DVR because it's so packed full of commercials.
But there are other problems. NBC correspondents are incredibly dumb when it comes to foreign policy and all the contradictions inherent in modern Korea.
So much of the commentary has been terribly banal and the opening ceremony was the worst.
Wife adores skating but she can't stand Johnny Weir-his flaming hair style and sucky insight.
Dick Button had more insight in his little finger.
Then they canned the one guy, who said something correct and knew what he was talking about.
Then we have the fact that the country is broken by leftist identity policies. Guess what ? Winter Olympics are packed full of good looking, athletic white and Asian people. Deal with it.
All their achievement is great and hard earned.
And the black skater who lost the coin toss, and cried. Coins are raaaacist.
Oh and tell the obnoxious Gay skater and skier that most people don't give a f*ck about their feelings and lies about Pence.
You put your sexuality above your country, you can lose for all I care.
The problem here is that there is a sizeable amount of viewers who will turn off this stuff.
NBC is reaping what they sowed.

Posted by: DaveM at February 16, 2018 02:48 PM (WWC3Y)

387 In the age of Ben Johnson Carl Lewis, I stopped watching the Olympics. My reason, I have no faith I am seeing actual performance as opposed to chemically enhanced performance. The records etc. are meaningless. {A Rod, Bonds, Clemens, McGwire etc. caused me to feel this way about baseball.} So for me the Olympics are a great waste of time and money.

Posted by: Locke Common at February 16, 2018 02:48 PM (jAVbZ)

388 The first Olympics I got into? Thirty years ago this month, the Calgary games. The one thing I learned to appreciate about the Olympics (yes, they have their many flaws) is that they give me the opportunity to see many sports that I would otherwise not see. (The biathlon? Good lord, HOW does someone ski to the point where their average heart rate is 170/min. and STOP and shoot a target the size of a DVD five times with a .22 rifle? For one example.)
I'm watching these games in part because when I was stationed at Osan, PyeongChang was bidding for the 2014 Games, and I remember seeing signage for their bid in the countryside in that part of Korea. And again, they let me see sports that I otherwise would not.
Yes, the vomit-inducing gushing over the North Koreans is a huge problem. But the last go around was arguably worse, with Bob Costas's gushing interview of America's God-King, and NBC's ceaseless whining over the lack of gay rights in Russia. (That Russia isn't a free country to begin with obviously did not register with NBC, but then, as we have seen, NBC does not like freedom.)
There ARE bright spots in these Games. I'll relate one. It is quite popular in this country to classify people in to groups, as individualism is not tolerated in the United States, and Americans love the idea of a fully Balkanized country. They even want to classify people based on age. This is why I keep hearing (to my EXTREME annoyance) the word "millennial". (That, and, well, it's totes SUPER COOL!!!) But people need to stop that crap. The NFL and many of us could learn from how Mikaela Shiffrin conducted herself on the podium at her gold medal ceremony the other night...especially the NFL. And she is one of these young people we are all supposed to dismiss as stupid "millennials". Besides, aren't ALL of our young people the doom of our civilization?

A more interesting point is this: how much of that ratings drop is courtesy of cord cutting and other means of accessing Olympic coverage? In 2014 when NBC paid mad money to the IOC to cover the Games until 2032, I groaned (but thank God Costas isn't there in these Games and hopefully any others) I had to ask myself...what will "broadcasting the Games" MEAN in 2032...or even 2022? How much more of a ratings drop will NBC see not just because of disinterest but a shift to seeing the Games by other means?

389 44 I watched the snowboarding. NBC played the Olympics from 8PM until approximately 11:30 PM, then the local news. After the news, the repeated the same three and a half hours they already ran. Please don't tell me those are the only contests going on at any one given time.

391 203 I heard Nathan Chen botched it in his short skate program last night, poor guy. Supposedly uncharacteristic of him to do so. 393 304 NBC (and the media) long ago chucked the *values* that made the Olympics
an event and so inspiring, but they think the coverage itself makes it
an event. No amount of cutely PR and social media tie-ins make it a
"thing."
=====

For me, it was when professional US players were allowed in basketball and hockey. Sorry, the Olympics is supposed to be about amateurs.
Posted by: mustbequantum at February 16, 2018 12:51 PM (MIKMs)

It hasn't been all amateur in a long time. Even the amateurs of the Miracle on Ice went up against a team of professional Soviet hockey players.

The way I see it, the pros in the Olympics don't bother me at all. Take basketball. The Soviets and other countries sent their pros to go up against our amateurs and in 1988 Team USA came home with a bronze. So USA Basketball decided the time had come to stop playing nice and the Dream Team was born.

I agree, it would be nice if the Olympics were only amateurs, but sadly that ship has sailed long ago. If it were to return to that point, I'd be fine...but with the proviso that EVERYONE at the Games must be amateurs. Including the Russians and other countries that find playing by the rules to be a challenge. When the rest of the world calls off their dogs, we can call off ours.

394 Turned on what were apparently the gaylimpics last night, at end of routine by the gay skater who is all about having everybody focus on his gayness. No way. I changed the channel.

"Okay, that leftist a-hole should be off now," I thought. Turned channel back and there is hot little Tara Lipinsky talking to ... the flaming gay parody of a flaming gay flamer from Fifth Element? What the heck??

Does NBC think this is an under-represented 0.0001% of the population that they need to promote under radical leftist corporate "diversity and inclusion" policies? Is it even possible to under-represent 0.0001% of the population?

Prime kiddie time too. "Mommy, why is that man dressed like a super weird looking woman? And why does he sound like a super weird sounding woman, super exaggerating every kind-of woman-sounding noise he can make until it's unlike any noise any real woman ever made, and sounding even stranger because he isn't a woman at all? Is that normal?"

"It's not normal YET sweetheart. NBC is trying to normalize it. They are trying to make you THINK it is normal, but its actually straight out of a science fiction movie where it was used to make the future look as weird and outlandish and alien as possible. Confused yet?"

Maoist leftists: "It's very lookist to have Tara Lipinsky on there. Look how pretty she is! It's disgusting. NBC needs to replace her with TriggledyPuff, or maybe a transgender Klingon."
