Short story: The tree is in danger of falling unexpectedly. It is currently only being held up by artificial support (cables, etc.), but those cables aren't enough to keep the thing from crashing to the ground and maybe killing someone or damaging the White House.Specialists at the United States National Arboretum were brought in by the White House to assess the Magnolia grandiflora, as it is specifically termed. Its odd, how bad the news has gotten. I mean its always been pretty bad -- notoriously they never got a story right -- but lately its like they're deliberately trying to be awful. Pointlessly so, as well.
I remember well January of this year with major news outlets like the New York Times declaring that since Trump is such a monster they were changing the rules of journalism and going to straight out anti-Trump work rather than just news coverage. It was a jaw-dropping admission. I mean they had been doing it already, but to come straight out and admit it in print was shocking. It was a direct admission that they didn't view their job as informing but as shaping and controlling. President Trump has been great at kicking them in the teeth for this. The internet has made it very, very difficult for them to get away with what they used to routinely. Remember this story: Ronald Reagan cuts free lunch budgets in schools, claiming Ketchup is a vegetable, remember that? It was just a BS rumor. Someone told a reporter that's what he said, and they ran with it. But in the 1980s there was no internet, there was no voice for anyone to gainsay their rumors and lies. So now its presumed fact. Its treated as historical proof of Reagan's stupidity and evil toward kids. Now they can't dot it so much any longer but they are trying it even more Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 26, 2017 07:41 PM (39g3+) Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at December 26, 2017 07:41 PM (yRfhn) 25

But that tree has historical significance!
About 200 years ago, in the year 1919, a family of newly freed slaves set up a camp on the White House lawn. There they planted a tomato tree so they could feed their family. President John Tyler, weary from the Spanish-American War and relieved at its recent end, took pity on the family, invited them indoors in order to share Swiss Miss, and allowed the tree to stand. Now the Trumps want to destroy the tree and all that it represents. They can chop down the tree, but they cannot erase the history it represents! Almost every single fake news story starts out with a rumor or a tip by someone that the news then just runs without checking or asking. Because it says what they want said, or implies something they find politically useful.
An editor in the 1980s even would have spiked these stories instantly as being unsubstantiated and not news. it is not news that "someone says somebody says something" That is hearsay, it is rumor. Not news. I would love to start up a Twitter account and do nothing with it except edit social media news posts like an old time editor would: strip out that opinion, strip out that leading word, strip out that passive voice, strip out that unsupported claim. But I don't have the time and energy and don't know the newspaper lingo to make it really effective. I'd love it if someone else would, though. Not partisan, not political, just straight business: this is poorly written. Doesn't matter who it affects, what the story is, or where the source is. Just savage them for incompetence, not bias. Whenever CNN reports about anything to do with Russia dossier remember they have known since last year that it was fake because they have contact with Fusion GPS. Why must we choose?
Well there's a lot of crappy writing and poor journalism that's positive toward President Trump and conservatism as well, and that should be savaged. My concern is the quality of journalism, its craftsmanship. The media has always had its bias, but at least in years past there were enough people that cared about the job of being a reporter that they would try to do it well. We need that, we need reporting, we need the news. Its critical that we are informed about events and policies and ideas and peoples. And we're not getting that now, except by tooth and claw. We shouldn't have to bludgeon the truth out of news sources, they should sell it to us. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 26, 2017 07:55 PM (39g3+) 81

Around 1970, it's believed one of the leaders broke off from the other two and was removed, and its cavity was exposed, leaving the entire tree susceptible to decay. As such, the cavity was filled in with cement, a procedure not advisable today, but which at the time was deemed the proper course of action. The concrete did irretrievable damage and in 1981, it was removed and replaced with a large pole and cable system, which remain today, holding up the remaining leaders. More from the story:
The official Jackson Magnolia has been in the background for numerous historic events, from state arrival ceremonies and Easter Egg Rolls, to thousands of photo ops, social and athletic activities, and countless Marine One departures and arrivals. Ironically, the tree stands directly behind where the press is currently penned during these occasions, now perilously close to the weakened giant. CNN isn't much better as they left the fact that they've been growing seedlings to take it's place for months now.
People who are not wordsmiths by nature or education have little idea how much a report can be twisted 180 just by using the correct wording/phrasing. The people need an education in propaganda. Of course they're getting it now but how many realize what's going on? Just like music can evoke various emotions, words can also bring certain emotions to the surface and color ones judgement. And the effects can be longer lasting than just for that one article. Posted by: jakee308 at December 26, 2017 08:03 PM (nzLi4) 117

But the important thing is to " be better ".
Some day I hope you'll come to understand that being better is actually... you know, better. That there is virtue and morality that matters more than victory, and that some paths, some tactics are not worth doing even if they seem effective. To take the road of doing anything that seems most useful and likely to succeed no matter what it entails is bad for everyone, particularly ourselves. This is where you claim white knighthood and high moral ground while we lose blah blah false dichotomy. There are things we can and must do that might be morally troubling in more peaceful times or times of health and stability. That much is obvious to all but the weakest intellect. But that gray area does not mean that we should engage in wholesale family slaughter, at any time. Of course, having quipped about that, I'll also note that given where she's from and what she's accomplished, comments about "having balls" probably apply just as much to her as to her husband.

@140 I think the media is really torn on Melania. She's literally an immigrant, she speaks a bunch of languages, she's gorgeous and classy, she's clearly a good person and yet, to praise her makes her husband look good by comparison so they are mostly just mum about her like she doesn't exist.
------------------------- I don't think it's that. There's a certain degree of contempt toward any woman who's an attractive foreigner, marries an American man, and lives in the States with him. Regardless of her actual status and accomplishments, she gets tarred to a certain degree with the "mail order bride" thing. I suspect the media holds her in contempt because of the two items I mentioned (as well as the fact that her husband is a Republican, of course), and as a result will refuse to allow anything that might cast her in a positive light. Krugman has a rant about The Horror That Is Trump.
He sounds like a teenage girl. They are incensed at Trump because he doesn't have their approved pedigree. That undermines their elite position, almost as if all their expertise is a sham and that real-world experience actually counts, not their sheepskin from the Right School, not their imported ties, not their tailored suits with the Right Name on the inside pocket. It's all about Class and Pedigree to these people, and Trump is just Unclean. There's no living with people like that, not when they seek control. The entire Ruling Class is going to have to be deposed and run out of town or they're just going to rebuild their monopoly when they (or term limits) finally get him out of the way.
