First We Made Fire! But It May Have Come With Some Downsides. The link is real. It's not a clever spoof. Although it is hard to believe that even the employees of the gray Lady are this stupid. But there were downsides, too. Occasionally, the smoke burned their eyes and seared their lungs. Their food was likely coated with char, which might have increased their risk for certain cancers. With everyone congregated in one place, diseases could have been transmitted more easily. Much research has focused on how fire gave an evolutionary advantage to early humans. Less examined are the negative byproducts that came with fire, and the ways in which humans may or may not have adapted to them. In other words, how did the harmful effects of fire shape our evolution?Where to start.... How about; The taming of fire began the process of creating civilization. There is nothing....NOTHING bad about its use. The smoke burned their eyes? So they moved away from the smoke, like any three-year-old knows. It seared their lungs? Really? How do you know? Ever go camping or hang around a bonfire? Oh...of course not. They don't do that stuff on the Upper West Side and at Brown. But normal people (and probably every animal on earth) know not to stand really close to the fire and breath in the hot smoke and air. It covered their food in char? Huzzah! Good for them. That's called flavor you dolts. Many of us are going to emulate our ancestors this very weekend and char some red meat! And here is the big one: It causes cancer. Fine. I'll take it. Every accomplishment of modern man can be traced to fire, directly or indirectly, so suggesting that it is a bad thing because of cancer is moronic in the extreme. Many of us wouldn't be alive long enough, or would never have been born to get cancer if we didn't have fire, so it's a silly point. The flaccid logic of pretty much everyone involved in this mass of sophomoric idiocy is embarrassing. There are so many logical flaws that it's difficult to imagine that the writers and editors weren't just standing around some office on a rainy Friday afternoon, getting high and tossing around ideas for the stupidest articles they could imagine. This one makes me deeply suspicious:With mathematical modeling, Rebecca Chisholm and Mark Tanaka, biologists at the University of New South Wales in Australia, simulated how ancient soil bacteria might have evolved to become infectious tuberculosis agents. Without fire, the probability was low. But when the researchers added fire to their model, the likelihood that tuberculosis would emerge jumped by several degrees of magnitude.Huh? So you modeled the rate of mutation, added some additional inputs like an easier pathway for communicability, and arrived at infectious tuberculosis. Okay. This is the same shitty thinking that gives us headlines like "GLOBAL WARMING CAUSES ZIKA!" The ulterior motive for this and other, similar articles is simple; the NYT and other leftist rags enjoy sticking their thumbs in the eye of Western civilization. In hindsight I shouldn't have included a link. The NY Times is a click-whoring organization....elegant, but they still prostitute themselves. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1
It is amazing how many 'news' articles are just exercises in stupidity for the writer. Blogs are bad because they are frivolous? I am not seeing much improvement here.

The owners of this also had half a dozen displays of more unusual animals, such as wallabies, giant tortoise, Emus, and Pacas from S. America. Add in a full trailer with a prairie dog colony, various monkeys and a couple of camels that people could ride, and it was an interesting display. They also had a "feed the goats" pen set up to feed them a cup of pellets you could buy. All animals had water available, feed, shade, and were arranged so you could look at them, but not touch or poke through their enclosure, etc. The obligatory hand sanitizer stands everywhere. Other than the Free the animals SJW, of which there wouldn't be many in this locale, I can't imagine anyone finding fault this set up, but who knows. My guess is that as humans with some kind of a functioning cerebellum we instinctively move into where the air is more acceptable to our lungs. And the ones who didn't, natural selection. Uh, dumb shit, cancer is primarily a disease of the elderly. Until recently it was relatively rare, because even as late as 1900, the mean longevity was 45. (Which of course is why the cancer incidence is increasing, now that living to your 80s is not that unusual.) Back in cave man era, you were probably lucky to live 30, if that. Cigarettes reached the point on the curve long ago where every increase now cuts down the amount of taxes they actually net. Now they are looking for something else to tax. Most liberal States want to run gasoline through the roof.
Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at August 07, 2016 03:10 PM (mpXpK) It gets worse. As usual, California leads the way (to perdition). They now have a "pilot" program to tax mileage (they say "instead of" but we all know it's really "in addition to" gasoline). More fuel efficient cars? Yay, taxing gasoline cut consumption! But ... that cuts the tax revenue from gasoline! We must tax something else, or how will we get the money we're going to waste? Posted by: Jay Guevara at August 07, 2016 03:28 PM (SRKgf) 273
I am always amazed by modern people's inability to realize that knowledge does not equal intelligence. Most likely these guys and gals who were using fire for the first time figured things out pretty quickly.
Smoke got in their eyes *roll music* Move to upwind. Meat charred? Char does not taste good, so they probably figured out techniques and methods that kept the food cooked, but not charred. Hell, this may be crazy, but I bet the best 'cook' (let's call him or her) was sought after by the village. I bet that they started asking him or her to cook their food in exchange for food for the 'cook'. This is what bugs me about so many post apocalyptic things. If people worked like these idiots seem to think, then society would never have gotten started in the first place. Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 07, 2016 03:29 PM (WV3Yp) 274

TB is caused by a bacteria that needs blood and oxygen, that's why it's usually in the lungs.
It can grow in other parts of the body. As for carcinogens, I don't think they cause cancer. They TRIGGER cancer. Once a cancer starts, you can take away the carcinogen but the cancer will continue to grow. Posted by: @votermom at August 07, 2016 03:37 PM (7lVbc) 284

She's gonna make corporations pay their fair share. Companies that leave she will impose an exit tax. Corporations don't pay taxes; they effectively just collect them for the government. I guess I view hanged as the "long drop" wherein the neck is broken by the drop so the hangee doesn't suffocate to death whereas I viewed hanging as a form of "short drop" wherein the hangee is deliberately left to suffocate. The entire hanging, hanged, past tense thing. Everybody of my generation, who had to take a shower after gym class, knew that some guys weren't hanged. They were hung.
There are two verbs "to hang." The past tense of the one that refers to suspension generally is "hung." The past tense of the other one, the one that refers to the method of execution, is "hanged." Posted by: Jay Guevara at August 07, 2016 04:14 PM (SRKgf) 365

Then there was the story written in the 1920's, in the New York Times, about how rocketry would not work in space because....there was nothing to push against.
This was actually lampooned by Robert Heinlein in one of his "juveniles", Rocket Ship Galileo. I think the article was actually retracted in 1969, just prior to the Apollo 11 moonflight. I think the original article in the Times was critical of early experimental rocketry research being reported about Robert Goddard. It's not just a case of preventing citizens from moving out of the country, it also applies to movement INSIDE the borders. Hence the commie fetish for internal passports and residence permits. The blue states have started making noises on that score as well. The recent 2008 CA proposal to implement an exit tax for CA residents who move out of state, for example. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at August 07, 2016 04:02 PM (LuZz Controlling internal movements is crucial to running a command economy. I always try to figure out how people think. I think it is useful in trying to predict what they are going to do next.
1) I wonder if the press is merely covering for her because she is the front runner. They do not think her various maladies (a fun word, wish I got to use it more) are that serious. And are just brazenly in the tank. They have convinced themselves that it is all physical. 2) They feel like they are the modern day versions of the journalists who hid how badly FDR was physically infirm. All political junkies do this (left and right.) FDR was their Godot, just as Reagan was ours. Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 07, 2016 04:35 PM (WV3Yp) 398

Posted by: JoeF. at August 07, 2016 04:25 PM (RYe1X) I kind of thought the same thing. Is it a photoshop? But then why is the press not allowed to photograph her getting on/off airplane? The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that liberals are quite disappointed the human race didn't wipe itself out in a nuclear holocaust, and is now punishing us for not nuking the planet.
Perhaps we can come to a compromise- put all Libs in the Sahara (or somewhere else remote) and we'll just nuke them. They get their holocaust and we get our peace and quiet. Posted by: Joe W at August 07, 2016 06:26 PM (BESV4) 442

The underlying concept is that we don't need fire, anymore, so now we're free to make an analysis. This sums up the elites in a nutshell. They can't conceive of a use for one of the basic forces of the universe, because they don't, themselves, use it. If that's the case then it can't, obviously, be all that important anymore, right? Our elites have relegated fire to the dustbin of history with borders, the sexes, and morality.

250 The downside of fire. Fire allowed us to cook our food. That allowed the breakdown process of the food to begin outside the body, thus digestion of food for people became less energy intensive and we could benefit from that and it allowed our brains to further develop. Thus allowing stupid people to think that they are smart and publish idiotic articles in the NYT.
